I am so, so glad we are getting new Discworld audiobooks because the ones I have listened to so far are *fantastic* (Aside: Alfred Enoch is making my teenage crush on both Pteppic and Chidder a Thing again)

But perhaps more importantly, these new versions are deeply necessary because I just saw a post with a Discworld reference and a solid wall of people who thought it was a Night Vale/Magnus Archives reference that they just didn't get.

Just started reading Pyramids and have come to the conclusion that Teppic and Chidder are in love

thoughts on Pyramids (the book)

So overall, I like it. I mean, it'd be kind of hard for me to dislike a dw book im pretty sure. but this was the first one that had sections that struck me as kind of actively boring.

but what stuck out to me was the scene with the sphinx which felt...more than a bit out of place. Like it was meant to be the culmination of a character arc that just wasn't set up. as though the scene was written before Teppic was really a fleshed out character. Fast talking or using screwball logic to bugs-bunny an enemy out of killing him is just not something he's ever really done before or shown a predilection to doing before.

To be honest it felt like the scene was written for Chidder, and then the rest of the story was written after and given to Teppic instead, but at that point it didn't make sense anymore. Teppic's whole deal is he's generally very straightforward and genuine, and it's the people around him that are using circular logic to justify irrational behavior. I suppose you could make a case that him turning it around on someone else is meant to be the growth, but that seems contrary to the rest of his growth? Actually, his character growth is a little all over the place, admittedly.

But I still love him though.

The sphinx scene was still funny, but considering how little it had to do with literally ANYTHING else, and how easily it could be removed from the story without changing much (at least i assume, admittedly I have a little bit left to go so i may be wrong there), it definitely felt like that scene existed first, and the rest of the book came about as part of a setup for that scene to happen in.

just finished Pyramids! and i’ve got to say, even though there was no Rincewind and barely any Death, it’s my favourite book so far. it was just so fun and well written! absolutely loved it.
