From last Tuesday night to tonight, it was the holiday for us. Tuesday night ‘cause we were getting ready for Linzy’s birthday on Wednesday.
We kicked that night off at Lynnwood Hopjack’s with the Chicken Chipotle Ranch Flatbread, a beer for me, and a margarita for Kimmer which, she swore to our waitress, was a just reward for giving birth 20 years earlier.
Afterward, we got birthday presents all wrapped for the birthday girl who turned up later that night from Cornish.
Interestingly, our first-and-only-born managed to pull quite the fast one on us when she later declared it to be midnight on the day of her birth, so...
Could she, then, open her presents? Hmmm???
So we gave her a big thumbs up.
It was only after she’d opened every gift that we realized it to be only a quarter past 11 Tuesday night.
Yeeeeeah.
Well played, Linzy. Well played.
Wednesday morning was all about sleeping in, German Pancakes, Bacon, and orange juice. Then off to the Regal Alderwood Stadium 7 with friends for the debut of Coco, a funny and inevitably touching Pixar movie.
Unfortunately, it was preceded by a “Frozen” short that kept going and going...
And going.
Twenty minutes.
“It was a short ten minutes ago” is how Linzy put it.
After Coco, we hit Chick-fil-A, Goodwill, Trader Joe’s, and Half Price Books before returning home where life got super interesting.
It’s a performing arts crowd, are Linzy’s friends. So after chilling a little with Easy A and waiting for her other friends to show, the rest of the night turned into a series of performances. In one corner, a couple friends comparing favorite movie scores at the piano and sharing their own compositions. In the office, originals on acoustic and electric guitar and ukulele. Later, a musical about a restaurant was improv’d by Ryan, Joe, and Mikey... with Eli providing his own improvised score on piano. And at some point after that, Ryan improv’d a monologue where he’s a Kindergarten teacher conducting class. Mikey and Joe joined in as this basic set-up transformed into a reality TV show with the teacher now taking phone calls from around the country.
It was insane. And all right there... in our living room.
Later that night, we got into one crazy, crazy card game. The energy just kept ramping up.
We didn’t get everyone kicked out until 1:30.
A.M.
Later, that same day... we got up in time for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Then, tidying up the house for family that evening.
After dinner, dessert, and everyone heading their separate ways for the evening, we topped the day off with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. A straight-up classic.
Black Friday was actually a work day for the three of us. So Kimmer headed down to The Center in Edmonds, I walked across the house to my edit suite in our home office, and Linzy bounced between work she hadda do here, at our friend Susan’s place, and Maytag Just Like Home Laundry in Lynnwood.
End of the day, Kimmer was feeling under the weather, so we didn’t go out that night as planned. However, Linzy set up a Hulu profile for us (Mom & Dad) so we spent a little time with our first Christmas specials of the season: three episodes of Bob’s Burgers (”Christmas In The Car”, “The Last Gingerbread House On The Left”, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentle-Mannequins), one from Cheers (”Christmas Cheers”), and one from New Girl (”Santa”).
Saturday morning was German Pancake Morning once again. It was also time to take Linzy back to Cornish.
The afternoon was pretty chill as Kimmer continued to take it easy and I... did a bunch more dishes on top of all the one’s Linzy did the day before.
By evening, Kimmer was feeling better so we hit the gym. Then we hit Goodwill and Value Village for Christmas shopping and Instagramming. We capped the day with “Christmas With The Kranks”, a Christmas episode from How I Met Your Mother (”How Lily Stole Christmas”), and one from Frasier (”Perspectives On Christmas”).
And finally... today.
Today was probably the chillest of the bunch. We slept in... because our cats were up to no good waaaaaay too much between midnight and 7.
Bad cats.
We did German Pancakes again, though. Leftovers, this time, accompanied by freshly cooked soft boiled eggs. Afterward, we dragged out the day ‘cause Kimmer was starting to feel a bit punk again.
We did manage the gym late in the afternoon and, on our way in, had one of those experiences. You know, the one where you pass someone and a few seconds later realize you might know them? Well, this was one of those and, it turns out, we did know this someone. An old friend from a long time ago. A whole other universe, in fact.
It was nice to connect again and run through the high- and lowlights of the past years.
After the gym, we engaged in a little more shopping then returned home to top the day off with “The Santa Clause 2″.
And there you have it: Thanksgiving 2017.
Was it everything the holiday’s supposed to be?
Probably not.
What it did have... was a lot of relaxing. Our week involved family and friends. It involved an insane amount of laughing. It was peaceful, it was lively, it was intentional. It was just the three of us. Then it was just the two of us.
And for all of that... I’ll continue to be Thankful the whole year ‘round.
