CLAYTON KOVACS
Age: Twenty Nine Occupation: Detective with the NOPD Gender & Pronouns: Male & He/Him Length of time in NOLA: Twenty Nine Years Faceclaim: Casey Deidrick
A DECREE IN HISTORY
Life was never meant to be easy, but it was never meant to be quite this hard either. Growing up in the big easy could have been an idyllic beginning for Clay Kovacs. He had the picture perfect family; both parents, three kids, and a dog living in their modest walk-up apartment over the restaurant the family owned. The restaurant, aptly named Cafe Kovacs, had been in the family since his grandfather had started the business in the sixties and it truly was a family affair, with all of the siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles working various shifts. The one thing that was a guarantee growing up was that they were always strapped for cash. Most of the spare money went back into the business, so there was little left over for both Clay and his younger sisters Hanna and Mila. At the time though, they didn’t care because they all had each other; but sadly that was not to last. It all changed for him when he was thirteen years old. Being the older sibling, he was put in charge of the younger two. Tasked with the chore of grabbing groceries from the local market, the three Russo siblings had set out to get the essentials with little issue. On their way home, Mila had dropped her bag by accident, causing the eggs inside to crack. Instead of walking home with cracked eggs, Clay told Hanna to stay put while they went back a few blocks to replace the bag. Once they came back to the spot Hanna had been sitting, a short stoop with a tree shading it from the sun, she was gone. Annoyed at first, Clay called out for her and walked with his remaining little sister to try and find where she’d run off to. It soon became apparent that she was nowhere to be found and now he had the horrific task of telling his parents that he’d lost his sister.
No one had any idea of where Hanna Kovacs had gone, or who may have taken her as it was quickly determined to have to be a kidnapping. This was 2002 and there were security and street cameras, but they weren’t as prevalent as they would become later. On video, Hanna was seen talking to a tall figure wearing a dark red hoodie before going willingly with the person; who’s face was sadly never seen. The person must have said something to the little girl to convince her that she should leave with them. Clay was never supposed to see that video, but he’d managed to sneak a peek at the TV during a brief newscast while at his grandmother’s house and that image was seared in his brain ever since. Days went by, then months, then years and still nobody had seen or heard of anything having to do with Hanna’s kidnapping. At first, Clay would spend his time after school physically searching, but then as time went by and the search radius grew too large, he surfed the internet for signs of his sister. He couldn’t help but feel responsible. If he had just taken her along with him to get those damn eggs, none of this would’ve happened. Getting through school was a chore, trying to deal with the guilt he felt on top of the work that school entailed, but he graduated by the skin of his teeth.
After years passed by, it became a little easier to live life as the fresh pain of losing his sister grew into a numbness he’d learned to manage, but that didn’t mean he’d given up. He went to LSU and eventually graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice, all with the goal of trying to help people never feel like he had. Once he’d graduated, he applied to the NOPD Police Academy, blowing through the requirements with a single-mindedness that was almost unbelievable to witness. He worked the next few years as a police officer with the NOPD, eventually working his way up to being a detective. Now he would really be able to help people in need, like his family had been. Life faded into a sense of normalcy that Clay got used to. He had his job, dated, and tried to live his life despite the tragedy that had befallen him. But his mistakes would again rise up and try to destroy everything he had. One night after going out with some of his fellow officer friends, he was driving home after having a little bit too much to drink. He wasn’t blackout drunk and so he thought he’d be fine to drive the ten blocks back to his apartment. Making a stupid decision, he sped through a light that had changed from yellow to red just a few moments before. He hadn’t seen the jogger that had already begun to cross the street before clipping him with his car. Realizing that he’d just royally fucked up, he sped off while knowing that there had been no one around this early in the morning in the outskirts.
After making another colossal mistake that could’ve cost someone else their life, Clay threw himself into work to try to distract from reality, but when he had down time he would look into the police report from his hit and run, finding the information about the person he’d hit. Erik Sanders, thirty five, a contractor from the area with two kids and a wife. The guy had spent a month in the hospital fixing his shattered right leg, and was now on disability. Clay knew that he’d ruined this guy’s life, but he couldn’t bring himself to turn himself in. He’d lose classified document access if he was charged with any crime, and he wouldn’t be able to help find his sister, so he was determined that he would find another way to help him, but keep his own life intact as well. That came in the form of sending cash to the Sanders residence, addressed to them from an ‘anonymous’ helper. If only they knew how far from the truth that was. As the year went by, he found it harder and harder to keep sending the amount of money he felt that they deserved, but an opportunity arose from bending his morals completely. Looking the other way in situations where normally he would arrest criminals, or other ‘dirty’ moves. It was completely new for him and it made him sick to his stomach to see how far he’d fallen, but it was either this or jail himself.

REVIEW
All We Buried by Elena Taylor
Sheriff Bet Rivers Mystery #1
Excellent introduction to a new series by a new-to-me author that I will definitely want to follow in this series and perhaps any book she might write. This book had me guessing and caring and hoping all would work out as Sheriff Elizabeth “Bet” Rivers as she worked to uncover the mystery of who murdered Jane Doe.
What I liked: * The writing and how it gradually allowed me to know the characters and eventually solve the case (although I did read ahead to find out because – that’s what I di)
* Bet: intelligent, capable, wise, considering options for her future, has an interesting backstory that comes out over the course of the book, strong, resilient, and likable
* Schweitzer: Anatolian Shepherd, originally belonged to Bet’s father but becoming hers more and more – great dog!
* The history of the small town and how it impacted the community and the specific murder investigation
* The potential murderers and how they were presented and eventually exonerated…or not.
* Alma: a bit crusty but perfect at the front desk at the sheriff’s office
* Clayton: part-time deputy that may become full-time in the future has wicked mad skills that would be useful as a policeman.
* The undercurrents related to the upcoming election for sheriff
* That there was more than a murder involved
* That most of the characters were more than what I expected them to be
* The potential for romance for bet hinted at in the book.
* The flashbacks Bet had and how they played into the mystery
* That all the threads were tied up at the end of the story
* Reading the last page and feeling satisfied while wanting to read more.
 What I didn’t like:
* The baddie…wow…just WOW
* Having to say goodbye and now wait for book two to be published.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 5 Stars
    BLURB
For fans of Julia Keller and Sheena Kamal, All We Buried disturbs the long-sleeping secrets of a small Washington state mountain town. Deep in the woods surrounding the Cascade mountain range, a canvas-wrapped body floats in a lake, right in Elizabeth "Bet" Rivers's jurisdiction. Bet has been sitting as interim sheriff of Collier after her father's--the previous sheriff's--death six months ago. Everyone knows everyone in a town like Collier. She has made it her duty to protect the people she's come to see as family. And she intends to hold her title in the upcoming election, but she's never worked a murder investigation on her own before and her opponent and deputy, Dale Kovac, isn't going down without a fight. Upon unwrapping the corpse, Bet discovers the woman is from out of town. Without an identification, the case grows that much more puzzling. Determined to prove herself worthy, however, Bet must confront the warped history of Collier. The more she learns, the more she realizes she doesn't know the townspeople of Collier as well as she thought, and nothing can prepare her for what she is about to discover.

Watchmen Sequel Focused on Rorschach Coming From DC
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Did you think the continued explorations of the Watchmen universe were going to end with Dr. Manhattan and Superman explaining the DC Metaverse in the pages of Doomsday Clock or Angela Abar taking that step in HBO’s Watchmen TV series? Certainly not. And certainly not in a world that is somehow more confused and even more disordered than the one into which the original Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons was published in 1986.
While the HBO TV series was a true sequel to the Moore and Gibbons masterwork, the comic book Doomsday Clock by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank was more of an expansion, exploring what it would mean if the metaphorical influence of Watchmen on the comic book industry was made literal with Dr. Manhattan altering the course of events of the DC Universe itself. But the latest use of Moore and Gibbons’ ideas is focused on one of its most controversial (and frequently misunderstood and misinterpreted) characters: Rorschach.
Rorschach is a 12-issue maxiseries from Tom King (no stranger to the 12 issue maxiseries format thanks to his work on the stunning Mister Miracle) and Jorge Fornés (possibly the best Batman artist of the last few years). Rorschach will be released as part of DC’s Black Label imprint, with the first issue arriving in October…which is appropriate, as the majority of the original series takes place during that month, and HBO’s Watchmen perhaps coincidentally also dropped there.
Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of DC Comics:
It’s been 35 years since Ozymandias was exposed for dropping a giant telepathic squid on New York City, killing thousands and ending the public’s trust in heroes once and for all. The Minutemen are gone; only their memory lives on. Especially the infamy of Rorschach, who has become a cultural icon since Dr. Manhattan turned him to dust.
Rorschach may have spoken truth, but he wasn’t a hero.
So what does it mean when Rorschach reappears as part of a pair of assassins trying to kill the first candidate to oppose President Robert Redford in decades? Follow one determined detective as he walks backward in time, uncovering the identities and motives of the would-be killers, taking him deep into a dark conspiracy of alien invasions, disgraced do-gooders, mystical visions, and yes, comic books.
“Like the HBO Watchmen show and very much like the original ‘86 Watchmen, this is a very political work.” Tom King said in a statement. “It’s an angry work. We’re so angry all the time now. We have to do something with that anger. It’s called Rorschach not because of the character Rorschach, but because what you see in these characters tells you more about yourself than about them.”
Rorschach was based on Steve Ditko’s The Question, a character who was often a conduit for Ditko’s own fascination with objectivist philosophy. Rorschach took that characteristic to its logical extreme, and the character has been adopted by certain segments of the fandom as the true “hero” of a story with no true heroes. The HBO series played with this by turning Rorschach’s legacy into one of white supremacist violence.
It’s not entirely clear from the above synopsis if this is the same Rorschach who was introduced in the pages of Doomsday Clock. That character was Reggie Long, the son of the therapist who had tried to treat Walter Kovacs, the original Rorschach. Long had been damaged by the psychic squid attack on New York City and the subsequent death of his parents, taking up the mantle of the infamous vigilante. However, at the conclusion of Doomsday Clock, Long appeared to be done with the mask. But as we saw in HBO’s Watchmen, Kovacs’ masked identity was influential in other corners of society, so his appearance here doesn’t have to be tied to any existing character.
Check out these preview images, which are all refreshingly free of Watchmen‘s trademark nine panel grid.
Rorschach #1 by Tom King, Jorge Fornés, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles, will be released on Oct. 13. The first entry in Rorschach’s Journal in the original comic story was Oct. 12. That’s pretty cool.
