Maro’s “Look Inside the House”: A Duskmourn: House of Horrors Teaser
The new plane of Duskmourn is a perilous place, but if you can survive the horrors within you may come out stronger than ever. I’ve been there. I’ve seen the darkness and to that end, here are some hints of things to come – but will this information help or hinder your journey? Only time will tell. As with any good piece of horror media, you’re only receiving partial information and things are not always as they appear: 
 First up, here are some things you can expect:  
• A component of the set with a frame using technology first designed for an Un-set
• A tweak on an ability word that first appeared in the third set of a block
• Counters used in the set: +1/+1, -1/-1, finality, flying, lifelink, lore, loyalty, nest, possession, rev, stun, and time
• The first ability word to reference “second main phase”
• A 10/1 creature for UUU
• A variant on a mechanic that itself was a variant on another mechanic
• A modal three mana white mass removal spell
• A character returns as a legendary creature that first appeared in flavor text in Alpha
• A new ability word that cares about a card type and a (new) keyword action
• Creature tokens: 1/1 white Toy, 1/1 white Glimmer, 2/1 white Insect, 3/1 white Spirit, 4/4 white Beast, blue token copy, X/X blue Spirit, 2/2 black Horror, 6/6 black Demon, 1/1 red Gremlin, 1/1 red Balloon, 2/2 green Spider, 1/1 black and green Insect, and 0/0 green and blue Fractal
 Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:  
• “unlock a locked door”

Ghouls & Their Favorite Horror Movies (1980s edition)
In honor of Halloween being just a few days away (!!!) have some thoughts about the ghouls and their favorite horror movies. Narrowed down to the 1980s because that's probably my favorite decade for horror (shoutout to the 70s though).

Dew: City of the Living Dead, The Evil Dead, Pieces, Cannibal Holocaust
Resident horror snob and ultimate gorehound. The bloodier, sleazier, and more fucked up the better. Huge fan of the Italian horror directors, especially “Godfather of Gore” and king of onscreen eyeball trauma Lucio Fulci. City of the Living Dead (aka The Gates of Hell) is his favorite, it’s gory, blasphemous, and just obscure enough for him to feel smug when nobody else has heard of it. The biggest horror fan of the group, he’s seen it all and is always on the hunt for something weird and new that he hasn’t seen yet (a difficult task). Introduced pretty much all of the other ghouls to their favorite horror movies.

Aether: Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, Night of the Creeps, Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Lover of all the best 80s horror comedies. Silly and fun without being too intense or mean-spirited. The more over the top the better. Aether movie nights are always the most fun. Loves Return of the Living Dead because of the awesome punk rock soundtrack and 80s punk aesthetic. Secretly loves horror comedies the best because he gets to see Dew laughing the whole time. He and Dew are the most annoying about quoting movies back and forth to each other nonstop.

Mountain: The Thing, They Live, Aliens, From Beyond
Loves his horror with a side of sci-fi. Major John Carpenter and Stuart Gordon fan (who isn’t). Also a huge fan of sci-fi horror with amazing practical effects and The Thing is the king of them all (he loves the original too, for the plant-man monster of course).

Swiss: Hellraiser, Videodrome, Society, Street Trash
Body horror enthusiast. If it's slimy, horny, and taboo then he’s all about it. Unsurprisingly the biggest Cronenberg fan of the bunch. Huge fan of the Hellraiser series, what with all the leather and the chains and the flesh. Will also sit you down and force you to watch Society if you’ve never seen it (you will thank him later).

Phantom: The Monster Squad, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Near Dark
Of course it’s gotta be The Monster Squad. Phantom loves the classic Universal Monsters and Monster Squad has them all, wrapped up in a super fun 80s horror comedy with great writing and memorable characters. Will undoubtedly yell WOLFMAN’S GOT NARDS at the most inopportune times. Loves vampire movies the most and secretly thinks of his pack a little bit like the group of vampires in Near Dark.

Aurora: Night of the Comet, Slumber Party Massacre, Phenomena, Sleepaway Camp 2
GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS. Loves seeing pretty women absolutely kick ass onscreen. And any horror movie with a female villain will almost always become a favorite. Loves Night of the Comet because why shouldn’t a couple of valley girl cheerleaders get to enjoy a mall shopping spree while also mowing down hordes of comet zombies with machine guns?

Cirrus: Possession, Altered States, The Shining, the Ninth Configuration
Queen of psychological horror. Her picks usually toe the line between horror and other genres. Cirrus movie nights almost always have to come with a “palate cleanser” movie right after (usually a Cumulus or Aether pick). Dew secretly thinks she has the coolest taste of the bunch.

Cumulus: Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Blood Diner, TerrorVision
80s horror comedies (horny version). Like Aether, Cumulus loves horror comedies. But for her, the sexier and more ridiculous the better. Always thinks a movie would do better with more boobs and full-frontal. Vocal advocate for more male nudity in movies. Linnea Quigley is her horror idol.

Sunshine: Slumber Party Massacre 2, Black Roses, Trick or Treat, Slaughterhouse Rock
Number one champion of the rock & roll horror subgenre. Horror and rock music were both public enemy number one during the Satanic Panic of the 80s, and Sunny loves movies that lean into it. Slumber Party Massacre 2 is the most fun with the leather-clad rockabilly slasher facing off against members of an all-girl rock group with his massive (unmistakably phallic) electric guitar-drill.

Rain: Jaws 3, Humanoids from the Deep, The Fog, The Abyss
Absolutely nobody is shocked to discover Rain is a fan of underwater/nautical horror. He doesn’t even care if a movie is “good” as long as it’s wet and full of weird monsters or creatures. Avid defender of Jaws 3 (it has dolphins, hello). His taste is all over the place quality-wise, from b-movie creature features like Humanoids, to the cozy coastal ambiance of the Fog. As the only ghoul who can breathe underwater, he loves to watch others squirm during the breathing fluid scene in the Abyss.

Good Queer horror movies?
I've probably got like three other asks like this floating around but what the hell we got halloween around the corner, let's take another spin.
Like, how good and how queer right? For example, I would put Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation solidly in the queer category. However, they do require a little bit of background reading and review to grok the queerness. There are also buckets of old movies with queer coding and queer subtext, but I lean more modern, so I'm gonna put down some favorites where the queerness is the text. The down side is it means I'm missing out on some movies I probably should recommend, but I can't sit here and parse out fifty titles.
Anyway, off the top recently I would say Sound of Violence has been a huge favorite of mine, with a queer and murderous protagonist, following an exploration of body horror and synesthesia of sound evoking a sexual response. This isn't for everyone but I adore it.
All Cheerleaders Die is a regular recommendation of mine on queer horror, although parts of it haven't aged very well. But on the other hand the theme of love and queerness is delicious, with a witch whose powers and love for her girlfriend are so strong they literally bring her back from the dead. More recently released is Seance, which is good but a bit middle of the road insofar as horror goes. Still and all, has a bit of the vibe of All Cheerleaders Die but with less of the tone deaf bits.
Der Samurai is, probably unintentionally, my favorite transfeminine horror movie. One trans woman, one katana, one cop trying to repress his queerness, one small town of bigots, and one night of explosive bloodshed. I've watched this movie three times and it always leaves me breathless.
Equally beautiful is Titane, a transmasculine horror movie with strong body horror elements and a great deal of unreliable perspective from the camera. While we can't tell everything that is real all the time, the hallucinatory journey is full of moments of heartbreak and beauty. I actually had to turn it off a moment in overwhelming happiness at the line "you have always been my son."
The trans horror that gave me the most intense experience, and the most trauma, was Boarding School, about a child experiencing the first sense of being trans, but while also undergoing a combination of abuse and trauma and generational trauma at a school where parents leave children they want to forget they have. Between the throughline of the protagonist's Jewish heritage, the moments of self-discovery which transform swiftly to shame or violence, and the moment of claiming themselves for themselves like a phoenix, if you are trans, this movie will both fuck you up and call you out really bad.
I recently saw Jamie Marks Is Dead, a gay ghost story that is also a wonderful illustration of how limited the idea of horror being about "scary movies" is. It's painful and sad and true and had me weeping. Spiral (2019, aka "the good one") is an excellent killer cult / satanic panic type of movie which also really explores the differences of the gay experience a white guy has vs a black guy, with a big heaping of gaslighting and PTSD. While I think Jamie Marks is a more soulful movie, Spiral stands apart as a great example of how a horror movie can be a very good conventional horror movie that happens to have queer protagonists, while including lots of juicy subtext to make it a deeper and richer experience.
There's a few more solid wlw movies I'm gonna toss in at the end here, which I think are pretty good but don't have the energy to go into a lot of detail: Thelma, Raw, and Bloodthirsty. Of course there is one widely Tumblr-popular wlw horror movie that you might notice hasn't been included in the body of this text. The omission is intentional, and judgemental.

at risk of sounding like one of those people, do you have any recommended films for someone who wants to look into horror but doesnt know where to start? Everywhere I've seen just recommends the same 4 or so 80s slasher movies. Or an anthology of some kind that showcases the different subgenres, ik things like that exist for SFF but I dont know enough about the horror genre to know where to look for stuff there

horror movies anon from a while ago i watched a lot of your suggestions i rly liked ginger snaps and all cheerleaders die!! do you have any recommendations for gorier horror movies and or ones set in abandoned hospitals and the like?
:D yayyyyy yayayay!! so glad you liked those :3 well for gore ohohoho i got you. im a terrifier (and terrifier 2) apologist the gore is phenomenal imo thats the whole point of those movies. other fun and gory films of various subgenres are bliss, american mary, braindead, hostel (it sort of sucks. but if youre after gore…), the descent, inside, and laid to rest. revenge and the sadness are both gory as well but those also both deal with rape
and hmmmm….abandoned hospital is tricky. session 9 definitely fits the bill, so does grave encounters. the void might also work, its not abandoned but its a very light staff… i think deadgirl is set in an old hospital, but thats a weird one and wouldnt usually make my recommendation lists. depending on what about that setting appeals to you, id also suggest the autopsy of jane doe (isolated medical aspect), visiting hours and hospital massacre (self explanatory, the setting is a functioning hospital), and slaughter high, the task, last shift, and bad things (abandoned locations).

Blood Diner (1987)

Though Blood Diner is called a horror comedy, it’s never scary. It is plenty bloody, however. With abundant dark laughs and a self-aware sleaziness that gives the film a lot of personality, this is one I could see the right audiences calling a new favorite.   Brothers Michael and George Tutman (Rick Burks and Carl Crew) are the owners of a wildly popular vegetarian restaurant. The restaurant’s secret? The special ingredient is meat. What kind of meat? Human. See, as children, they witnessed their beloved uncle Anwar Namtut (Drew Godderis) die in a police shootout following a ritualistic massacre. They've resurrected him as a brain in a jar and seek to fulfill his mission: resurrecting the ancient Lumerian goddess Sheetar. To bring her back to life, they need to collect body parts from a variety of immoral women, put together a “blood buffet” made from organ meats from other immoral women, and then have Sheetar devour a virgin. As the bodies pile up, detectives Sheba Jackson (LaNette LaFrance) and Mark Shepard (Roger Dauer) investigate.
Based on that synopsis, would it surprise you to learn this movie has more topless women than an hour of Naked News? Sheetar’s new body must be pieced together from sleazy women, the kind that would participate in a naked cheerleading competition, or go back to someone’s place after speaking with them for less than 5 minutes at a bar. It isn’t enough that they chop up a whole group of women and stitch them together in a new beautiful body; they need more ladies of ill repute to fillet and feed to the unsuspecting guests who will attend the resurrection ritual. The buffet recipes only calls for a few choice bits so the rest of the evidence must be disposed of by sneaking it into the regular menu items at the Tutman restaurant. Good thing the customers are so busy stuffing their faces they don’t notice the disappearing patrons or the multiple instances of the boys walking into the dining area covered in blood, hands full of dripping intestines!
You can tell everyone involved in Blood Diner was having a good time. The actors are having conversations with a brain in a jar, wounds that would be fatal and horrific are made ridiculous and laugh-out-loud funny. The special effects and gore are pretty good, but not so good that you’re disturbed by any of them and once in a while, the visuals are as cheesy as the rest of the plot - giving you another reason to laugh. There’s something delightful about the fact that these two numbskulls are picking up all of these hussies but also have to befriend a gentle virgin (Lisa Elaina) and get her to go on a “romantic date” that involves wrestling and culminates in this awesome ancient Lumerian dinner that she’ll "definitely love"!
As much fun as Blood Diner is, there are a few parts here and there that could’ve been ironed out. There are one too many references to Nazis, there's a death in Bronson Cave that feels a little too random and the ending - while delightfully weird - can’t make up its mind about what it wants to do with the music. There’s a band playing, but they keep getting interrupted by the movie’s soundtrack. Otherwise, Blood Diner is pretty great. There are many memorable scenes, gags, and characters. The one I’ll remember best has nudity in it (not for the reasons you think) but a runner-up has to do with a rival vegetarian restaurant owner who has an unfortunate encounter with the brothers - it doesn't go the way you think it will.
Blood Diner is the kind of movie I can’t give more than a 3.5/5 rating to, but could see myself re-watching again before some 5-star movies. It’s weird and quirky, distinct, unapologetic and consistently gruesome - in a funny way. (January 2, 2023)

My top favorite bands of all time are Type O’ Negative, Bullet For My Valentine, Otep, Manson, Rammstein, Motionless In White, Ice Nine Kills, Arch Enemy, Kittie, David Bowie, Motley Crue, Poison, Butcher Babies, Children Of Bodom, Apocalyptica, Raven Black, Straight Line Stitch, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Ghost. Metal, punk rock, nu metal, thrash metal are my favorite music genres. The Soska Twins, Eli Roth, and Mary Harron are my favorite directors. My top favorite movies are American Mary, American Psycho, American Satan, 10 Things I Hate About You, Girl Next Door, Strangeland, Mistress Of The Dark. The coolest celebs I’ve met are Twiggy Ramirez, Tobin Bell, Manson, Otep, MIW, Butcher Babies, Elvira, Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, and Felissa Rose. But of course, Victor and Smiler had to dress up too! So, once they'd completed their pumpkins -- both excellent quality, I'm proud to reveal -- I had them pick their costumes! Victor stayed with Alice's space-related theme and put on an astronaut suit, while Smiler ended up as a cheerleader as I wanted to see what the masculine form of the outfit looked like. Kinda -- dull, honestly. I was expecting something with brighter colors. *shrug* Ah well, at least I'm sure it was comfortable! They headed inside to noodle around on their instruments -- Victor working again on that damn song that's been in his inventory for AGES because songs take TOO LONG TO WRITE; Smiler just singing someone else's song on their guitar -- while Alice headed upstairs to nuzzle Kelly and give her some love --
AND THEN, A POSSESSED CHILD APPEARED. O.O Well, more specifically, a random kid came up on the porch (the game didn't label her a trick-or-treater, and she didn't have a costume, so I guess she was just a random visitor), knocked on the door -- then pulled out a digital sketchpad and started sketching. And I'm guessing that's an item that kids aren't actually supposed to use, as she promptly did that thing where the legs stretch out and the kid starts hovering because the game's trying to use the adult skeleton or something. *facepalm* Sims 4, why are you like this sometimes...
However, something else appeared on the porch as well, as the possessed child finished up her sketching and eventually wandered off -- a specter! I figured that you HAD to give specters a gift on Halloween and had Smiler offer it their latest batch of skin balm. The specter was NOT appreciative -- possibly because it doesn't have skin. Smiler's attempts to communicate didn't pan out either, and I had them head inside to instead do something else Spookfest-related --
Namely, watch a terrible horror movie about a killer bunny-man with a chainsaw. At least, I think that's the intended plot of Moonlight Massacre III in-game. XD It took me a bit to get everyone settled properly on the couch, and there was another interruption from a trick-or-treater midway through(which I didn't mind, as it allowed Smiler to give them some candy and tick the tradition on their list), but they did get through it, and they all seemed to enjoy it well enough. Victor and Alice then had some cake and went to bed while Smiler went to jam on their guitar (getting skill level 9 out of it, yay), all while the jack-o-lanterns burned merrily in the front yard and the fish swam merrily in their little tank. :) It seemed to be the perfect Spookfest...
And then Alice woke up shortly before the 2 AM cut-off time with her Fury RAGING, despite an earlier Somber Howl and the fact that it was a new moon. Once again, I figured it was easier to tip her over the edge than try to bring it down, and so she ended her Spookfest with another brief rampage, marking her territory and digging in the dirt. I mean, at least this time she didn't change uncontrollably under a full moon in the middle of a party full of Smiler's friends? :p Maybe Alice going on a little werewolf fury-fest is gonna be another Spookfest tradition around here...
Anyway -- next week, we have a brief break from the Chill Valicer Save so I can show off another one of my builds here! And then the week AFTER that, it's back to farm chores and store stuff! See you then!

Favourite movies is a little difficult because I usually separate movies into horror and non-horror in my brain (horror movies are my biggest interest, so I kinda need the distinction to not only talk about horror), but I'll try to fit not just horror stuff:
1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - fun fact I once wrote an essay about this movie bc I love it so much
2. Scream (1996)
3. Stardust (2007) - my biggest comfort film, it's so fun
4. But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
5. I can't choose between Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) or Saw (2004)
