What do you think the potions taste like? (You can do a handful you don't gotta do all of them)

I was honestly going to write something about this!!! This is the perfect excuse for me to finally finish the list that I had in my drafts 🤣 I also added what happens to a user if they drink any of these potions, and their physical sensations!

Awkward/Mundane/Thick: Depending on what main starting ingredient used (Nether wart, sugar, etc), it usually ends up just tasting like tainted water. It usually isn’t really appetizing, but it at least has no negative effects on the user who drank it.

Healing: Upon drinking it, the user will notice that it tastes like VERY rich watermelon, with very little notes of water in it. Soon, a warm sensation takes over their entire body, along with any wounds on them now immediately healing themselves by quickly growing new flesh or fixing broken blood vessels. The sensation is best compared to the feeling of being smothered by a recently heated up blanket, except it’s felt in your insides, not on your skin.

Fire Resistance: The flavor is best said to be quite citrusy, and the consistency of the liquid is more akin to a smoothie due to the creamy texture of using magma creme. After consuming it, the user will suddenly feel extreme heat in their body, easily exceeding 98°F. Ironically, the negative effects of exceeding that body temperature will not appear, and not even sweating will occur. It is still quite uncomfortable to be physically so hot, but if you’re using this potion in the first place, it’s safe to say you’re directly exposing yourself to even more intense temperatures, so the fever-like heat pales in comparison.

Regeneration: Basically the same to the physical sensation and effects of the Potion of Healing, but it tastes more like lukewarm salt water instead of the pure and strong tasting watermelon flavor. The healing factor is lightly longer as well, along with the user feeling more energized and upbeat.

Strength: As blaze powder is the main ingredient in this potion, it tastes like metal flakes mixed with hot water. It is not very tasty at all, and it even tastes like old copper, depending on who’s opinion you get. After drinking it, it is common to see a user suddenly tremble as more defined muscle mass develops across their entire body. This is more of a cosmetic effect, as the potion’s effect seems to focus more on arm strength than leg or core body strength, even though muscle mass still grows in those areas. When the potion wears off, the user will essentially deflate back to normal, implying that the suddenly gained muscle mass is akin to water weight.

Swiftness: Sugar water. It’s literally just sugar water. It literally makes it’s user run faster by making them develop a unnaturally high sugar rush, but there is no negative effect such as crashing when it wears off thankfully.

Night Vision: A very ‘filling’ potion, as it tends to make the user feel physically full after drinking it, due to how rich the flavor of carrot it is in it. It too is also quite thick, but more similar to jam than a smoothie. After drinking it, the user’s eyes will severely dilate, along with being incredibly reflective, even in lowlight situations. It is slightly disorienting when it wears off, as their vision will revert back to the way it should be.

Invisibility: Probably one of the more ‘acquired taste’ potions, due to fermented spider eyes being it’s main ingredient. It’s physically quite chunky, and just straight up tastes like rotten blood mixed with yeasty wine. Not only the flavor is intensely vile, but the effect inflicted on it’s user can actually cause some to pass out from the overwhelming sensation. A sharp cold chill will fully envelop it’s user, as it basically mutates their entire body to come off as invisible to any living being. Sometimes the frostbite-like sensation is so severe, some users have suffered heart attacks, panic attacks, or any other sort of medical emergency as the transformation takes place. Then again, this is a potion who’s effect is so potent that it ‘jumps’ across the user’s body to also transform their clothes into being invisible. Only users who have endured turning invisible by other methods (being shot by a arrow of invisibility or being cursed by a Illusioner for example) can mentally and physically handle drinking such a dreadful potion.

Water Breathing: One of the most popular potions out there, due to it’s extreme viability in water biomes, it of course uses a oceanic fish for it’s main ingredient. However since it uses pufferfish instead of cod or tropical fish, the flavor tastes like stripped clean pufferfish meat that was dunked in a bucket of warm saltwater. At least the water-heavy nature of this potion means it goes down quickly, and after numerous uses, a user can get used to the weird ‘fishy’ taste. It too temporarily mutates the user’s body by modifying their lungs to be able to process water, along with making small gills form on the sides of their neck. The pain is minor when this occurs, and isn’t as extremely overbearing when compared to the Potion of Invisibility. The augmented lungs and gills fade away after the potion wears off.

Leaping: Similar to the ‘meat being dunked in water’ taste the Potion of Water Breathing has, this potion instead tastes like rabbit meat that marinated in chilled freshwater. Similar to how the Potion of Strength can physically mutate the user’s muscle mass, this one makes the user’s legs more slender but still muscular, allowing them to have a increased jump height. Trembling is more minimal, as it does not effect the user’s entire body.

Slow falling: Certainty one of the more odder potions, due to both it’s main ingredient and it’s effect. The phantom membrane used in it is quite leathery, but also equally quite powdery when it’s processed. The flavor is hard to pin down, but it’s generally agreed upon it’s users to taste along the lines of chalk mixed with slightly salty water. It seems like no physical transformation occurs to the user’s body, and instead they’re ‘enveloped’ by a aura that allows them to gracefully fall to the ground if they fell from a tall height. The slightly visible aura fades away when the potion wears off.

Poison: Nobody in their right mind would willingly consume this potion, but if one were forced to drink it, it just tastes like blood and bile. Almost immediately after drinking it, it will immediately poison it’s user and make them suffer intense sharp pain in their insides, and even some nausea.

Weakness: Having nearly the same disgusting taste as the Potion of Invisibility, except it of course doesn’t turn it’s user invisible. It instead makes them feel fatigued, as they quickly become physically gaunt and tired. Any body mass that got effected by this potion is partially wasted away by sudden muscle atrophy and is permanently lost, even after the potion wears off. Because of this, it’s quite dangerous to be afflicted by it, especially after multiple uses in a row.

Harming: It too has the exact same taste of the Potion of Weakness, except it’s effect is ABSOLUTELY GUT WRENCHING. Upon drinking it, it’s user will instantly double over in complete agony, as their guts are literally ravaged from the inside. Drinking this is akin to drinking pure acid, especially as it’s main side effect is making it’s user vomit blood profusely, along with internal bleeding. It is a highly fatal potion, and should NOT be drunk at all costs.

Slowness: At this point, you should already know that any potion that uses a spider eye as it’s base ingredient will probably taste disgusting. This potion is thankfully one of the ‘less’ painful ones in the whole series that uses spider eyes, as it doesn’t cause extreme internal pain or damage to it’s user. It instead makes them physically bloated and fatigued, which in turn makes it uncomfortable to them to walk around. The bloating passes away when it wears off, but can leave it’s user still feel quite queasy and even sleepy.

Turtle Master: One of the ‘newer’ potions to be made, it features a very unorthodox base ingredient, a turtle shell. It tastes like a mixture of turtle meat and keratin, which makes it feel starchy and salty. It’s kinda..... chicken flavored but not in a good way, but at least in terms of texture, it goes down easy as it’s very watery. As one of the primary effects is slowness, the user will experience bloating, but the additional effect of resistance will cause the user’s skin to thicken up and become quite leathery, in order to become more protected. The change to the user’s skin will fade away, but it’s recommended to slather some lotion on, to potentially avoid having some of the affected skin still partially retaining it’s leatheriness.

i never really write in this verse, but is on The Brain(TM) so some quick pursuant-endgame verse hcs:

magma / aqua are on the kill-on-sight list. he fucked around with both of them prior to seizing control of hoenn, he doesn’t need them undermining his plans as revenge. grunts / admins are all fair game, and after a certain point, he tries to hunt archie and maxie down himself when peons fail.

atticus bounces between stupid aggressive and calm as can be. the power gets to his head to a point, and there are moments where it shows---typically in his eagerness to fight, and lack of restraint in high emotion circumstances. he’s otherwise decent at keeping it together.

spends most of his time in ever grande. booting steven from the throne, he took on the champion’s responsibilities, even if a touch modified.

league members are replaced by his own hand-picked team members. the league functions as normal, but is closely watched.

devon corp. is likewise given the boot. king enterprises dominates the market.

the mt. chimney and lilycove bases for magma and aqua respectively are cleaned out and taken over for pursuant.

tigris and panthera, his fellow leaders, become far more public in their appearances and help in keeping hoenn under a tight leash.

the former league? either dead, or legitimately missing, hiding away from atticus and pursuant. the status of steven is unknown, much to atticus’ chagrin. the last person who saw him was atticus himself, engaging him in aerial combat. atticus never had the opportunity to deal a final blow---in the final moments, he recalls a blinding light, and when he and his noivern, sargon, recovered from it, steven and his skarmory had vanished.

he makes his claims clear with any other organization thinking of trekking into hoenn territory. rocket has already been sent scattering a handful of times when trying to venture to hoenn’s outlying islands.

36. The Dormant Forge (chapter 3 - Hot Crib 3/5 ) part 8. Stories of Dreams.

Approaching the steaming ridge, Regina changed into her Fairy-Robes. The Fairy King had modified them, to honour Regina’s union with Wyverndor. She glittered like garnet. Her protective garbs were fitted, with long sleeves, gloves, slim calf boots, and a bustle. Workplace appropriate, tailored, and protective against spell and sword. They even brought out Wyvern, and Regina’s adornments of bronze thorns. She could almost be mistaken for a proper lady.

When Regina reached the top of the ridge, she saw a round field of magma. There looked like ten paths radiating from a center mound, akin to Tiberius Gate. Reggie chose one to walk down, and slowly felt the heat through her protective clothes; The heat of a kiln, was nothing compared to the furnace she entered. Regina hastened up the rocks, to a central house, and hastily entered. She then looked around, and noted the acclimatizing spell about the beams. The house seemed to have runes within the grout, between the cedar. Everything had chestnut dragon varnish as well. The cabin only became more curious, given its tidiness; Even the low bed, covered with felt and fur, looked clean and untouched. There was a bedroom, kitchen, washroom, and living room; None with doors. There was a fireplace, and a cellar downstairs. On hooks, were little crafted medallions of colourful beads and feathers. It was cozy, yet liminal; Like the owner would return any moment.

Out the window, was the actual forge; An adjacent shack, closer to the lava. It rumbled whispered with the fey within, and resting on its banks of scorched earth. The forge breathed with fey of fire, larger then she’d ever seen. Regina didn’t know what she was expecting, but it wasn’t this.

Wyvern came out of Reggie’s necklace, and started unpacking. Regina summoned her things from home; hopefully letting her family know she’d arrived at her destination. Wyvern was soon distracted, however. She curiously examined the desk in the main room. The rough desk had a lock holding its key, which Wyvern turned. The drawer popped open, reveling a sooty purple letter. The soft noise caught Reggie’s attention.

“Neat. I didn’t notice that desk. It’ll be perfect for journaling and notes.” She smiled. Wyvern pulled out the letter, and handed it to Regina; She couldn’t read, but wanted to know why such a normal object was hidden. The letter had the Monafyra house crest on it; A crescent holding flames and stars.

“This thing looks months old, but it must be centuries… This cabin is too inhospitable for anyone other then a mage to reach.” Reggie said, opening it:

 ‘Dear mage,

This is my father, Helrem Monafyra’s, summer forge. He crafted it well, but used it less and less as he got old. The invention of wizardry, was actually in our long-gone mountain home. He asked his journals be given to my brother Tiberius, in the Grand West of Anglia. Only his childhood records remain here. I was too sad to touch them upon father’s death.

Father died surrounded by love, having had a fulfilling life. He never got to say goodbye to this place, but I think he was ok with that. He trusted the future, unlike me.

I ask you be its custodian; Use the forge, and make wonderful things. Love the fey, and life itself.

May you have a Happily Ever After,

 “Oh, that’s the Seer whose journals inspired Morgan. I guess this explains how he got his hands on the original copies of Helrem’s work.” Reggie concluded. She then felt heavy, sitting at that desk. This empty house was a home, that once held childhood memories. This place meant something to someone. Not just a dream, but a lifetime. Now all that was hers.

The next day, Reggie looked around for the gate’s center; She still had to open it. It would be a round compass diagram, with runes in the directions of the Beast King’s; The Table of Fours, that show all magic correlations. Regina thought something so recognizable would be obvious. But it wasn’t in the forge, nor in the cabin. Reggie had worked hard to be fit enough for crafting, but she was still gasping in the heat. She shuddered at the thought of accidentally forgetting her Fairy-Robes, before leaving the house. Wyvern had endless stamina, but her search was equally fruitless. Regina, stared across liquid rock, that drakes splashed and nymphs danced. She fell to her knees screaming to the sky.

“This keeps happening! We should just go to the pub! I should’ve lied to the conductor! Why did I think for a minute, that this goal would be attainable!?” Reggie sobbed.

“The Pub! Good idea! Maybe if we stand on the ridge, we’ll get a better view for searching. I’ll get the binoculars!” Wyvern signed, running into the cabin. A moment later, and Regina staggered behind her, as they took an east path to the ridge, facing the mountains.

“Why East, Wyvern? The town is South.” Reggie said, taking the binoculars. She scanned across the pools: Screaming fire wildlings and coal unicorns resting on the lava banks. Fountains of magma bubbled up, as a fire basilisk swam about. The fey were excited to see a mage. But to Reggie, everything was hues of fire and tar. Wyvern stood a blue beacon upon the ridge.

“I don’t see anything.” Reggie sighed; Her eyes were sore. Wyvern took the binoculars like a giddy child. Reggie still wanted to go into town for food. She had one Northland Knot left; She could alchemize water, but not snacks. Wyverndor was looking out into town with the binoculars, and Reggie snatched them back. She looked across the large bowl of fire once more, as the sun set. She shielded her eyes to see what looked like an inukshuk on the West ridge. Regina skimmed the ridge further. Rocks had fallen over, and some still stacked. That tradition is from the Far North, not Northlands; Helrem must have made them, being from across the boarder. Reggie continued, to see a toppled pile facing North-East, with the Tree Kingdom Rune. She couldn’t find the gate, because she was in it. The lava pit was the gate. The gate was broken. She needed to manually put up the ten inukshuks, in exactly the right directions, to fix it before she could open it.

“You want to eat, dance, drink, and bed together? This looks like a tomorrow problem.” Regina said, looking into the middle distance. They’d spent the whole meeting fey and running around, and she wanted nothing to do with this place.

“Are you sure? I can help lift, being really strong like father.” Wyvern gestured.

“Are you sure? The Northland is known for producing and eating the most potatoes per capita. Brought from far off lands, just before they started to consider the meat of children.”

“Oh, really? Well, maybe I can make an exception; Be young and stupid with you, this one time.” Wyvern beamed. Pomme de tarre: Gets goblins, gnomes, giants, trolls, and gargoyles, every time.

Fey can’t get drunk. They are made of magic, and not easily effected by the material. The evening consisted of Wyvern being an excellent partner, by watching her rowdy wife mingle. They danced, and petted some fine plaids. Regina asked people what they wanted from her, as their new local magic user. However, she wouldn’t remember due to ale. Either by brew or laughter, the people seemed to be less weary of Regina’s mage title. A few more pints, and people gasped at all the crystals Wyvern could make her human form into. When Reggie fell off a table dancing, Wyvern paid for the roast potatoes and drinks, then walked her One-and-only ‘home’ to ‘bed’.

At dawn, Regina woke with a pounding head, and Wyvern laying across her. Her human form felt perfectly normal, in spite of looking like minerals: Heart beating, warm, and soft. Even her straight hair fell perfectly, and Wyvern chose to comprise of diamond. The mourning light shone through the window, making her glow. After a moment, Reggie nudged Wyvern awake.

“So, what do the locals want? I asked them, right?” Reggie said, rubbing her head.

“Telling the fey to respect everyone’s sleep, I think? They have a point. My cousins made a racket every two hours, waking me; And I sleep like a rock.” Wyvern gesticulated. “Did you know this place even has Tree-Children?! Flaming plants Reggie!” she flailed.

“Yeah. Pretty neat, I guess.” Regina groaned.

“Where’s your enthusiasm? We have to heft rocks, and convince the meandering consciousness of my brethren to do something! While hung-over!” Wyvern continued, flushing pyrope.

“Oh shit. I forgot…” Reggie gasped. Then she got an idea. “If we fix the rocks, maybe we can bribe the fey; I won’t open the gate, for them to go home, until they respect bedtime!”

“You’re a mage; Opening the gate isn’t a bribe, it’s your job. Maybe just ask them nicely? After fixing the inukshuks, that is.” Wyvern proposed. Reggie folded before Wyvern’s whims. She agreed, and got some dishes from a box her mother packed. Maybe some mourning tea would help. Upon starting the kettle, and reaching into the box, Regina pulled out a radio; The same model as her mothers. The instructions were in Modern Francian. While the water boiled, Reggie fiddled with the nobs to find a channel, only to receive white noise at every frequency. Unease rippled through her, as she searched for the feeling of home; Trying to procrastinate her new life’s challenges. Regina understood now, why her mother liked hearing from home. Something comfortingly familiar, when such things are so far away. Reggie listlessly left the red radio on the desk, with her journals, on the way out to stack stones.

ElitePets is a highly customisable inventory pets plugin. Using this plugin you can create your own pets with custom effects. Almost everything is configurable all the way down to what noise the pets make. Mickerson is a special pet that is hard to find. Rarely found in chests above cloud level, or underneath the sea level, mickerson is one of those barely useful pets. Doesn't really do a lot, just makes you look awesome. May I suggest getting a juggernaut pet? Or maybe a black hole pet, or a purplicious cow pet? Those are also pets with cool names, but they are very useful to you and your.

Inventory Pets is a mod created by Purplicious_Cow. It adds many various 'pets' that reside in the player's inventory, based off of mobs, blocks, items and other things.

Most pets can be crafted, but certain 'Legendary' pets (the name being a reference to Pokémon) can only be found in Inventory Pets' dungeons. Inventory Pets has four dungeons: the Sky Dungeon, the Sea Cave, the Underground Dungeon and the Treetop.

Pets eat. Different pets will eat different items in the users' inventory, and at different rates; some pets will eat after a certain amount of uses, or at certain iterations of time. Food can be stored in a Feed Bag. Clicking N (per default) with a pet in hand allows the user to rename it.

To install:

Download the version of the release.

Drop the phar file in the plugins folder of your server.

Restart the server, and enjoy.

Translation

BlockPets has a language system so everybody can use the plugin in the language they prefer. You can change language to one of the available languages in the config.yml. Of course, not every language file exists. If you want to help translate, don't hesitate to add a new file and copy the english translations in it, then translate them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Commands and Permissions

BlockPets has permissions for every pet and command, to wall off the permissions for players but still allow them to have at least some way to spawn pets. The most up to date list of permissions can be found in the plugin.yml file

BlockPets contains a hand full of commands to modify, create and remove pets. These commands can be found using the /pet <help> command. This command will list all BlockPets commands, and can show other information.

Throne of Night Theory Builds Part 4: The Deathless Golem Wielder of Book 3 *updated*

It’s an interesting feeling of nostalgia. The last time I even remotely talked about Throne of Night on here was 2018, but I hadn’t discussed anything seriously since 2017, and only then it was to answer a question regarding the AP. Before that, it was 2016 to discuss a module I found online, and how to convert it from AD&D 2e to Pathfinder 1e so that some people could actually finish the adventure path with some grace and dignity, and without spending money they likely wouldn’t be seeing again. I think all of us are at least somewhat bitter over the experience.

For those of us who had supported the Kickstarter, July 2015 saw an update that essentially gave us a very basic summary on books 3 through 6, but not the extra adventure with the half-god prince. That’s okay though as I have done my own version of that.

In the update it talks about the final encounters for books 3 and 4. Book 5 is more vague about what the final encounter is, but the picture makes you think it’s a mob of aboleths. Book 6 shows a star spawn of Cthulhu, and considering it’s a CR 20, that seems like enough of a challenge by itself, but it’s possible that the party is also supposed to fight a pleroma aeon, which is also a CR 20. It’s unsure whether you do that all at once, or back-to-back, as the aeon does seem to have its own lair. Considering Way of the Wicked had the party fight an encounter that was equivalent to a CR 24, I’m going to assume there’s a few templates on that star spawn to make it a CR 23 (if you’re fighting it by yourself). Personally, I’d go with mythic Invincible template, then Fighter Creature simple template, and finally advance the HD until it had enough hp to rival a CR 23. If that was too weak for your group, then adding mythic Agile might be the way to go.

But I digress. I made this update because I’ve been looking over the July update and contemplating “what would these be?” to an almost unhealthy degree when I should be doing way more productive things. Like finish writing race books or prepping for PFS. But no, I’m researching spells and builds, and trying to come up with builds and tactics for these particular encounters.

Before I showcase the builds, I just want to emphasize that all images shared here were done by the forever fantastic and amazingly talented Michael D. Clarke, aka SpiralMagus.

Book 3′s write-up discusses the party coming into contact with a morrigna. The picture shows her, her spider swarm, and a large tarantula? behind her. She is searching for a dwarf that has managed to achieve immortality.

EDIT: I looked into it further, and it was after the dwarf made a dark pact with a deep dragon, and a good portion of the encounters in Book 3 are the offspring of the “deadless” king and the deep dragon. Even further, the king is a “dragon king”. That means he’s got a draconic bloodline of some kind. Likely magma or underworld, but it’s kept vague. Probably because it’s easier to just use red dragon bloodline for the same effect and not have to worry about non-OGL sources. However, if it’s the full plated creature that I found, especially since the dragon dwarf king is controlling the cannon golem, that definitely limits how it gets those bloodlines. And, unfortunately, this likely means a feat tax.

As for the golem control rod, there was an item back in 3.X that did this, and was a rod found in the Arms and Equipment Guide. It used dominate monster back then. Nowadays, we have control construct from Ultimate Magic. The easiest way to go about it is to say that the rod is a morningstar with the power of the amulet of construct control. This keeps it in with other Pathfinder 1e products.

I looked into it, and it seemed too cheap to make him a lich, and looking into how each undead comes into being, I finally decided upon the graveknight. They fuse with their armor after dying in some horrible way that involves an element (typically fire). Michael had been drawing a lot of black fire in his pictures, and it seemed rather fitting that it would likely be that he would die in that fashion. Also, corrupted? Sounds like someone having fallen from grace and embraced evil. Antipaladin. It continues saying that he wields a deadly weapon of dwarven design, and then shows a picture of a cannon golem. In Way of the Wicked, this exact place in Book 3 was a CR 16 encounter so I mimicked it. The former king is a CR 13 as the golem is a CR 15.

For its CR, the antipaladin is lacking in armor, but hopefully it’s ability to heal itself (and possibly do damage to others), will be enough to offset lower AC.

Note that the armored being in the picture below may not be the king (at least it’s not said he is or isn’t), but it’s how I assume he died and this picture is called “Golem Driver”, so maybe? This is more of a placeholder than proper representation, but either way it’s drawn by SpiralMagus and has the Fire Mountain Games stamp on it.

The graveknight constantly gains the benefits of this effect (including the bonus hit points, as this aura is part of the graveknight’s creation). In addition, this miasma of fell energies hinders the channeling of positive energy. Any creature that attempts to summon positive energy in this area—such as through a cleric’s channel energy ability, a paladin’s lay on hands, or any spell with the healing subtype—must make a concentration check with a DC 22. If the character fails, the effect is expended but does not function. Undead Mastery (Su) As a standard action, a graveknight can attempt to bend any undead creature within 50 feet to its will. The targeted undead must succeed at a Will save or fall under the graveknight’s control. This control is permanent for unintelligent undead; an undead with an Intelligence score is allowed an additional save every day to break free from the graveknight’s control. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected again by the same graveknight’s undead mastery for 24 hours. A graveknight can control 5 Hit Dice of undead creatures for every Hit Die it has. If the graveknight exceeds this number, the excess from earlier uses of the ability becomes uncontrolled, as per animate dead.

Undyne tromps through the garbage dump, her boots squelching in the muck. Last week she’d chased off some kids messing around on the trash piles. The mountains of refuse are precariously stacked; one wrong move could start a dangerous avalanche. Undyne had chased them all off with a warning, and she’s satisfied to see that they’d taken her to heart. There are no childish exclamations echoing in the caves, no patter of feet.

She’s about halfway through the entire dump. She could turn back now—it’s doubtful the kids would scamper further down—but she might as well make a sweep of the entire area now that she’s here. Her armor is going to need a thorough cleaning regardless.

Undyne rounds a corner. The edge of the garbage dump is on a downhill slope. The water sloshes stray bits of garbage further down, towards the Abyss below. No one knows where the Abyss leads. Some say it’s just a long drop to nothing, while others believe ancient aquatic monsters live in the deep dark, too large and too strange for the rest of monster society. Undyne doesn’t really care one way or the other. But if any of those punks crawled up to the dump and started causing trouble, she’d sure as hell knock ‘em back in.

There’s someone by the Abyss drop off. Undyne squints. A yellow monster? Stars, it better not be that kid that keeps following her around. He’s not even out of stripes yet!

“Hey, you shouldn’t be over there!” Undyne yells, sloshing through the water over to him.

It’s not the tyke, as she’d thought, but instead a full-grown lizard monster who’d been sitting, legs dangling over the precipice. She startles at Undyne’s approach, scrambling upright. Her outfit is soaked with water and sludge from the waist down.

“Oh! Um, I-I, um…” She clicks her claws together.

“What are you doing out here?” Undyne grips her by the arm, tugging her back from the Abyss. “You’re way too close to the edge, it’s dangerous.”

The lizard monster gapes at her. Her mouth tries to form words, but she just keeps stuttering strings of nonsense. Is she intimidated? Is that it?

Undyne removes her helmet, and shakes her hair out. She’s got to look more approachable now, right? Undyne tucks the helmet under one arm, and holds the other out.

“Let’s try again. I’m Undyne.”

“A-Alphys.” They shake hands. Alphys’ grip is wet and clammy. She doesn’t hold Undyne’s gaze for long, her eyes shifting restlessly around the dump. “We’ve, um, m-met before. I’m the R-Royal Scientist.”

“Oh…oh! That’s right, I saw you at Asgore’s party.”

Now it’s coming back to her. She normally avoids stuffy social gatherings like the plague. If she attends she has to wear scratchy clothes with too many ruffles, and suplexing people and/or objects is forbidden. It sucks! But she hadn’t been able to wiggle out of attending as she normally did, because Asgore had invited her personally, staring at her with those big dumb soulful eyes. During the party, Asgore introduced her to the new Royal Scientist. (Who had been the Royal Scientist before Alphys? Their name escapes her mind at the moment.) After Asgore’s introduction, Alphys had given Undyne a jerky nod and fumbled out an excuse to leave.

“So what’re you doing out here? It’s kind of far from the Lab, doc.”

Undyne watches the red blush creep up the scientist’s cheeks.

“I-I was just, um. Thinking! About….the Abyss!” Alphys gestures back to it. “It’s f-f-fascinating, isn’t it? So many t-th-theories on where it leads to!”

“And what do you think?” This is the last stop on her patrol; she’s free to kill some time with Alphys. Good thing, too—by the way she lights up at Undyne’s question, this might take a while.

Alphys adjusts her glasses. “W-Well, you know the standard theory that it leads to the same magma that’s below Hotland? Well, I think that…”

They talked for hours. Well, more like Alphys talked for hours, and Undyne interjected occasionally. But it had been nice. Once Alphys really got into it, it was like all her nervousness melted away. And, in the privacy of her own mind, Undyne can admit that seeing Alphys get so whipped up into a passionate rant is….cute. The way her eyes sparkle, her cheeks flush, her hands gesticulate wildly. It’s utterly adorable.

Before leaving the dump, they exchanged UnderNet IDs. Undyne can only guess at Alphys’ sleep schedule, because no matter what time Undyne messages her, day or night, Alphys is sure to respond within seconds. Alphys was the first to suggest a hangout, and introduced Undyne to the wonders of anime. Alphys had been so nervous to show it to her, which Undyne can’t understand—human history turns out to be really freakin’ awesome!

They settle into a routine. Saturdays are Undyne’s free days, so just about every Friday night they hang out. Typically Alphys comes over to her place, because Hotland is so, well. Hot. And she’d rather not cook herself half to death to see a friend.

Tonight is one such night. Undyne tidies around her house while she waits for Alphys to arrive. Her definition of tidying up is throwing all the stray clutter into the nearest closet. Papyrus would scream.

She’s full of nervous energy. She loves hanging out with Alphys, she’s so cool and funny, but with each visit she just seems to get more and more flustered around her.

“NGAH!! Keep it together, Undyne!” She scolds herself.

She checks the fridge, confirms for the third time that yes, she did get Alphys’ favorite soda. She’s prepared and ready.

Undyne fidgets, fiddling around in the kitchen until there’s a knock at the door. She’s here.

All at once, Undyne is struck by the thought that what she’s wearing isn’t adequate. She looks down at the black tank top and jeans. It’s her normal longue wear. It’s fine, right? The top showcases her impressive biceps and everything. She’s overthinking this. (Still, she vows to search the dump for any anime t-shirts. Alphys would love it.)

Undyne throws open the door. Alphys is waiting, five DVDs clutched in her claws. She’s wearing bright pink sweatpants, and a unicorn t-shirt. Kawaii style, as she calls it.

“Hey Alphy!” Undyne lets her in.

“H-Hello, Undyne.” She shows Undyne the covers of the DVDs she brought. Each one depicts a cute octopus girl in a large fishbowl. “Today I thought we could watch Octo-Hime! It’s about this half-octopus, half-girl, who wants to attend a human school, a-and wear a school uniform and everything.”

Human history could be really strange sometimes. She gets the big swords and all, but she’s never heard of a human with tentacles instead of legs. Maybe Octo-Hime was related to the human mages, or even a monster. Can a monster and a human even have a kid together?

After grabbing some snacks and their drinks—tea for her, soda for Alphys—they move upstairs. Undyne’s bedroom has a television in it, but not a couch, so they end up sitting together on her bed.

Undyne pops the first DVD in and their marathon begins. After some initial puzzlement—“How does she breathe underwater without gills?”—Undyne finds herself wrapped up in this new chapter of human history.

Time passes. They’re ten episodes in, and their pile of snacks is halfway depleted. Alphys has sagged a bit, leaning against Undyne. Their bare arms press together.

Undyne wants to wrap her around her, and pull her in for a kiss. She could do it. She could. Alphys is sitting right there. She just have to lean over, and…

But what if she doesn’t like it? They’ve got a good thing—a great thing—going right now. She doesn’t want to mess that up.

“Look, look!” Alphys tugs on Undyne’s arm. “This is the best part!”

Undyne lets herself be content with the small brush of contact they have now.

Two days after the Octo-Hime marathon, her star pupil shows up for their training session.

“Greetings, Undyne!” Papyrus chirps, holding out yet another bone wrapped in a bow.

“Papyrus!”

Undyne catches him in a headlock, and gives him a friendly noogie.

“Nyeh, Undyne!” Papyrus squirms, but can’t break free of her hold.

“Take it, Pap! Take my friendship!!”

“Your friendship is too strong! And pointy!”

Undyne has mercy on Papyrus, finally letting him wriggle free.

“Come on in, punk.”

Undyne stores Papyrus’ gift with the others, and then it’s time to prep for their lesson.

Papyrus dons his apron. It originally said “Kiss the Cook”, but Papyrus has modified it to say “Kiss the Great Cook Papyrus”.

He hums, grabbing the pasta and tomatoes while Undyne sets a pot in the sink and turns on the faucet.

She stares down into the pot, watching it fill slowly. Her mind can’t help but drift to the same thing it’s been preoccupied with for days now.

Is it possible that Alphys likes her back? The only other people she mentions regularly are Asgore and that annoying robot. She definitely admires Asgore, but who wouldn’t? Fluffy though he may be, he’s still the king! And she gets the vibe that Mettaton is more like an old friend then anything else. Alphys goes out of her way for her. She makes her that chilly pink stuff to help her cool off when she reaches Hotland, and—

“Er, Undyne?” She startles. Papyrus is watching her, eye sockets narrowed. “I think you’ve got enough water.”

Undyne looks down at the pot, and bites back a curse. She really zoned out; the pot is overflowing, water spilling over the sides. She scrambles to turn off the tap, and then pours the excess water down the drain. She can feel Papyrus’ curious stare boring holes into her.

“S-So, how are the Snowdin puzzles? You should update me on them. Like right now.”

Undyne sets the pot on the burner and cranks up the heat beneath it until the flame is roaring. Papyrus folds his arms, not easily deterred.
