ADELAIDE 2024
I have just returned from a trip to Adelaide. You may have noticed my recent name change to "Seeing The Island And Beyond". I explained here on my Instagram that while I intended this blog to only be about my travels outside of Australia, I have since decided to include trips I make around Australia on the blog as I do not travel overseas enough to have continuous content.
Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia, I went in May which is Winter here in Australia. Adelaide and all of South Australia gets freezing cold winters.
DAY ONE Date: 20/5/2024 Weather: Day: 18 Degrees Night: 12 Degrees Itinerary: Arrive In Adelaide Check Into Hotel - Adina Apartments Luigi's Delicatessan Rundle Mall Alba Hotel
The trip start at Sydney Domestic Airport on the 20th of May, my Mother and I flew from Sydney to Adelaide via Jetstar. The flight to Adelaide was 2 hours.
The last two trips I took were Singapore and Uluru, both very hot places. When I stepped off the plane in both Singapore and Uluru, I was immediately greeted with the extreme heat. This time however was very different, instead of intense heat, when I stepped off the plane I noticed a biting cold as May is Winter in Australia and South Australia gets freezing in Winter. After getting our luggage, we got a cab to the hotel we were staying at Adina Apartments, a beautiful hotel situated in an old treasury building.
When we arrived at the hotel, we were checked in by a wonderful lady named Natalie, Natalie actually took the time to give Mum and I a print out of a map of Adelaide and explain to us exactly where all of the main attractions were located and directions on how to get to them. She also gave us a list of all of the best places to eat in Adelaide. We were both very impressed with the wonderful service Natalie provided us.
After check in, Mum and I went to one of the restaurants on Natalie's list Luigi's Delicatessan. We were greeted by a lovely waitress who explained the menu to us (there is no menu at Luigi's, instead the wait staff explain the menu to you, something they call a "talking menu") We ordered two pasta dishes, orichette with pesto, peas and brocollini and gnocchi with napoletana. The two pasta dishes were out of this world delicious!!!! they came out on a beautiful big board with a basket of house made bread, Mum and I wanted to lick the bowl it was so good AND the portion sizes were so big we had enough to take home to the apartment with us.
Lunch At Luigi's Delicatessan
Tumblr media
After lunch, Mum and I went for a stroll through Rundle Mall, I want to mention that Adelaide is a very easy city to get around because unlike Sydney where I'm from, the city of Adelaide was planned in advance and built in a square so all of the major attractions and restaurants are within walking distance of each other. Rundle Mall is like most major shopping centres in Australia with one huge exception, it is all outdoors and has lots of little narrow laneways to explore.
We walked back to the hotel and I had a swim in the pool, I know what you are thinking "are you crazy? you went swimming in 18 degree weather in Adelaide in Winter?" while indeed I am crazy, the pool is an indoor pool which is heated and there is also a spa within the pool complex so I was nice and warm.
That night, we had a bit of difficulty finding somewhere to eat as most restaurants in Adelaide are closed on Monday nights so that is something to keep in mind when travelling to Adelaide. Eventually we found a nice restaurant in the Alba Hotel, a very beautiful new hotel that we were actually looking at staying at originally, however we chose Adina due to its central location, the Alba Hotel is about a 5 minute cab drive out of the city, it also has an outdoor pool which would be beautiful in summer but too cold in winter. The food we had was very nice, unfortunately I forgot to take photos of the food but believe me when I say it was delicious.
COSTS Lunch: $91.00 Taxi To Alba Hotel: $11.00 Dinner: $89.00 Taxi To Adina Apartments: $11.00
DAY TWO Date: 21/5/2024 Weather: Day: 19 Degrees Night: 12 Degrees Itinerary: Adelaide Zoo Sushi Train Koko Black Madame Hanoi
Day two was dedicated to the amazing Adelaide Zoo. Adelaide zoo is Australia's second oldest zoo, opening in 1883 and is home to 2500 animals. Adelaide zoo is most famous for its Giant Panda's Wang Wang and Fu Ni, the only Giant Panda's found anywhere in Australia. Everyday at 1:15PM is the Giant Panda keeper talk where you can learn more about these adorable animals, I learnt many interesting facts, however I won't spoil it by sharing them here. Other interesting creatures in Adelaide Zoo include Sumatran Tigers, Lions, Taipurs, Manned Wolves, Komodo Dragons and much more. The Reptile Enclosure is also pretty awesome and was my second favourite exhibit after the Giant Pandas.
Adelaide Zoo
Tumblr media
After our trip to the Adelaide Zoo, we got on one of the Free City Connector Buses that takes you all around the city and got off at Rundle Mall where we had sushi at Sushi Train for lunch. After lunch, we stumbled across a Koko Black cafe and went in for dessert. I had a warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream which was delicious.

Tumblr media
We went back to the hotel and I went and had my daily afternoon spa and swim. For dinner that night, we went to Madame Hanoi, an amazing Vietnamese restaurant just outside the SkyCity Casino. My Mum had a bao bun for an entree and I had spicy tofu which was delicious. For mains we shared Galangal Spiced Half Chicken with rice. The chicken was so tender and succulent and covered in a delicious miso corn puree with pickles, coriander and dried chilli oil. It was the best chicken dish either of us has ever eaten, the portion sizes were big meaning we had leftovers (I may or may not have had the chicken and tofu for breakfast the next morning).
Madame Hanoi
Tumblr media
COSTS Taxi To Adelaide Zoo: $12.00 Adelaide Zoo: $42.50 Bus To Sushi Train: $2.05 Lunch: $22.00 Koko Black: $8.00 Taxi To Madame Hanoi: $10.00 Dinner: $66.00 Taxi To Adina Apartments: $10.00
DAY THREE Date: 22/5/2024 Weather: Day: 18 Degrees Night: 12 Degrees Itinerary: Art Gallery Of South Australia Lunch Adelaide Botanic Gardens Pizza E Mozzarella Bar
Day three was very exciting for me because that day I was meeting up with Maura, an internet friend of 10 years!!!!! it was so exciting to finally meet up in person. We met up at the Art Gallery Of South Australia, greeting each other with a huge hug and excited grins. Being from Sydney, I didn't think there would be galleries better than ours in other states but I was wrong! the Art Gallery Of South Australia would have to be better than any of the galleries that I have seen in Sydney. The gallery is completely free to enter, unless of course you are there for a paid exhibition and houses many amazing treasures.
We spent well over an hour walking through the art gallery and looking at all of the beautiful works of art. I was pleasantly surprised to find a digital portrait of Lady Gaga in the museum.
Art Gallery Of South Australia
Tumblr media
After seeing the Art Gallery Of South Australia, Maura and I went next door to the South Australian Museum. This museum focuses on native cultures, fauna of Australia, prehistoric creatures, minerals, arctic explorations and much more. There is so much to see here, you could easily spend over an hour exploring everything which we did, and we thoroughly enjoyed everything that we saw.

Tumblr media
We then went and had lunch at this really nice Ramen bar, unfortunately I cannot remember the name of it and I forgot to take photos, but it was delicious.
Our last stop was the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, a wonderland of all different kinds of plants and flowers. We pretty much walked the entire gardens which was tiring but so worth it. There was a little straw hut which Maura and I both agreed reminded us of "The Secret Garden", a green house with lillypads, a rose garden, a greenhouse with a cave and much more.

Tumblr media
At around 4:00PM, Maura and I said our goodbyes and I went back to the hotel. I had my daily afternoon swim and spa and then Mum and I went to Pizza E Mozzarella Bar for dinner. I had a really nice mocktail which I can't remember the name of, for dinner, Mum and I shared a garlic pizza and a spaghetti in red sauce. Both meals were delicious and we defiantly would recommend them.

DAY FOUR Date: 23/5/2024 Weather: Day: 17 Degrees Night: 11 Degrees Itinerary: Bums On Seats Hanhdorf & Barossa Valley With Winery Lunch Tour - Maggie Beer's Farmshop - Barossa Valley Chocolate Company - Chateau Yaldara - Kies Family Wines - Hanhdorf Concubine
My Mum's birthday is in August so I booked a day trip to the Barossa Valley as an early birthday present for her. We went with a company Called "Bums On Seats", I know, funny name we all had a giggle about it. We were picked up out the front of our hotel in a van by a lovely driver by the name of Jeff. We were the first people Jeff picked up and then we went to 2 other hotels and picked up the other guests, there ended up being six of us so it was a very small and intimate group which was very nice. Everyone we met on our tour was really lovely and we were all quite good friends by the end of the day.
Our first stop was Maggie Beer's Farmshop at Pheasant Farm, this was the main reason I booked this tour for my Mum's birthday because my Mum loves Maggie Beer and has always wanted to visit her farm shop. It took us about an hour from Adelaide to get there, our guide Jeff was amazing and told us many interesting facts about Adelaide, the Barossa Valley and the Farmshop on the way.
Mum of course was very excited when we pulled into Maggie Beer's Farmshop and I got a polaroid shot of her before we went inside. The Farmshop is both a cafe and a gift shop in one, Maggie Beer for years had a show called "The Cook & The Chef" and inside the gift shop is the exact kitchen that she used for the show which Mum was very excited to see. After a look in the gift shop, we ordered morning tea at the cafe and sat and looked at the window at the magnificent Yabby Farm. Our morning tea arrived, Mum ordered a scone and a coffee and I had a dark chocolate brownie with pear, sounds like a weird combination but it was the most amazing brownie I have ever eaten!!!! Mum said her coffee and scone were out of this world. After about half an hour in the farm shop, we went back out to the van and hopped on to our next destination the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company.
Maggie Beer's Farmshop
Tumblr media
We arrived at the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company and were immediately greeted with the big chocolate fountain at the front of the shop. We were probably there for about 15 minutes, I bought lots of chocolate and even had a chocolate gelato at the gelato stall out the front of the shop.

We headed to our next destination, Chateau Yuldara for wine tasting. The beautiful big castle was built in 1941 by Hermann Thumm, a European immigrant who was sent to Australia due to WW2 and was placed in a working camp on the Murray River. After the war, Thumm was released and found work in winery near Lyndoch. Driving past an old flour mill with his boss one day, Hermann's imagination and passion were sparked, he made many visits to the current land owners and convinced them to sell him a portion of the land. For months, Hermann worked tirelessly to prepare the estate for its first vintage. Wine making began in 1947, Hermann relied on local grape growers for his first vintages.
Hermann had the infamous Chateau built over a period of 18 months, it was originally built to display his collection of furniture and fine china, however today it is used for wine tasting.
I myself am not a drinker (I know weird to be on a Barossa Valley tour when you don't drink), so while everyone was tasting wine, I walked around the magnificent gardens and even met some sheep.
Chateau Yuldara
Tumblr media
We headed to Kies Family Wines for lunch and more wine tasting. On the way there, we were given a lunch menu and asked to pick a lunch, I chose a spinach and ricotta filo with fries and mum chose something called the monkey nut chicken. All of our food was really nice and we got to sit and chat and get to know one another a lot better which was really nice. The winery also had a gift shop, thats where I pretty much spent most of my time while the others were tasting wine. I also went into the garden and noticed that they had American Bag Toss so I had a go at that as well.
Lunch At Kies Family Winery
Tumblr media
After lunch, we headed to the place I had been most eager to see, Hahndorf. Hahndorf is a cute little German village that was settled by German immigrants in the 19th century, as a result, the town looks and feels exactly like a town in Germany with its original German style architecture and artisanal food. Just walking up and down the streets, I saw many German flags and restaurants with German music playing inside, I even heard some people speaking German (I don't speak a word of German so I could have been mistaken but it defiantly sounded like German). The town itself has a very interesting history.
The history of Hahndorf begins in 1838, George Fife Angas, a director of a South Australian company, made a trip to London to promote colonisation. George met Pastor Kavel during his trip, who was trying to help German Lutherans being persecuted by the King Of Prussia to immigrate to safer places. Angas, moved by the plight of the Lutherans convinced Kavel that South Australia would be a suitable place for the Lutherans to emigrate to and provided a generous donation of 8000 pounds. 187 German Lutheran immigrants arrived in Port Adelaide on the 28th of December 1838 via the 344 tonne ship Zebra. Unfortunately, the passengers were unable to disembark until the 2nd of January 1839 as a result of low tide. Dirk Hahn the ships captain, had grown to respect the passengers and promised to help them achieve their goal of settling and farming together, he managed to negotiate a parcel of land in the Adelaide Hills.
The negotiated contract provided the 38 families with 100 acres of land, rent free for the first year. Of this 19 acres were allocated for housing and roads and the rest for cultivation, the settlers were also provided with a years worth of seeds and some livestock, all on credit as a communal debt. The settlers decided to buy the land at the end of the first year, however it took them a few years to pay off the debt. In addition to the 38 families, an extra 14 families who had settled previously at Klemzig joined the settlement. The new settlement was named Hahndorf (Hahn's Village) in honour of Captain Hahn who had helped the refugees to achieve their goal.
I absolutely loved this little town so much, all of the little shops are so cute, and I even bought a really cute bag in the Hahndorf Bag Shop. I have always wanted to visit Germany, but I want to do so even more so after seeing this village, I'd also like to start learning some German as I literally know none.

After Hahndorf, our wonderful tour had come to an end and we were dropped back at our hotel, where we said our goodbyes to all of the lovely people on the tour and our amazing driver Jeff. I of course went and had my afternoon swim and spa and then we went out for dinner.
We walked down to Chinatown that night and went to a really beautiful Chinese restaurant called Concubine, the food was amazing and so was the service. We got a little lost on our way there, so we rang them to ask for help getting there and one of the staff members literally walked down the street to find us!!!!! I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. I of course had Tofu and rice for dinner.

DAY FIVE Date: 24/5/2024 Weather: Day: 17 Degrees Night: 12 Degrees Itinerary: Glenelg Beach Cheeseburger Adelaide Central Markets Osteria Oggi Koko Black Rundle Mall
Day five was our last full day in Adelaide, so we decided to go down to Glenelg beach via tram. Glenelg Beach is a beautiful beach that is very popular in the summertime, the area of Glenelg, is also pretty amazing, there are many shops, cafes and restaurants. Lots of little photo ops along the beach front, a fountain in the centre square and a huge amusement centre for kids and big kids. As Mum and I went in winter, Glenelg was pretty quite and obviously we were unable to actually swim, however it was still very worth the trip here.
The first thing we did was go out on to the wharf. As we came back from the wharf, I discovered the little photo ops on the beach and got some photos with them. We then went to a little cafe called Banjo's for morning tea, mum had coffee and I had a mini Hawaiian pizza. We then walked up and down the main street and had a look in all of the little shops before getting the tram back to the Adelaide CBD.

Tumblr media
After Glenelg, we were both craving cheeseburgers so while we were on the tram back to Adelaide CBD, I looked up good burger bars in Adelaide and found one simply called "Cheeseburger". Once we got back to Adelaide CBD, we both walked to Cheeseburger and had a delicious cheeseburger for lunch.

After lunch we walked to the Adelaide Central Markets. The Adelaide Central Markets has over 80 vendors, selling fresh produce and amazing food. The fruit and veggies looked so beautiful and fresh!!!! I really wished I could have taken some back to Sydney with me. We walked up and down every aisle, I had a snickers pop at Jamu which was delicious and we both decided to return for lunch the next day.

Tumblr media
That night for dinner we went to Osteria Oggi, a beautiful Italian restaurant. The restaurant is unique in that rather than sitting at an individual table, you sit at a more communal table, the idea of this is to encourage guests to mingle with and get to know one another which I think is quite a lovely idea. They do also have private booths but these are reserved for groups. We had a really lovely server whose name now slips my mind, however I DO!!!! remember she had an Industrial piercing which I was very jealous of. Mum and I shared Spaghetti with smoked passata, capers, olives, chilli and basil and wood grilled zucchini, both dishes were absolutely delicious and had us wanting to lick the plate.
Osteria Oggi
Tumblr media
After dinner we decided to go to Koko Black for dessert. We both ordered the same thing that we did on the Tuesday and we both enjoyed it just as much. In Adelaide, Friday is late night shopping night and since we were already in Rundle Mall, we decided to walk through and have a quick look before returning to our hotel.

COSTS Tram To Glenelg Beach: $3.00 Morning Tea: $8.00 Tram To Adelaide: $3.00 Lunch: $10.90 Dinner: $60 Koko Black: $8.00
DAY SIX Date: 25/5/2024 Weather: Day: 16 Degrees Night: 12 Degrees Itinerary: Check Out Of Hotel Torrens River Cruise Adelaide Central Market Church
COSTS Taxi To Torrens River: $9.00 Torrens River Cruise: $17.00 Lunch: $16.00
Waking up I was hit with a pang of sadness as I realised that this was the last morning I would wake up in the Adina Apartments. Luckily, our flight back to Sydney wasn't until 3 in the afternoon so we still had almost a full day to spend in Adelaide before heading to the airport.
We checked out of the Adina Apartments, however as we were still going to be out and about in Adelaide, they held our bags in storage for us.
We got a taxi down to the Torrens River. The Torrens River is the reason that Adelaide was selected as the site for settlement in 1836 when the Europeans arrived due to the fresh water available from the river. We went on a cruise down the river with Popeye River Cruises that took us through the entire river. Along the way we were handed around photos of the river throughout the ages and given many interesting facts by our guide, the cruise went for 45 minutes and was a very pleasant way to spend the morning.
The Torrens River
Tumblr media
After our cruise, we walked to the Adelaide Central Markets and had lunch at an amazing pizza stall called Atlas.
Lunch At Adelaide Central Markets
Tumblr media
After lunch, we walked across the road to the beautiful St Peter's Cathedral. Adelaide is known as the "City Of Churches" and has many beautiful churches to explore. Sadly I only got a chance to see one, however I'm hoping to visit again and when I do, I'll defiantly check out the others. St Peter's is a beautiful church and defiantly something I recommend seeing.
St Peter's Cathedral
Tumblr media
This is where our trip in Adelaide basically finished, we went back to the Adina Apartments and got our luggage and then got a taxi to the airport where we flew back home to Sydney.
I must say I really enjoyed Adelaide far more than I was expecting, Adelaide is a small but beautiful and diverse city with beautiful food, unique sights and friendly people from all walks of life.
TIPS - Adelaide gets very cold in Winter so make sure to pack plenty of warm clothes, boots and a coat if you visit in winter. - When using public transport, tap your card on the scanner when you get on but don't tap off again as you leave.

“Picture it, okay? Mardi Gras. New Orleans. Bourbon Street. I’m on college break with my three best childhood friends. Zak is there with his parents. He’s got his mom and dad with him. So it’s two different vibes, but somehow we all end up on the balcony of the same bar. Everyone’s got beads in their hands. We’re all yelling to see boobs. Well, I’m yelling to see boobs. That was just me. But Zak had a perfect mustache. He used to grow it much longer and curl it with wax. And I normally don’t approach people, I’m not that person. But his whole family seemed cute. They didn’t seem like normal New Orleans vacation people. So I was like: ‘Can I take a picture with you?’ Then we ended up adding each other on Snapchat, because that was the thing back then. And we agreed to meet up the next day after his family was done with their gator cruise and I was finished visiting the strip club. That night we walked along the river until the sun came up. I remember doing handstands on the levees. Then at the end we kissed. It was just a kiss because I was leaving early the next morning, and honestly I thought that would be the end of it. I thought for sure I was never going to see this kid again. But we kept talking, and two weeks later I’m taking his virginity in a Las Vegas hotel room. There was something going on with his stomach that day. Right when we finished he went to the bathroom and started throwing up. I called my girlfriend and said: ‘I don’t think he likes me.’ But it’s been love ever since.”

I’ll be sailing on your deep blue eyes
1/1 4.99k
E/MDNI/18+
Cw: Mention of dirt and filth, rodents (rats/mice), smut, he’s older (it's up to you by how much). Fish/Fishing. Meet cute. Summer love.
John takes you on a first date aboard his fishing boat.  It isn’t at all what you’d expected.
Ao3
Tumblr media
It had taken John three days to say one word to you, but once he finally had, you found it hard to get rid of him.  Not that you wanted to.
For your first date, he invited you for a ride on his boat for some fishing and a sunset cruise along the Mersey Estuary.  Although he'd say it was actually your second.  You didn't think snogging and necking for what seemed like hours, like a couple of teenagers, in the alley behind the pub you worked at all summer qualified, but he could be very convincing.
You were a teacher who supplemented your income cooking in your family's seaside inn during school holidays, and John really liked your great-granddad's fish batter recipe, enough to eat lunch there every day.  He must've known the havoc a steady diet of fryer oil and potatoes could inflict on one's health, but you were too happy for his company to remind him.
And he probably didn’t care anyway.
He was massive.  Wide shoulders and a thick chest.  He must've worked in construction or something active.  He was cut not by fancy weight machines, but by hard labor.
And he must've seen something in you, too, because the food really wasn't anything special.  Especially when your cousin forgot to set the timer and disappeared to text his girlfriend, over-cooking the whole batch of fried cod and serving it anyway.
You wondered how the place stayed open or had any customers at all when you weren't there.
John told you to dress comfortably and to meet him at the docks at 6:00pm.  You weren't prepared for what awaited you when you walked up at 5:45, in a pair of cutoff shorts and a light jacket in case it got cold.  A bottle of good wine poking out of your bag.
“This is your boat?” you asked, as he exited the wheelhouse to greet you at the railing.
It was an ancient prawn trawler, probably from the early 80s, named the William John and about ten meters long.  Made for hauling in loads of fish and crustaceans, not pleasure cruising.  Rusted nearly through and decaying before your eyes.  It creaked and groaned above the lazy waves of the River Mersey like a contrary, lumbering goose.
You’d lived along the river your whole life.  You'd thought you’d gone nose blind to the smells of low tide and petrol exhaust, but you couldn’t place the stench that radiated from the relic.  Notes of wet tobacco, mildew, and dead animals, perhaps?
“What’s the matter?  She’s not pretty enough for you?”  He wiped his grease covered hands on an equally greasy rag, defeating the purpose you thought, and reached up to help you board.
His grip was warm and firm as he helped the bag from your shoulder and caught you against his chest.  His meaty palms on the backs of your thighs and his hot tongue down your throat was enough to momentarily distract you from your doubts.
You hooked your own arms around his neck, and the dampness of his sweat seeped through his layers.  It left you to wonder if he’d showered in anticipation of your visit, or if it would’ve even mattered in the end.  He was filthy either way, and must’ve been dying of heat in his layers.
Undershirt, overshirt, coveralls.  Topped off with the boonie hat he only ever took off while he was sitting at his favorite booth while he ate.
When he finally set you down, you nearly stumbled backwards from the absence of his steadying mouth.  Instead, you let yourself fall forward, further into him as you used his immovable form for balance.
“You look nice.”  His eyes sparked with appreciation as he dragged his gaze from your bare legs back up to your face.  “But are you ready to get a little dirty?”
“What do you mean?”  Suddenly apprehensive that you really did have wildly differing ideas of what constituted a date.
“You’re going to be my first mate for this trip.  How good are you at following orders?”  His hands had traveled to your hip bones, resting as if they were handles molded just for him.
“I’m not so sure I trust this thing in the open water.”  Your eyes fell upon a hose pumping some kind of slurry off the side of the boat.
Best case scenario, it was some sort of waste.  Worst case, it had a leak, and that pump was the only thing keeping it afloat.
“Oh, she’s fine.  You don’t have to worry about her.”  He rocked your hips with his hands, as if gauging your pliancy.  Your soft edges fit perfectly in the crook of his thumbs.
“Then what do I have to worry about?”  You inquired with mock suspicion, as you blew away an annoying whisp of hair from catching to the beading perspiration along your eyebrow.
The humid air, and your closeness to him, already had your pulse up and your pores working overtime to cool you off.  You’d have done anything for a stiff breeze to ease the stickiness between your breasts and thighs.  But there was no respite, not from the sun or the intensity of his hungry stare.
“The tides.  We don’t have much time to waste if we’re going to make it back tonight.”  He slipped a hand behind you to unhook the line from the dock’s cleat, in a smooth motion that brought you closer together.
Trapped between him and the railing behind you.
Being stranded out to sea with him overnight didn’t seem so terrible.  Until you remembered the vessel upon which you were standing.  You did a quick mental check for the last time you’d gotten a tetanus shot.  Primary school, maybe?
“I’ve never worked on a boat before.”  You confessed as you moved out of his way helpfully.  “I just cook the fish, not catch it.”
"Try and relax, yeah?  There's no such thing as a bad crew.  As the Captain, it's my job to take good care of you."
“Is there somewhere I can sit?”  You looked around for a chair, only to find a few grimy plastic buckets and rusted out storage hatches.
“Plenty of time for that later, princess,” he said with a smirking shift to his lips that brought your attention to his thick mustache.  “You’re up here with me.”
An innocent enough reply, as he gestured you to follow him to the wheelhouse, but it brought lewd thoughts to your mind.  The kind of thoughts you’d been having for him since he first walked into your pub a few weeks before.
There was no going back now, you thought, as he fired up the engine with a start that had you clutching his forearm with a white knuckled grip.  Only to have the nerve to laugh as you tried to compose yourself.
“You don’t trust me?”
“No, I do,” but you didn’t sound very convincing.  So, you tried again, locking your eyes with his.  They were a deep blue that matched the sea and held a certainty that made your stomach flutter a bit too fast.  “I do.”
He only nodded, content with your declaration, and motored effortlessly up the river.  Your nervous belly eased as bit as you passed by the Liver buildings and underneath the Queensway and the Kingsway, until you reached the mouth of the open Irish Sea.  The familiar stagnant smell of rotting seaweed and burning fossil fuels gave way to a fresh and crisp ocean breeze.
The sun dipped lower towards the horizon line as you continued north past the statues along Crosby Beach, and the still visible vestiges of shipwrecks that dotted the coast between Fornby and Southport.
Your captain dropped anchor near each of them, and you shared knowledge and debated the history of the wrecks as he casted a few poles into the water, with hopes of hooking into the schools of mackerel that liked to feed in the cavernous ruins.  You'd read about them, and even taught the local lore to your students, but it was a treat to see them in person.
To witness how the sea had claimed them and used them for its own purposes.  Deformed by the tides, and reshaped with mussels, vegetation and barnacles.
And he was right about the fish.  You took turns reeling in over a dozen of the mackerel he was hunting for, and with each catch, you'd gotten bolder.  The smile on your face grew bigger as each of your conquests stacked up into the ice chest.  There was a certain power to it.   In the team effort, between you and him.  A connection to the wild that sent your endorphins rushing and ignited your sense of competition.
He oversaw and advised, with a half-burnt cigar in his mouth and a growling affection for your quick study as he showed you how to measure them and gauge their weight.
"Good fish," he muttered approvingly, after each inspection.
“Good captain,” you flirted back as he caught the bottom of your ass with a firm clap.
An unrest had begun to brew deep between your thighs, an uprising of desire and sensation with every heated glance and flex of jaw beneath his beard.  He was having as much fun as you were, judging by the flick of his tongue along his teeth, and the crinkle of his eyes as he took in your laughter.
A twinge of hope perhaps, and the promise of more excitement to come.
"This one feels bigger than the others," you noted with a warning at the last fishing spot before it was time to head back.  The tip of your rod was bent nearly in half and the force of it pulled you tight against the railing.
"Fuck my old boots, you got a big one there," he grated, urgently, as his arms wrapped around yours and his foot propped against the side to give you more leverage.  “Could be a shark or a tope.”  He coached you through it patiently as you reeled in the line as hard as you could.
By the time you wrestled it aboard, you were both soaked, in both the salty sea spray and each other’s perspiration.  Your blouse drenched through, and your denim shorts smeared with fishy slime.
Your prey gaped at you from the chipped and iron-stained deck as John worked the hook free from its lip.  It was a cod fish, bigger than you’d ever seen.  It must’ve gone after the mackerel that had taken your bait and gotten snagged along with it.
"Now that's a beautiful thing, darling."  He held it up easily by the mouth and tail, and it spanned almost as long as his arms.  "About twelve or thirteen kilos, I think."
The sun had just about set around you and it painted the sky a dazzling pink.  The excitement of your catch buzzed in your chest as you stopped to appreciate the colors of it for the first time.
Your Gran had often spoken of her love for pink skies at night.  A good omen, she’d always said.
Was that the root of your building delight as you watched him pack the giant cod into the cold storage with the rest of the night's catch?  Or was it something else that had you gawking at his waist and hips, appreciating the efficient and powerful way he moved?
"I hope you don't expect me to cook any of that," you chanced a quip as he pulled two of the bigger mackerels out of the ice.
You were wet and getting chilled, as the evening breeze picked up.  Your jacket long forgotten in the wheelhouse.  A shiver crept from your feet to your neck and rubbed at your arms to brush the goosebumps away.
"You can take a seat now, love.”  He dropped his worn and smelly hat on your head and stripped off his thick flannel shirt to wrap around your shoulders as he disappeared into the wheelhouse.  "I'll take it from here."
His overshirt fell nearly to your knees as you retrieved your bottle of wine from your bag and hopped up atop the whaleback storage hatch.  Thankful that you thought to bring a few plastic cups and an opener, just in case.  This boat didn't have wine glasses, of that much you were certain.  And at that point, it didn't matter.
He hadn't capsized you yet.  You could cut him a break for the shabby state of his fishing boat.
"Need any help?"  You offered, as he came back out with a small grill, a cutting board, and a sharp knife.
He turned over two buckets and grunted in a purely masculine way as he sank on top of one and set the board on the other like a makeshift table.  He held the knife with purpose, like an extension of his own hand, as he skillfully gutted, scaled and deboned the fish he’d set aside.
“Thought we’d have a deck-side barbeque.  Enjoy our spoils.”
When he’d finished prepping dinner and set the whole fillets to cook on the grill, he accepted a cup of the offered wine and reclined back against the wall behind him.  You were already ahead by a few glasses, and it made you soften a bit.
You felt closer to him now that he’d wrapped you in his warmth and his scent.  His shirt didn’t smell bad, necessarily, but it was ripe.  Like musk and spice, and the salt of the earth.  You decided then that you were keeping this one.
The shirt.  And maybe him, too.
Curious to learn more about him than the brief bits he’d let slip so far, you prodded him with conversation, and learned that he’d been in the army, serving for several years before retiring and returning home.  He’d only been back a few months before he’d stumbled into your pub for a pint one afternoon and saw you hustling back and forth between the bar and the kitchen.
“I didn’t realize you could cook.  Thought you only ate my fish and chips,” you asked.
The simply prepared, oily filets sizzled over the fiery coals as he checked and flipped them over with his bare hands.
“You think I was there because I like the food?”  A raised eyebrow giving him a rather dashing edge.
“You don’t like my food?”  You feigned a mild outrage, but you didn’t blame him.  You didn’t even like it most of the time.
“I like you.”  He pulled a fresh cigar from his pocket and took his time lighting the end.  A distraction perhaps, so he didn’t have to follow it up with another declaration.
You felt a girlish heat rise to your cheeks as you sipped more wine.  The culprit surely, not the giddiness of his attention.  There wasn’t much you could say to something like that.
Thank you?   I like you, too?  How were you so bad at this?
“I meant to ask earlier.  Who’s William John?  The name of your boat, I mean.”
“That’s me.  My father was a bit of a ne’r do well.  So, when I was born, my grandfather commissioned this boat for him in hopes it would give him some purpose in his life.  A livelihood to provide for his family.  Aside from draining the family trust dry.”
“And he named it after you?  What a lovely gift.”  As rough around the edges as he was, the picture of him as a boy, working alongside his father brought a pang of longing to your heart.
“You can see, by the condition of it, exactly what my father thought of it.”  He filled his mouth with a hot bite of food to test its doneness, and to save himself from revealing more of his secrets.
But he’d said enough, and the weight of what he’d shared made everything about him a bit clearer.  His pride, and his quiet authority.  He ran hot with something to prove, but was more shy when it came to the personal things.  Was he insecure in his ability to be loved?
The pang in your heart deepened, at the thought of him seeing the physical manifestation of the neglect he may have felt all his life.  That it wasn’t his father who taught him to fish, or drive the boat and chart the tides.  That he’d most likely taught himself, out of spite.
You thought of your own family legacy at the pub.  Still reaping the benefits of its name, generations after its greatness had faded.  Desperately in need of repair.  A little love and care.
“She’s not so bad.  Just needs a good cleaning and a coat of paint,” you offered gently, smiling your thanks as he handed you a plate of fish and a few slices of crusty bread.
“You see the vision, do you?”  An inquisitive light of humor in his eyes, surprised maybe that he hadn’t scared you away yet.
“Maybe I spoke too soon.  I haven’t used the bathroom yet.”  There was a brief moment of panic as he looked at you with confusion.  “You do have a toilet, don’t you?  Running water?”
“The head’s down the stairs on the left, but I warn you, it’s a tight fit.”
After dinner, you retreated down below to find that he was right.  The wheelhouse above held the controls and comms equipment, as well as a small galley with a padded bench, a dinette table, and a small cooktop and oven.
Down a set of steps was the bathroom on one side and a sleeping area on the other.  A lumpy mouse-eaten mattress and a closet full of shelves holding everything from extra rope, bottles of motor oil, and dog-eared books.
A rucksack full of clothes and a few pairs of boots were stuffed haphazardly under the bed.
Somehow, the bathroom was smaller than the closet.  The door was broken and didn’t close, and there was a toilet and a sink, with a detachable shower head hanging above to wash over the drain on the floor.  It was wet and a bit slippery, with a newish bar of soap in the corner, solving the mystery that he had showered at least sometime over the last few days or so.
You settled for just washing your hands, but the faucet levers were stuck with layers of corrosion and scum.  Abandoning the effort entirely, you chanced a look at yourself in the cloudy mirror as the light bulb buzzed like a dying insect above your head.
Before you could take in your appearance, you heard him move behind you.  Felt his shadow take up mass, displacing the air and affecting the atmosphere like a weather system.
“Are you living here?”  You asked, turning around to find him propped against the narrow doorway with his shoulder.  He must have to pivot sideways just to make it through.
“I’ve gotten used to worse, if you can believe it.  This is downright cozy compared to the places I’ve been.”
It didn’t seem like an exaggeration, and you believed him.  You understood then why he’d been such an effective captain.  Why men followed him into hell.  Because he’d probably already seen the worst—and survived.  He could take it, whatever it was.
He could take care of you.
Nothing about this date could be considered romantic.  You’d spent the first few weeks that you’d known him talking about yourself and your family.  Chatting his ears off while he ate and drank, patiently listening to your life story.
This date was to show you his.  To show you him.  To test whether you could follow him.  Trust him.  No frills.  No putting on airs.
You could either hide from it, or embrace it.  It’d been too long since you’d kissed him, you came to the conclusion in that dank, stuffy space.  Hours at least, so you made the first move.  And it was if he’d been waiting for it.  Your acceptance.  Acquiescence.
Because once his hands met your waist, he made a sound of possession, feral and slightly unnerving.  One that bridged no argument between what is and what could be.
What was.
Hands and mouths, hips against his cock.  You stripped each other bare and collapsed into the bed with the squeaking of coils and the scurrying of something you hoped was smaller than a rat.
You took off his undershirt and chanced a look at his bare chest.  The tan lines between light and dark were stark around his arms and neck.  They brought a contentedness to your breath as you buried your face into his collarbone.
“What you laughing at, love?”  He pulled your face up to meet his, towards his eyes once more.  You struggled to find your focus in their depths.
“I like you, too.”  You hoped he would understand.  A simple thing, and yet you both had something to loose.
He only smirked, knowingly, and tipped a finger against the brim of the hat you’d forgotten you were still wearing.
“You’re in charge, sugar.  And I’m going to fuck you to until you beg me to stop.”
“Please. Yes!”  You were right, he was a weather system.  And you were at his whim.  Do your worst, you wanted to scream.  To throw a bottle of empty spirits into his core and watch it be sucked away.
But he wasn’t wild like a storm.  He was steady, like the shore.  He caught the bottle and gave it back to you, quietly.  Gently.
You felt a breath of fresh air along your bottom as he pulled you pants away.  And the humidity found you quickly while you writhed sticky and needy along his scratchy, hairy dick.
“You’re just one surprise after another, aren’t you?”  You murmured, as he slipped his thick cock past your entrance.
Tighter than you thought he’d be.  A fit with no margin for error.  Snug and tight and welcome.
It stretched, reached places uncharted within.   You could whimper and shy away, but not with him.  You held steady and open, talking all of it.  As much as he could give.
“I could say the same for you, sweetheart.”  He wadded up your discarded shirt.  His shirt, and placed it under your head.  Its scent masking the moth balls and the dust as he buried your nose into the mattress.
And the remaining hours passed in a dream.  You beneath him, and then atop his face.  Aligned with his hips as you shuttered and rode his length in that tiny cot.  Kicking and screaming and begging for your own release.  Again and again.
“Do you want the good news or the bad news?”  You felt the thin mattress creak and dip as he slipped back down behind you, finally, when it was all over.
“Hmm?”  Your brain was too fucked out to form anything resembling a coherent thought, even if your voice hadn’t been broken.  You were sure they’d heard your screaming in Wales.  Maybe even Ireland.
“We missed the tide window.  About five more hours before we can attempt to go back.”
You whimpered, feeling the crush between your legs and the scratchy fabric at your back as he turned you over and pushed your knees up around your ears.
“The good news is I’ve got plenty of fuel in the tank.  A good captain prepares for all possibilities.”
“You did this on purpose, didn’t you?”  You couldn’t bring yourself to put any real accusation behind it.
“Yes and no.  I had my hopes.”  At least he was honest.
A relieved gasp escaped you as a warm towel greeted your sore cunt, and not the blunt tip of his cock or the prodding of his thick fingers.  Instead, he cleaned you up in soothing strokes that lulled you into security as you buried your face in the shirt that had become your pillow.
You awoke alone in the tiny bed sometime later, nearly hitting your head as you sat up too quickly.  With the size of his frame, he must not have spent much time in such a cramped space.  Eager to find him, and not be left alone with the chittering sound you could only imagine were mice, you slipped on his shirt and creaked your way up the stairs.
You found him at the helm, sipping a hot tea as he looked out at the lights of the city off in the distance.  Back to civilization.  You curled up on the padded bench beside him and watched in a comfortable silence as the light slowly returned to the sky.
By the time you returned to the dock in the early hours of the morning, you felt rancid.  Your skin itched, hopefully not from bedbugs, and your muscles burned and ached.  But you were smiling, floating with the kind of hopeful feeling that only came after something so new, so different, so crazy, it turned your whole world upside down.
“What’d you think?  Come back again tonight, princess?”  He helped you disembark the boat and folded his arms across his chest expectantly.
“I’ll have to think about it,” you replied sweetly, knowing you’d see him again at lunch in a few hours.  Already looking forward to it.
And of course you showed up that night at the same time, and the same place.  Bringing with you more wine, an armful of industrial grade cleaning products, air freshener, mouse traps, a few preemptive cranberry pills, pest spray, and a rubber mattress pad cover meant for bedwetting toddlers.
You slipped into an easy routine together, until the end of summer.  Some days you’d leave the dock and sail overnight a little further down the coast.  Others, you’d stay in the port and work on the boat.  He’d do the hard job of making repairs and buffing off the rust with a belt sander, while you’d carefully apply coats of thick, maritime-grade paint.
Below deck, you helped scrub off the nearly forty years of mold and crud from the head and the galley until the true surfaces shined like new.   You finished it off with clean bedding and a decluttered storage area to hold the few things he’d owned.
He lent you his hat to shield your nose from the sun while you worked, and wrapped you in his layers at night when the chilly air crept in.
You brought a bit of life back into your family’s restaurant with fresh and simple grilled mackerel and curried cod recipes that your customers had raved about, and the William John got a makeover worthy of its name.
And it had been the most fun you’d had in your whole life.  Your favorite summer holiday yet.
On the last official day before the school year started again, with your classroom set up and your lesson plan laid out, you ended your final shift in the kitchen and found him waiting for you in the alley out back.
A bouquet of flowers in one hand and an enigmatic expression on his face.  His eyes danced with promise and his mouth seemed to twitch excitedly with words unsaid.
“What’s all this, John?  I thought I was meeting you later.”
“I wanted to pick you up,” he said, as if it wasn’t a short walk to the pier.  But his hands found your waist as soon as he’d handed over the blooms, and he set your legs around his hips.  A shocked yelp escaped your lips before being silenced by his.  You could kiss him for days and it wouldn’t be enough, you mused as he pulled away first.  “I have something to show you.”
For a moment, you thought he intended to carry you the entire way, but he set you down gently and instead took your hand.  A silly, romantic thing on the surface, when more accurately he was just too reluctant to let you go.
His instinct to guide and lead, to pull you along in step beside him.  For your part, your curiosity had you skipping quickly to match his long stride, eager to see what had him so worked up.  Bustling with a nervous energy that contradicted his usually stoic demeanor.
By the time you reached the boat, he’d slowed down, walking forward more deliberately.  Waiting to see if you’d notice his gesture on your own.
He’d finished painting the hull since you’d seen it last.  It no longer read William John in tarnished, fading letters.  In its place was your name.  Elegant and bold.  As if he’d tattooed it on his own chest.
“Oh, love, you shouldn’t have!”  Your hands covered your mouth, and your eyes brimmed with shocked, happy tears.
“She’s as much yours as she is mine now.  Seemed fitting.  For a fresh start.”  He draped a lazy arm around your shoulders and kissed the top of your head.  “A new beginning.”
“You’d better take good care of her.”  You smiled up at him, your forehead barely grazing the bottom of his chin.
“Do you think she’s ready for her maiden voyage?  One of the lads I used to serve with is up in Glasgow.  Wants to meet for some creel fishing for langoustines next week.”
“For how long?”  You’d be busy soon with the new term in full swing, and you’d quietly begun to mourn not seeing him in the restaurant every day, or sharing space in his wheelhouse each night.
Change was inevitable, and it often came swiftly all at once.
“A month or so.  I wish you could come with me.  Never had a better first mate.”
“Bring me back a few crates of those prawns, will you?  I’ll put them on the specials menu.”
Saying goodbye to the haze of summer, and to him, was hard but you knew he’d be back.  Especially when he dropped his cherished boonie hat on your head and told you to keep it warm for him.  And sailed off in a boat he’d named after you.
All the love to @the-sweet-hibiscus for your early support for this.

Prompt 2 - Doctor
@jegulus-microfic July 2, Word count 1000
Regulus had always dreamed about being a doctor. His parents had mostly approved. They would have preferred he’d chosen to be a solicitor or an accountant, but they decided that doctor was also a respectable profession as long as he went into the correct area. Such as plastics, where all the money was. They had a friend who ran the plastics department at St Thomas’s in London and they arranged for him to train under him once Regulus finished medical school.
But Regulus had other plans. He secretly sent out feelers to other hospitals and got offered a job in York. It was the one that he’d secretly hoped for. Sirius had moved up to York after he’d fled their family home. He’d gone to university there and fallen in love with the kindest man Regulus had ever met. Of course, his parents didn’t know that he knew any of this.
He’d had all his correspondence sent to Sirius’s house and he’d go out on daily walks to phone his brother on a separate phone Sirius had sent him and paid for so they could talk without their parents finding out.
Graduation day came. He was top of his class and a highly sought-after new doctor. He had his picture taken, said goodbye to his classmates and made a run for it. He left his parents complaining about the pitiful excuse for food that had been laid out for them and ran to Sirius’s waiting car.
“Hey, Reggie!” Sirius’s smile was full of love and Regulus couldn’t help himself. He flung himself across the gear stick and hugged his brother as tightly as he could. “I’ve missed you too,” Sirius spoke quietly into his ear.
They rushed back to his parent’s house and hurriedly carted the few boxes of his belongings down the three flights of stairs and out to Sirius’s car. Soon they were on the M1 and on their way north.
He hadn’t just left his parents with no idea where he’d gone. He’d told them he had found another job and was sorry he left like he did, but he had no interest in learning how to pull back wrinkly old skin, so people could kid themselves that they looked younger than they were. He thanked them for everything they’d done for him and hoped that they would still want him in their lives.
Remus was waiting for them at the front door. He flung his arms open and gave Regulus a firm, warm hug.
“I’m so glad you made it, Reggie,” He said as he ruffled Regulus’s hair. They’d become good friends over the years since he and Sirius had met, even before they’d started dating. Sirius would drunk dial him and Regulus would spend most of the night chatting with Remus while Sirius did keg stands and made a show of himself.
“Can we take you on a tour tomorrow? You can get to know the city before you start your first shift.” Sirius asked over dinner. Sirius had braved the locals to go to the chippy round the corner. It was excellent, the best fish and chips he’d ever had.
Regulus went to sleep that night, finally feeling free for the first time in his life. He took Sirius up on his offer to see the small city. They ate breakfast and hopped on a bus into the city centre. Sirius took him to see the giant cathedral towering over the other buildings. Then through the Shambles, an ancient medieval street. The narrow street was jam-packed with shops and shoppers. The top levels of the buildings overhanging the street below. They took a walk along the bar walls that wrapped around the entire city, protecting it from enemy armies. Sirius took him on a river cruise down the Ouse and then into the Dungeons to learn about Dick Turpin.
“Stand and deliver, your money or your life!” Sirius had yelled at him as he jabbed him in the back with a fake sword he’d gotten from the gift shop.
“Turpin would have used pistols, not a sword,” Regulus pointed out. Sirius shrugged and poked him again. They walked down by the river to get home. His feet hurt but it had been worth it. The city was beautiful and he’d spent more time with his brother than he had for years. Tomorrow he’d start at the hospital and he needed to be wide awake to be on his game.
Sirius dropped him off at the door, kissed his cheek and handed him a packed lunch.
“Look at our boy Remus, all grown up and off to be a doctor.” Sirius pretended to wipe a tear from his eyes.
“There, there dear. He’s a big boy now, we have to let him go,” Remus made his voice deep but struggled by the end, as he couldn’t help laughing.
“Yeah, yeah, love you too. C'ya later.” He blew them a kiss anyway and walked through the doors.
The resident in charge of them was the most handsome man Regulus had ever seen. He had to take a few deep breaths to calm his speeding heart. He felt suddenly very warm and could feel himself beginning to sweat.
“Dr Black?” Dr James Potter looked up from his list. “You wouldn’t happen to be related to Sirius Black would you?”
“Yes, he’s my brother, Dr Potter,” Regulus replied in as even a voice as he could.
“He’s one of my best friends, I’ll be sure to let him know how you’re getting on,” Dr Potter winked at him. Regulus felt lightheaded. Oh, great, now he not only fancied his mentor but the guy just happened to be Sirius’s friend. He should have known better than to move in with his brother. Well, he was going to prove he deserved to be here.
Dr Potter looked at him, his eyes glimmering with something.
“Well, this is going to be fun,” James grinned widely before they began the morning rounds.

Hajime’s nineteenth birthday is the first he spends without his best friend.
They’re far from each other and far from home. It’s strange, Hajime thinks, to no longer be confined by mountains and farm fields. Not that California doesn’t have those things—it’s just . . . different. The air is different. The sunshine is different. The way Americans call him by his first name is different. The fact that the driver’s seat is now on the left side of the car instead of the right is different.
Not having Oikawa Tooru by his side is different.
It wasn’t like Tooru hadn’t tried. He’d sent Hajime a birthday text at the stroke of midnight, and then they spent two hours FaceTiming each other until Hajime had shooed Tooru off, because he knew that Tooru had practice in a few hours and needed at least some shut-eye. And then Hajime had laid there, in the dark of his apartment, wishing and wanting and aching for something a million miles away.
Five thousand and five-hundred thirty-nine miles, to be specific. Not that Hajime is counting. Not that he’s keeping track of every minute that passes between their time zones, because that would be all kinds of pathetic, and Hajime likes to think he's coping with Tooru's absence much better than that.
Anyways. His nineteenth birthday. Off to a great start, obviously.
It’s also the first birthday he spends with Ushijima Wakatoshi. If you had told Hajime last year that he’d run into Ushijima at a university in California to speak with Ushijima’s father about internships, he probably wouldn't have believed you. If you had told him he’d be stuck in the backseat of a minivan with Ushijima, cruising through the southern Californian desert to watch the stars on his nineteenth birthday—American pop music cranked high, hot wind grazing his shoulders, the van floor littered with chip crumbs and empty boba cups stuffed in the cupholders, with people he’s barely known for the better part of a week—he definitely wouldn’t have believed you.
But here he is. Munching on shrimp chips, listening to Ushijima’s friends belt out Fall Out Boy.
Ushijima’s UCI friends are . . . something. Riding shotgun is Kevin Nguyen—he’s what Ushijima calls a “frat boy” and a “gym bro”, but Kevin seems nice enough, if not overly familiar. Selene Hiraishi wears dramatic eyelashes and nails, and her family has been friends with Utsui since he moved to California, so Ushijima’s known her for some time. Citlaly Torres has about a dozen piercings in her ears and graciously offered to drive for the three-hour trip to the park from the university. Avery Cherent, Hajime was happy to discover, is a fellow Godzilla nerd with short silver-dyed high-top curls. Jaesung Han is never seen without their black bomber jacket and a pair of ripped jeans, and—Hajime has noticed—keeps their eyes on him more than the others seem to do.
They’ve taken to Hajime like ants to a cookie, and Hajime is grateful for it, really. He's grateful for anything that can distract him from that empty, aching tug in his chest. From knowing that he'd wake up lonely, and that today would have been a lonely day if it weren't for these plans.
The road is bumpy, and honestly—Hajime is hesitant to even call it a road. It’s more like a wide stretch of dirt that’s been cleared for cars. Joshua trees—the park’s namesake plant—dot the landscape far into the horizon, sharing ground with desert brush and craggy boulders. Outside the open windows, the sky looks like it’s been brushed with watercolor; deep oranges and purples and pinks bleed from the setting sun like the branches of a river.
Citlaly turns into a pullout, kills the engine, and twists around to grin at everyone. “Made it in one piece. What did I tell you guys?”
“You almost crashed into that Honda Civic right off the freeway,” Kevin says. “‘One piece’, my ass.”
“The One Piece is going to be a far greater treasure than your ass, Kev,” says Avery loftily. “They haven’t gone through six hundred and twenty-eight episodes just for that.”
Jaesung claps Kevin’s shoulder as they clamber out. “Don’t worry, Kev, I think you have a great ass.”
Kevin beams. “Aw, Jae! I think you have a great ass, too!”
“Your friends are weird,” Hajime remarks while he and Ushijima hop out the backseat. “Nice, but weird.”
Ushijima smiles. Before today, Hajime hadn’t even known that was something the guy was capable of doing. “They are, aren’t they?
-- an excerpt from wherever you go in this world (i'll come along), an iwaoi bday fic i really really wanted to finish today but perhaps later this week???
