i don't think people realise just how funny chit sang as a character is. he's just some dude. a random dude who somehow busts out of the hardest to escape to prison and ends up camping with the avatar for a night. can you imagine going drinking with your buddies after that?? "oh yeah did u hear the avatar defeated the firelord" "yep. i met him after his friend accidentally busted me out of prison"

a firm rebuttal against dadko
It's a few days into the new arrivals, after the Boiling Rock.
It's hard, getting used to it. Zuko is still getting used to a lot of things; getting used to trust, getting used to softness, and feeling that he is standing where it feels right. He is not standing right now, though; he is sitting on a bench, looking out over one of the temple facades that is opened towards the cliffside. Here the living breath of the world moves around you, and when you breath in, you can imagine you breath with ten thousand years of history moving through you.
There are many things to get used to. Vaguely he looks around to see if Katara is there, with narrowed eyes and in a stance ready to attack. She makes little secret of it; at any moment, should he seem a threat, she will kill him, and she is always poised to strike.
He doesn't speak of it to the others that he actually finds it comforting. Part of his world is little sisters ready to kill him, and he has been permanently on the defensive since he was old enough to realize that he and Azula have been competitors from birth; its normal to him. But he has never entirely known Azula's mind. One moment, she may be offering him help and advice, and he thinks she is entirely genuine. The next, she is taunting him that father is going to kill him, or smiling with undisguised glee at him being publically mutilated.
The point was that he never knew which way she would go, but Katara is openly murderous, and she is constantly attacking speaking nothing but spite and barely disguised venom at him. Her words are an attack, and while someone else might think her taking every opportunity to snipe and threaten and insult him would hurt, it doesn't. She is, at least, honest.
(Some part of him looks at her and Sokka, at the scars they carry, at the scars inherited from generations of fear and suffering and loss, and that the wider world carries those same scars. It tells him: "You don't deserve to be happy after everything your family has done." It's hard for him to argue otherwise. The Avatar overheard Zuko saying something about it once, and went into a long and angrily patient statement that no one deserves anything and no one gets anything, what happens is what happens. Sometimes Zuko thinks that he wants himself to suffer, because the idea that there's no greater agenda behind it bothers him.)
Chit Sang sidles up. Zuko watches him carefully. He still isn't sure what Chit Sang's motivation is, why someone from the Fire Nation didn't even blink to be among the company of the Avatar. Was he a dissenter? He doesn't know.
For the last few days, Chit Sang has been carefully watching them too. Studying their group, figuring out where he's supposed to fit in. He's been watching Zuko in particular, seeing how HE fits into the group.
As it so happens, he makes the wrong conclusion. Chit Sang sticks out a thick finger and says, "So, you're like the dad. Yeah?"
Zuko's head twitches, hawk-like. "Excuse me?"
"This whole... thing you've got going on with the Avatar and the others. You're the one driving 'em onwards. You're taking a dad kind of role with them, right?"
Zuko is blank, and it takes him a moment to process this, another to think of what to say, and one more to figure out what he actually wants to say and how to say it.
It wounds.
He thinks of fathers. The first thought hurts. There's little room for him to really understand the concept except in a vague way. His own experience is bright hot pain; it is yearning for notice and acknowledgement, and being treated as a piece of furniture when he was not outright being hurt.
It's easier to think of uncles instead; it is only later that he realizes that Iroh is his model for fatherhood, a measuring stick of sorts to emulate. As he grows older and wiser, he tries to be more like Iroh; calm and patient, serene and withholding the impulsive feelings that just hurt people.
Even now, before he realizes it, he thinks that sounds much more like Aang. He is no Iroh; he wants to be like him, but he is not him. He's more like his own father than he wants to admit, and hating the truth does not mean the truth does not exist. The same impulses and feelings that are probably second nature to his father are the same for him; the drive towards action, a disinterest in careful thought, lashing out at anything that does not immediately make sense or seems like a threat...
Chit Sang's question makes something in him churn and writhe. It will be years before the idea that Iroh is more of a father to him has truly settled; he has said as much, but there is a difference between saying something you know to be true, and genuinely accepting it in your bones. Discomfort and anxiety squirm inside him now.
His fingers clench, his wrist twists. The associations are all about pain right now; hurt and ache swirl in his head.
And above it all, it just feels strange. Like a father to the others, or adopting that kind of role? It doesn't make any sense.
He thinks of Aang; wise and serene just as much as he is childish, and its not different aspects of a person but whole and unconnected. He is not childish, Zuko chides himself; he lacks the shame Zuko feels in being truly honest, and is free from embarrassment. Zuko (and Ozai, he knows) lashes out when he feels upset or mortified; Aang does not, and that is because he is wise in a way Zuko doesn't understand.
(It is another cognitive understanding he needs time to really internalize, especially when his assumptions conflict with what he knows to be true, deep down. Later, he will accuse Aang of being naive. He has been wrong many times before, and that will be just another example.)
He thinks of Sokka and Toph, Katara and Aang, the others who have traveled with them. He does not think 'people to take care of'; he thinks of peers. Children like him, as wounded and aching as the world itself.
Calling him a dad figure to them? Ridiculous. Absurd. He thinks again of the Avatar, of gray eyes that look older than the world, and seeing the gaze of something so ancient that the chill of ages radiates from him.
Zuko clenches his teeth. "I'm a kid. They're kids, just like me. I am not in charge."
Chit Sang follows his gaze. The Avatar stands at the edge of the cliff; he is still and calm, the wind blowing his saffron robes. A measure in contrasts, perhaps. But he also looks that at any moment he might topple over.
He does not look afraid. Fear, Zuko comes to understand, is something that ties you to the world and keeps you from flight. To fly, you might let go of the fears that tie you.
Chit Sang is silent for a moment, contemplative.
"Ah," he says, and then no more. It is enough.

Do you have any atla in the shera headcanons (preferably Azutara related but go wild)
Hi, Anon! Thanks for the ask!! I’ll try to answer as best I can. Also I do have a lot of She Ra AU incorrect quotes that are mostly centered around Azutara just so you know.
My primary headcanon would be that Azula is Catra and Katara is Adora. Then everything else is kinda centered around that.
- Katara grew up in the Fire Nation because they stole her from the South Pole. She and Azula get along well from the get go.
- Katara leaves when she finds out the Avatar is back and her brother is with him which breaks Azula’s heart.
- Sokka, Katara and Aang travel but this time with Azula (who of course gets Mai and Ty Lee’s help) and Zuko chasing them. Mai seems like an Entrapta to me, Ty Lee would be Scorpia and Zuko would be Hordak.
- The Crossroads of Destiny is the Portal. Azula makes one final attempt to get Katara back but when she kills Aang, Katara gives her the ‘you’re dead to me’ look.
- It isn’t till the Boiling Rock, when Azula saves Zuko, Sokka, Hakoda, Suki and Chit Sang that she tells Zuko to apologize to Katara for her because she gets captured.
- Of course, Katara wants to go back for her which leads her and Zuko to going to the Capital instead of the Southern Raiders. I don’t think there would be really much mind control but there can be. Azula joins the Gaang.
- Azula and Katara go to the Capital in the finale battle where Azula confesses after Katara is hit dead center by a fireball.

Title: Wash These Stones
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Characters: Chit Sang, Izumi, Original Female Character
Tags: Chit Sang & Izumi, Chit Sang/Original Female Character, Post-canon, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Fire Nation 41st Division, Massacre of the 41st Division, Angst, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Father-Daughter Relationship, Not Beta Read
Summary:
[Five thousand two hundred and eighty seven names. Five thousand two hundred and eighty seven lives, gone because of what?
Patriotism? Honor? The Great March? He snorts, shakes his head - lies, all of that. They died - his daughter died - because of the same things that had been killing men for as long as he’d lived, as long as men had lived. Greed, and lies. Nothing more. Greed…and lies.
(There’s nothing about that, here, though. It’s nowhere to be seen, and maybe, he thinks, maybe that’s for the best.
Maybe it’s better that way, that they don’t say anything about what they were doing. That the rocks just say name and age and…a little something.
Maybe that’s all the world needs.)] ------ Once, the 41st Division marched to its death. Once, a prince tried to stop it. Once, Chit Sang had a daughter who never came home.
No matter what the world tries, nothing can ever erase their names from the world.
------
Sequel to to that loyal heart you're forever sixteen.
