Today was the day, the day you spend time with Leon.

What did you do in Europe?

Uh oh you opened up the floodgates friend. See, I suffer from "post europe syndrome," wherein I will talk about it every chance I get. I'm sure my European followers are scratching their heads right now in confusion that the crazy lady is so happy she got to go over, but as a kid who religiously watched Passport to Europe with Samantha Brown on the travel channel it was a dream come true. It was the most transformative experience of my life, for more reasons than the obvious that I got to live my dream.

In short, everything I wanted to and much, much more.

I do want to preface it by saying I went with a travel group because it was my first time traveling alone and I wanted the safety net of a group/tour director to haul us from one place to the next. It's also a great way to meet people because a lot of people actually go alone. I feel comfortable going by myself now, but at that time I was lured by the safety net of a group, and it also admittedly kept my parent's mind at ease.

I did their big European tour and I was away for over a month. In Barcelona I saw a flamenco show, went to the local market, and wandered through Park Guell. From day one I wanted to party hard because to be frank I was a goody two shoes in college and was obsessed with being "the good daughter," who didn't party and get involved in anything questionable so I knew I wanted to explore and party overseas. Yep, did just that in Barcelona, a city whose night life goes hard. It was magical. Cramped, sweaty, but something I'll never forget. I did everything I could dream of in Paris, my second time there--the opera house, the louvre, getting rained on in Montmartre. The Moulin Rouge. Having my own solo day by going to the Orsay and the Richelieu library. Walking the city by myself. London: everything I wanted and more. Saw three shows, including my favorite, Phantom of the Opera. Met the phantom. Went to the Globe, saw Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh's first house, the whole journey feeling a bit illegal because I was in a rich residential neighborhood. Worth it. Rossetti Exhibit at the Tate--meeting one of my oldest moots Jen. Perfection.

Amsterdam, Went to the Anne Frank house. Got drunk on a river cruise. Laughing my butt off as me and a few friends wandered the city. French fries. And then in Greece, in Athens I fell in love with the city. The food, touching our ancientness in a way I had never felt before. Sitting at a rooftop bar and feeling like you can touch the Parthenon. Then sailing in Paros, jumping into the Mediterranean sea. Being looked at like I was a revelation, like I was more than myself. In meeting so many amazing people I not only got to enjoy their company but I also saw myself in a completely different way. Writing feels different now for so many reasons, because I am different. And lust, I have learned, isn't like fire. It's earthen. When I want I am ancient as Athens.

Day 4 - July 2nd

Getting started on a long ride like this requires time, adjustments, and rest. We knew we were not in the best touring shape. We knew we didn’t have enough experience on our bikes when loaded with gear. Travel, in general, can be tough on the body.

Since Ed needed a bike adjustment and we all needed a rest we decided to take some extra time in the morning and shorten our ride in the afternoon. 20 miles instead of 56 seemed reasonable. And it boasted our spirits to think that we might be in camp before 5pm.

Understand that we had a target destination but no idea on nightly accommodations. We believed there was camping but we didn’t have details. Regardless, this is an adventure right! We moved forward.

We left Fernie after lunch and found gravel roads to avoid some tough single track. We didn’t realize that we also shaved about 5 miles off the day and we were happy to discover that later. While the road was generally up and down, we all felt good and we were not fatigued by the effort.

Our destination was Elko, a town of 140 that supposedly had camping. Three or four miles out of town we started to notice more cars on the road and a few potential primitive campsites. As we rolled along, three people walking with towels and backpacks asked if we passed the trailhead for Silver Spring. Within a tenth of a mile there were at least 100 cars parked along the road with more coming in. We learned that there was a big party going on at Silver Spring. If it wasn’t a 1500’ hike with a significant climb we would have gone to check it out.

A mile or so later we dropped across a river and saw a few more primitive campsite in the hills near the water. We passed on those in the hopes of finding better. Elko had nothing.

We rolled out of town to find construction on our route. We stopped at a C-Store that was packed with Silver Spring party goers buying ice and beer. There, we researched camping and found an RV park about 10 miles down the road. Oh well, so much for a short day!

We bombed down a hill, crossed the Elk River, and climbed up the other side. Seconds later we rolled up on a dairy bar with a line of people placing orders. We jumped on line too! What the heck, it was a short day so why not hit all the stops!

After a couple miles of highway we turned off into a gravel road that took us through meadows and lightly forested hills. Generally downhill, we cruised through the miles. The road was quite dusty and any approaching cars weren’t exactly happy to see us. We wondered what camping in a nearby RV park was going to be like.

Nope, we’re not going that way today!

PR RV Park and Campground was near capacity with full time trailers and RVs. There was a shower, laundry, and, unfortunately, an outhouse. They gave us the first space next to the entrance. The camp host made a special point of telling us that they test their water weekly and it met all standards. If he told us twice he told us four times.

We were settling in when our neighbors in the next lot came home. Kevin & Shelley had a full time space in the park as did a few of their relatives. They immediately offered us chairs, firewood, and weed. We accepted 2 of the 3. Kevin came back with beers for all of us a few minutes later. He gave us a little of their story and then went back to his place. He’s a truck driver, Shelley is an account for an oil company and does the books for a few companies on the side. She also has a janitorial services company. They come down to the Baynes Lake area from Calgary and spend as much of the summer as they can there. They have a pontoon boat and they go out on Lake Koocanusa to fish for their 15 limit of Kokanee Salmon on a regular basis. It ticks them off that Americans have a 50 limit on the same lake.

Oh, and Kevin is a musician. He plays guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He loves to rock out the RV park on special occasions. He was good enough to leave country music playing for us until 10pm.

And a little while later Kevin came back with more beer and more stories. He just met his 67 year old 1/2 brother who his mother had given up for adoption when she was 16. The brother and his wife like their liquor and usually start drinking after their morning coffee. They usually polish off a 40 (1/2 gallon) every day.

Regardless, Kevin and Shelley are salt of the earth people. They were generous and engaging. They didn’t hesitate to tell us their story and ask us ours.

After Kevin and Shelley headed down to the relatives to play cards we burned some firewood and hit the sleeping bags by 10:30pm.

Oh I have a summer plan! I went to London for a work conference last year. This year, I’m going to Paris! I just have to buy the plane ticket and everything else is fully covered by work!!!! It’s gonna be my second time doing anything like this. What sort of traveling experience do you have?

My dad always used to travel for work, so we've been some places.

In 2003 we spend a summer in Paris.

In 2004-2005 we spent 16 months in England while my dad's company's project was based there.

In 2007 we did 7 weeks in Ireland because dad was in Dublin.

In 2011 we did a family vacation in Costa Rica.

I went to Italy with my college cohort in 2014.

In 2019 we did a family vacation in Greece with a pitstop in Turkey

Last year my mom, dad, grandma and I went on a Rhine river cruise starting in Amsterdam and we went to cities in Germany, Austria, passed through Lichtenstein, and ended in Oberaumergau for the passion play

And last-this year we did what was probably the last family vacation in Israel, Jordan, and Egypt.

I feel sometimes like I've been to more countries than states, but I know that's not true. We never would've traveled so much if dad hadn't earned so many air miles and hotel points from traveling, so I'm very blessed.

Reflections on 5 Week Solo Trip

I’m home from a 5-week trip that included group whitewater rafting in Morocco, a group tour in Jordan with more walking than most, and a week long solo self-guided walking tour in Alsace, plus extra day’s sightseeing on my own in all locations, and days traveling from one location to another.

This solo travel is fairly new for me. For almost 50 years Cathie and I traveled together. We had similar interests and travel styles and it was great. But in recent years health issues have limited her ability to travel and I found if I wanted to travel I needed to go on my own.

So I’ve been doing group tours and true solo travel. After doing all of that on this recent extended trip I’ve had a chance to think about how that works for me.

First, it’s never as good without Cathie. I always miss her company while traveling. But given that what works and what doesn’t?

Group tours work OK. Some better than others depending on the guide and the group. I’m not used to putting up with disorganized guides or group members that delay the group by being late, etc. So I have less tolerance than most I guess. But it’s a good way if I’m careful to pick a good organization. I’m still exploring how to pick those.

Solo travel on walking tours where I have a walk that will take much of the day works too. I’m pretty comfortable walking with a purpose and destination on my own.

General sightseeing is a bigger problem for me. I have a harder time being motivated and keeping going on my own. I enjoy the ability to explore and experience in company and discuss the experience.

So the unstructured days on my own were the least enjoyable. One solution is a local guided tour for a day. That certainly helps.

At the same time we are learning to travel differently so that Cathie and I can travel together. We hope to try a river cruise this fall. That hasn’t been what we wanted in the past but if it allows us to travel together it will be great.

We are also trying a walking oriented group trip in Alaska this summer that has different levels of difficulty each day, including some that should work for her.

So we are experimenting with multiple options to learn how we can keep traveling.

Getting old clearly requires adjustments and really continuous adjustments. So we will keep going as best we can.
