Also, feel free to disagree, but I don’t think that Imani calling out Anita for being fake on social media is as big of a burn as the book paints it. Now selling people something you don’t stand by is definitely shitty, so I’d be more inclined to agree if that was the angle they took. But pretending to be this perfectly advertiser-friendly version of yourself for social media? Yeah that’s kinda how it works for people like youtubers and insta bloggers, and even just celebrities in general. Not saying that it’s a good thing, but it’s not a gotcha moment either, y’know?

I believe it's origins mean "laughter" and it originates from Nigeria. This would make since for the character because she is all about bringing joy. I can't remember the quote verbatim, but she did say something about "why cry when you can laugh" in the movie.
