What Remains of Chocoblook

As promised, here is a summary of what would’ve been the rest of Chocoblook! I had some pretty wild stuff planned, not all of which got its chance to be fully set up, so feel free to ask followup questions! I’ll try to answer as many as I can!

Hotland begins with Frisk walking into Alphys's lab and immediately falling face-first on the floor as Choco depossesses them. Frisk lies there fully unconscious, Choco lies there groaning and generally complaining about how inconvenient their life is until Alphys shows up. Understandably alarmed by finding an unconscious human in her home, she spirits them upstairs where Frisk can rest until they wake up.

When Choco explains that they had possessed Frisk, Alphys is surprised, because it should not be possible for a Ghost to enter a body that already contains a soul. Choco wonders why she knows this, considering she is not a ghost herself. Alphys gets flustered, explains that she's done a bunch of research into souls.

There are other topics that I intended to hit during this conversation too. Choco wonders if they can eat chocolate by possessing Frisk, and Frisk says that they are deathly allergic and not at all willing to die for this asshole ghost's cravings. Also, Frisk needs glasses, which Choco is shocked by— Frisk asks how they didn't notice that they're squinting all the time, and Choco says they just figured Frisk didn't have eyes.

Conversation continues in the background, but Choco notices something. A purple ghost pokes their head up through the floor, asking Alphys what the delay is, but makes eye contact with Choco instead. A beat passes, and the ghost retreats back into the floor. Choco informs Alphys that her lab is haunted, Alphys takes a second to process this before swearing and hurrying away.

The rest of Hotland isn't quite so well-defined, beyond that it generally follows the track of canon. Choco gradually pieces together the mystery of who that ghost was and what's up with Mettaton (spoiler: they're the same person) but I didn't have more than a few scattered scene ideas relating to that.

Frisk would have doubled back at some point to go hang out with Undyne. I have it in my notes that Choco would have left them to it, instead going and investigating Mettaton's old house, but now that I think about it with how much of a fan of Undyne I've established them to be they'd need one hell of a justification not to join the hangout. Which I don't have. /shrug

It has a payoff in the Mettaton EX fight, though, when Choco finally pieces together Mettaton's identity and responds by throwing his house key at him and telling him to talk to his cousin.

(Also, when faced with the colored tile maze, Frisk resets many times in rapid succession out of sheer determination to beat this puzzle within the time limit. They succeed, at the cost of disorienting the other people who are aware of Resets.)

In New Home, Choco is the one who tells Chara and Asriel's story. They don't have a clue how they know it, but somehow seeing this place and the things in it starts to jog their memory a little. Their certainty in who and what they are is shaky and they're very stressed out by the inevitability of needing to destroy Asgore to escape, and when they and Frisk find the coffin labeled as "Chara" they vanish into thin air, leaving Frisk to confront Asgore alone.

The Asgore fight happens. I'm not sure of the details. I suppose it's a reprise/reversal of the Toriel fight, refusing to fight until it becomes clear there's no other way through, but that's kinda just how it is in canon already. Regardless, without a ghost tagging along, things go pretty straightforwardly up until Flowey takes the souls.

We get a flashback to Frisk's backstory. Put plainly, they were a weird autistic kid who refused to talk and spends all their time playing around with puzzles instead of making friends. Nobody liked them, they were bullied and generally mistreated by their parents and teachers, and it's no wonder why they decided to run away to Mt. Ebott.

When Frisk fell onto Chara's grave, they didn't technically survive the fall. Their soul shattered, but the fragments of Chara's soul that had clung to their body reacted to the similar soul color and latched on, simultaneously gluing Frisk's soul back together and absorbing some of its strength to finish the process of turning into a Ghost several years earlier than they would have otherwise.

Following this, Frisk wakes up in an endless field of golden flowers blanketed in darkness. They stand, look around, then start tentatively wandering until they come across Flowey, standing tall among the other blossoms and facing away. Slowly, he turns to look at them, his face blank, and then the flowers wilt and his TV face lights up in the dark sky… or something. IDK, I have a lot of cool ideas for how the Flowey fight could be portrayed, and it's a shame I never got that far.

Regardless, the most I can say plot-wise is that it happens. At the end, he and Frisk are deposited just outside the barrier. They have a talk, wherein Flowey tells Frisk to go back and talk to Alphys. Meanwhile, Choco spent this whole time trying to think of some solution to the Asgore problem, unaware of the Flowey fight. They come to a solution, and rush to go tell Frisk about it, finding Frisk and Flowey together on the other side of the barrier.

For a moment, all is silent, and then Flowey winks and tells Frisk to think about what he said, just before burrowing away once more. Choco tries to tell Frisk about their idea, but Frisk can't hear them through the barrier. Frisk reloads their last save.

Frisk turns back from the Asgore fight. On their way out of the throne room, they are met by Choco, who explains that they had an idea, if Choco can possess Frisk then maybe that might make their combined souls strong enough to get Frisk through, and then Choco can return Frisk to the surface before returning to the Underground themself, and wait hold on Frisk where are you going???

Frisk is going to talk to Alphys, like Flowey suggested. I have no particular thoughts on how the Alphys date stuff goes. Fill in the blanks, I suppose.

The True Lab, however, is very juicy. Choco is generally creeped the hell out by all this, despite being a creepy little ghost themself. We're here for the tapes, though. The first one with Asgore and Toriel isn't much, Choco just sticks their tongue out at the gross gooey lovey dovey nonsense and tells Frisk to ignore these weird blank videos. Frisk ignores them, sticks the next one in, and Choco instantly flashes back to what it recorded.

So ensues a comic adaptation of the tape scenes, you know how it goes. After the first one, Choco is dazed as they return to the present, and Frisk is briefly concerned before Choco demands they put the next one in. By the time they reach the end, Choco/Chara is undergoing a full-on existential crisis as they realize they were, in fact, this particular Human.

The rest of the Lab follows with them in this state. Once again, there's a big ol' block of ??? all the way up to the Asriel fight. Choco is absorbed alongside the rest of the Monsters. *gestures vaguely* the Asriel fight happens. I'm pretty sure I had some cool shit in mind but if I ever wrote it down I cannot find it. I imagine it involves the emotional climax of Asriel's arc where he realizes that was Chara the whole time, and he's been an ass to them this whole time. I dunno.

So the barrier is broken and everyone is all happy and together. Chara gets an emotional but also kinda confused reunion with their parents. Meanwhile Frisk slips out and goes for a walk. They go aaaallllllllll the way back to the Ruins, where they find and talk to Asriel. They talk about Chara, and about how Asriel is gonna fade away and it's better if Chara doesn't have to see him like this before the end. Frisk nods along, politely walks away when Asriel tells them to, and then as soon as they're out of sight they break into a sprint.

Back to the congregation by where the barrier used to be. Misc. conversation is happening, Frisk bursts in wildly out of breath. They tell Chara to go talk to their brother back where Frisk fell down. Chara goes. The others are confused about what that was about, Frisk waves them off and focuses instead on catching their breath.

Chara reaches Asriel in time to have a much-needed conversation. I'd love to tell you about that conversation, but the deep-set flaw that made drawing this comic on a regular basis difficult and ultimately resulted in its cancellation is that a lot of my long-term notes are more or less just "some dramatic emotional stuff happens" without much elaboration into why this conflict is happening between these characters. There are reasons, tons of them, but figuring everything out in advance never quite managed to happen beyond the urgency of scribbling down the next page.

That being said, some dramatic emotional stuff happens, leading to Chara accidentally possessing Asriel.

They're confused for a bit, then figure out that it's possible because Asriel doesn't have a soul to get in the way. Alright, good to know, but talking over each other in the same body is weird so they're gonna unpossess Asriel now.

Chara fails to unpossess Asriel.

Being a ghost, they are of course capable of fusing with a body given intense enough emotions. Arguing with their dead and also dying brother was enough to do that, so now Chara and Asriel are stuck together in a fun goat body. After freaking out over this, Chara comes to an incredibly important realization. Asriel is not allergic to chocolate, and there is a bar in Toriel's fridge.

Asriel is judgmental about Chara's priorities. Chara says shut up, they've been through a lot, let them enjoy their chocolate.

They return to the remains of the barrier, and there is Another tearful reunion scene. Then, finally, they head to the surface. Everyone stands around admiring the sunrise for a bit, and then Frisk slips away. Chara/Asriel notice and follow, and Frisk leads them all the way back to the hole where they fell in. They bend down and pick up their glasses, which they'd dropped way back when, and put them on. This results in an immediate, drastic increase in the level of detail in the backgrounds.

In theory, I also had some manner of one-year-later epilogue planned? But once again, if I ever had clear plans for that, I didn't write them down. So that's the end of my plans for Chocoblook!

I also had plans for a side-story of sorts that would clarify the Ghost Lore. It would've shown Napstablook back when they were a human, long before the human/monster war happened. I may go into more detail on that another time, but the most relevant part is that Ghosts are what happens when a Human/Monster soul fusion dies. The Human soul breaks, and the remaining shards gradually reassemble into a weaker soul resembling that of the monster they were merged with.

However, this is such an infrequent occurrence, and there's such a long gap between the human's death and the appearance of a ghost, that the only person alive who knows why this happens is the Mad Dummy, who is really old it turns out. Like just so super old.

Fms does sprites for cool peeps: part 2 First one’s chara belongs to @ask-robot-chara, a blog which i’ve been following for a while, and that inspired me to make my own robot chara blog. Second one you may already know of, they’re the @chocoblook-comic‘s Frisk and Choco duo! I’ve started reading it recently, and its gotten out of its hiatus, so :D
