You go home.

Or, rather, you go to your father’s apartment.

Not your home; hardly his. A cross stitched pattern with the words “Live, laugh, love” hangs near the front door - a gift from a neighbour, he says. He has a pink apron hung in the kitchen, where you sit at the breakfast bar while he brews a cup of tea for you both.

Imagine - the Great Barron Draxum in a one-bedroom apartment, with a breakfast bar. No great cavernous laboratory, or warm study slash library, no gargoyle servants, hardly room for his broad shoulders to duck through the front door. There’s a kind of dissonance to it. He does not belong here, outside of the looming castle that grew around you both, reduced to a pile of rubble.

He tells you about his newest creation, Sloppy Joseph, and how it is helping out in the kitchen. He gushes to you about its development.

He has replaced you.

He speaks about his job, the awards he’s won. He tells you about a sort of scavenger hunt with your brothers April has requested he be present for. He asks you about your progress on the projects he’s assigned to you.

You shamefully relay to him the stalls in your development. The lair is fully operational, you created vehicles for easier transportation, you’ve created a network of security cameras to add to your web already in the Hidden city. None of that was what he asked of you.

He asks you about your mystic studies.

You tell him of your work in memory spells, and circlecraft. He asks if you have been neglecting your potion brewing, and you insist that no, distilling mystic liqueur surly counts as practising your brewery.

He is inclined to agree, and you sag with relief. At least there’s that.

He asks why you are so fidgety, what has you signing rather than speaking today. You shamefully ask him to use his waning mana to inspect you. You have been dabbling in unsavoury spellwork, and wish to be sure that you are not hurt in some way you cannot detect. You remember the warm, electric feeling the mana had around you, when you asked it to form a spell and it responded.

He gives you a look that adds to your nausea, and you both stand. When he wraps you in his mana it’s both comforting and strangling, comforting but constricting, and you have to rush to the small kitchen garbage can to hurl.

You are disgusting, and you have failed. Not only that, the Barron has to retake his seat after exerting himself. He appears slightly pale.

He asks what you’ve done, and you tremble when you retake your seat. You apologize, and he relays the steps you must take to brew a potion that will aid in healing your soul. He insists you read up on such a potion at the mystic library to ensure you get it right the first time, and you agree. You will not waste resources anymore than your initial mutation already had.

He places a gripping hand on your shell, above the sprawling scar at the bottom of your cervical vertibra, and you flinch so hard you nearly fall from your chair. He levels you with a look, and you drink your tea. It numbs your nerves slightly, makes you somewhat more able to endure the overstimulation coursing through your veins, more meat than metal, and all wrong.

A clock above his sofa ticks. There is no dog bed. The fact makes you want to cry. Instead, you take your scolding gracefully. Though you have your autonomy, you should not be placing yourself in situations so carelessly, whence you may damage yourself.

My buddy Chuck is one of the manliest men I know. He’s soft, caring, and compassionate. He treats the people in his life with respect and stands up for those who are marginalized at every opportunity. He also knows that doing those things doesn’t mean that typical “manly” things are bad, and that masculinity isn’t “toxic.” In so many ways he embodies what it means to be present, open, and to see people for who they are: people, not labels, or simply members of a group. They are unique beings, with inherent worth, because of their divine inner nature, not their outward identity. Who Chuck is shines through in his business, @earthandhide, and each piece that he creates demonstrates the powerful of the individual captured in story and expressed in outward physical form.
