‘I'm really confused as to why so many outfits worn by Dee and Maia in "Getaway Girls" had to be the same style in different colors. Was it meant to be a commentary on the struggle of finding flattering clothes while occupying larger bodies and I just missed it? From their main dress to their swimsuits to their final white outfits, it feels weird that the first two curvy playable characters are the ones who have a matching wardrobe during most of the book when PB can very easily design different outfits. They did it during Maia's test to win over Calliope, so why not throughout the rest of the book? Dee's a high-profile lawyer. She could've easily paid for a different type of outfit for both of them. And Anita is a celebrity model. She definitely could've spent a couple extra dollars to give the girls two unique swimsuits. Did I miss something?’

Getaway Girls and Rules of Engagement (and Bachelorette Party but that’s not the focus of this post) are very similar at their core. They’re vacation stories focused very heavily on themes of familial bonds and blossoming romances.
However.
Getaway Girls handles both themes much better than Rules of Engagement.
To start, both stories are set into motion by an unfortunate event. Rules of Engagement’s story is set off by the MC’s Nana’s death, and Getaway Girls is set off by the MC’s fiancé(e)’s affair being discovered on the wedding day.
Neither MC is in a great place when the story begins (especially since RoE MC’s ex-fiancé ALSO cheated on her). However, the GG MC is understandably an absolute mess while the RoE MC is just…kinda sad, but generally apathetic in the grand scheme of things.
Then it comes out that there’s tension between both the GG MC’s family and the RoE MC’s family. The tension in the GG MC’s family rises and falls in pretty reasonable durations while the RoE MC’s family tensions just sort of get put on the back burner.
As for the romances, GG’s romances feel very human and honestly a little raw at times. RoE’s romances are very half-baked, stiff, bland, and forced and I cannot say I felt compelled by a single one of them. Not the MC’s three romances, not the Brother’s romance with Elena, not Bookish Sister with Audrey, not Party Girl Sister’s three suitors, and not the Cousin’s romance with Chaz.
The familial conflict resolution in GG isn’t seamless, which is very realistic and makes me more invested in the characters. As for RoE…it’s really just all sunshine and rainbows. I mean, the MC’s aunt literally almost kills her and her fiancé and she, her fiancé (then husband), and her siblings all overlook it. The MC’s cousin is the only one who even calls the aunt on it and even then the aunt gets away pretty much scot-free and no one else gives a fuck ever again.
So yeah. Getaway Girls had actual thought put into it, while Rules of Engagement was handled with all the grace of a bull in a china shop.

Not gonna lie, I’m genuinely surprised PB actually followed through on making Getaway Girls. (The bar is really freaking low at this point). I really thought this was going to be a PR stunt they announced to get heat off of them for the Open Heart 2 disastrous nightmare they were heading towards and the inevitable heavy backlash they would be receiving because of it. And once the heat died down and everyone moved on in the world, they would quietly find a way to drop it by giving that shitty PR move like “we’re shifting resources and have to drop it but we’ll revisit it at a later date” or “the book didn’t fit in nicely with the future we have planned” or something else along those lines.
The downside though...another book with multiple, playable MCs. I truly think PB just needs to stop trying to experiment with multiple MCs in their stories. They’ve done three to my knowledge, and only Rules of Engagement was able to effectively bring all 4 siblings together in a cohesive plot. Princess Swap turned into a disaster when they decided to focus on the sorority storyline and her...generic, stale boy/girl-next-door love interest, instead of what would’ve been the more interesting political feud storyline. And Across the Void? Do we even remember her? To be fair, Across the Void had a lot of potential, but got largely ignored by the fandom and the last half of the story was clearly rushed to a finish.
And my guess since it’s a multiple MC story, they’re going to give each MC 1 love interest for the book. And it’s safe to assume that will be the case and every book going forward outside of Blades that there’s only going to be 1-2 love interests in a story for 1 MC. Only Murder at Homecoming has had more than 2 love interests for 1 MC, and my guess is that they’re no longer going to do 3+ love interests regularly considering they handled Open Heart so piss-poorly and probably no longer want the backlash for it again.
I really hope this book turns out to be good. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m getting tired of being apprehensive more than excited everytime they announce a new book simply because of their past history...

So I just played chapter one of Getaway Girls.
Did anyone else feel like they went 50 miles per second during that chapter, or just me?

‘Getaway Girls is so underrated. I love how the main girls feel so grounded and real in their flaws and behavior. You can tell how much fun the writers had with it because it is one of their funniest books and the references are top tier. Also Juanita’s storyline was shockingly poignant. All in all, a really good book, and I wish others could see that too.’

The funny thing is, the high pony on the GG cover isn't even a hair option in the book!!
WHAT, I'm so sick of the ponytail but come ON, I thought it was really lame that she didn't get a bespoke cover hairstyle like the MCs usually get, since it would have been a nice chance to showcase a premium black hair option, but also to not even offer the lazy pick that they DID put on the cover??
Please tell me there's at least more than 1.5 curl option, if they didn't put the stock black ponytail in 😩

Gee, I was turned off Getaway Girls out of hand by the plot that once again the MC is betrayed by her partner and meets a new LI almost immediately. How many more times are we going to see the same PB???! I'll probably give them another chance, but for now I feel extremely bored - and I've only read the beginning
Let’s see…
-Rules of Engagement (the earliest instance of this unfortunate trope)
-Bachelorette Party
-Surrender
-The Phantom Agent (Rowan didn’t cheat, but they DID betray the MC by making them think they were dead, followed by us meeting Agent Gray in the next two minutes or so)
Not quite as many instances of this trope as I thought, but the fact that Rules of Engagement and Bachelorette Party had this trope, and now Getaway Girls, which is rather similar at its core to these two books, has this trope?
I’m really hoping PB surprises me because it feels like we’re getting a lot of rehashed plots lately.

It’s so sad that’s she’s had this experience and that she feels she’d be “saddling” him as if her standards are some kind of burden 😕
