Raise Your Voice by Lea Baker offers expert vocal coaching, helping students discover their free, authentic, well produced voice.
- What I Do:
I help people find their freely produced, efficient and authentic voice. I love to teach and empower students. Each singer is different, there is no 'one size fits all'. My sessions involve lots of physical and vocal explorations, positive reinforcement and lots of encouragement.
Using actors' voice training techniques, I help singers find freedom through embodying their voice and releasing unhelpful tension.
I believe ‘trying harder’ nearly always leads to vocal difficulties. When vocalists discover the power and range of natural, organic and instinctive sounds, they grow in confidence and ease - often discovering the voice they didn’t know they had!
I help those who rely on their speaking voice for their profession, such as teachers, public speakers and call centre workers (to name a few!), avoid vocal fatigue, become more engaging to their listeners and maintain a healthy voice.
- What I Offer:
Success in learning depends on finding the right Instructor; someone who knows the subject well and understands how you learn. My teaching style is practical, holistic, non-gimmicky, and based on science. Students learn how to sing or speak optimally. Clear specific language and examples are used, leading students on a self-discovery journey.  Everyone has a voice. My job is to help you release its full potential.
Here are the four philosophies I follow:
* Trying harder will almost always lead to a deterioration in vocal improvement. It’s finding the ease in vocal use that is the key. Less is often more.
* The most freely produced and authentic singing or speaking comes from your natural, organic and instinctive voice. Often it's noticing and releasing unhelpful vocal habits & muscle tension to find that voice.
* I believe learning is about self-exploration and discovery, with guidance from your voice coach. Doing what the teacher asks to gain their approval isn’t learning.
* Training at NIDA opened up a whole new world. Using acting voice training helps singers to feel and sense their voice, rather than just hear it.
Why choose me?
* I help the student discover for themselves with guidance and targeted techniques.
* I take the time to understand the mindset of the student towards their voice and address this in my coaching.
* I teach holistically – I teach the whole person, not just their voice.
* Students get clear explanations of the ‘why’ when to comes to voice usage.
* My Teaching is underpinned by a good understanding of the science and physiology of the voice.
* Finding the unhelpful habits or traits of the student and helping them rewire these.
* Experiential learning is key, helping students to discover for themselves, no “pleasing the teacher”.
* Learning is layered. What each particular student needs at this particular time. I don’t clutter them up with lots of ‘nice to know’ stuff - it's not about how much I know, it's about what the student needs to be a better singer, speaker or performer.
* Voice lessons are either online or in person (Covid safe).

Call Me ‘Love’ | Leah Williamson x Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a new viral trend on TikTok.
It’s pretty simple. Not a dance trend or a catchy song to lip-sync to.
All you have to do is film your partner’s reaction to you calling them by their real name. It often makes for some funny reactions from the partners who found themselves falling victim to this trend.
Perhaps for some couples, this wouldn’t elicit much of a reaction, but you knew your girlfriend well enough to anticipate that her reaction would likely make it worth trying the trend.
Outside of your families, friends and teammates, Leah was what most people would probably describe as…professional. She had captained her national team into winning the euros not too long ago, and as a result, the increase in media attention and scrutiny made her more conscious of the kind of person she portrayed herself to be in front of the media.
On the pitch she was every bit a captain— a true leader. She’s has determination, grit, and a competitive drive that can pull the team together until the final whistle. Leah was very vocal on the pitch and unafraid to call out the referees for bad calls. She’ll get right up to their faces and stand her ground. Fans often joke online that they can hear her shouting from the stands.
To add to that, she was a damn good player too. Leah is a crucial player to her team for both club and country. She’s fluid on the pitch, and her confidence in her skills is reflected in the way she plays. She’ll make risky but clean tackles, she can whip a wicked long ball, and she can score the odd goal when the opportunity lands on her head. Her confidence and skills can often leave people unnerved or in awe– depending on who you ask.
It doesn’t help that while your girlfriend has a pretty face, she can also look quite intimidating at times. Furrowed eyebrows, lips pressed together in a tight line, and blue eyes darker than usual— all this combined is what you lovingly refer to as her classic “Captain Williamson face”.
The increased media attention has made the defender slightly more closed off during captain duties. Gone was the goofy, smart-mouth girl who was more than happy to yap at the cameras during media day. Nowadays, she may come across as slightly aloof and distant at times
but that was only for the cameras.
With you, Leah was still the same girl you fell in love with. The girl with a wicked sense of humour and a dirty mouth that went along with it. When she was around familiar company, the girl often made the most outrageous remarks— with jokes and quips that should not be repeated around those who can’t understand her sense of humour.
Another surprising thing about the Arsenal defender and England captain— she can get pretty clingy. Physical affection is one of your girlfriend’s love languages and you are always more than happy to indulge her whenever. Your mornings together start with kisses, and your day ends with kisses. The blonde always needs to be touching you at all times whenever you are around— a hand on the hip, an arm over your shoulder, or a head on your lap. The intimidating captain they see on the pitch is definitely not the same girl that whines whenever you accidentally forget to give her a kiss before she leaves for training.
Even though she might try and deny it, your girlfriend was a romantic. She loved planning dates, wearing matching clothes, and the cheesy nicknames.
And that’s why you were so excited to try out this new TikTok trend on her.
——————————————
You situate your phone on the dinning table, fiddling around to make sure it is slightly hidden from view. You have it leaning against a vase which holds a charming bunch of tulips that the blonde had bought for you the other day. The back camera of your phone is pointed towards where your girlfriend usually sits during meals right across from you. The other decorative vase is what will hide your phone from the blonde, but is deliberately placed at an angle so your phone’s camera can still capture her reaction.
You glance at it one more time, making sure the record button is on.
“Did you want extra parmesan on yours, baby?” You hear your girlfriend shout from the kitchen.
“Yes, please!”
You hear a “coming right up, madam!” before you hear the sound of a drawer being pulled open and then shut.
She’s probably grabbed the cheese grater.
Soon the smell of savoury aromas reach you. You detect the earthy fragrance of garlic first. Then it’s the smell of onions sautéd in olive oil, mingling with the sweet aroma of ripe tomatoes. The scent of freshly chopped herbs— probably basil and oregano— adds a refreshing note in the air, while the unmistakable aroma of Parmesan cheese grating fills the air with a hint of nuttiness. It’s a familiar and comforting aroma simply because it’s the smell of the one and only dish that your girlfriend can successfully cook without setting the kitchen on fire. Not a moment later, Leah appears with a plate on each hand and a grin on her pretty face.
And a smudge of red pasta sauce on her shirt.
Mean, scary captain, my ass.
Dressed in an oversized white T-shirt with the sleeves rolled up, grey Nike sweatpants, and her favourite fuzzy house slippers; your girlfriend is the least intimidating person in the world right now.
She walks the short distance to your spot at the dinning table, placing a plate down in front of you. You eye the dish in front of you— the only recipe perfected by your girlfriend. The blonde can’t make scrambled eggs right— they will either be too soggy or practically burnt— but she can make the dish that has become a comfort food of sorts since you started dating her.
You hear a throat clear from beside you.  Leah is still standing, her other hand still holding her own plate. “Doesn’t the chef get a kiss?”
“Uhh— I don’t think my girlfriend would like that” You grin up at her. With her blonde hair tied in a loose low bun, she looks a lot more relaxed then when she first came home earlier after training.
“Baby, give me a kiss before I burn my fingers off from holding this hot plate”
You roll your eyes playfully, before squealing at the ticklish poke given to your side.
“Oi! Don’t act like it’s a chore to give your girlfriend a kiss when she rightfully deserves it”
You stand up from your seat slightly, reaching up to grab the side of the blonde’s neck to pull her closer and press a sweet kiss to her lips. “Thank you for dinner, chef”
The smile that spreads across Leah’s face is one you would like to bottle up and keep close forever.
“Pleasure is all mine, madam” And then her lips meet yours again, this time with a lingering bite on your lower lip just before she pulls back.
You almost forget about the video.
Once the defender was seated in her own chair, you both dug into your dinner.
“…how is it?” It’s sometimes still striking to you that England’s fierce defender is the same shy girl in front of you, just waiting for you to compliment her on her cooking.
“That’s bloody delicious that!” You raise a hand up for a high-five and your girlfriend’s palm meets yours in a satisfying smack. Before she call pull her hand away, you grab hold of it, giving it a loud kiss. The bashful giggle that comes out from the blonde almost makes you regret the prank you were about to pull on her.
Almost.
You decided to let the blonde get a few bites of her dinner, not wanting to start too early otherwise she will figure out that something was up. But now it was time.
You bring your napkin up to wipe at your mouth to disguise the grin that was already growing on your face, mentally prepping yourself one last time. You swallow your last forkful of pasta and clear your throat to get your girlfriend’s attention. Immediately, in the middle of scoping of bite of pasta into her mouth, the blonde looks up and all her attention is on you.
“Do we still have more parmesan, Leah?”
The look she gave you was almost comical. Her mouth immediately drops into a small frown and her eyebrows furrow, a wrinkle appearing on her forehead. You itch to remind her not to frown but you cannot break character now.
She swallows her mouthful, a frown still present on her face. “What?”
“I said I want more parmesan—“
The arsenal defender picks up her napkin, wiping at her mouth, before balling it in her fist and dropping it by her plate. You nearly smile at the sight. Leah is the type to always neatly fold her napkin– an endearing habit you have grown to mirror over the past couple of months of dating her. She is clearly annoyed. “Excuse me?”
“Sorry— can I pleaseee have more Parmesan, Leah”
She narrows her eyes at you from across the table. “Don’t do that”
“Do what?“
“Don’t call me Leah. You never do that”
“Yes I do”
“Only when you’re mad at me” That was true. You only ever called Leah by her first name when you were mad or annoyed at her. It was usually the first telltale sign that you were about to start an argument. You loved that she knew you so well and mentally reminded yourself to reward her for that later.
“You only call me “love” or “baby”. Don’t call me Leah” You nearly laugh at how she spits her own name out at the end, as if it was a cursed word. You couldn’t wait to watch the footage back.
“But Leah is your name”
“Not to you”
You compose yourself, wanting to drag this prank for as long as possible, and raise an eyebrow at her. “What if I want to?”
“No you don’t.” You almost laugh at how genuinely frazzled she looks. Hair a mess, loose strands falling out from her bun and framing the sides of her face. The slight pout on her lips contrasts the stern tone she tries to take on.
At your eyebrow raise and your lack of verbal response, her fork clatters onto her plate. She’s serious now. “Baby, what the fuck are you on about”
But you were having too much fun to stop now. “Nothing. Now will you please go grab the Parmesan, Leah”
“No.” The defender crosses her arms across her chest, leans back and slouches in her chair. A familiar look of determination on her face, so similar to the face she makes whenever she’s marking a difficult opponent on the pitch; however this time her opponent is you. “Not until you call me what you really call me”
“Dickhead?”
“Oi! Don’t be crass at the table”
You roll your eyes for extra flair. “You’re being ridiculous—“
“Me!? You’re the one addressing your own girlfriend by her government name, mate”
You stand up from your chair, ready to walk to the kitchen and grab the damn parmesan yourself, but you are stopped by an arm around your waist pulling you into your girlfriend’s lap. You right yourself, sitting sideways with your arm over her shoulders.
She wraps an arm around your waist with one hand gripping your thighs to steady you. You nearly break once you look up and catch sight of the pout on the defender’s face.
“Are you mad at me?” Her tone softens. It’s the same tone she uses whenever she’s feeling particularly clingy, so different from the tone she uses when she adorns the captain’s armband on the pitch.
“Babyyy” When you don’t reply Leah grabs your cheeks, gently squishing them together so your lips are forced into a pout. She leans up and places a smacking kiss on your pouting lips, frowning slightly when you don’t react at all. “Hey! Are you actually mad or something? Tell me what I did wrong so I can fix it”
Determined as ever, the blonde grabs your cheeks again with a hand on your jaw and pecks your lips a few times, drawing back slightly to gauge your reaction after every peck. When you once again give her nothing, an eye roll is your only warning before you feel a sudden, but very sharp, bite to the side of your neck.
“Ouch, love!”
“Aha! I’ve got ya!” You bring a hand up to feel the stinging bite on your neck, and your fingers graze the teeth marks left by your very own girlfriend.
“That bloody hurt!” You try to scowl at the blonde but it’s kind of hard to do when you see the big grin she’s currently sporting. You do nothing to stop your lips from curling upwards into a smile.
“Can you please go back to calling me “love”– please” Leah pleaded, the ‘e’ whiny and prolonged.
She’s so bloody cute.
“Yeah. I think I’ve had my fun. Prank’s over!”
“Wha– prank?!”
You point at your phone that was still propped up against the vase, just slightly hidden from her view but now the sole focus of her attention.
You squealed at the pinch to your waist. “Don’t ever call me Leah unless you’re mad at me. I only respond to ‘love’"
“Yeah? What about ‘Captain’?”
“Baby, you know exactly what happens when you call me ‘Captain’” You barely had time to react to her words because the next thing you know, your girlfriend has you in a fireman carry and was walking down the hallway towards your shared bedroom. You playfully attempt to wiggle out of her strong hold, and is awarded by a sharp slap to your ass to still you.
“You know what, I think it’s time for dessert, baby”

CHLOE offered to try and train her the best she could, though she eventually had to move back to KOREA, leaving CHARLIE to try and teach herself some things. she kept working and auditioning for many companies to no avail and in 2022, when CHLOE opened her own company, she allowed her to come under the company as a trainee. CHLOE had been planning her first girl group as a FIVE membered group, though eventually added CHARLIE to the lineup last minute and she became a member or PRISMATIC.

Build Up Episode 0: Getting to Know the Boys Part 3: Team Power
Tumblr media
Hey, friends! Welcome back to this crazy project I set out for myself -- writing up a bit about each of the 40 contestants on MNET’s Build Up before I dive into the recaps. Last post, I covered Team Soul. This post will be about Team Power. Let’s do it!
Same caveats apply: 1) I’m pressed for time, so proofreading will suffer; please be kind! 2) screencaps will be awkward due to technological issues and 3) All of these guys are amazing vocalists; my critique is splitting hairs and just my opinion at the end of the day.
Choi Haram
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also have almost no information about Haram, except that he’s a musical actor. In his teaser, V08, I Want to Fall in Love  by Johan Kim, he sings in that classical “musical actor” way, which is just not my favorite style of singing. That doesn’t make it bad! He also is singing a ballad. Which does mean it’s bad! Ha ha, jk.
I'll do my best to evaluate him even though the song is a ballad. I'm a hero, right? His soft tone he uses in the verses is just too breathy and nasal for my taste. But I do like the belt on the chorus part -- nice work. This guy definitely knows how to sing. I wonder what he’ll sound like singing more of a pop song.
Kim Minseo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Kim Minseo, 21, who also appeared on a show I’d never heard of called “The Origin - A, B, or What?” It “was a new type of survival program that combines balance games along with K-pop,” whatever THAT means, and it created the group ATBO. On the Wikipedia page for that show, it says that he was born in January of 2003, making him 21 now, and it also says that he lived in China for ten years and can speak Chinese. I wonder if he and Wumuti will ever speak some Chinese together?
I really, really liked his teaser performance of Rolling in the Deep by Adele (V39), slight pronunciation issues aside. It was actually kind of cute how he sort of just gave up on pronouncing ‘underestimate’ halfway. He has a distinct, real voice that shows some training but also some rough edges. For me, he’s one to watch. Watch? Listen to? Whatever.
Yoon Inhwan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yoon In-Hwan, V23, is one of the enigmas of the show -- I have no information about him. For me, his mini audition showed an unpleasantly throaty, nasal, thick vocal color that I didn’t exactly love. He sounded like he had just drunk a whole gallon of milk or something. I don’t know if that’s how he always sings, or if he just was feeling unwell that day or what. As promised, he did have a lot of power, and he also had a good sense of pitch. Hopefully he’ll do better going forward!
Jo Hwanji
Tumblr media
I haven’t been able to get a decent screengrab thus far, but Hwanji is the guy in the uniform in episode 1. He’s only 24 -- isn’t that surprising? Before this, he went on other shows called Phantom Singer 3 and Fantastic Duo 2.
He’s another musical actor, but in his teaser song V26 he breaks the musical actor mold by singing an upbeat retro swing song by JYP -- yes, that JYP -- called Swing Baby. I like the song, and I also like the way he sings it. Clean but full, with fun little growls to brighten things up, varied dynamics, impeccable pitch, and the power he promised. Good stuff! He’s also so hilariously square. I mean it literally. He looks like a Pixar character. It’s cute. I'm looking forward to hearing more from him.
Lim Junhyeok
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Junhyeok, age 30, debuted as part of the JYP-based k-band Day6 in September 2015, singing and playing keyboards. In late 2015, it was revealed that he’d been chatting with a female fan online, and that they might have been dating. The controversy built, and he felt obligated to leave the group in February 2016, getting to enjoy less than six months with the group. God, that must have been just heart wrenching for him. I can’t imagine.
Afterward, he joined another band called Be Blossom, but stayed only about a year. Since then, he was on a survival show called The Unit, which was about rebooting debuted idols’ careers. (A few other contestants of Build Up also went on The Unit, too.) He also continues to compose music, which I think is actually his first love.
His teaser song performance, V05,  was I Love You by Shin Hyo Bum, and you can see in the silhouette that he’s playing the keyboards as he sings. I didn’t love his performance, unfortunately. It felt a little shrieky to me at times, and his softer notes were a little too breathy for my taste. He definitely belongs in the Power group, though. He can sure belt when he wants to -- it’s the softer segments that challenge him. Maybe it’s just my bias against ballads acting up, as well.
It’s kind of a bummer, because for whatever reason, I like him. I can’t help but cheer for a guy who (a) was kicked out of his group after six months for dating, like, omg, how dare a young person want to date! (b) is a bit on the older side (c) composes music and plays instruments and most importantly (d) shows up to a survival show in a goddamn hoodie. Like, yes, king. So I hope that I grow to like his vocals better as I hear more from him.
Side note: The Korean family name “Lim” is often transliterated as “Im” since that’s actually closer to how it’s pronounced. So if you see his family name written as “Im,” that’s why. (Nayeon from Twice has the family name of Lim/Im -- hence her album name.)
Park Jeup
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Park Jeup makes himself known by wearing an enormous bow on the first day. It’s just such a choice, when he’s so masculine looking. Own it! Yes!
Anyway, he’s 30, and is a member of IMFACT. He’s been on a bunch of singing shows, as well as The Unit, which would have put him in company with Lim Junhyuk (former Day6) and Hyukjin from Fave1.
His group IMFACT debuted in January 2016 and put out several albums and singles, but none of their songs have even one million views on Youtube. Most of them don’t even break 500,000 views. In 2022, all the members of IMFACT left their agency (Star Empire). The group hasn’t officially disbanded, but the members are listing themselves as soloists. They really weren’t a bad group, and it’s a shame that they never caught on, but it’s just such a crowded landscape. Their song Only You spent some time on my playlist a few years back, and Jeup’s voice in that song is really sweet.
I tried my best to give his teaser song a try -- he was V34 --  but I just dislike ballads so much that I can’t judge him fairly. Vocally, though, he sounds well trained. He has a surprisingly high pitched timbre considering his appearance.
Here is a performance he did in 2018, in which he made the MNET reaction editors play the instant replay buttons like a xylophone. I think there was some sort of gas leak in the studio that day, because, yeah, his voice is nice but people are having spasms in their excitement and it’s a bit much. Also, he's singing another ballad so it's kind of a no from me.
A song that’s a bit more palatable for me is this cover of Exo’s Monster on The Unit.
Tumblr media
Jeup doesn’t seem to be the main vocal, but he is the one who sings “I’m sorry…. You make me… so crazy, you know you do.” He also does the higher harmony line/descant/whatever it is over the “Come here girl, you… call… me… monster” line. And he pulls it off!
I recognize Jeup’s skill, technique, and passion for the art. I’m not as sure that I love his timbre for whatever reason. I hope his voice grows on me, in part because I always have a soft spot for hard working nugu idols, and in part because I always gravitate toward the older, more broad shouldered idol types, like Baekho from NU’EST and Wyatt from ONF. Jeup, fighting!
Hyukjin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hyukjin is 30 and is from a group called Fave1, where he’s lead vocal and lead dancer. He also appeared on The Unit, so he may also know Park Jeup and Lim Junhyuk.
Ok, so his background is kind of sad, fam.
His first group, 100%, debuted in 2012, so he’s been at this a while. There were originally seven members, but two quit, and then one member, the leader Minwoo, passed away in 2018. That had to be so hard on Hyukjin and the rest of the team, to lose not just their friend and teammate but also their leader. The group disbanded in 2021, and three of the four remaining members formed Fave1 at a new agency. So they’re kind of like Loosemble or Vivez that way.
100% started off doing ok -- their older songs had 1 or 2 million views, good for the time period -- but their more recent songs max out at around 400,000 views. Fave1, unfortunately, is really not doing nearly as well as even 100%. Their songs usually have views measured in the thousands, and their videos look like they were shot on someone’s iPhone. Really, the whole thing is kind of heartbreaking.
In his teaser, Hyukjin was V22 , and sang a quasi-heavy metal song -- think Dreamcatcher style -- called Lazenca, Save Us. It was a unique choice, that’s for sure! I think he was hoping that it might make a splash for being the guy who did THIS song. I’m not sure how I feel about his performance. I think I need to hear more of him to make up my mind. But I mean, gotta respect someone who comes out of the gate with that! I think his natural voice is not quite as deep and rich as it should be to successfully pull off this kind of thing, but he displays strong sense of pitch and a lot of power. It does gets a bit shrieky and it sounds like he’s hurting his throat. I’m looking forward to seeing what else he can do because I just want to see him succeed.
Ok, that's about it for this post! Sorry if it was a bit of a bummer. So many sad stories in this industry. In the next post, we'll be visiting with Team Unique, and then we'll finally get into the recaps! See you soon.
xoxo

Classical Music in La Corda (Part 2)
Related Links: An Introduction to La Corda Classical Music in La Corda (Part 1)
(Article also available on Medium)
===
La Corda d’Oro (Kiniro no Corda, 金色のコルダ), published by KOEI in 2003
Tumblr media
The below list of pieces appeared in the game La Corda d’Oro that was first released on September 19, 2003.
===
Air on the G String (G線上のアリア)
Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach (バッハ) Category: elegant (清麗) Keywords: passion, compliment, determination, reputation, aura, people, confidence, flower, life
This piece originates from Bach’s Orchestral Suite №3 that is called “Air”. In the arrangement by August Wilhelmj (in 1871), the violin melody is transposed such that the entire piece can be played on the violin’s lowest string (i.e. the G string). While the original key of Bach’s version is in D major, Wilhelmj’s version is in C major.
Romanze (ロマンスト長調)
Composer: Max Reger (レーガー) Category: vivid (彩華) Keywords: resonance, creation, bride, student, education, passion, hometown, youth, home
Romance (Romanze in German) generally refers to any vocal or instrumental piece that has a tender, lyrical quality. This piece, originally for violin and piano (original version), was first published in the magazine Neue Musikzeitung in 1901. It now has multiple different versions, including for flute, clarinet and cello.
Valse Sentimentale (感傷的なワルツ)
Composer: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (チャイコフスキー) Category: gloomy (愁情) Keywords: despair, dream, admiration, dedication, goddess, love, encounter, suffocation, marriage
Valse Sentimentale is one of the “Six Pieces (Six morceaux) for solo piano”, Op. 51 that Tchaikovsky wrote for the bourgeois salons in 1882. Each of the piece is dedicated to a different person, and the final movement Valse Sentimentale is dedicated to Emma Genton — an important woman in Tchaikovsky’s life. The melancholic melody gives a sense of romance while vividly depicts the image of a beautiful woman. My personal favourite is this version arranged for violin.
Sicilienne (シチリアーノ)
Composer: Anonymous Category: elegant (清麗) Keywords: family, children, goal, passion, promise, prospect, career
According to the official fanbook or the game, Sicilienne is composed by the blind Austrian Maria Theresia von Paradis (パラディス). Say even in this online video, the piece is attributed to Paradis. However, latest research revealed that it is very likely a musical hoax by violinist Samuel Dushkin, who published the piece in 1924.
Sicilienne (also known as siciliano or siciliana), is a form of dance music for Sicilian folk dance in Italy, which was popular during the 17th and 18th centuries. The genre is often characterised by dotted rhythms and gives a pastoral feel.
Humoresques (ユーモレスク)
Composer: Antonín Dvořák (ドヴォルザーク) Category: vivid (彩華) Keywords: childhood, celebration, resonation, desire, heart
This piece was written when Dvořák returned to his homeland Czechoslovakia (now The Czech Republic) during the summer of 1984. He had been working as the director of the Conservatory in New York in the United States between 1892 and 1895. The piece was originally composed for the piano, comprised of both Czech and American style melodies.
Later, Dvořák’s Humoresque №7 became the tune that can be heard on passenger train toilets in the United States — the singing begins with “Passengers will please refrain from flushing toilets while the train is standing…” (full song here).
Après un rêve (夢のあとに)
Composer: Gabriel Fauré (フォーレ) Category: gloomy (愁情) Keywords: sentiment, unrequited love, reputation, farewell, self, dream, quietude, reputation, longing
Après un rêve (After a dream in English) is one of the pieces from Trois mélodies that Fauré wrote for solo voice and piano between 1870 and 1877. The lyrics originates from an Italian poem that recounts a dream where one’s beloved can be seen. The following shows the translation in English by Richard Stokes:
In sleep made sweet by a vision of you I dreamed of happiness, fervent illusion, Your eyes were softer, your voice pure and ringing, You shone like a sky that was lit by the dawn; You called me and I departed the earth To flee with you toward the light, The heavens parted their clouds for us, We glimpsed unknown splendours, celestial fires. Alas, alas, sad awakening from dreams! I summon you, O night, give me back your delusions; Return, return in radiance, Return, O mysterious night!
In the game you could play this piece with a violin duet, and I really like the arrangement. Unfortunately I cannot find anything similar online, but this is another arrangement for 2 violins and piano.

The Supremes
They were not only the most commercially successful female group of the '60s but among the top 5 pop/rock/soul acts of that decade. Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard had a mature, glamorous demeanor that appealed equally to teens and adults. Beautiful, musically versatile, and unique, the original Supremes were America's sweethearts.

Edie Sedgwick
The original 'it girl' inspired Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol, and was the toast of the New York art scene with her bouffant blonde hair, vintage chandelier earrings and by wearing nothing but a leotard and tights.

The Designers
London's fashion sector existed until the 1960s in the shadow of the renowned Parisian couturiers. Paris served as the centre of global fashion, specialising in tailored clothing for a fantastically wealthy, elite group of women. But all of a sudden, as the youth market expanded, London started to lead the pace.
Thanks to a handful of up-and-coming young designers trained in the couture tradition, Paris has maintained its edge. Fashion firms like Saint Laurent, Cardin, and Courrèges discovered how to appeal to younger customers. They established ready-to-wear shops and concessions in department stores and produced "space age" clothing that was quickly imitated on the high street.
Tumblr media
The youth market was enormous in the US, and department stores made millions by importing London fashions. But retailers also recognised the boutique's potential. Local stores that catered to affluent customers by selling unique, cutting-edge designs thrived, notably in New York.
Tumblr media
Andrè Courrèges
André Courrèges
The French designer is best known for introducing the revolutionary space look- featuring white boots, goggles and boxy dresses designed in futuristic metallic shades, high shine fabrics such as PVC. His look was a blend of avant-garde geometry with sports classic driven by the youth culture.
Tumblr media
Pierre Cardin
Became famous for his brightly colored mini dresses. At the time his garments were "avant-garde" he like other designers at the time was heavily influenced by “Age" movement. His design style is mainly geometric shapes and colours.
Tumblr media
Paco Rabanne
The Spanish born designer made a name for himself in the 1960s with his space-age inspired fashions. He used materials such as metal, aluminum, plastic, plexi glass and even fiber optics. He was the first fashion designer to use black models in a catwalk show. As a result, he was almost thrown out of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, the governing body of Parisienne fashion.
Tumblr media
Givenchy
Responsible for the iconic little black dress that is essential to every woman's wardrobe and dressing the most elegant ladies of the time such as Audrey Hepburn, U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess Grace of Monaco; Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor and socialite Babe Paley.
Tumblr media
Yves Saint Laurent
Shift dresses and pea coats became YSL trademark styles. In 1965, colour blocking made its entrance in the world of fashion, when Yves Saint-Laurent introduced the colour block dress, inspired by the works of the famous painter, Piet Mondria.
Tumblr media
Emilio Pucci
Is best known for colorful psychedelic prints, especially for headscarves and dresses. In 1962 the world lost screen siren Marilyn Monroe. It's believed that she was buried in one of his dresses. Monroe was a huge fan of his work which can be clarified by the volume of Pucci garments in her personal collection displayed at Christies in 1999 prior to auction. Although an already established designer, Pucci saw an increase in sales in the sixties which he attributed to Miss Monroe and her popularity.
Tumblr media
The Birth of the Hippie
(1960-70s)
Originally used to designate beatniks who had settled in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, the word hipple is derived from the hipster. The hippies sought for alternate lifestyles. The majority of hippies cherished independence, nature, closeness, peace, generosity, and spirituality.
Tumblr media
Nudity was another expression of freedom that hippies used to set themselves apart from society's norms. They frequently stayed in parks or set up camp in the woods, discarding their belongings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All throughout, people wore tight-fitting bell-bottom jeans, preferably with flower patches and ankle fringe, T-shirts, or just a skimpy halter top. All of the peasant blouses complemented jeans. Anything handcrafted was considered an accessory, and many of them had peace symbols. Popular shirts and dresses had floral prints that stood for peace and love.
In general, people dressed in a way that they believed represented who they were as individuals and not only to follow the rules of fashion. For instance, both sexes wore their hair longer and it had an unruly, uncared-for appearance. This was in response to the mid-60s girl in the miniskirt who had neat, short hair.
Tumblr media
Woodstock 1969
At Woodstock over 250,000 hippies showed up to hear artists like Janis Joplin, The Who, Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers, and County Joe and the Fish. Woodstock was not just a music concert. It was a "profound religious experience."

The controversy of drugs
The most popular music of the time was psychedelic rock. Many of concerts were places for lippies to protest, socialise, dance, or take drugs. Drugs like marijuana and LSD were a big art of the hippy/counterculture movement. Using drugs made hippies feel like the were belling from mainstream society.

 。:°ஐ what a lucky sound !
✧. part one of lucky's discography ; 2014-2018
debuting on october 17, 2014 under the lucky one, a subsidiary of rainbow entertainment, lucky hit the scene with FRESH. the single immediately put the group on the map for pushing boundaries with a mature concept for the co-ed group. the group and company received lots of both backlash and praise. it was bittersweet for the members who were excited to have finally made their debut, but were receiving heavy amounts of hate, especially the girls. opinions were split on the concept, but most would agree that the catchy, retro-sounding beat was definitely fresh. though the success was enough to save rainbow from falling apart, it wasn’t enough to secure any wins for the group.
lucky continued to push the boundaries even further, coming back with don’t touch me, which only featured hiro and angel. if netizens thought fresh was mature, they were stunned to see the two members donning latex and money print swimsuits. this is their most hated comeback to date, the slew of slut-shaming and even calls for the video to be banned rocked the group, especially hiro, who received the brunt of the hate. to top it all off, the first reported sighting of hiro at a club was posted online, solidifying her as a pariah in the industry. though looking back, some call this era iconic, it is one that the group and the company try to ignore altogether, a stain on their career.
5 months later, han returned for a solo comeback, hoping to redeem the group after the debacle of the previous comeback with danger. he succeeded with flying colors, earning the group their first music show win and peaking at number 5 on the gaon weekly charts. danger received rave reviews, putting han’s vocal talent on proud display.
following the success of danger, sunnie and angel returned with so beautiful. the concept was completely different from what lucky had released so far both in sound and visuals, and was an instant hit, reaching number 1 on the gaon weekly charts. sunnie was praised for her vocal talent and visuals, a stark contrast to the hate she received from their debut track. the song earned the group 8 music show wins, the most they have earned for one comeback to date. this song is considered a classic among 4luvs and even received the ranking of 58 on billboard’s best kpop songs of the 2010s.
coming back as a full group once more, lucky released MINE. the hate train returned after the release of the music video portraying the group paired into two couples. rumors about dating within the group swirled, and the group had to shut them down at every promotion they participated in. a video of sunnie snapping at a variety show host emerged from this era, beginning her ‘bitchy’ demeanor that she later becomes known for. despite the publicity garnered by the rumors, this comeback didn’t chart and had 0 wins.
sunnie returned for her first solo comeback after the success of so beautiful with gashina, another chart topper. this song was also the first of lucky's to be partly self-produced. sunnie, with the help of in-house producer DAY 1, worked on both the lyrics and production of the song. the concept of this comeback was much more 'lucky' than so beautiful but still landing at number 1 on the charts. her persona as a bad bitch was beginning to take hold, and the popularity of this song and it’s choreography added on to her renown. this comeback garnered 5 music show wins and a lasting virality online.
the duo of angel and han released loose at the very end of 2016, introducing r&b to the sound of lucky. the self-production within the group continued with this comeback, and nearly every comeback since has had at least one self-written or produced song. though it won no awards, the album sold around 10,000 physical copies and the song became a favorite among 4luvs. this duo became a fan favorite with this comeback earning praise for both their talents and combined visuals.
lucky goes global as a full unit with BURN, their next comeback. although this comeback earns no music show wins, it puts lucky on an international stage, peaking at number 3 on the billboard charts and charting across the globe in breakout markets such as brazil, mexico, france, and spain. one of their more popular comebacks due to visuals and styling.
for the summer of 2017, hiro returns as a solo piece with another bright, upbeat, and risque comeback, lip/hip. despite the distaste for don’t touch me, the company decided to stick with the image hiro and the group had gained and opt for something fun for the summer. it was popular as a self-love anthem and has since become a staple in lucky’s discography, earning many covers over the years and always finding a place in performance setlists. there were still plenty who didn’t enjoy the racy concept of the styling and choreography or the upbeat song that leaned towards noisy, but comparatively this is a widely loved hiro comeback. though this comeback did significantly better than don’t touch me, it still won no music show awards.
the next comeback was a sunnie solo, noir. while it charted and sold fairly well, it was marked as a largely forgettable era with a short promotional period, especially in comparison to lip/hip and don’t stop. no music show wins came from this comeback and it lands in the middle for both popularity and success when it comes to lucky’s discography.
entering into 2018, angel and han teamed up again for the release of don’t stop, which peaked at number 3 on the billboard charts and made it onto 2 best k-pop songs of 2018 lists, but no music show wins. the styling and concept of this era was well loved by fans, the kind of blustery playboy vibe the pair was giving. while this comeback, and the pair’s previous, fit lucky’s mature concept, the boys received much more praise for the concept than hate as compared to their female members.
in september of 2018, the group released their first full album titled '777', with the title track NEW WAVE. the album release was the first act of the newly hired director of the lucky one subsidiary, jung jisoo, a former creative director under the company and director of multiple music videos by the group including gashina, loose, and noir. deciding once again to take risks with their concept and styling, lucky produced a track and an album that fulfilled their goal of pushing boundaries and solidifying them as icons in the industry whether loved or hated. the neon and electric colors combined with the retro vibe and 90s synth created a concept widely loved by fans and considered their most iconic ot4 comeback to date. while in the spotlight, this era also rang in a collection of scandals including rumors of angel being a player and a leaked video of a teenaged-hiro drunkenly mocking her role in akb48.

How to Become a Self-Taught Musician: A Beginner's Guide
Becoming a musician is a dream many people hold close, but it is a path that requires dedication, perseverance, and continuous growth. While some may have innate talent, turning that talent into a sustainable and successful career involves much more. Whether you’re just starting or looking to advance your skills, understanding the steps to become a musician can set you on the right path.
This guide will break down the essential steps, covering everything from mastering your instrument to finding opportunities in the music industry. With determination and the right guidance, you can transform your passion for music into a fulfilling career.
Step 1: Master Your Instrument
The first and most critical step toward becoming a musician is mastering your chosen instrument. Whether it’s your voice, the guitar, piano, or even a digital audio workstation (DAW) for production, you need to invest time in practice. This isn’t just about playing notes correctly but understanding the nuances of your instrument and how to create emotion through sound.
Formal Lessons vs. Self-Taught
For beginners, formal lessons can provide structured learning, enabling you to build strong foundational skills. However, many successful musicians are self-taught. The key is discipline. There are countless online resources, including video tutorials, music theory websites, and practice guides, that can help you develop.
Practice Daily
Consistent practice is the cornerstone of becoming a musician. Set aside dedicated time each day to work on your technique, improvisation, and songwriting. Remember, the goal is to progress, not just to play the same things you already know. Challenge yourself by learning new pieces or scales that push your abilities.
Step 2: Understand Music Theory
While many musicians rely solely on ear training, understanding music theory is an invaluable skill that can open doors for more complex composition and performance. Music theory will help you communicate with other musicians, read sheet music, and understand how different elements of music fit together.
Key Areas to Focus On:
Scales and Modes: Understanding major, minor, and modal scales gives you the foundation to create melodies and harmonies.
Chords and Progressions: Learning chord structures and how they progress will help you write songs and arrange music more effectively.
Rhythm and Timing: Whether you’re playing solo or with a band, understanding rhythm is key to maintaining the flow of a piece.
You don’t have to become a music theory expert overnight, but familiarizing yourself with these concepts will dramatically enhance your musical abilities.
Step 3: Develop a Unique Sound
One of the most challenging but essential steps in becoming a successful musician is developing your unique sound. This is what sets you apart from others in the industry. It involves exploring different genres, experimenting with your instrument, and combining various influences to create something original.
Find Your Influences
Every musician is inspired by those who came before them. Start by analyzing the artists you admire. What makes their music special? Is it their use of rhythm, melody, or perhaps their lyricism? By identifying these elements, you can draw inspiration and incorporate them into your own music while adding your personal flair.
Experiment with Styles
Don’t be afraid to experiment with multiple genres and styles. For instance, if you’re a guitarist, try playing jazz, blues, and classical pieces to broaden your range. If you’re a singer, explore different vocal techniques. Mixing genres can result in a unique sound that stands out.
Step 4: Build Your Repertoire
Once you’ve honed your skills and developed your sound, it’s time to build a repertoire. This means learning and memorizing a diverse set of songs that you can perform. If you’re aiming for live performances or studio sessions, having a strong repertoire will increase your credibility and make you more versatile.
Originals vs. Covers
While performing covers can help you gain an audience (especially at the start of your career), writing your own original songs is essential for establishing yourself as a serious musician. Your original work showcases your creativity and helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level.
Adaptability
Ensure that your repertoire includes various songs that fit different occasions. If you’re performing live, be prepared to adjust your setlist depending on the audience, whether it’s a small acoustic show or a large festival. Adaptability is key for musicians who want to perform consistently.
Step 5: Get Comfortable with Performing
Becoming a musician doesn’t just mean playing music; it also means performing in front of others. Stage presence is an important part of connecting with your audience and growing your fanbase.
Start Small
If you’re new to performing, start with smaller gigs, such as open mic nights, local festivals, or even online live streams. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are great for reaching a wider audience. Don’t forget to create a professional website that showcases your portfolio, including your songs, videos, and upcoming events.
Collaborations
Working with other artists can help you grow your network and introduce you to new audiences. Collaborating can also enhance your creativity by pushing you outside of your musical comfort zone.

Tips for Choosing the Right Acrodance Class for Your Child
Finding the perfect acrodance class for your child can be a thrilling yet challenging task. Acrodance blends the artistry of dance with the flexibility and strength of acrobatics, making it a fantastic choice for energetic and adventurous kids. Here are some tips to help you select the right acrodance class for your child:
Tumblr media
1. Assess Your Child’s Interests and Goals
Before enrolling your child in an acrodance class, consider their interests and goals. If they enjoy combining dance with acrobatics, acrodance is an excellent fit. However, if they’re more inclined towards hip hop or classical dance, you might explore other options like hip hop classes or ballet classes for kids.
2. Look for Qualified Instructors
The quality of instruction can make a huge difference in your child’s experience and progress. Ensure that the class is taught by qualified instructors with experience in acrodance. You might also consider other classes to see if they have instructors who are skilled in different dance forms, such as jazz dance classes or classical vocals.
3. Evaluate Class Structure and Size
A well-structured class with a manageable size is essential for effective learning. Smaller class sizes often mean more personalized attention. Check if the acrodance classes have a structured curriculum that includes warm-ups, skill-building, and choreography.
4. Check Facilities and Safety Measures
Ensure that the studio provides a safe environment with proper equipment and facilities. This is especially important for acrodance, which involves physical movements that require safety precautions. If you are considering a ballet school in Singapore, make sure the facilities are up to standard.
5. Visit the Studio and Observe a Class
Before making a decision, visit the studio and observe a class if possible. This will give you a sense of the class dynamics, teaching style, and how the instructor interacts with the students.
6. Consider the Class Schedule and Location
Choose a class that fits well with your family’s schedule and is conveniently located. Whether it’s acrodance or another form of dance, a suitable schedule will ensure consistency and commitment. You can also explore dance classes in Singapore that fit your requirements.
7. Seek Recommendations and Read Reviews
Talk to other parents or read online reviews to get insights into different acrodance programs. Personal recommendations can be incredibly valuable in finding a class that’s well-regarded by others.
Tumblr media
8. Inquire About Trial Classes
Many studios offer trial classes, which can be a great way to gauge if the class is a good fit for your child before committing long-term. This allows your child to experience the class and see if it aligns with their interests.
9. Evaluate Costs and Value
Consider the cost of the class and what it includes. Sometimes, higher costs may reflect better facilities or more experienced instructors. Ensure that you’re getting good value for the price you’re paying.
10. Check for Additional Opportunities
Find out if the studio offers additional opportunities such as performances or competitions. These can be great for boosting your child’s confidence and providing them with extra motivation.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can find an acrodance class that will not only meet your child’s needs but also nurture their passion for dance and acrobatics. If you’re looking for more options or have specific questions, you can always contact us for personalized advice.
For a broader range of dance classes, you might also explore options like ballet classes or hip hop classes. Each dance form has its unique benefits and can complement your child's acrodance training.

Seventeen: The K-pop Band Poised to Make History at UK Festival
Tumblr media
DaftTaengk, CC BY 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0, via Wikimedia Commons They are the biggest-selling act globally, and they're about to grace the Pyramid Stage. The headline act on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage this yea is a K-pop boy band boasting 13 members, who sold over 10 million albums last year. Despite K-pop's global success, the UK has been slow to embrace the genre. Bands like BTS, Blackpink, Stray Kids, and Aespa have gained traction, often through collaborations with Western artists like Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, or Coldplay. However, Seventeen stands out as they don't do collaborations and uniquely write and produce their own material. Now, they are set to make history as the first K-pop act on Glastonbury's main stage. The significance of this milestone is not lost on them. “There's a great sense of responsibility,” says Choi Seungcheol, also known as the band leader S Coups. “We’ll keep coming back to that feeling and do our best to prepare, so that we can blow everybody away… Not just our fans, but every other member of the audience.” This year, Glastonbury is moving further from its rock roots, reflecting evolving audience tastes. The Pyramid Stage will also feature Afrobeat icons Burna Boy and Ayra Starr, while pop star Dua Lipa and R&B sensation SZA will headline. Seventeen's performance is scheduled for Friday afternoon, a stark contrast to their usual late-night sets in Asia, but S Coups remains unfazed. “The time of day doesn't really matter to us,” he says. “It's actually even better that we’ll be performing in the afternoon because the audience can see us better under sunlight.” Their music, known for its upbeat and positive vibes, includes hits like "Shining Diamond" and "Very Nice," reminding fans that pop can be fun. Seventeen's journey began in the basement of South Korean entertainment company Pledis, where members endured a long and grueling apprenticeship lasting four to five years. Rapper Jeon Won-woo, known to fans as Wonwoo, was one of the first recruits in 2013, surviving multiple rounds of auditions documented in the online series Seventeen TV. The band faced a significant turning point during an eight-month hiatus when three members were replaced. S Coups recalls, “Our deal was pushed back a little and Woozi, one of our members, thought we could debut earlier than planned if we made our own music.” Woozi, a classically-trained musician, co-wrote and produced most of their songs, inspiring other members to learn songwriting and lyric-making. “Being engaged in our creative process goes a long way towards making our music more authentic. We take great pride in it,” says S Coups. Despite the intense training and initial struggles, Seventeen's debut EP, "17 Carat," was released in May 2016. The group, consisting of S Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino, is divided into vocal, hip-hop, and dance teams. Their name represents this tripartite setup: 13 people + 3 units + 1 band = 17. S Coups, the oldest member and leader, approaches his role with humility. “I try to listen to what every member has to say and have everybody aligned on the same path,” he says. “My goal is to make sure we can last as long as possible, so we can make as much music as possible.” Woozi oversees music production, and Hoshi leads choreography, while each member contributes uniquely to the band’s dynamic. Seventeen's hard work and dedication have paid off. Their sound has evolved from the pop of "Adore U" to the broody EDM of "Don't Wanna Cry" and the genre-hopping exuberance of "Left & Right." Their recent mini-album "FML" includes the introspective title track and the upbeat celebration "Super." "I'm getting so numb to this life that it feels like I'm shrinking away,” sang The8, reflecting on the band's mindset during its creation. "But when we honestly, openly talk about our feelings, it really helps to get rid of the negativity," says Wonwoo. Seventeen's success is evident with "FML" being the biggest-selling record of 2023, selling over 6.3 million copies. To introduce new fans to their music, they have released a 33-track compilation, "17 Is Right Here," featuring all their singles and a new track, "Maestro." Looking ahead, Seventeen aims to expand their audience further with a world tour planned for the end of the year. “We’d like to reach fans in as many countries as possible because we don't really get to see them that often in person,” says S Coups. “I still believe that we have a long way to go and we want to become even more successful.” Read the full article
