The Dementation powers are (a) pretty purple loop-de-loops, (b) not as effective as Dominate (reaaaallyyy missed a good AOE attack), and (c) oddly enough, gave more compassionate dialog choices. I mean. In the pen-and-paper version, Dementation isn't conflict-focused, so the devs had to jigger it to use as attacks. But I was touched when Liotta made Hannah believe she was Paul, so Hannah got to say goodbye. Making Samantha believe Liotta was a pet turtle was funny and spared her the pain of her friend vanishing a second time. Heather thinks her entire experience was a dream and returns to her life, more or less unscathed.

Some great fourth wall breaks in the dialog: "I don't want to get involved either, but tell that to whoever is playing me!" to Beckett after the Giovanni Mansion.

"If I cannot win with effort, I will cheat my way to victory. I am gone." Funnily enough, this was my first run where I didn't hack in to boost stats.

"I just want it to end. I feel like I've been playing forever."

Some nice wider lore references: "I devour knowledge like the great worm devours the corpse of society" could refer to how Salout, in tapeworm form, is devouring Tremere's body and destabilizing the Clan and/or Kindred night society.

"They should have a channel devoted to you in my head" to Beckett. In his Diary, Beckett witnesses Malkavians devouring Malkav and may or may not join the Cobweb (PS check out this great fanfic where he does).

This made me stare into space for a minute and question my life choices. During the Sabbat massacre, Liotta didn't snack on any of the blood doll ghouls (ya know, the ones with the eyes gouged out). She had such high Inspection + Finance that she had $4k in her wallet and could buy blood. I wanted to test a rumor that if you don't feed on the blood dolls, you get extra EXP. You do. BUT anywAY, right before the Tremere miniboss, Liotta was sword-fighting some goons and the blood doll...attacked him for her? Like. He moved on his own. When the goon was dead, the blood doll asked if Liotta was all right. This might have been a glitch but...the horrific implications that those men are still conscious, still willful, still feeling. ACK. I hope they got out the next morning.

Women Make Film – In More Ways Than One By Kim Luperi

“There is a forgotten history of cinema,” the trailer for Mark Cousins’ 14-hour documentary WOMEN MAKE FILM (2018) expounds, reminding viewers that thousands of women have directed movies over the past 13 decades. Today, TCM kicks off “Women Make Film,” an extraordinary three-month series framed around Cousins’ documentary showcasing the breadth of women’s contributions to cinema through 100 diverse films and filmmakers from 44 countries.

All of the directors represented exhibited the passion, drive and talent to cultivate their own vision in a male-dominated business. But it wasn’t always male-dominated; women have been there in all respects from the start, despite the fact that for decades historians, and even Hollywood’s own collective memory since the 1930s, have almost wholly neglected their contributions.

Here’s a look at three areas in which women made early inroads that deserve more recognition today. These are just the tip of the iceberg; many great resources are out there to learn more.

Editing

“One of the most important positions in the motion-picture industry is held almost entirely by women,” The Los Angeles Times wrote in 1926. Indeed, through the era of one-reelers, the technical and monotonous task of editing often fell to the deft hands of uncredited young women. With the advent of features (and later, sound), editing required a more intricate, creative technique, and the new technology brought more men into the fold, but women still contributed in big ways – see: Barbara McLean editing Mary Pickford’s first sound picture, COQUETTE (‘29).

The year the Academy established the Best Film Editing category, Anne Bauchens was one of three nominees (for 1934’s CLEOPATRA), and six years later, she’d become the first woman to win for NORTH WEST MOUNTED POLICE (‘40). Bauchens asserted in a 1941 interview, “Women are better at editing motion pictures than men,” alluding to their patience and a strong emotional sense that allowed women to connect with different stories and understand what audiences want. Many women held high-level supervisory editing positions at studios, including Margaret Booth (MGM, 1936-1969) and Viola Lawrence (Columbia, 1925-1960), opening the doors for later accomplished editors like Dede Allen, Thelma Schoonmaker and Anne V. Coates. Several directors represented in this series, including Dorothy Arzner, Leontine Sagan and Chantal Ackerman, worked as editors during their career, either cutting their teeth in the department on the way up or cutting their own work.

Cinematography

As opposed to editing, camera work has long been a male-dominated area. That said, the Women Film Pioneers Project online (WFPP) points out a “women with cameras” trend in the 1910s in which movie magazines highlighted actresses/camerawomen Grace Davison and Francelia Billington as rarities in this field. “I suppose that it is still a novelty to see a girl more interested in a mechanical problem than in make-up,” Billington remarked a 1914 Photoplay piece.

However, women in the newsreel and documentary worlds like Dorothy Dunn, Katherine R. Bleecker and Osa Johnson didn’t hesitate to pick up a camera and film. Outside Hollywood, Angela Murray Gibson, who ran her own production company in North Dakota, shot all of her own movies. But these women were among the few who engaged in such work for decades. As J. E. Smyth observes in Nobody’s Girl Friday, the American Society of Cinematographers accepted its first female member, Brianne Murphy, in 1980, and as of 2018, women make up only 4% of its membership. Progress is being made though, as Rachel Morrison recently became the first woman nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar for MUDBOUND (2017).

Producing

Producers do a little bit of everything in the movie business, and the same could be said for women working during the medium’s early days. In an effort to gain creative control and develop the stories they wanted to see, several women set up their own production companies during the 1910s and early 1920s; in fact, according to the WFPP, more independent film companies were named after women – actresses, writers, director, producers – than men at that time. Though most of these companies were gone by 1923 due to a variety of factors, select notable films remain, like Marion E. Wong’s THE CURSE OF THE QUON GWON (’17), the first Chinese-American feature, produced by Wong’s Mandarin Film Company.

Women also held powerful producing positions at studios during the silent era, from Lois Weber running Universal’s Rex brand with her husband to June Mathis, who discovered Rudolph Valentino. Flash forward to the 1940s and 1950s, however, and only a handful of female producers operated in the studio system, including Joan Harrison, who produced on her own after working with Alfred Hitchcock, and Virginia Van Upp, best remembered for GILDA (’46). The tides have been changing, though: According to The Los Angeles Times, as of 2020 women make up 43% of the Producers Guild of America. Many directors included in this celebration have also produced their own work, including Jacqueline Audry and Lucrecia Martel.

other languages I’ve studied and lost most of: german, ancient greek. i would love to pick up german again properly because I really did enjoy it and I feel like i could get it back fairly quickly if I put in the effort. i’d also love to take another hard look at ancient greek because I was attempting it at age 12 with very little formal language learning experience, and now that I understand what declensions are, I suspect I would do a lot better!!

Prince Park Seonghwa. 

A man rumored amongst townsfolk to be blessed by the gods. Unusual blonde hair, stunning gray eyes, it has been a long time since the kingdom has seen such a capable leader. 

A foreigner, brought to the Mediterranean kingdom by marriage, he spent the entirety of his childhood learning to be the model prince. The prince’s posture is perfect, he never dodged his studies, he could tame the wildest mare, to everyone, he was the obvious choice for the kingdom’s king.

First Mate Park Seonghwa

No longer a prince, but still just as elegant, Seonghwa has yet to lose any of his old habits during his time out at sea. Being the first person to join the crew once Hongjoong became captain and the first person to be turned immortal, Seonghwa worked hard to prove himself and continues to be one of the most reliable members of the crew. 

Seonghwa may be a little stiff when it comes to meeting new people, but being so close to a certain ‘Kind Pirate King’ has opened his mind-and heart-to meeting new people and the prospect of second chances. 

-Mythology-

As one of the four wind gods of the seasons in Greco-Roman mythology, Boreas is the purple-winged god of the North Winds and Winter alike. In some depictions, instead of his wings being purple, he has white wings with purple attire fluttering behind him. 

His parents are Astraeus and Eos. Astraeus is often said to be the father of two notable sets of sons; the Astra Planeta, five sons representing the stars. The other set of sons are the Anemoi, the four wind gods, with Boreas representing the frigid North Wind.

Boreas’ wife, Oreithyia, (the princess of Athens, as her father was King Erekhtheus) was swept away by him one day as she played in a riverside meadow, with companions (remember, folks. Don’t sweep away your crush and basically kidnap them. That’s not cool.)

Older tellings would depict Boreas residing in Thrace, an area described as the lands around the north of Thessaly. In those depictions, Boreas lived either in a mountain’s cave, or in a beautiful palace, with his home said to be upon the Balkan Mountains (or Haemus Mons).

Oreithyia would become the immortal wife of Boreas and bear him four children; Zetes and Calais (their sons), Chione and Cleopatra (their daughters). (Also, no, this Cleopatra isn’t that Cleopatra). All of their offspring have their own tales about them, and Chione is even regarded as the goddess of snow. 

Boreas’ tales are not as widely told, compared to other gods and goddesses, but he has been mentioned in some of Homer’s tales (specifically in Achilles’ tale), as well as being included in Aesop’s Fables, in a contest between himself and sun god Helios.

-Power Applications/Demon Transformation-

When Seonghwa completely reverts into his demon form, his hair will go from whatever color it currently is to an inky black color, with his gray eyes lightening to an almost pure white color. Elongated ruby-colored marks will appear over his eyes, with the one over his left eye being slightly longer than his right. The same elongated ruby-colored marking will stretch over his lips to form an elongated smile, though I assure you, if you make this form come out, the last thing he’ll be doing is smiling. 

Having been bestowed Boreas’ power, Seonghwa can create ice and snow at will and his prefered method of combat is to dual wield his falcatas, one being the rune-engraved one he took from his kingdom and the other being an ice one he forms at will. 

Seonghwa has mastered his power, using it in small applications here and there for domestic things aboard the ship such as keeping food items cold to prolong their life while out at sea and also using his powers to slow opponents in combat. Since his powers are a part of him, no amount of cold will affect him negatively. 

In fact, if he was in the tundra or somewhere equally as cold, his powers would only be heightened.

Despite his proficiency with his falcatas, as well as any other form of blade, Seonghwa is more than capable to fight hand and hand, and will use his ice powers to freeze body parts of opponents he touches.

I’ll only go through some verses and talk a bit about their connections I put to the chapter. If you haven’t read Chapter Two of Against the Tide, I suggest you do that first, as the song breakdown includes some major spoilers.

Seonghwa’s accomplishments overshadow that of his older brother, Zafer’s. The bloodborne prince is lazy and very much inadequate, but believes it is his birthright to be crowned prince regardless. Feeling victimized and finally feeling the weight of his adequacy, Zafer decides to rise out of his mediocrity, unfortunately at the expense of everything.

Zafer runs from his problems and finds the easy way out of things, while Seonghwa tackles his problems, no matter how difficult, head on. Though these lyrics can be directed towards Zafer and his avoidance of responsibility and desire to ‘ease’ his responsibilities off onto someone else, the delivery in-song fits perfectly well with scenes where there is physical conflict. Whenever I envision this song, I definitely imagine Seonghwa fighting with his falcata in-hand. The power, the intensity, all of it kept in every graceful and deadly swing of his blade.

This is no place to build your home’

In the middle of Seonghwa’s transformation, he reveals his true fears, how he doesn’t need to trust in anyone, how him opening up and trusting someone (his brother) got the closest person to him (Queen Dahlia, his mother) killed. 

The Boreas-infused version of Seonghwa nearly takes complete hold of him, had it not have been for Hongjoong breaking the ice-literally. 

Once he’s calmed down, defeated his demonic self and taken control, Seonghwa is much more open to trusting others, though he still often takes the longest to warm up (ha) to newer members of the crew.

Seonghwa gently wove various tropical flowers into one another, a small, peaceful look on his face as he held up the tiny ring, jolting when he looked past the hole to find Hongjoong staring curiously at him. He startled, all but throwing the ring of flowers behind him as he stared at Hongjoong with wide eyes. 

“P-Putois-”

“What was that?” 

Seonghwa’s eyes narrowed as he moved to hide the ring with his body as Hongjoong tried to peek onto the bed. 

“Nothing.”

“You’re lying.” 

Hongjoong dove onto the bed, laughing merrily as Seonghwa tried to scramble and snatch the ring out of view. The captain wrapped a shadow around his wrists, yanking them back before he grabbed the ring, blinking in wonder at the simple, elegant item. 

“It’s a ring of flowers. Why are you hiding this?” The smaller man mused, sitting half way in Seonghwa’s lap. Seonghwa went beet red, clearing his throat as he took the ring, hesitantly putting it around his wrist as he looked away, huffing. 

“Petite peste-” He muttered before he sighed, running a hand through his blonde hair. 

“It’s...embarrassing. It reminds me of my mother. We would make them together…” He trailed off, biting his lip.

Hongjoong looked at the flower before he smiled, wrapping his legs around Seonghwa’s waist, holding his hand out as an assortment of blossoms grew from his palm. Seonghwa’s lips parted in surprise as Hongjoong held his hand out. 

“Show me how to make them, then. We can make them together.” He offered. Seonghwa blinked in surprise before he chuckled and nodded, kissing his head lightly. 

“Oui, mon putois. Pay attention, okay?” He moved Hongjoong out of his lap and showed him step by step, all with a small smile on his face.

THE PINKERTON FILE ON COCO SMITH

The following is the notes that have been compiled on the outlaw known as Coco Smith by various agents within the Pinkerton Agency.

While the agency has no actual name and official identification for Smith, the alias they use most often is Coco Smith, thus the agency have used it. Other aliases include Joan Dark, Mary Catherine Borgia, Marilyn West, Jayne Harlow, Marian Hawke, Jane Shepard, Penelope Weaver, Heather McCain, Brigid O’Shea, Therese Lourdes, Teresa Bernini, and Lucrezia Caravaggio.

Smith has been implicated in several murders, thefts, kidnappings, and cons, however no investigation has produced anything concrete. But due to the amount of crimes Smith has appeared to be involved with, the agency has decided to keep an eye on her.

Known and suspected associates include Sean MacGuire (outlaw and known associate of Dutch Van Der Linde), Josiah Trelawney (conman and another associate of Van Der Linde), Clive Davies and Clay Davies (brothers and known horse thieves), Madam Nazar (supposed psychic and ‘seller of exotic goods’), Flaco Hernandez (known outlaw, also wanted by the agency), and Marko Dragic (Serbian inventor).

It has been noted that she is particularly hated by members of the Lemoyne Raiders, and what appears to be remaining members of the defunct Ku Klux Klan.

Opinions are oddly divided on Smith, with some seeing her as a no good outlaw, and others believing her to be a helpful, Robin Hood-esque figure. The latter reputation appears to be most common among the lower classes, although some officials and elites have been known to speak favourably of her.

A Pump Action Shotgun, with a long barrel, all nickel metals, art nouveau engravings with brass inlay, and mahogany varnish. This shotgun is said to be called Freyr.

A Double Barrelled Shotgun, with a long barrel, all silver metals, baroque engravings with gold inlay, and mahogany varnish. This shotgun is said to be called Freya.

Smith’s talents appear to be varied and numerous. Thus far the agency has concluded that she is proficient, if not fluent, in no less than thirteen languages aside from English (Italian, French, Spanish, Russian, German, Hebrew, Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Navajo, Sioux, Apache, and Cherokee). According to reports from undercover agents she is also proficient in piano and violin, and can sing. She also appears to have some decent knowledge of modern medicine, as well as herbal remedies according to multiple sources outside of the agency. Highly skilled survivalist, as she has been seen camping in different regions, from New Austin, to Lemoyne, to even the Grizzlies. One field agent noted that she appears to have a particular disdain for gambling, as he invited her to join a game of poker and she appeared to be disgusted at the suggestion. However this could have been part of the act she was portraying at the time.

The agency knows much and yet very little about Smith. She is often described as an enigmatic figure, supposedly just materializing out of nowhere like some kind of character from folklore.

Smith’s attitude towards the law appears to change from one hour to the next, but she is to be regarded as extremely dangerous and deceitful. Ideally the agency requests she be brought in alive for questioning, but if she resits agents have permission to kill.

Tocca Quick Takes

Smelled in the store, not on my skin, YMMV

I love a themed collection. Of anything, really. It’s a marketing gimmick that speaks to my very heart.  “Which one is your favorite?” Gets me every time.

The Tocca perfumes are light, fresh, mostly floral things with girls’ names, in bottles of the same charming round shape but different colors, and cost forty-something dollars each.  Nobody hates them -- they’re just too practical. You’ll see fumeheads recommend them as a nice beginner’s perfume.  

All of this, though, is branding. How do they actually smell?

To my chagrin, the answer is I apparently am not good enough at distinguishing notes to be much of a guide here.  I really thought I’d be a little better at blind guessing.  Oh well.  La lutte continue.  

Maya

Notes: black currant, violet leaf, iris, rose, jasmine, patchouli, sandalwood, oakmoss

To my surprise, a fruity scent I actually liked. It smelled like concord grape, with a breathy floral note on top. Reminds me of Stardust, somehow -- “the nightingale/tells its fairy tale/of paradise, where roses grew.”

Florence

Notes: grapefruit, bergamot, pear, apple, violet leaf, iris, gardenia, jasmine, tuberose, musk, white woods

Green/white floral, like a summer bower, all fresh sap-filled stems and perfumed haze. Love it.  I don’t think I’ve ever not liked a clean white floral.

Cleopatra

Notes: black currant, grapefruit, cassis, green notes, jasmine, tuberose, peach, amber, patchouli, musk, vanilla

I could barely smell this, and wouldn’t know how to describe it. The closest association I had was “hotel room linens/carpet” 

Stella

Notes: blood orange, bitter orange, watery notes, lily, freesia, orchid, watery musk, sandalwood

Orange! A sweetened orange -- like a creamsicle, with a faint floral undertone.

Giulietta

Notes: Apple, tulip, ylang-ylang, lilac, lily of the valley, rose, iris, orchid, heliotrope, cedar, musk, sandalwood

I get a flower right off the bat that’s off-putting somehow -- it reads as “damaged” or “rotten”. I’m not sure what the culprit is.

Simone

Notes: apple, watermelon, lemon, frangipani, ylang-ylang, rose, freesia, woody notes, musk, amber

Wow this smells like cheap kid stuff. When I was in middle school I had some very chemical body sprays from, I think, the Limited Too, and I loved ‘em to death, to my father’s horror. This reminds me of that.

I totally whiffed on this -- I don’t know how to describe the smell. Hard to place.

Ok, so I didn’t get any notes but I did get a very strong association with Venice, masked balls, gazing out into the port to wait for your ship to come in while wearing a gown with slashed sleeves...where the hell did that come from?

This smells like champagne and rose. It’s fun!  Want to pretend you’re a teenage girl going to the fanciest party in her life? Here you go.

My notes say “like the beach?” I’m not sure where that came from -- was probably just smelling a cologne-like opening which is vaguely Italian-coast-y.

EFFECTS OF SOME ROOTSTOCKS ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC PERFORMANCE OF YOUNG ‘VALENCIA’ ORANGE TREES IN CALCAREOUS SOIL |  Journal of Global Agriculture and Ecology

Many fruit crops planted on calcareous soils suffer from iron insufficiency. High pH calcareous soils commonly impact citrus plantations in the Mediterranean region, resulting in tree nutritional imbalances exacerbated by iron shortage. The photosynthetic performance of 'Valencia' orange (Citrus sinensis Osb.) budded on five different rootstocks ('Carrizo' citrange, 'Swingle' citrumelo, 'Rangpur' lime, 'Antalya Cleopatra' mandarin, 'Tuzcu 31 31' sour orange) on calcareous soil was examined in this study. In 2011, the experiment was carried out on the Cukurova University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Horticulture's experimental plot. Leaf chlorophyll content, fluorescence parameters in light-adapted chlorophyll (QY: FV' /FM': Photosystem II quantum yield), and leaf gas exchange parameters were all measured. 'Valencia' scion that was grafted onto 'Rangpur' The mandarin rootstocks 'lime' and 'Antalya Cleopatra' had the maximum chlorophyll content, while 'Swingle' citrumelo had the lowest. However, regardless of rootstock, the transpiration rate of the leaves of the 'Valencia' scion remained constant. 'Valencia' scion leaves grafted on 'Swingle' citrumelo rootstock, on the other hand, showed a considerable drop in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and photosystem II quantum output. The leaves of the 'Valencia' scion grafted on sour orange had the maximum photosynthetic rate and leaf water usage efficiency.
