having thoughts tonight about the duality of being religious and queer. holding tightly to a religion that wants me dead. buried. erased from existence. yet finding comfort in the prayers and the quiet space of a sanctuary. a safe haven for those seeking refuge. looking up at a god that promises love even as i hide from hate.
taking the weapon pointed at my chest and wielding it myself, making it my own

Dani’s feet skipped beneath her as she ran to the other side of the kitchen. Behind her, the man pulled himself up from the wall, still rubbing at his jaw. She had maybe a minute before the shock wore off and he’d catch up with her.
She ran up to the other girl in the cabin, frantic.
The girl was pressing herself back against the counter, breathing heavily, eyes wild and terrified. It hadn’t registered to Dani yet that it might be because of her.
“What are you doing?” Dani demanded, panting. “Run!”
The girl looked at her like she was crazy. It was only when they were in such close proximity to each other that Dani could make out the blonde of her eyebrows, the rosiness in her cheeks. Her piercing blue eyes.
The same features of the man, just arranged differently on her face.
Dani backed away from her, now realizing her mistake. Of course the girl wouldn’t run. Why would she? She was clearly part of the man’s family.
The man started to move forward, and Dani knew it was time to go.
The front door slammed into the wall as Dani yanked it open, swinging as she bounded down the wooden steps leading off the porch. She ran down the dirt driveway and quickly turned to see how far behind her he was, taking in the sight of the small wood cabin she’d just run from. The man rested against the frame of the front door, looking out at her. Blonde hair peeked out from behind him. “Let her run.” Dani barely made out. “She won’t get far.”
Dani staggered to the treeline, still staring behind her, before finally turning back around to run. She didn’t have time to wait for him to follow her. The sun was already starting to set, golden light washing over the woods ahead of her, and she had no idea where the fuck she even was to begin with. She would probably get lost. But being lost in the woods was a lot better than whatever was waiting for her back at that cabin.
It was only a few minutes in when Dani wished she had her shoes. Somewhere between the parking garage and the cabin, she’d lost them. God knows why he’d taken them off of her. Maybe he didn’t want her tracking dirt around his study. Maybe he had a sick perversion for feet. The reason wasn’t important. What was, however, was now she was lacking a very vital form of protection against the elements. No shoes, no socks. Just her bare feet scraping across the various twigs and little stones strewn across the ground in front of her.
Dying sunlight peeked through the trees as Dani continued through. The birds screamed as she passed through, flying up from the brush and into the trees. Her feet were raw. Her ankles were itching like mad. Her chest felt like it was on fire. It was becoming apparent how truly lost she was. There was no end in sight to the trees. There was nothing to follow, no landmarks, nothing to take note of as she ran.
If he didn’t find her, would anyone?
A tree branch floated in Dani’s path. She pushed past it and began to step forward.
A jolt of red-hot pain pulsed through Dani’s legs, sending her careening towards the ground. She couldn’t help the scream that ripped out of her throat as she hit the ground, grasping for the source of the pain. Her ankles were hot to the touch, inflamed and pulsating. She gripped onto one of them as she laid face down in the dirt, gasping for air. The sensation continued, the shocks unrelenting. As Dani’s hands clamped around her ankle, she could feel a small, almost undetectable bump under the hot flesh, a bump that hadn’t been there before. Gasping, Dani let go of her ankle and pushed it away from her.
The shocks stopped.
Dani laid there, staring down at the leg she had just pushed away from her, face burrowed in soil and rotting leaves, stupefied. Her ankle still burned with the aftershock, the muscles of her lower legs cramped and aching, but the source of the pain had simply… stopped. Dani began to pull her ankle back towards her, and as she did, the painful sensation came back to life. She shoved her leg away, and again, the sensation stopped.
What the hell?
She knew she couldn’t stand, as any time Dani pulled her legs towards her, the shocks came back. Tears pricked in Dani’s eyes. This couldn’t be it. She’d tried too hard for this to be the end.
As she began to bury her face into the earth to stifle the keening noise that’d begun to come out of her mouth, she could hear the sound of rumbling in the distance getting closer and closer.
No.
No, no, no.
Eventually, the rumbling of the pickup truck’s engine cut out, and the sound of one of its doors slamming echoed throughout the woods. The birds stopped screaming. Footsteps crunched through the brush, making their way towards her. Eventually, the footsteps reached the clearing, stopping right beside her.
“Are you proud of yourself?” The man asked.
Dani said nothing as she turned her head to look over at him. He stood there, arms crossed and eyebrows cocked as he stared down at her prone form. She could only imagine how pitiful she looked, face down in the dirt, with muddy cheeks from where the dirt and her tears mixed. She quickly wiped her face, sniffing.
“You weren’t very successful, you know. Only got about a mile out before you hit the fence line.” He looked past her, sighing.
Fence line?
As the man reached down to grab her leg, Dani began kicking wildly to avoid his hands, stopping only when another shock hit her ankle. “What am I gonna do with you?” He muttered, wrapping his hand around the bottom of her calf. Her skin burned where he touched her.
As the man pulled her towards him, the movement shifted Dani from her shoulder onto her back, her head bouncing against the earth as he dragged her forward. “You know,” he said, grunting. “I think there’s a lesson to be learned here. And I’m getting the feeling you only learn with experience.” He twisted her around so her foot was just over where she’d been laying, her back a few feet behind it. “You see, years ago, I had an electric fence dug around the property for situations just like this. Now, you don’t got a collar on or nothin’ to set it off, then you could just find a way to take it off, but I found another means to get the same reaction.” He fondled the skin around her ankle, and as he did, a small lump rolled around under his fingertips.
Son of a bitch.
“It seems like you already found out what happens when you step onto the fence line, but I think it’d be good for the both of us if we revisited that.”
Before Dani could say a word, the man was already dragging her back over the spot where she had fallen. Try as she might, the scream that ripped out of her throat once her leg made contact with the fence couldn’t be stopped. The fire erupting from her ankle traveled up her leg and hips and into her chest, burning everything in its path. It was too much. She couldn’t breathe. Her attempts to crawl back from the spot were unsuccessful, as the man’s hold on her ankle was too strong for her to break. She could feel her body begin to flail from the pain, her arms smacking down onto the ground.
Before long, the man pulled her leg off of the fence line. Dani gasped for air as the sensation stopped, going still. Dropping her leg, the man walked to her side, bent down, and quietly said, “Next time you run, I’m leaving you out here.”
Dani laid there for a moment, panting for air, as the man stayed crouched beside her.
“Do you think you’ve learned your lesson yet?”
Dani swallowed, nodding.
“And what’ll happen if you try something like this again?”
Dani said nothing. The man began to reach for her leg again. “You’ll leave me out here,” Dani croaked, throat raw from screaming.
“Damn right, I will.” The man glanced behind him and sighed. “It’s getting dark. We better get movin’.”
As the man dug his arm under her legs and back to lift her up, Dani squirmed, uncomfortable from the proximity. The man gave her a scathing look. She stopped squirming. He hoisted her off the ground like she was nothing, carrying her through the brush towards the bed of his red pickup truck. Dani did her best to resist leaning her body against his as he carried her, but there was only so much distance she could put between the two of them while she was in his arms. He was probably strong enough to outpower her physically, if it came to it. Definitely strong enough to toss Dani into the bed of his truck like she was a sack of potatoes.
Dani swore to herself as she hit the truck bed with a resounding thud, curling in on herself once she was in it. She’d fucked up. She had one chance, and she had managed to fuck it up. She should’ve noticed that something weird was going on with her legs. Then she could’ve done something about it, before she decided to make a run for it and effectively fuck up any shot she could’ve had at freedom.
The truck rumbled as it started, and soon it was pulling out of the trees and down the beaten dirt road it drove up on. Dani almost had the mind to throw herself out of the truck bed, but didn’t in the interest of less pain. It didn’t matter. The drive decided to throw her around the truck bed anyways.
It felt like forever when the truck finally pulled to a stop. She could hear the ignition turn off and the keys jingle as they left the key fob before the eventual click and swing of the truck door opening. Dani nearly jumped out of her skin as the door slammed shut, scrambling to sit up before he got to the back of the truck.
When the tailgate swung open, he was there, offering his hand.
“What are you doing?” Dani asked, eyeing his hand in disgust.
“Offering you a hand down.” The man said. “Unless, of course, you’d like to brave the way down yourself.”
Dani glanced down the foot of the truck bed. The drop to the ground was steep, probably too steep for her to jump down onto without her knees buckling. If she fell now, there was no guarantee he’d help her back up.
She took his hand.
The contact was brief, but it made her skin crawl all the same.
As soon as Dani’s feet settled onto the dirt, the man pulled his hand away from hers and started walking back to the cabin. When Dani didn’t follow, he turned around and said, “What, did you think I was gonna help you walk the rest of the way back? You ran out on your own two feet, surely you can walk back on them.”
Asshole, Dani thought to herself as she took a tentative step forward. Her ankles practically screamed as she moved, threatening to give out the further she walked. She took another wobbling step. And another. Every step was hell, but all Dani could do was grit her teeth and keep moving.
Moving got easier once she reached the stair railing that led up to the cabin porch, but hurt more as she pulled herself up the steps. One ankle finally gave out on her when she hit the second step, nearly sending her hurdling down the steps before she threw her body onto the railing. The man said nothing as it happened. He just watched her from the top of the steps, patient as a saint.
When she reached the door frame, she caught a quick glimpse of the girl from before before she disappeared behind the hall wall. The only thing Dani could make out from her were the slender fingers wrapped around the edge of the wall and the wave of hair that hung out from beyond it. Behind Dani came the man, who crossed the cabin within a few strides and stood at the doorway of the study they came from minutes ago, expectant. She limped her way over to him, and then past the doors. The man led her back to the ring in the floor and gestured toward it. “Sit down.” He told her, poking at her ankle with his boot.
Dani trembled as she sat on the floor next to the ring. She should be fighting back, but then what? There was nowhere to run, no escape she’d be able to find tonight. The man clamped the cuff around her ankle, produced the key from around his neck, and locked it into place. “You know, things would’ve been so much easier for you if you hadn’t decided to run.”
“Had to try,” Dani grumbled as the man let go of her ankle.
He didn’t even acknowledge her as he made his way to the door. “We’ll be seeing each other in the morning,” was all he said before shutting and locking the double doors behind him. The lights followed him, plunging Dani into darkness.
She couldn’t help herself as the tears began to pour down her dirty cheeks. She laid herself down onto the floor and curled into a ball, letting the tears run off her face and into her tangled curls. What the hell was she gonna do now? She couldn’t run with whatever the fuck was in her ankles, and she was in the middle of nowhere. Dani had gotten herself into enough situations to know which ones she could and couldn’t get out of on her own. She wasn’t getting out of this one by herself.
Dani hiccuped with sobs. She knew no one was coming. She was going to die here, and he was going to enjoy every second of it.

Despite the many solicitations, I don’t think it will be a busy for Stephen (at least, on the confirmed appearances) because, well, Ults will be confused on Miles Morales, not the Illuminati. And the other one is just a reprint. Stephen will be certainly more featured in Warlock, which is nice to see again since they share a history. And that’s it!

Would Christ and the Buddha meditate together? I believe so. They may not see eye to eye on everything, but I suspect that they would find much in the way of common ground. Like Thich Nhat Hanh, I see them as natural siblings. And Valerie Brown, a Black Buddhist Quaker, makes me think that the best place to find the kindness between Christ and Buddha is in the silence that is native to all our hearts. Now, I don’t know if Jesus and Siddhartha would read these interesting new books I have from Valerie Brown, Justin Zorn & Leigh Marz — but I sure look forward to reading them. A book about silence, and a book about hope. We need more of both in our frightened, troubled, noisy world, don’t you think? @valerie.lbrown @broadleafbooks @justintalbotzorn @leighmarz @harper_wave #bookstagram #books #Quaker #Buddhist #silence #hope #Golden #simplicity #awakening #peace #Christianity #spirituality #contemplation #mindfulness (at Clarkston, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjET78gORP-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I gotta know what part of Judges you were reading--
I had to read the entire Bible as a kid for a Sunday school program and I remember going back to Judges but I can't remember why
Alright, okay, so there's a lot of battles in Judges that I found interesting, but that was at the same time I was interested in WWII, so that connection was mainly due to comparing battles, not whump. There's a few stories I can really remember that I found super interesting
CW: eye whump, dismemberment, death
The first story was Samson and Delilah, especially when he gets betrayed and I always found that part so good, how he falls for it. And then after he's been weakened and taken to prison, they gouge out his eyes and force him to work. That was the part I was always interested in and something we never talked about in Sunday School (being, ya know, kids). But I always wondered how he dealt with the betrayal and losing his eyesight right away, and then the despair he had to be feeling. No one wanted to talk about that part :(
The second story I had no right reading as young as I did was about this Levite who took back his concubine after she ran back to her father's house for safety, but he takes her back and has to stop at a nice, lovely little town for the night. The people of the town demand to take advantage of the Levite and he has a brilliant idea in which he gives them the concubine instead (yay. wow. why would you do thaaaaat???). She dies, he chops up her body, and distributes the pieces to the tribes of Israel. So. Yeah. That was certainly a story.
Now I write noncon and very dark whump! Can't imagine where I got those ideas from at all, nope nope nope

Fruit of the Wicked: Chapter Three
CW: lady whump, male whumper/female whumpee, poc whump (whumpee is a Black woman), age gap whump (whumper is an older man), religious whump (Christianity), psychological whump, verrrryyyy brief suicidal ideation
A huge shoutout to Marz and Gen for beta reading this chapter

Dani could distantly hear humming as she dreamed.
The tune was familiar, but she couldn’t quite place where she’d heard it before. Maybe she’d heard it from the country station her car had been stuck on for the first few months she had it. Maybe she’d heard it come from the lips of an old lover, who she’d inevitably leave once she’d grown tired of the city she’d been staying in.
Maybe she’d heard it from the diner.
Her eyes flew open when she realized she wasn’t alone. As her eyes focused, she could see the man from the diner, her captor, sitting in a chair across the room from her, humming the song she couldn’t put a name to and flipping through the pages of a curled leather book. He grinned when he noticed she was awake.
“Took you long enough,” the man said, uncrossing his legs. “I was starting to worry you’d never wake up.”
I wish I hadn’t. Dani squinted, trying to see the man through the dying sunlight. How long have I been asleep? She tried to make out the expression on his face. He didn’t look angry, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t.
The man stood up and made his way over to her, shaking his book in his hand. Dani quickly sat up, groaning as she did so. Her body felt stiff and ached terribly. It’d been years since she last had to sleep on the floor, and yesterday’s metaphorical beat down wasn’t helping how she felt. When he reached her, he leaned forward and held the book inches away from her face. “You ever read one of these?” He asked, giving it a wiggle.
Dani stared at the book, making out the faded gold lettering on the leather cover that read, The Holy Bible: King James Version. She shook her head. “No, I can’t say I have.” She said, not taking her eyes off the cover. “Haven’t had much reason to.”
He shook his head, sighing. “I figured as much.” He began to thumb through the pages. “Someone like you’s never felt the fear of God before.”
“And how would you know that?” Dani asked.
“Oh, it’s obvious.” The man brushed her off with the flick of his hand. “A god-fearing woman doesn’t act a thing like you.” The man stopped, a dark look in his eyes. “I could make you fear God.”
Dani couldn’t help but scoff.
“No, you don’t think so?”
“Oh, I absolutely don’t think so. Why would I be afraid of something I don’t believe in?”
“We’ll fix that.”
“I’m sure you’ll try.”
The man gave Dani an all-knowing look. “I think it’s time we get started on our lessons, Dani, don’t you?”
“Lessons?” Dani sat up straighter. “What do you mean, lessons?”
The man smirked and returned to flipping through the pages of his Bible. It took him a minute before he finally came across what he was looking for, and when he did, his smile grew wider. “If we’re going to reform you, darlin’, we’ve got to get some scripture into you.”
“But I don’t need reforming.”
The man rolled his eyes. “That’s what they all say.” Tapping his fingers against the leather cover, he said, “This lesson is simple. I’m going to read you a verse, and you’re going to say it back to me.” He said, trailing his fingers down the page he’d flipped to.
“What happens if I don’t?”
The man studied the page of the book for a moment before closing it and tossing it back onto his chair. “Then I’ll have to punish you.” He dug his hand into the pocket of his corduroy jacket before producing a small, thick strip of leather. The man began to wrap the leather around his hand, leaving a good portion of it left dangling. “Remember this?” The man asked, watching himself wrap more and more of the leather around his hand. “Now, if you do what you’re supposed to do, you won’t have to learn what this does. But if you don’t—” The man paused. “Well, pain is a great motivator for learning.”
Dani swallowed, but couldn’t squash the anger that began to flare.
“Let’s begin.” The man approached her, switch in hand. Before Dani could move, he was on her, grabbing her wrist and pulling her arm up above her head with a bruising grip. He stood above her, angling her wrist towards him. He rested the leather against her wrist. “Psalm 7, verses 14 through 16. Repeat after me: Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.”
“What?”
The switch came down on her wrist, hard. Dani couldn’t help but yelp at the sharp sting it left behind. “Try again; repeat after me.” He repeated the verse, and she clumsily followed. “Good. Now, He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made.”
“He…He made a pit, and, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made.”
“Very good! His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown.”
“His mischief shall… shit, uh, shall return upon his…own head, and his violent dealings shall come down onto his own…” She hesitated, and when she did, the switch came back down onto her wrist. “Fuck! What the hell was that for? I said the verse!”
“‘Shit’ isn’t a part of that verse. Try again.”
Dani glared at him. “His mischief shall return onto his own head, and his violent dealings shall come down onto his own crown.” She spat out.
“Good. Now, repeat that all back to me.”
Dani blinked. “What?”
“The whole passage. Repeat it back to me.”
She sat there in silence. He rewarded that with another smack onto the wrist.
“You heard me. Repeat it back to me.”
“I… I don’t know the rest of it.”
“Sure you do! We just went through the entire thing together. So, repeat the passage back to me. Or I’ll just keep doing this,” he said, giving her wrist a pointed smack with the switch.
Dani jumped, swallowing. “The wicked bring forth… something, with mischief and… something, he made a pit and he dug it, and his mischief shall come down onto his own crown.”
Smack.
“Fuck, I told you I didn’t know it!”
“Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown. Repeat it.”
Dani stared down at her wrist, tears filling her eyes and threatening to spill over. “The wicked bring forth iniquity, conceived mischief and falsehood. He made a pit and dug it. His mischief will come down onto his own head and… fuck, so will his violent dealings.”
“Close, but no.” Smack.
The skin on Dani’s wrist had turned a deep red, hot and pulsating, threatening to swell into welts.
“Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown. Try again.”
“Behold the wicked bring forth iniquity, they conceive falsehood and bring mischief. He has dug a pit and fell into it. His mischief shall come down onto his own head, and… shit.”
Whack. The switch once again came down onto her wrist.
Her guesses were getting worse. She knew they were. It was so hard to think between the pain and the anticipation of it. What would happen if she couldn’t get it right? Dani sucked in a shaky breath and prepared herself for him to repeat himself.
“Behold, the wicked brings—”
“Behold, the wicked brings…”
“—forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief—”
“And hath conceived mischief…”
The man hit her wrist, eliciting a gasp. “That’s not how this exercise works, darlin’. You repeat it back to me once I finish what I’ve got to say.”
Dani tried to pull away from his hands, using her other hand to pull his fingers off her wrist. As she did, the man put the switch down, grabbed her other wrist, and wrapped his free hand around both of her wrists. He yanked her wrists forward, pulling her onto her knees in front of him. “I’m gonna need you to cooperate, darlin’, or this is gonna get a hell of a lot worse for you.”
“You’re asking me to do the impossible.”
“Impossible? It’s impossible for you to memorize a few lines and repeat them back to me? Come on, now, you’re a smart girl. You can do this.”
Dani once again tried to twist her wrists away from him. The man dug his fingernails into the soft skin of her wrists, and she winced. “I can’t memorize something by hearing it once or twice and then being hit when I get it wrong! No one can fucking do that!”
He smiled at her, all charm. “You’d be surprised.” Smack.
“Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown. Repeat it.”
“I don’t know.”
Smack.
“Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown. Repeat it.”
“I don’t know!”
Another smack.
“Try again.”
Smack. Smack. Smack. Over and over again, Dani repeated the passage wrong, in one way or another. Tears that had welled up in her eyes started to spill over, running down her face as he repeatedly hit the same spot on her wrist. This had to be hell, right? To be subjected to the same pain over and over again and expected to be the one to stop something you can’t stop?
He looked down at her, an evil glean in his eye, as she knelt in front of him. Her face came up just above his hips, her head craning back to look up at his face. As uncompromising as he was being, it was clear that he was enjoying every second. “Ready to try again?” He asked, smirking.
“Fuck you,” Dani said, voice cracking.
Smack.
He repeated the verse. She got it wrong. He repeated it again, and again she got it wrong. Dani resolved into tearful babbling instead of coherent attempts. Her wrist was already beginning to bruise, the skin starting to break open. She wondered if he’d eventually cut her off once she was too far gone to continue.
“Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch he has made. His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown.”
“Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity, hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, dug it, and has fallen into the pit he’s made. His mischief shall return onto his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down onto his own crown!” Dani flinched in anticipation of another smack. It didn’t come. She looked at her wrists, and then she looked up at him. He smiled softly back at her. “Did I do it? Did I get it right?”
“You did.”
Relief flooded Dani. “So, it’s over?”
“For now, yes.” The man began to wrap the leather switch back up and tucked it into his jacket pocket. “We’ll start again tomorrow, but I think you’ve done enough for now.” He paused. “Unless, of course, you’d rather get tomorrow’s lesson out of the way tonight.”
“No! No. I’m alright. Today was enough. No, thank you.”
The man hummed. “Suit yourself.”
Letting go of Dani’s wrists, the man turned away from her and made his way back to his chair, picking his book back up and dropping into his chair with a groan. Dani watched as he settled in and flipped through the book. “What are you doing?” She asked when she realized he wasn’t going anywhere.
The man dramatically flipped to another page. “I’ve got about an hour to kill before supper. What do you have going on?”
Dani glared as he flipped to another page.

off the rack #1314
Monday. December 28, 2020
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. These few comic books are thanks to the generosity of fellow fan Doug.
Batman/Catwoman #1 - Tom King (writer) Clay Mann (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Well surprise, surprise. I really liked this first issue. Someone doubted that I would because I wasn't a fan of Tom King's recent stories but this one I enjoyed immensely and not just because of how Clay draws Selina. My favourite storyline in the Batman run was the relationship between Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Bruce Wayne/ Batman and it still is. I really wanted them to get married. This story jumps back and forth in time and involves Catwoman's complicated relationships with the hero and the villains. I hope I get to finish this new Black Label series.
Action Comics #1027 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) John Romita Jr. (pencils) Klaus Janson (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters).  The House of Kent story concludes with the Superman Family winning the day and defeating the Red Cloud. Too bad the new owner of the Daily Planet and mastermind behind the Invisible Mafia, Marisol Leone, escapes justice. I hear Brian Michael Bendis is leaving this book and that some fans are happy with that news. As big a Bendis fan as I am I thought this story sucked. Not even better art would have saved it in my opinion. Even the shocking development on the last page was dumb. I hope the next creative team does a better job on this book.
Iron Man #1 to #4 - Christopher Cantwell (writer) Cafu (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). You can't keep a good Iron Man down. Here I thought Tony Stark was dead. He's back on the racks and teamed up with Patsy Walker/Hellcat in this latest reboot and the first 4 issues were oaky. I stopped reading Iron Man a while back so I don't know who the new A.I. is that he talks to but it goes by B.O.S.S. How he hooks up with Patsy is another mystery to me. Tony has reinvented himself after being resurrected from the dead and he fights a bunch of old foes. His biggest challenge is a new version of Korvac. Remember him? I don't. For straight super hero versus super villains fare, this is okay, middle of the road comics.
Batman Black and White #1 - James Tynion IV, J. H. Williams III, G. Willow Wilson, Emma Rios and Paul Dini (writers) Tradd Moore, J. H. Williams III, Greg Smallwood, Emma Rios and Andy Kubert (art). I call books like this vanity projects. They're written and illustrated in an artsy fartsy way that is pretentious to me. When it comes to Batman I'm more of a blue collar kind of fan and these stories feel more like they should be in a snooty art gallery. The stories are accompanied by creator bios and I found the first two to be worth reading but I didn't read all of them, kind of like how I stop reading the little plaques at the art gallery that goes with the art on the wall after a few. $5.99 US for four short stories in black and white seems steep to me.
Batman #103 - James Tynion IV (writer) Guillem March, Carlo Pagulayan  & Danny Miki (art) David Baron (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). The cover is a blatant bait and switch. It says "Ghost-Maker vs. Clownhunter" but it's really Ghost-Maker vs. Batman as Bruce tries to keep Ghost-Maker from killing Clownhunter. The best part of this issue was Harley Quinn's appearance.
Batman #104 - James Tynion IV (writer) Guillem March, Bengal, Ryan Benjamin  & Danny Miki (art) David Baron (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). I like this Ghost-Maker guy. He wears a headband. I wonder if he still wears one under his helmet. So Ghost-Maker sedated Batman, Harley and Clownhunter last issue and now has them tied up in Arkham Asylum. He left Clownhunter unfettered with a sword handy to kill Harley with. Uh-oh.
Batman #105 - James Tynion IV (writer) Alvaro Martinez  & Christian Duce, Carlo Pagulayan  & Danny Miki (art) David Baron (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). Does Clownhunter kill Harley? Does Ghost-Maker kill Batman? Read this conclusion to "Ghost Stories" to find out. Get ready to roll your eyes.
Superman #27 & #28 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ivan Reis (pencils) Danny Miki (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). The last 2 parts of "Mythological" where Superman fights Synmar came to a grinding, groaning stop. This is the type of story that helps explain why some people get turned off super hero comics. It's just a bunch of big punch-'em-ups and then the good guy wins in the end. And can we get a consistent depiction of the Phantom Zone please? Is it a dimension where the bad guys are phantoms existing in null space or just another dimension where the bad guys live basically like they used to, like in this story? I hate when creators change things to suit their plots. I don't blame fans for grumbling about Bendis after reading this multi-parter.
Detective Comics #1030 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Bilquis Evely (art) Mat Lopes (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Rob Leigh (letters). The grassroots movement to rid Gotham City of masked vigilantes doesn't make me care for the Bat Family more because it sure feels like a contrived plot device. The plotline that I'm much more interested in is Damian's poking around his dad's old case files. That's the kind of detective work I like.
Detective Comics #1031 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Bilquis Evely (art) Mat Lopes (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Rob Leigh (letters). This issue is reflective of events that happened during the recent US presidential election. Anti-Bat and pro-Bat supporters clash and only in comic books can Batman defuse the volatile situation with a noble speech. Meanwhile, Damian quickly finds the person guilty of sweeping the cold cases of the attacks on Bruce Wayne in the past under the rug and brings them to justice. The perp's real identity offers a clue to the villain who shows up at the end of this issue.
Detective Comics #1032 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Brad Walker (pencils) Andrew Hennessy (inks) Dave McCaig (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Father and son set aside their feud to save the rest of the Bat Family from the latest super villain that has them in his clutches. No mystery who the bad guy is with the cover for this issue being a ginormous spoiler. Yes, Hush is back and he's got a great new scheme to hurt Batman.
Superman Special #1 - Andy Lanning & Ron Marz (writers) Phil Hester & Ande Parks (art) Hi-Fi (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). Flashback sequence Marco Santucci (art) Arif Prianto (colours) A Larger World's Troy Peteri (letters). This is part 3 of "Endless Winter" which is DC's version of the finale of the Game of Thrones TV show. It's pretty straight forward. The heroes fight giant ice creatures. The end. I wouldn't spend money on this rack filler.
