Coeli's Picks: Men, part 3 (Dishonorable Mention)
Just in time for April Fool's Day, here are some truly eyebrow-raising and head-scratching costumes. I know neither of these shows had a huge budget, but that's no excuse.
Coeli's comments:
"If I had to look at them, so do you!"
Blake's 7 (s4e4, "Stardrive")
"Punk space pirates who totally fail to come across as menacing:"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doctor Who (s10 e5, "Carnival of Monsters") / Leslie Dwyer as Vorg (and Cheryl Hall as Shirna)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No seriously, why is his costume Fruit Loops?

Smiffina Episodes: Killer On The Run
Yesterday after a long and tiring day, Smithy lost his patience with a difficult customer called Ryan Jones who had been using cam girls and was stalking one after he felt they had started a relationship.
Comments Smithy made to him - after Ryan had been repeatedly digging away at him, with Sam on his back and Phil making his life doubly hard on a day when Custody was even busier than normal made Smithy say something that meant Ryan's wife found out he'd been using an internet sex site (As they get Smithy, Gina, Jack and Mickey to say about 100 times in this episode) To say she wasn't best pleased is an understatement. It turns out she'd been nagging him continuously, not listening over a long period of their marriage and digging away over various things and, already mentally ill, Ryan snapped and killed her after they'd been arguing for almost 12 hours since leaving the station.
Smithy is caught in a traffic jam and spots that a stalled car is causing it. He gets out to go help and finds Ryan in the driving seat who tells him that the car has run out of petrol. Smithy tells him what to do and says they'll push it to the side. As he gets to the boot to so so, he finds there's blood on it. He opens it after covering his hand with his sleeve and finds the body of Connie, Ryan's wife, bleeding heavily from head wounds. Spooked, Ryan runs off and disappears before he can be arrested. Smithy calls it in and arranges back up to cordon off the area.

Mickey and Smithy head to the Jones' house to see if they can find Ryan. The front door is wide open but Ryan is nowhere to be seen. The house is definitely where the murder happened however, and the weapon is a meat tenderiser. Roger and Diane find Jones and follow him into the underground but he manages to get away on a tube. They track him on the CCTV and see him aim a gun at a guard who opens the gates to let him through. "[...]He has a firearm, I repeat, he has a firearm." Smithy sighs as he runs to where he was last seen. "Yeah, heard you the first time." he mutters under his breath.

At the station, Smithy and Gina talk it through. Smithy is down on himself for Ryan managing to get away. "The best sorts of coppers are supposed to have sixth senses for this sort of stuff." Gina reminds him they're police not clairvoyants. Jack leads the briefing where they pool information with Smithy telling them that the Jones' did not seem like a happily married couple even before she found out about his use of porn chat sites. At the moment they're not going public to find Ryan. They're focusing on his only family, his mum, the cam girl Justine and any potential friends of which there are none.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ryan is close to his mum and keeps in touch with her on an almost daily basis and comes over twice a week. She hasn't seen him for a couple of days now but he is due to fix a tap. He's told his mum he's had a promotion but really he's been fired due to complaints. His manager admits he he had a strange manner, was very tense, short tempered and didn't fit in. Ryan's mum tells them he's kind and sweet and adored his wife. Smithy has to gently tell her that they discovered his wife's body in the boot of his car and that Ryan ran off.
Ryan is seen walking around London, clearly agitated. Background street noises are amplified, he almost gets crashed into by a bike and everywhere he looks he sees police officers which makes him even more twitchy. He's seen by an officer jumping on a bus.
Sun Hill collate what they have found out. Ryan is a loner who wants to fit in, a mummys boy, a fantasist and he sees a therapist and also bought a gun online. He avoids conflict and bottles things up until he explodes. His therapist describes him as a disaster waiting to happen. He feels it's Justine that he can really open up to and be himself. Mickey tells her that they never met and she says it makes sense. He projected the relationship he needed onto a fantasy figure. She thinks he'll continue to self destruct and potentially take revenge.

Smithy and Gina answer a shout for a man behaving aggressively in the area that Ryan was last seen in. They find him behaving oddly and talking to himself in the park and quietly and discreetly try to get the members of the public away from him and to safety. Gina gently reassures him that they just want to help him and a distressed Ryan seems to soften slightly. "Yes that's it... I don't understand what's happened, I don't get any of it." he confesses. Then he spots Smithy and reaches for the gun - Smithy tries to talk him down. Ryan shouts at him and holds the gun up at him, telling Smithy that he blames him for losing everything. "This isn't my fault! I loved Connie! It's your fault that she's dead!" Ryan manages to back them round enough to allow him to escape and in his panic he shoots two people - a woman and a man who drop to the floor. Smithy and Gina can't follow him because they have to help the people and so he manages to escape as Trojan aren't near enough to stop him.
Back at Sun Hill, in blood splattered uniforms, Gina tries to comfort Smithy and tells him it's not his fault. He obviously doesn't believe what she's saying. With the two injured victims - one stable, one critical, they now have to release the news to the press and warn people not to approach. Smithy tells the others that Ryan blames him but Gina tells him - and Jack and Heaton - that that's only what Ryan wants Smithy to think. Mickey tells them what the therapist said and that he might fixate on Smithy and go after him. "... Well my days just getting better." Smithy mutters.
Ryan turns up at his workplace and Smithy is grounded by Jack and forced to remain in the station. Gina reassures him it's not about him - not that he takes it in. "Sometimes our actions have consequences we could never predict. Look at my back catalogue of mistakes!" "... What do we do about it?" Smithy sighs. "We don't think about it, like tightrope walking. Look down and you're a dead man." Gina tells him gently. "Trick is to keep your head up and keep walking." ".... Maybe." he whispers, watching her walk off.
At his workplace, Mickey is told that he's already gone, he sat at his desk, did something on the computer and went. The manager tracks what he did and tells Mickey that he looked up a customers details. ... those details are Smithy's. Of course he is a customer of the company that he works for! He's armed, dangerous and heading for Smithy's flat! Mickey phones it in as a matter of urgency and then heads over with uniform and CO19. Gina says she'll tell him and Jack makes sure she impresses on Smithy that he has to remain station bound until Ryan Jones is caught. Does he listen?
Come off it... it's Smithy! He finds out from Mickey that Jones has not damaged anything in his flat (and it is a lovely place!) - other than a picture of an older woman from the mantlepiece - that picture is of his mum. He also gets Mickey to look for his address index box and he finds it open on the table at the address of his mum. Jones is heading over to take the ultimate revenge on Smithy. Gina tries to stop Smithy from going and he tells her he doesn't care. It's his mum he's after and she can sack him if she wants to but he's going to stop him. It's obvious there's no way Smithy will be stopped so Gina agrees - as long as she goes with him.

Pauline tries to calm Ryan down, telling him that it's just Smithy's job and he has to make difficult decisions every day. Ryan scoffs and tells her that Smithy has to know what it's like to lose someone close to him like he has because it's Smithy's fault. He claims he gave him the chance to apologise and Smithy didn't. Pauline gently says if he thought he was wrong he'd apologise and that he's a good boy - Ryan scoffs and tells her that she doesn't know him that well - just like his own mum doesn't know him like she thinks she does. Smithy tries ringing on the way to try get hold of her and leaves an answerphone message "Mum it's Dale, are you there? If you can hear me, pick up..." The answerphone disturbs them and he flees. Smithy comforts his mum and reassures her that he's ok, that Jones' rambling is that of a mentally ill person and that he hasn't done anything bad to him. He gets her to come back to the station - but as he's putting her in the car and Gina is ordering him to go back with her (Eeee, scene with his two mums! <3) , he spots Jones in the distance and legs it off after Jones with Gina shouting after him to come back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smithy follows him into a tube station again onto one of the platforms. He loses him and is about to radio it in as Ryan comes out from behind a pillar and points the gun at him. "Looking for me?" "Well come on then!" an angry Smithy shouts back. "This is what you wanted, isn't it?" and then "So what you going to do? Shoot me?" (... I wish they wouldn't do that, one day the answer will be yes!) Ryan tells him that it's not nice having people messing with your own family and that it's all Smithy's fault and Smithy ruined his life. Smithy tells him that it's *him* who's ruined his own life. He admits he made a mistake but he didn't make him murder Connie, he didn't make him shoot people or threaten his mum or anything that he's done.
Gina is horrified to hear Smithy has been seen on CCTV being held at gunpoint and orders the station be closed, people be evacuated and C019 be positioned. Smithy turns the conversation round on Ryan and asks him if he thinks shooting him will make him feel better. He admits that it might for a second or two - but then what? Did killing Connie make him feel better? Did he feel better after hitting her? Did he feel better after shooting those other people? He talks him round slowly, admitting that he himself is going to have to find out how to live with the fact that him losing his patience for a few seconds resulted in the death of Connie at Ryan's hands and two people being in hospital that he doesn't know if they'll live.
John asks Gina how he was when he went in there. Gina tells him that "Smithy was fine, absolutely fine, sir." she confirms, though her repetitive anxious jittery movements of her hands betray that that's not exactly the truth...
Tumblr media
Smithy tells him he screwed up and did something without thinking, like people do every day. Except this has larger consequences than the average persons. Ryan claims he gets to walk away with it but he repeats that it will haunt him for the rest of his life and he has to learn to deal with it. Ryan changes tact and points the gun at himself, and Smithy begs him to talk to him and tell him what happened. He asks him about Connie and what happened, Ryan tells him they argued from leaving the station and that everyone - his mum, Justine and the therapist - told him he should speak to Connie so he did. He told her everything about how he always just has to listen whilst she nagged him, how impotent he felt and how he never got a say in anything and that everyone thought he was OK but he really wasn't and wasn't coping. He adds that Connie wouldn't listen and didn't try and understand that he just needed someone to talk to. Smithy suggests she felt betrayed but that it doesn't mean that he didn't do the right thing in opening up to her. Ryan has a moment of clarity and realises that he killed his wife and starts to panic and cry. Smithy gently talks him down and tells Ryan that he will have to learn too to deal with what has happened and that he the pain and guilt will be there but it will ease and they know he's not well. He promises that they will help him and he (Ryan) knows he needs help too. CO19 appear, spooking Ryan but Smithy tells them not to shoot and that it's OK and he continues to talk to him. Slowly Ryan hands the gun over and CO19 move to arrest him whilst Smithy holds it in the air.
Gina and Jack watch with the others as Ryan is lead out with Smithy between him. Mickey and Jack congratulate him and Gina moves to lead him away. "Don't tell me, you never doubted..." Smithy drawls. "I never doubted!" Gina insists. She asks him if he's alright and he says "Yeah, like you said, head up and keep on walking." They exchange smiles, she takes his arm and they walk off towards the waiting car to return to the station.

I like to think that post-cheryl and the gang graduating, cheerleading ended up becoming like riverdale's stereotypical euphemism for lesbianism ya know like softball so by the time the river vixens get revived it's like
'i'm trying out for the cheerleading squad' 'oh huh didn't know you flipped that way' kinda stuff
and whilst it is important to me that it's not Because of cheryl in a Super Intentional way, more like part consequence of cheryl's HBIC energy magnifying her Big Gay Energy, coupled with a preexisting higher percentage of on the DL queerleaders already on the squad (I'm looking at you early seasons backwards snapback vixen and 1950's closeted couple who came out the second 50's cheryl did, betty and veronnica also count retroactively fite me) with just a dash of influence from choni's Epic Romance
it is equally important to me that toni and cheryl have been all but like Mythologized at riverdale high particularly to the queer students that follow
like c'mon A Blossom and A Southside Serpent ensured the rumor mill would always pay attention but then they went ahead and had their first kiss during a rescue from an illegal conversion therapy operation for the love of gaia, Absolute Legend behaviour
and its like even without the high stakes backdrop of gangs and cults and serial killers and lethal rpgs and atrcious parenting coloring their narrative
they are undeniably The riverdale high Power Couple, president blossom and first Lady topaz? never met a seat they couldn't share? officially the first sapphic prom queens in riverdale history?
Like the impact of all that and more doesn't get erased in 7-8 years and it's not at all outside the realm of possibilities that there are vixens on the team who have older siblings who were even in school at the same time as choni
which brings me to the main dumb reason this post exists which is i just desperately need a bunch of the vixens 2.0 to be queer and fucking here for the frenemy ex's Drama cheryl and toni are serving in 5.07
like it would be a travesty if there weren't a single Gay^TM to witness this absolute masterpiece of an interaction
from the record scratch music stop at cheryl's entrance (that ive just now decided was absolutely real and done by one of the cheerleader's gf's (who helps out with the tech side of stuff and is sitting on the bleachers recording practice for later analysis) armed with a radio remote control and the impeccable dramatic timing of a queer theatre kid) to toni's self-satisfied greeting from successfully pushing cheryl's buttons
'well,well,well'
'miss winchester herself'
'Another Surprise Visit'
Elton fucking John
'the bitch is back in town' self-referential 😘
'ThIs SqUaD iS mY BiRtHrIgHt'
'wrong' the divorced parents are fighting over the kiddddd
HUN
'so what are you going to do about That?'
the dual HBIC shirts (like Of Course cheryl has a red HBIC shirt in the practice uniform style but toni ALSO got a fucking maternity dress custom made like c'mon mfeo)
The intense eyefucking and insane crackling energy of 2 people who can be anything but indifferent to each other no matter how hard they try
Just All of The That above between them being seen through the eyes of gossipy little high school shits who find themselves actually kind of ridiculously invested in their front row seats for a new installment of the choni saga
