Bellingham, Wshington
Tumblr media
July 25: So long Bellingham. We didn't see much, but we found a good BBQ restaurant and, most importantly, the peeps at the hotel and FBO were awesome. Gas is a little higher here at $7.20/gal but that'll look cheap compared to the prices farther north.
The first order of business after getting checked into the hotel last night was to find dinner. Shoutout to Big Stick BBQ; I'm a little too far west to find my favorite Eastern NC BBQ, but the brisket was pretty damn good. We spent a couple of hours catching up, comparing notes, and making plans, then went back to the hotel and promptly crashed.
The temperature this morning was a cool 54°. Goodbye sweating, hello down jackets. We had breakfast at the hotel (a big thank you to Danis for taking care of us early) before Jose hauled us to the Fred Meyer and to the airport. Even with shuffling 5 planes up to the pump to fuel up, we were wheels up by a few minutes after 8.
The plan was to go from Bellingham to Ketchikan to refuel before ending up in Juneau, or an alternate location if everything aligned. We skirted Vancouver and followed the Strait of Georgia north until we turned direct to Ketchikan. I've been on, and in, Puget Sound. As stunning as it is from the surface, it's insanely beautiful from the air. With the view of the vast Pacific off to port, especially breathtaking at the 140 mile-wide opening to Queen Charlotte Sound, it was easy to imagine the #NextChapter when we'll be sailing north instead of flying. (or motoring as the Inside Passage makes for terrible sailing)
Although we don't have any real use for them now, I've been teasing the Boy Scout about getting floats. All I could think about as we flew over the island-dotted waters was how sick it would be to look down, pick a spot, and land on the water. Maybe do a few dives off the floats before having lunch and flying off to find the next interesting spot. After today I don't think he needs more convincing.
Tumblr media
The Ketchikan International Airport is located on an island across from the town of Ketchikan, which appears to exist solely to cater to the cruise industry. Like many other towns in Alaska, Ketchikan is not connected to the rest of the world by any kind of road; it's accessible only by water or air. We topped off the tanks (11.29/gal) and continued toward Juneau.
About halfway to Juneau we passed over the community of Wrangell which lies opposite the Stikine River Delta and several glaciers formed from the Stikine Icefield. There are several National Park and State Recreation cabins available but we couldn't see any way to access them short of a boat or a float plane (hey cowboy). Flying over them confirmed they were a no go. What we did find was a multitude of gravel bars which was the perfect excuse to put the new tundra tires to work. For the most part the ground was sandy/gravel and pretty smooth but the big tires made the landings like buttah. After finding a wide gravel bar where we could park and tie down all five planes well off the water, we set up camp in the tree line overlooking the river. A few tried their hand at fishing (no luck) while the rest of us gathered firewood, did a little exploring, and chilled. A little river-bar happy hour soon commenced around the fire while we thought about what freeze dried delicacy would be on the dinner menu.
I should add here that I'm not a boy scout. I grew up sailing, not camping. Tonight's events were the most boy scout shit ever, and it was awesome. More flight-seeing, including glacier flyovers, tomorrow before we head to Juneau for a couple of days. Assuming the local bear population doesn't get rowdy in the middle of the night.

Note that I do not own the characters from the Greek Myth, I was doing this for fun.
My Charon: Note this is an old art of her that I drawn her, when I was 15
Charon is a is the ferryman who transports the dead across the river Acheron to the underworld, he is the son of Erebus and Nyx and brother of Thanatos and Hypnos, of Moros, Keres, Momus, Oizys, Hesperides, Moirai, Nemesis, Apate, Philotes, Geras, Eris, Styx, Dolos, Ponos, Euphrosyne, Epiphron, Continentia, Petulantia, Misericordia and Pertinacia.
Likes: his boat, his job, his family, coins/obolos and alone time.
Dislikes: drama, fake coins/obolos and people keep taking his boat.
Friends/Allies: Thanatos, Hypnos, Hermes, his siblings and Hades.
Enemies: pretty much nobody, except for Theseus who can’t even give him coins/obolos, because he is too cheap or he keeps complaining wants a super fancy cruise ship to go to the underworld.
Personality: he can be quiet sometimes, but he can be cheerful and up beat when you get to know, but don’t take his boat, because he can kill you if you did.

Day Forty-four
The midges were trying to make themselves known last night as the wind died down, but with the tent all setup for a beautiful view I was safe and sound and allowed myself a bit of a lie in after all the work yesterday, and knowing the elevation profile for today!
Up and off, it's a twisty up-and-down road past Loch Shieldag and around the rest of Loch Shieldag before emerging from the trees on to the small bay at Ardheslaig.
It's a stiff climb up from here around the side of some sheer cliffs, with an amazing view over Loch Torridon.
Around the corner of the cliffs, we start on a looping, rolling road along the rest of the north side of the peninsula. I'd been anticipating a lot of hard work here, but the road gifts some lovely cruises downhill and the turns aren't so sharp that the momentum is allowed to be used to charge up the next climbs, making progress quite enjoyable through the moorlands with Lewis and Harris in the distance.
Passing Fearnmore, it's a swing south to be greeted with a lovely view of the islands of Rona and Raasey over the water, with Skye rising up behind them.
Following on the road southward, the end of Raasey is invisible behind a torrential downpour that is heavy enough to be opaque. The wind though, after days of tough headwinds, jas finally turned to a favourable tailwind, and I catch onky a very fine drizzle as I pass it by around Applecross Sands.
Rounding the south corner is a great view across to the rest of the coast and the bay with the river Applecross flowing out from the mountainsides, which is cruised over as we roll into Applecross village, where I get to see a stag grazing by the road not giving a single care about passersby!
Having a good sit whilst cooking dinner yesterday at Shieldag helped provide me with a bit of centering. For much of this adventure, I'd taken a lot of enjoyment in ploughing through the miles, but the constant hills here put a hard limit on that, and I think I had allowed it to subconsciously intrude on the enjoyment of the journey. Which is foolish, and required a slight shift in perspective.
So, given the amount of climbing over the last few days, and with a mighty ascent coming up after Applecross, I've had a good early finish to the day and booked into a cheap campsite here for a couple of nights for a bit of R&R, which the muscles will surely appreciate! And it's with much love to the irreplaceable @annatrekkie for a generous tip for this stay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to say, Applecross Campsite is outstanding considering how affordable it is. After pitching up I've had a lovely steaming hot shower in onenof the best toilet & shower blocks I've encountered in years of camping - they even have grey water reclamation!
It's also the first time in quite a while that I've been able to have a good look at myself in a big mirror, and damn. Six weeks of cycling has certainly had its effects - whilst my hands have been callousing up, I've definitely been getting leaner and even have the top of a six pack starting to emerge. And the legs have never looked better.
I'm currently treating myself to a nice sit by the waterside enjoying a pint of the excellent local ale, and may even go for a good fish & chips before retiring and having a very chill and relaxing day tomorrow.
Back on Sunday!

Gardens outside Paris make spectacular impression on tourists as flowers turn heads and calm souls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Claude Monet’s Gardens are both intimately familiar and overwhelming in their spectacle. The French impressionist master lived in Giverny, France, for half his life, from 1883 to his death, at age 86, in 1926. The gardens inspired Monet’s greatest and best-known paintings. They are a popular tourist attraction today, located near a tranquil bend of the Siene River. It’s an easy one-hour drive northwest of Paris. (See the video at the top of this article.)THIS POPULAR FLOWER IS IN SENSATIONAL FORM IN NEW ENGLAND THIS SUMMERGiverny is frequented by various tour groups from the city and is a common stop for Seine River cruise ships. The spectacular gardens of Giverny proved a great source of inspiration for the artist. Monet’s arrival at Giverny coincided with a rise in his financial and artistic fortunes.”Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny are like his paintings — brightly colored patches that are messy but balanced,” reports RickSteves.com.”Flowers were his brushstrokes, a bit untamed and slapdash, but part of a carefully composed design. Monet spent his last (and most creative) years cultivating his garden and his art at Giverny, the Camp David of Impressionism.”SINGLE MOM TRAVELS TO 17 COUNTRIES WITH BABY DURING 3-YEAR- PAID MATERNITY LEAVEThe gardens wow visitors with splashes of color from April to October. The landscape is highlighted by the bridges and water lilies seen in hundreds of Monet’s paintings known throughout the world. Here are some of the early summer flowery highlights of Monet’s Gardens at Giverny. The plant gets its name from blooms that look similar to the claws or beaks of a lark bird.”As larkspur typically blooms in the warm summer months, this flower often represents lightness, pure fun and the desire to be humorous,” reports the website of Nanz & Kraft Florists of Louisville, Kentucky.”The larkspur is a symbol of an open heart, sincerity, strong love bonds and dedication.”This stunning and distinctive flower, a showstopper in any garden, has long been central to decorative gardening. STATE FLOWER QUIZ! CAN YOU MATCH THESE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS WITH THEIR CORRECT STATES?”The plant has been a part of European and English gardens since the 1500s and a part of American gardens since the 1700s,” reports the website of Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.”Most common blossoms are usually rich, deep purple, but can also be white, red or pink.”Feverfew, a type of small daisy, has long played a role in folk medicine, first in Europe and later after it was imported to North America and other parts of the world. “Two common reasons people take feverfew are to try to prevent migraine or lessen arthritis symptoms,” reports WebMD.One of the most beautiful blooms at Giverny, or in any garden, is known by a variety of names: painted tongue, tube tongue and velvet trumpet flower among them.ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, JULY 9, 1828, AMERICAN PAINTER GILBERT STUART DIES AT AGE 72Whatever this flower is called, it offers “a kaleidoscope of color and glossy, spectacular details,” reports NorthAmericanFarmer.com. “This plant produces flowers that possess flamboyant pigment shadings and vivid veins.”These distinctive thistle-like flowers boast a significant history in human evolution far behind their eye-catching beauty.”Safflower is one of the oldest known cultivated crops,” according to the website of Kew Royal Botanic Gardens of London. “It has been a highly valuable resource for thousands of years; first as a clothing and food dye, then as a cheap alternative to saffron, and now a cooking oil and vital ingredient in skin and hair care products.”An import from North America, this spectacularly vivid flower briefly blazes across Monet’s studio early summer and is a rare find even in its native habitat. For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyle”The flowers open only in the morning,” reports wildflower.org. “The petals then wilt and turn to a jelly-like fluid. Spiderwort flowers close by midday and last only one day.”Often called by their botanical name “nymphaea” in Monet’s paintings, water lilies are easily the most instantly recognizable flower at Giverny. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERThey form the centerpiece of a series of 250 Monet paintings, many of them among the world’s most well-known pieces of art.”Monet grew white water lilies in the water garden he had installed in his property at Giverny in 1893,” reports the website of Musee d’Orsay in Paris. “From the 1910s until he died in 1926, the garden and its pond in particular, became the artist’s sole source of inspiration.”Monet himself said, “I have come back to things that are impossible to do: water with weeds waving in the depths. Apart from painting and gardening, I am good for nothing. My greatest masterpiece is my garden.”

Monday, August 5 - Kuri Bay
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a fairly relaxing day today - there was only one excursion, and it was fairly short, and there weren't as many lectures and activities as usual (although there was Trivia). Our trip ashore was around 11, so we spent some time sitting on our balcony before and catching up on emails, news, etc.
Kuri Bay has been the site of pearl farming for around 100 years, starting with Japanese who mainly harvested the oysters for the mother-of-pearl which was used in everything from jewelry, decoration, and especially buttons. After the advent of plastic buttons the industry languished for a while, but then was reborn as a cultured pearl farm. The oysters are "seeded" with a bit of material, and then put on racks here in Kuri Bay, where they are allowed to grow for two years, being regularly cleaned (for barnacles, etc.) After two years, the oysters are harvested and the pearl is removed. If it is considered to be a saleable pearl, the oyster gets seeded a second time for another two years - if not, the meat is harvested and sold and the shell is saved for the nacre, or mother-of-pearl.
We took a tour of the facility here, with the lodging and recreational areas - the actual real sorting, grading, etc. is back in corporate HQ in Darwin. It's a two week on, one week off schedule, and everyone gets around by Mallard seaplane. While we were there, our ship offered seaplane rides, which were fairly expensive for about 10 minutes in the air.
Near the end of our tour we got to a lovely overlook point, and could see the bay and the entire operation below. We descended to a covered area with fans (it was quite hot in the sun, and although this is the "dry"season, it was still plenty humid). Here our guide opened an oyster to see what we could find, opening it completely (something they don't do if they are going to reseed the oyster). Inside was a fairly nice pearl, on the smallish size, but round and with a nice luster. We were the sixth group, and in the little dish are the pearls from the first five pearls as well. "Ours" was the lower one on the right in the picture. One of the interesting things is that there is always a little pea crab inside the oyster - it seems to be a symbiotic relationship, and every healthy oyster has one. I wasn't sure what future it has when its oyster is harvested.
After the unveiling of the pearl, we passed their small sales area - these are not cheap pearls, and the least expensive was several thousand dollars. According to some folks who went to the stores in Broome, these are among the most expensive and are probably pricier here than in their showroom in Broome. They also had samples of the oyster meat - it was a bit like scallops (no surprise there), as well as some with a little teriyaki type sauce, which was delicious along with a glass of Australian bubbly (it was after noon, after all!).
The water here is much clearer than some of the other places we have been along the coast, and as we walked back on the pier to the Zodiacs, we saw a smallish shark in the water. According to the locals it was probably a tawny nurse shark. I did forget to mention that I saw my first Aussie crocodile yesterday while we were in Talbot Bay, swimming towards our ship. It looked like a log with the naked eye, but when I got the binoculars on it, it was a pretty good sized specimen. By the time I raised the camera, though, it had sunk below the surface. We should get some chances to see more crocs when we get to Hunter River tomorrow.
Our team finally won in trivia, and now have a reputation to uphold - we were lucky to know several answers that no other team got, and that gave us double points for those answers. Mostly, though, it is just luck when the questions align with our somewhat arcane knowledge. But there are a lot of laughs, and our cruise director, Lupi, makes it really fun.
Tomorrow we move up the coast to another area with lots of exposed ancient sandstone and mangrove forests, and it should be good for wildlife viewing. We will have two Zodiac excursions to slightly different habitats, so it should be interesting. Sailing away from Kuri Bay this afternoon we could see all the markers for the oyster racks - tomorrow it should be a good deal wilder.
