HAPPY 2024 + MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO  “Turn Your Back On the Wind” by The Fourmyula  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuX_5thg3m0 Winding back to 1969-70, Chris Andrews was working with The Fourmyula, a band from New Zealand who’d been recording at Abbey Road next door to The Beatles—musically simpatico with The Fourmyula’s harmony-driven psychedelic pop that became heavier as the band progressed. In 1968 they’d had a string of hits unmatched by any other band from NZ. Back then, NZ bands relied on doing covers of overseas songs, but The Fourmyula insisted on recording their own material. Their song “Nature,” composed by pianist/guitarist Wayne Mason, became a #1 international hit, won several awards, and went on to be covered by numerous artists over the years. It can be said they set the stage for later NZ successes like Crowded House, Neil Finn, and Split Enz.  “Turn Your Back On the Wind” was the title song of a Fourmyula album produced by Chris. In 1971 the band broke up and went home (excepting drummer Chris Parry stayed in the UK, went into A&R and production, and later launched The Cure and The Jam). Meanwhile, as musical heroes in their homeland, The Fourmyula reformed with Mason in 2010 on the heels of a CD box set celebrating their excellent recordings. “Turn Your Back on the Wind” is still getting plays. XFM was a London radio station created in 1992 by Chris Parry (Fiction Records founder, Cure manager) and Sammy Jacob (NME Radio + CDNX aka “Camden Xperience Radio”). It was born out of the infamous 97 Charlotte Street, where Fiction called home, and many Cure fans have made the pilgrimage to, myself included. By 1998 it sadly sold to some mega radio corp, but for a few years, there was literally magic in the air in London.

In June of ‘93 they hosted a 1-day festival at Finsbury Park, “Great Xpectations”, headlined by The Cure. Also on the bill: Belly, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, Catherine Wheel, Damon Albarn & Graham Coxon, Kingmaker, Senseless Things, Sugar, The Family Cat, The Frank and Walters.

I was not yet living in London, but I was there visiting for the summer. And my mom happened to be there for her job. Perry Bamonte from The Cure put me and “mum” on the guest list, and so I am lucky enough to say that I got to attend this one. I was 16 years old. As usual, my memory mostly fails me, and in my excitement about getting to be backstage at a festival (this was my first ever festival experience) I was unaware of most things. I was a Blur fan at this point, but I don’t think I even bothered to watch Damon and Graham perform (though I think they only did one song maybe)! I DO remember seeing Ali from Cranes backstage, so you can see where my priorities laid.

Before it got sold off, Ricky Gervais was hired on as the “Head of Speech”, and then Ricky hired Stephen Merchant to assist him. Former FBI director James Comey pleaded with Democrats Sunday not to veer toward the “socialist left.” The tweet was a follow-up to an earlier message from the longtime Republican that urged Americans to vote for the Democratic Party in the November elections to protect “the country’s values.”

Democrats, please, please don’t lose your minds and rush to the socialist left. This president and his Republican Party are counting on you to do exactly that. America’s great middle wants sensible, balanced, ethical leadership.

The moderating message for “America’s great middle” came just five days after Comey’s tweet urging the country to vote Democrat in the wake of Donald Trump’s troubled summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that “Ambition must … counteract ambition.” All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us.

One possible future for the Democrats — young, female and socialist — emerged in the primary victory of Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, over ten-term Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in New York City last month. Ocasio-Cortez hailed it as the “start of a movement.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said on “Face The Nation” on CBS Sunday that Ocasio-Cortez should “keep doing what she has done.” He added: “She ran an extraordinary campaign. And the reason that she won is she ran on ideas that were relevant to the working people in her district.” The two just campaigned together in Kansas for former Sanders campaign official Brent Wilder, who is running in the Democratic primary to challenge GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder.

Responses to Comey’s latest tweet were mixed. Some supported backing moderate Democrats, while others called for veering further left. Other tweeters simply didn’t want to hear Comey’s opinion and blamed him for Trump’s victory after he re-opened an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails days before the presidential election.
