Distractions as I wait for places to open and get Alvin to the vet... Okay, so I have so many shitty parents and parental figures in my works, but I also have good ones! Also, many of my characters with shitty parents become pretty good ones! Actually, PB has tons of unnamed parents, even one kid's pretty nice absentee mom and dad, but Mark and Brooklyn (uncle on mom's side, aunt on dad's side) juggle taking care of him bc his prarents are too busy going to other planets to do "missionary work" aka MLM for bogus herbal remedies/exercise "cures" (they try to sell a lifestyle as a cure-all). But so many of my characters end up being fantastic parents. Some are spoilers tho ;) Also shout out to my characters who choose not to have kids for any number of reasons! I’m watching the Sag awards and it occurs to me that current day Alan Alda would make and excellent Chester Grady

Chester rocked on for several tense moments before looking around at them all in surprise. “What?” he asked. “Y’all didn’t know they was sweethearts?” Zane was so shocked he knew it had to show as he stared at the smile on Chester’s lined face.

“Night, Dad!” Earl shouted to Ty’s grandfather.

Chester gave him a modified salute, his gnarled fingers waving through the air before gripping his shovel again. It sat on his thighs as he rocked.

Harrison took a last couple sips of his coffee before standing. “I guess I’ll turn in too,” he said, and he waited only a few seconds before giving Zane a fierce hug. He added a kiss on the cheek that caused his mustache to tickle Zane’s ear, and then he did the same to Ty. “You boys . . . you boys come back, now. You hear?”

Zane’s smile was watery at best. He nodded obediently. Harrison patted him on the cheek, then gave Ty’s shoulder a squeeze before he disappeared into the house.

Ty and Zane were left on the porch with Chester, listening to the ranch go to sleep as the screen door snicked shut.

Ty’s gaze lingered on Zane. Zane knew what he was thinking without having to ask or even ponder too hard. This was their last moment of peace. The calm before the storm. The otherworldly silence before the fire.

“Oohrah, kiddo,” Chester said quietly.

Ty smiled and squeezed his eyes shut as tears trailed down his face. “Oohrah, Gunny.”

001  .  the  beginning .  holy  cross ,  1997 .  you  are  born  the  youngest  of  four  to  grady  and  paulette  abernathy .   their  only  son .  during  infancy ,  you  are  a  doll  for  your  older  sisters  to  play  with  —  home  is  living  room  dancing ,  and  kitchen  table  bills .  you  do not  have  a  lot ,  but  you  have  eachother  —  and  that  is  enough .  your  mother  is  the  most  beautiful  woman  in  the  world ,  and  your  father  is  even  cooler  than  superman :  he  is  your  best  friend ,  and  you  become  his .  he  takes  you  everywhere .  and  even  if  he  didn ‘ t ,  everyone  is  sure  that  you  would  follow .
