The Second Birth - Twenty-Five

Eden couldn't believe she'd let him get her like this again, let him get her pregnant again, he'd evidently remembered all his encouragement from the first time and had wheeled it back out, apparently being a cheerleader was in his remit.

“Cillian, I am going to need you to shut up” she hissed, the contraction tugging across her stomach, her gaze burning into the side of his head. “Ah Edes, I'm just trying to help” he mumbled like a petulant child.

Her grip tightened on his hand “silence, silence will help me” she groaned as the feeling to push took over, Cillian pushed her damp hair off her forehead “don't touch me” she wailed, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Touching me is how I got into this state” she was being unreasonable, he was only trying to help but dear god whoever told her the second time was easier was a liar. 

Cillian slumped back in the chair, his hand numb, god he was exhausted, he stifled a yawn “sorry am I keeping you up?” Eden snapped as she fell back against the cushions.

Cillian ran his free hand over his face, shaking his head to wake himself up “no, just feckin yawned” he stated, her cries of pain filling the room, minutes later she was back to snapping at him “yes sorry Cillian I forgot how hard this is on you on your body” she bit at him.

“Ok, Eden slow pushes and panting” her midwife instructed, Eden sighed shuffling her bum to get a better position before bearing down into the bed. “I can't” she sobbed, exhaling the breath she'd just held in,.

Cillian stood up daring to speak “you can darling, it's almost the end” he hummed, grabbing the cup of water on her bedside helping her sip from the straw.

“Cill, I can't please I can't” she threw her head back in despair, Cillian pressed a kiss to her sweaty forehead “Edes, you have too” he knew that was going to cause her more distress but what else could he say. 

“I wouldn't have to if you hadn't knocked me up” she spat, Cillian bit his lip trying not to laugh as he caught the midwives eye “you weren't complaining at the time, love” he teased, she was already mad at him he had nothing to lose.

She threw him a look one he was sure could have killed him, “you're going to get neutered” she huffed, Cillian couldn't help it this time he laughed head thrown back “not a dog, love but I understand”

Eden was laying back in the bed, fresh sheets and a new nightgown on, their newest arrival on her chest. Cillian sat at her side, his finger stroking across the soft skin of his son's cheek. 

As soon as he'd been placed in Eden's arms the air in the room had settled, she was no longer cursing Cillian, she was grabbing for him to hold her and their son.

“What about Hamlet? To go with Ophelia?” He asked with a serious look on his face. Eden flicked a look at him, drawing in a deep steadying breath, who had made her husband such a comedian in the last two hours, she wanted to talk to them.

“Cill” she sighed, trying not to snap at him “I love you but you're getting on my last nerve” Cillian grinned at her “ah love I was joking, but maybe I should go collect Phee?” He suggested. 

Eden nodded, tilting her face to indicate she wanted a kiss, pressing one to her lips he pulled back, kissing his fingers to press them against the baby's cheek “look after your mam while I'm gone son” he smiled 

Eden laughed lightly, she knew even though he hadn't said it out loud he was hoping for a boy. “We need to think of a name” she called at his retreating back “so Hamlet is off the list?” He chuckled hand on the door “it was never on the list” she retorted.

“I'll see what Phee wants” he gave her another smile before he left, Eden groaned she wasn't sure if that would be much better.

Days later when Eden was home from the hospital, their new baby was currently going by the name Baby Murph, Cillian had been trying his hardest to coax Phee into calling him Hamlet as a joke but her choice was ‘boy’. 

“Hello boy!” she giggled crawling up the bed, her hair a mess, the crease of the pillow on her cheek. Heading for Eden and the baby, Cillian was stood in the doorway, a cup of coffee in his hand “Cill we really need a name for him” she sighed casting a look over at him, he looked ridiculous in his boxers and socks, his hair all over the place and his own pillow creased cheek. 

“Dada said Ham-ley” Ophelia giggled again, Cillian joined them on the bed, Eden took his coffee having her own sip “I said Hamlet” he laughed pulling Ophelia onto his lap. Eden handed him back his coffee “Cill, please” she felt fragile and exhausted.

Cillian nodded "We will, he's not going to be ham forever” Cillian laughed tickling at Ophelia’s sides, Eden felt the rush of tears “he can't be a ham! Cill this is serious” she sobbed, Cillian pulled her into his side cradling her head against him “Hey, he's not going to be a ham, we'll figure it out” he soothed her.

She pulled back “but we knew with Ophelia straight away” she wailed, rubbing at her eyes “we did yes but that doesn't mean we won't know with him” he squeezed her shoulder, “Mama, sad” Ophelia cupped at her face.

Cillian took baby Murphy from her as Ophelia climbed onto her lap wiping her small hands across her face “No baby, just sleepy” she smiled, wiping at her eyes with the sleeve of her pyjama top.

Cillian kissed her cheek “I'll stop telling Phee to say Hamlet, well hamley and we can have a proper think about it?” He asked, Eden nodded. “Go get a shower and I’ll sort breakfast” he patted her knee.

"I expressed some milk early this morning, its in the fridge” she smiled, kissing Ophelia’s cheek “Go make sure Daddy makes baby’s bottle correctly” she joked.

Ophelia nodded “yes mama, come on dada we need to feed baby” she instructed, Cillian laughed making sure Baby was safe on the bed as he got up grabbing his lounge bottoms.

Eden felt lighter than she had in the past week as Cillian closed his laptop, finally baby boy Murphy had a name. Eden stroked her hand over the top of his head where he was laying against her chest.

Baby Albie Murphy had been registered.

“How are we breaking the news to Phee that he's no longer baby boy or ham?” Cillian joked as he sat back against the sofa, Eden needed to feed Albie so she got herself comfortable next to Cillian, “I'm sure daddy will be able to find away” Eden laughed.

Cillian nudged her "hey, we're a team” he hummed “yes but daddy is more magic than mammy” Eden grinned, as she positioned Albie towards her breast, he quickly latched on.

Cillian watched her his head turned on the sofa cushions “I'm so fucking happy I get to do all this with you” he hummed, Eden gave him a look “oh god have the hormones got you too?” She giggled.

Cillian ran a hand over his face “leave off” he laughed, “I just mean it's fucking magic isn't it?” he continued, Eden smiled "no one else I'd want to be doing this with" she admitted, moving into his side resting her head on his shoulder as Albie fed.

“Get some rest love, I’ll mind you both” he hummed, dropping a kiss to the top of her head. Ophelia was down for a nap, even though they had been trying to get her out of them, with a newborn the break was needed.

“We registered baby brother today, so he's a real human” Cillian explained to Ophelia as he lent over the bath, Eden on the small stool Albie sleeping in her arms. “Which means we had to tell the lady his name” he carried on, flicking some bubbles at her she squealed in delight as she listened to him “baby boy” she exclaimed.

“No darling, we thought he needed a proper name like you” Cillian smiled, “I'm fifi” she grinned, splashing in the water, “you are, and baby brother is called Albie” he pushed her hair from her forehead, she turned to Eden a confused look on her face “A-Bee?” She questioned, Eden nodded “Yes baby Albie and big sister Ophelia” 

She shook her head, “hamlet!” She grinned, Cillian bit his lip to stop the laughter, finally after all his hard work she had got it right.

The Second Birthday | Part Twenty-Seven

“When is daddy home?” Ophelia huffed as she sat on the sofa in the dining area of the kitchen, Eden was bent over a cake trying to decorate it for Albie, his second birthday had rolled round quickly. Cillian had told her to order one from the bakery in Dublin but she'd refused, she wanted to make his cake just like she had Ophelia's.

“Two months, baby” she sighed standing up straight, stretching her back “not for Albie’s birthday?” She questioned, Eden wiped her hands on the cloth making her way over “no darling but he's going to call and we can have a big celebration when he's back” she smiled taking a seat next to her daughter.

Ophelia thought about it for a second “So Albie won't be two until daddy is home?” She frowned, Eden smiled pushing her hair from her eyes “No, he’ll still be two, tomorrow but he gets an extra celebration when daddy is home” she explained. Ophelia looked up at her “do I get two celebrations on my birthday?”.

Eden shook her head “we might be out with daddy for your birthday, remember?”  Ophelia nodded “that's my present” she stated, Eden pulled her onto her lap “oh daddy is your present?” She laughed “yes because I miss him” Eden watched as the tears welled in her eyes, Eden pulled her tighter into her body, Ophelia had started to really understand Cillian being away this time round.

“Oh love I know you do, I do too” she kissed the top of her head, “let's go wake Albie up see if he's less fussy” Eden offered as a distraction, standing up and moving Phee onto her hip as they left the cake behind and headed up the stairs.

Albies second birthday had been a modest party with family and a few mum friends, nothing too overwhelming, but both Ophelia and Albie had crashed out as soon as they'd had a bath and been tucked up in bed.

Eden had left most of the clearing up for the morning, showered and got straight into bed with some leftover party food. Her phone went off as soon as she turned on the TV, muting it she answered the FaceTime from Cillian.

“Hey baby” his voice was soft, he looked exhausted, the weight he'd lost for Oppenheimer made him look even more drawn. “Hey Cill” she smiled, relaxing back into the pillow “what's the time there?” She asked, Cillian flicked a look up to the top of his screen “four thirty” he sighed “feels like I've been awake for hours” he laughed.

Eden placed her plate on the bedside, she caught his knowing look of amusement at the fact she'd got into bed with food “you probably have when did you start?” She asked, “five this morning” He gave her a smile that didn't quite meet his eyes. “Cill, I would tell you to slow down but I know you too well so I'm just going to ask you to take care of yourself” she laughed lightly.

Cillian nodded “I am love, I promise” he moved on the sofa he was sitting on “so how did the party go?” He asked, keen to change the subject “Mam sent me loads of photos, I miss you all so much” he looked emotional “it wasn't too hectic, your mum was a god send” she laughed, “Albie was a bit overwhelmed I think all the attention” 

“He's like his dad” Cillian joked as Eden nodded, “Cill, I miss you” she sighed, they rarely had time just two of them on the phone, usually it was filled with Albie trying to press his chubby fingers on the screen or Ophelia demanding to talk to Cillian. “I miss you too darling, so fucking much” he pushed his hand over his short hair.

“Any more thoughts on coming out In a few weeks?” He asked, Eden nodded “I spoke to Sarah, I'll just need to put in a few extra evenings the next couple of weeks to cover work, but she was happy for me to take time off” Eden smiled, “that's great, I've mentioned to Chris so he's going to have a look at the filming schedule” he explained.

Eden nodded “Cill even if you're working we will just be happy to be close to you” he nodded with a bigger smile this time “and I get to come back to sleep next to my beautiful wife” he hummed, Eden smiled even after eight years hearing him call her his wife made her stomach flip “can't wait to curl up next to my husband”

The alarm from behind him made Eden jump “back to work?” She pouted slightly, Cillian nodded “sorry love, I've got an interview in twenty minutes” he moved from the sofa, “Don't apologise, it's nearly midnight here anyway” she tried to hold back her yawn “you stayed up to talk?” He asked knowing her well enough “of course wanted to see you and hear your voice” she climbed under the covers.

“Get some sleep darling, I'll call you tomorrow” Eden nodded “love you” she smiled with another yawn “love you too Edes” he waited for her to disconnect the call before he locked his phone.
