The complete segment of Peter Davison's This Is Your Life featuring Robert Hardy, Carol Drinkwater, Christopher Timothy, and Brian Sinclair the actual real-life Tristan.
Transcribed under the cut:
Eamonn Andrews after showing a clip from All Creatures Great and Small 1978: Well Peter, you were pioneering some weatherproof headgear there.
Peter Davison: *Laughs mildly.* Yeah.
Robert Hardy from offstage: And I wonder if you remember who designed your costume for you on that occasion.
Peter Davison: *Laughter.*
Eamonn: Just before curtain up for The Dear Liar, Siegfried himself, television actor of the year, Robert Hardy.
*Applause. Peter laughs.*
Eamonn: And your other co-stars from All Creatures Great and Small, Carol Drinkwater...
*Peter giggles*
Eamonn: And on his way to underneath the arches of the Prince of Wales Theater, James himself, Christopher Timothy...
Peter and Christopher Timothy: How are you? I'm very well how are you? *Laughter.*
Eamonn: And with them. The real life Tristan from the real life veterinary practice of which the series was based...
*Peter laughing*
Eamonn: Brian Sinclair.
*Applause*
Eamonn: Robert, what about those clothes that he was wearing there?
Robert Hardy: It was a very, very, very cold morning. We were absolutely freezing and he comes up with a scarf over his head. And then they said 'we going to shoot now' and he starts to take it off and I said 'No. You look marvelous in that.'
*Peter laughing*
Robert: He said 'I can't.' Because you know, he's very conscious of his good looks.
*Peter laughing harder*
Robert: And his youth and all the rest. And I said, 'Keep it on, it looks much more real, much more cold.' And thus I put his steps firmly on the road to success, which I think was kind of me don't you?"
*Laughter*
Eamonn: I think so too, but you've come through to the end of it as well. Christopher, I know that you admire Peter as an actor.
Christopher: Really? Who told you that?
*Peter and Audience laughing*
Eamonn: Well I think you do.
Christopher: Well he happens to be a very great face(?) and he also happens to be very good at his job. And what more could a man ask for? He's...He's very splendid.
*Peter laughs.*
Christopher to Carol: Is that true or not true?
Carol Drinkwater: No?
*Everyone laughs*
Christopher: You see?
Eamonn: Well now, let me ask the only non-actor here. Brian you are the real life vet that Peter played. Well how did you like the way he interpreted you?
Brian Sinclair: Well I felt very flattered that somebody like Peter was cast as me. And uh I remember telling him it'd have been nice to have been as tall and as handsome as he was.
*Brian and Peter laughing.*
Christopher Timothy from off-camera: I'll go along with that.
Eamonn: Thank you Brian Sinclair, Christopher Timothy, Carol Drinkwater, and Robert Hardy.
*Indistinct voices*
*Clip ends.*

The fact that Peter was made a permanent cast member bc Robert wanted him to stay on is so lovely. Idk what the showrunners were thinking, but once again perfect instincts from Robert Hardy.

That man really took care of:
- filming taking place in Yorkshire
- Tristan being a main character
- James not being recast due to Christopher's injury
- set safety (especially with the horses)
- thoughtful scenes that he wrote himself (like the WWII stuff)
- making sure to have Siegfried support female vets by putting in that convo with James (Rosie's storyline)
- teaching everyone how to start those old cars
- getting everyone to relax in the lambing scenes
Love that man. They would've been lost without him.

There's a short interview with Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison about All Creatures up on iPlayer at the moment, in case you're interested. Not much that fans won't have heard before but worth a watch nonetheless if only to see them interact.

SANDRA: Who’d have thought you two were together at Hendon? CONWAY: And what’s that supposed to mean? SANDRA: Well, Don’s taken care of himself, hasn’t he?

Bit of a continuity glitch in this one, as Derek’s wife is called Jean in series eleven, but worth it for the renamed Sandra telling Charles exactly what she thinks of his lack of support for Derek! Some interesting age stuff, too. Ben Roberts was about 48 here and Billy Murray about 57, but they were at Hendon together and Sandra Conway’s comment suggests that they’re close in age. Earlier in the season, Don was described as fortyish, but I believe Derek was meant to be about 52 going by early writers info, so does that make Don officially early 50s too? (Personally, I only take stuff stated/shown on screen as canon, which means for me they’re both early forties, I guess, and looking terrible for their age.) [/age ramble]
A nice juxtaposition here between the awards ceremony and Tony facing his disciplinary board, and the brilliant irony of Don being awarded a long service and good conduct medal while a Hendon chum is under CIB investigation from Don’s Hendon girlfriend.
Guest appearances from Christopher Timothy (who will always be James Herriot to me, even if he is playing a bent copper here), Samantha Bond, Gemma Craven, and Melanie Kilburn—doing a fantastic turn as Derek’s wife prior to becoming Laura Bryant.

I was told to keep my speech neutral to retain the universality of the part. Which I thought was complete bollocks.
-Christopher Timothy (When he recalled meeting the author, Alf Wight, who had a "soft, lilting Scottish accent".)

I’ve barely begun All Memories Great and Small and already I’ve learned that Chris Timothy first met Robert Hardy in the bathroom and their first ever interaction was Chris committing the cardinal sin of talking to the guy next to you at the urinal because he had to tell him how splendid he thought he was in Edward the Seventh. The more you know.
