What color palette(s) do you use for thrawn/chiss
I can never seem to get the right shades.
And yours are always so spot on and amazing!
*claps with glee* color picking for chiss? you mean my favorite subject to ramble about ever? don't mind if i do 🔴〰🔴
this will be primarily for chiss skin. for anyone who wants to know how i do chiss eyes and haven't seen the tutorial i made, here it is
so for thrawn, i go the self-indulgent route and pick the brightest, most saturated cerulean blue as my base color:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then, before i add any shadows or highlights, i add the blush to his nose and cheeks/general middle third of the face. even if you're not trying to make your chiss look like they're blushing, it's good for adding some life/variation to the skintone
my chiss blush is, naturally, purple
Tumblr media Tumblr media
your blush should be slightly darker than your base color. seeing as this saturated purple is naturally darker than the base blue i picked, i don't need to worry about manually picking a deeper shade, but in a lot of other color palettes, i would.
then for shadows, i shift the hue a little towards the royal blues with each darker shade, while maintaining max saturation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is key if you want your chiss to be So Blue It Burns Your Eyes
for highlights, i like to shift my hue in the other direction, towards cyan, but after a certain point it doesn't matter as much as it does with base color and shadows.
for darker thrawn paintings, i will pick a darker base blue, but every other principle remains the same
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and finally, if your chiss is not turning out blue enough (i've been there, despite my best efforts), try slapping an overlay layer with a midtone blue-grey on top. play around with the exact shade and the layer opacity based on what you're looking for and your chiss should become Even Bluer
i did it with my lesser evil fan poster
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(and also in the very first example, from the thrawn and nuso esva painting)
now for other chiss, i like to add some variety in skin color, which does make my approach to color picking a little different. for example with ar'alani, i tend to choose a lighter blue
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then when it comes to shadows, i do pick more saturated shades as i go darker, as well as shifting the hue the same way as i do for thrawn
Tumblr media
when it comes to blush, i pick a darker and more saturated purple. for characters whose base skintone is more cyan, i go for a more indigo color, and for characters whose skintone is more in the deep blue/royal blue category, the blush color is more purple
Tumblr media
in this case, even if bomarmo's skintone is light, its hue is still less cyan than borika's, therefore his blush is more purple than hers
for darker or more grey skintones (like i do for samakro and my oc vuarum respectively) my principle is still the same, except the less saturated the base color, the less saturated the shadows are going to be. (even though we're still going slightly to the right and shifting the hue. i even do this when i'm painting evereni or other grey skintones)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there is a stopping point to the hue shifting though. i stop shifting the hue for my darker shadows once it reaches that cusp between indigo and purple. i generally don't put purple shadows on my chiss unless the lighting specifically calls for it
then for chiss hair, there's a lot less nuance to my process
Tumblr media
the white circle is where i like to start if i'm doing a low committment sketch or very bright painting, but if i'm doing a darker painting i'll usually just start with black and every other shade is sort of a highlight after that.
generally you can go more saturated but i find the less saturated color selection creates a very nice contrast between the Very Blue skin and more muted blue-black hair. i do occasionally like picking more saturated base colors for some chiss though
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in general i like to treat chiss hair colors similar to humans except if their undertones were blue instead of yellow and their version of "ginger" was purple.
finally, just a disclaimer: don't color pick from any of these. they're not going to be accurate to the colors i picked on my art programs. between screenshots and file compression, the colors are Slightly Off. that's also why i didn't just drop a bunch of color swatches and skedaddle. it's much more fruitful to learn how to pick your colors :3
thanks for reading! if you have any more questions, feel free to reply or send me an ask! i love talking about this stuff 💙

Tips For Painting Chiss Eyes and Scars
I said I'd do this, so here I am. It's not as long a post as the skin tutorial (link here), but it is long, so I'll shove it under a 'read more' button.
There's a poster at the end with text and pictures for easy reference later. It's pretty rough looking but it gets the job done.
Content warning for scars. That section is directly below the eye section and starts with the example image.
Chiss Eyes:
Tumblr media
- Eyelids are thin and will have the most red glow showing through. - Eyelashes will most likely reflect some of that red light. - If you're going for a colour absorption accurate/legends accurate look for the eyes, wherever the red light hits will be black/dark blue (I'd go dark dark blue just to avoid flattening the shadow but do what you like tbh) because blue absorbs red light. Though because their blood is red, I do think that there would still be a bit of a faint glow on the eyelids. Just not necessarily on the inside of the nose's bridge. That bit would probably be quite a bit darker because the eyeglow isn't actually passing through the skin there, it's just hitting it. - If you want to make a Chiss' line of sight subtly obvious, concentrating glow where you want the iris to be (see above picture) works quite well. If your art style has a focus more on lines than this example, picking a colour slightly brighter than the glow you're using also works well.
Chiss Scars:
Tumblr media
- Same as painting/drawing human scars, just blue. - New scar tissue is shiny, older scar tissue can still be shiny, just not as shiny. - Look at scar references and try and translate that to Chiss colours. - Scars can be lumpy and bumpy as well, so keep that in mind when adding lighting if you want the scar to stand out or not. - I usually use light blue for old but not too old scars, then darken as wanted. - For anything more complex than a slash scar, like blaster wounds etc, I would look at references for those on a human and translate to a Chiss colour palette.
The examples I've given are (from right to left): - Fresh wound - New scar tissue - Older scar tissue - Old scar - Stretch marks. - Small/not as deep
Poster/reference for later
(It's pretty much this whole post in image form).

Hope this is helpful :3

Speak like a Chiss?
No wonder there are no Cheunh tutorials on youtube, Chiss' vocal apparatus is different to Human's. Despite the Chiss' reputation for being cryptids, they have studied Humans comprehensively.

A speedpaint with text comments of my quick sketch coloring process! I know a lot of digital artists already know this method of color and shading, but it’s something I took a while to figure out, so maybe it’ll help somebody else out there too. For this piece:

If you’d like to see actual tutorials, leave a comment or an ask or something and I’ll see if it’s a thing people want!

so a couple semesters ago when i was taking pharma i would sometimes draw my notes with chiss, as if they were cedf educational tutorials sent out to the fleet feat. various characters (a silly idea but...brainrot brain apply hyperfixations to everything, OK??). i threw some basic colors on this old sketch in order to remind myself to do this properly again in 4 weeks when i get to start pathophysiology. :)

Random Chiss triangle thought because I like making myself sad (please add your thoughts I’d love to hear your take):
Reader is far enough along in her pregnancy (7 months maybe? Idk) that she has her baby bump, glowing, the cute stuff but it also means baby is getting heavy, she’s tired, normal symptoms. Thrawn is stuck on a mission longer than originally promised so reader decides to work more on the nursery to distract herself.
Thrass is there to keep her company, make sure she’s taken care of while his brother is off working. He moves the furniture for her as many times as she wants, helps reorganize the shelves, etc when she decides the room needs something else for the baby. Thanks to HoloNet YouTube she found painting tutorials and tells him she’s going to paint a mural for the baby.
He watches her paint the main wall that the crib will be against. He watches with curiosity and awe at every stroke as she paints the beautiful scene (I picture an evening or night sky because of the pretty blues and purples and white stars and Thrawn works amongst the stars, but a nature scene would be cool too), admiring how dedicated she is, paint smeared on her shirt, forehead, arms etc because painting is messy.
How his heart beats a little faster every time she turns to look at him and smiles shyly, asking what he thinks so far, should she try again, etc. Of course he tells her how perfect it is, how much the baby will love it, all good things.
She turns back to her work, determination on her face as his heart breaks at the thought of wanting to be able to kiss her paint-stained cheek, of wanting to hold her as they admire her art together, or wanting to be there when they put the baby to sleep in the future, etc.
But for now he can only be the supportive friend when she paints, offering her pillows to rest of when she needs breaks, brining her food during day two, three, however many it takes to finish painting or organising the nursery for the child he wishes so desperately was his... -LilSimp
Oooooooooo and when he’s talking about your work, and giving it compliments as you go... he sees it as some way to tell you how he feels, just... replacing “you” with your work.
I love it I love you
It’s beautiful You’re beautiful
It’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen You’re the most incredible person I’ve ever known.
He rests easy knowing that he’s both told you and hasn’t. He keeps the compliments vague, as those are easier to translate in his mind. You take them gratefully, believing the lack of specificity is due to how little he knows about art. Maybe. Maybe not.
Sometimes, though, it isn’t enough. Especially as you near the end of the project. Your work tells a story, it always does. He notices the little things, the ones that some might not see as important, especially for the big picture. But he sees it all. And he wants to know these stories, to know the thoughts in your head as you had created your work. He wants to hear it from you, from your voice. He wants you to tell him every story and every idea you have. He wants to know the tales your child will grow up with, the words that will be a part of them from the very first day. But he can’t. And he can’t read art the way Thrawn can. The best he can do is guess, and hope maybe, you’ll choose to tell him one day.

Custom Eli Vanto Funko Pop Tutorial
Since we all want one, and Disney has not released any official Eli Vanto Merchandise, here’s a little how-to on making your own bobble head Eli Vanto Funko figure!
Tumblr media
It’s a bit of a long post, so I’ll add a cut here! If you are interested, read on! Also, I’ve never been able to track down how to make a non-bobble head funko bobble so I go into great detail on that process!
You will need:
-A Jim (Trollhunters) and Grand Moff Tarkin Funko Pop figure. However, if you want to cut your price in half, a young Han Solo and First Order Disguise Finn could be a cheaper alternative to create a Chiss Ascendancy Uniform Eli Vanto.
-Paint (I used Turner Acryl Gouache as it dries matte similar to my other Pop figures, but acrylic paints could work fine too, just will dry with a sheen) To make Eli’s skin tone I mixed burnt sienna with a very small amount of cobalt blue and some white.
-Super glue. Personally I had great luck with gorilla super glue gel
-An Exacto knife or similar sharp blade if you want to make your Eli’s head bobble like all other SW Pop! Figures. If you are using 2 bobble heads, you won’t need this, but Jim’s head is not a bobble head so we will need to cut and transplant some of Tarkin’s parts for that.
-A way to boil water and a container deep enough to submerge a figure in hot water.
Let’s get started! Here are the two boys I procured. Jim comes with a cute little gnome, feel free to test your paints on him, that’s what I did. He now has a brown hat! In total, they cost about $35, both are kind of special and priced higher than the normal $8 funko price point which is kind of lame but hey, the things we do for Eli! He’s worth it.
Tumblr media
Step one: Disassembly
Tarkin and other bobble heads are very easy to disassemble. You will notice that at the top and bottom of the spring there is a little round tab. Hold the figure firmly and press on that tab and the spring will screw off. You can thus transfer heads very easily between bobble heads. If you have Han and Finn, congrats you are just about finished!
Taking apart standard figures like Jim is a little harder, and the easiest way to do it is to soften the vinyl with a little steam bath. Here is Jim enjoying his dip in a hot tub for 5 minutes. The hot water will not hurt your figure at all, once you paint your figure you cannot heat it again as the paint will crack and peel off.
Tumblr media
After soaking the head pops right off in two parts, the main head and then a ‘neck plug’ that might be a bit harder to wrestle out of there, take your time and soak him again if he gets hard on you, its worth it going slow to not tear the vinyl.
If you do not want Eli’s head to bobble you can very easily attach this to Tarkin’s neck and call it a day, don’t worry about removing the neck plug. But if you do want him to bobble (which IMO was very worth it) it is time to break that exacto knife out!
Step two: Slice and Dice
You will notice that Jim has a very small neck hole compared to Tarkin, so the spring will not go in. To fix this, soak him again in hot water to soften him and cut long the edge of the insert where the neck plug was attached. Make sure to not leave any potentially dangerous super sharp edges. Once cut out, Jim’s neck will look like this:
Tumblr media
Now it’s Tarkin’s turn for a bath. Pop his head into the hot water for 5 minutes. You will notice that in his head is a grey cork looking nub that the spring was threaded onto. Unfortunately it is permanently attached to his head so we have to cut it out. I found this to be a 2-man operation, my partner using his thumbs to squish Tarkin’s head and shove the grey cork out (Don’t worry about deforming the head shape, put it in hot water and it’ll pop back to its natural shape). Using an exacto knife I carefully cut it out close to the base, it took about 3 cuts. Try and make it straight but it does not need to be a perfectly even cut as the already flat ‘bottom’ side is what we will use in the next steps.
Tumblr media
Step three: Reassembly
Threading the grey cork piece back onto the spring ‘upside down’ with the flat side up, only thread it about twice and then re-thread the spring onto Tarkin’s body. Using Jim’s head, test it on the assembly until you are happy with how high his head is above the body. To adjust the height, adjust how threaded the neck and cork are. Pictured below is where I ended up finding my ideal height on the grey cork .
Tumblr media
Once you are happy with the height, put a small drop of glue on the cork and press it into Jim’s head. This can be tricky to find the right spot as the inside of his head is not entirely smooth. Mine looks up a little bit due to this and the weight of his hair, but I think it just gives him character!
Step four: Painting and Customization
As I said, I used Turner Acryl Gouache paints. Ended up also painting Tarkin’s head into Thrawn just for fun as well! Remember to also paint the neck and hands of the figure (and remove the spring for painting the neck!). When painting Eli, I found it very useful to use small bits of blue painter’s tape to cover his eyes and eyebrows to keep paint off of it. Be patient and it will turn out well I promise! Watering down the paint a bit also helped keep the texture as smooth as it could be. Of course, we also had to customize Eli’s box as well by cutting all the Jim heads off and printing out new labels! You can see it in the first picture at the top of this post.
Here is the finished product!
Tumblr media
This was a super fun project and I hope this tutorial is helpful!
If such a project is daunting for you, I am opening some commission slots to make some for just the price of materials and shipping unpainted or with a small fee for painting him (in total that step took the longest). Please DM me for information on these commission slots, the price will depend on which figures you want to incorporate and the amount of customization required!
