Radical Jack (2000)
My rating: 4/10
The unholy offspring of Roadhouse, about 50 generic action movies, and Billy Ray Cyrus. Why. Very riffable though, I saw some other reviews mention the Rifftrax version and I can totally see why they'd do this one.

Night Moves (Arthur Penn, 1975)
Cast: Gene Hackman, Jennifer Warren, Susan Clark, Edward Binns, Harris Yulin, Kenneth Mars, Melanie Griffith, James Woods, Janet Ward, John Crawford. Screenplay: Alan Sharp. Cinematography: Bruce Surtees. Production design: George Jenkins. Film editing: Dede Allen. Music: Michael Small.
In the twisty, satisfying noir Night Moves Gene Hackman shows once again what a terrific actor he was, even though he seems to me a little miscast as a retired professional football player. He brings it off anyway, even managing to be sexy despite a pornstache and one of those '70s hairstyles that looked like a toupee even when they weren't.

"The Q Stands For Queer, Not Quiet"
Our (my mother and I) tree for the ArtisTREES art show this year is a dedication to the transgender community, both to the 35 transgender Americans that have been senselessly taken from us this year alone and to the transgender Americans that are still fighting for their rights to this day.
Each white bulb lists the name and age of a transgender person who was killed by transphobia in the year 2022. The pyramid tree-topper is an homage to the HIV/AIDS campaign by ACTUP in the 1980s, when the Reagan administration failed to respond quickly enough to the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States.
These are the names of those we've lost in 2022:

"Home"
Makes Its Broadway Return.

"Home" at the Todd Haimes Theatre was originally brought to Broadway in 1980 after a stint at the Negro Ensemble Company the year prior. Written by Samm-Art Williams (who died just before previews begun), follows the life of Cephus Miles (Tory Kittles) as he moves back and forth in his life from the late 1950's to the present. As people move away from Cross Roads, North Carolina, a farm area, workers are difficult to find, family members have passed, but he loves the land;" loves the black sod beneath his feet". Even though he works in a mill during the winter months, he lives for the days that he is able to work the land. From tobacco, corn and other crops, this is what gives Cephus the most pleasure.
Not overly religious, he becomes so when he meets and falls in love with Pattie Mae Wells (Brittany Inge). As both parents agree to them being married, he must first be Baptized if he is to wed Ms. Wells. The other stipulation is that she must get an education at a teaching college in Virginia. As there lives splinter over the course of time, Cephus will never love another woman.
"Home" has a few fundamental problems to it: the first is the speed of the speaking in Tory Kittles, the second issue is that the two woman, who perform their roles with brilliant aplomb are sometimes confusing in how they portray their characters. This falls squarely on the direction of Kenny Leon. Like many of Leon's shows that he directed of recent, the actors tend to fall out of cadence, sometimes he "overkill's" a scene. The last problem is that the show slows to a snails pace at two points in the show. The first is when Cephus goes to jail, the second big lull is shortly after his prison release. We never get a full understanding as to why he is incarcerated, other than he is a draft dodger and that he doesn't believe in killing.
As the three actors move about time and back, Both Stori Ayers as woman two and Inge do an admirable job playing different roles. Ayers is brilliant in the role of a toothless bus driver taking Cephus from the big city to back home to the farm which was just purchased for him by someone he doesn't at first recognize (at least not the name).
The set design by Arnulfo Maldonado, the costumes by Dede Ayite and the lighting by Allen Lee Hughes are not remarkable, however, the sound by Justin Ellington is first rate. The subtitles during performance were brilliant in that it hit the subconscious, giving great mood effect.
The play and its writing did give us some good material, what was always in his heart is where he was most happy, at home. The ending, even though it was predictable, was heartfelt. Cephus had a tough life on the whole, he never complained about the cards he was dealt at times, he just moved forward, only to return to his happy place.

The World According To Micki Grant
I always love finding a hidden gem off off Broadway. The New Federal Theater in its new digs (or temporary, not sure) produced "The Life According To Micki Grant". Directed by Nora Cole, (I wasn't given a program), this musical focuses on the life of Minie Perkins, she became Micki by nickname and Grant after her first husband. "He was a good man so I kept his name," she tells us.

The Wyrm King
'The Wyrm King' the third and final volume of Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. In this volume the fantastical characters are really showing themselves and their various talents. Nick and Laurie and family and still learning and making compromises as well as promises trying to be kept in helping the Nixie's and the other people and entities. Nick along with all the others learn how to help each other past and present. Once again Holly Black's artwork would make great coloring pages. All of these books thanks to Tony and Holly were great show and tell books for all ages.

The Adventures of David Dashiki-Stories of an African American Hero...Year of the Black Man-2024
Tumblr media
The first and greatest Black orator of the twentieth century was not, as a young printer in Jamaica, a natural speaker: this young, private, intense activist taught himself through trial and humiliation until he learned to speak with fiery immediacy to audiences of any size." The excellence and power of Garvey's oratory was the single most uncontroversial of his attributes, Garvey's enemies were as dazzled by his speeches as his admirers. The fluency of his speeches lay in the fact that he had something to say, something which touched so deeply that it constituted an outpouring from the heart and found response in his hearers." (Historian's reflection on the impact of the oratory of Marcus Garvey).
Tumblr media
I was raised in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York-(Daddy Dashiki speaks). If you have never heard of it, it is the sports capitol of the universe. We played everything with ball in it...Punch Ball, Stick Ball, Baseball, Softball, Stoop Ball, Box Ball, Dodge Ball, Football and when Bill Ware's brother discovered a new kind of ball at his local high school, we played Soccer in the streets. Injury comes with sports part and parcel. The mash unit for me was the kitchen table and the doctor was DeDe Dashiki, my mother.
With so many scrapes and bruises, I suffered battle fatigue. One day, I asked Mama De De if there was not another remedy besides IODINE . It was as painful as Hell. I explained to her. Well, not in that language. She stared me down. " Would you prefer to do this yourself? You need to act like the man you profess to be. All puffed up but only air inside. Of course, it hurts. That is what tells me it's working. " To this day, I remember those words. " There are times when we have to suffer and sacrifice to achieve a cure. That pain shows us that we are moving toward our goal. For what we want to accomplish in this Year of the Black Man 2024..will require a little sting. Our forefathers understood that. They endured that pinch in spite of the fact that there was no safety or relief in sight. What we overlook is that our opposition wants us to focus on the imminent pain and not the goal. Since we are what we think about most of the time, focusing on the impending discomfort will make the racist living conditions of being Black in America more palatable in comparison to the prick. De De was right as always. There were greater sacrifices made. Dr. Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, Herbert Lee, Roman Ducksworth, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Caroline Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, Louis Allen, Henry Hezekiah Dee, Charles Eddie Moore, Oneal Moore...Those were the fighters who did not run from conflict. They stood fearlessly. The sting did not threaten them. Therefore , we have a responsibility, a mandate to be unafraid, to be steadfast in this struggle. In this way, we honor our dead.
We must act for the freedom promised. We must act because we are in a war against our existence but has never been declared . We must act for so many lives have been lost. We have suffered but America has even more so. With all of the killings, lynchings, segregation, discrimination, prejudice, racism , bias, bigotry, injustice, inequity and hatred, what has America gained? What it has lost is the full and complete contribution of an erudite, scholarly, creative, dynamic, dignified, loyal and industrious segment of its citizenry, Badass Black Folks. We are not where we should be or could be since all of us are not free.
Black Men, we must respond because our country needs us to keep the vision of America ever present in the mind and heart of its people. Why should we be the victims of a mentally deficient few? Why do we suffer the indignities and insults of the injured illiterates? Why should we have to fight for rights granted every other ethnic group in the country save us? . No! We stand up and make our desires, rights and wishes known. We prepare ourselves and especially our children for a life that white people in America enjoy. We fall no longer for the strategies inflicted upon us daily. There is nothing wrong with us except that you refuse to release us from the bonds and chains of racism. We have long ago paid our dues. In this moment, we want to collect on the debt you owe us. We have worked for it. We have earned it. We deserve it and we are willing to endure the IODIE to attain it.
This is what we know and are ready to act on. America has not made any commitment about securing for African Americans all the rights guaranteed all of its white citizens,
There has been a war declared on Black citizens by white citizens to prevent them from acquiring said rights. This is evident in every state in the union. There is a uniformity of negative treatment toward Blacks in America
The effort to maintain a state of second -class citizenship for Black Americans is fostered through the school system.
Black schools are providing an inferior product of education for its Black children.
Whereas white education is designed to prepare white children for success in the world with the complete and full cooperation of the system , parents, and political power brokers.
Black children who demonstrate high academic achievement are in the minority in Black schools and considered an anomaly. The rate of failure far exceeds high scholarship. The schools have inferior outcomes and more children are referred to special education than to specialized high schools. It is a system designed toward genocide rather than academic freedom.
There is no concern that these schools have been failing Black children for decades. If they were NON -profit enterprises, they would go under, have to close shop. These institutions of learning in a sentence can be described as follows, " Throw them into special education and close the door."
Black Men , We have to organize and act. Forget the IODINE. ACT!!!!!

Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967)
Cast: Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons, Denver Pyle, Dub Taylor, Evans Evans, Gene Wilder. Screenplay: David Newman, Robert Benton. Cinematography: Burnett Guffey. Art direction: Dean Tavoularis. Film editing: Dede Allen. Music: Charles Strouse.
Calling a film a landmark, as Bonnie and Clyde so often has been called, does it a disservice in that it prioritizes historical significance over the aesthetic ones. It makes it difficult to appreciate or criticize the movie without recalling what it was like to see and to talk about the first time you saw it -- if, like me, you saw it in a theater when it was first released. It's a landmark because its success showed the Hollywood studios, which were mere surviving remnants of the old movie factories of the '30s and '40s, that there was an audience for something other than the big musicals and epics that had dominated American movies during the 1960s. There was a young audience out there that had grown up with the French New Wave and the great Italian and Japanese films of that decade, and was resistant to piety and platitudes. Along with The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), Bonnie and Clyde gave this audience something they were looking for, and fed the revolution in filmmaking that made the 1970s one of the most adventurous decades in film history. It's no surprise that the screenwriters, Robert Benton and David Newman, were so familiar with the New Wave that they wanted François Truffaut or Jean-Luc Godard to direct their movie. And even today Warren Beatty, in the opening scenes of Bonnie and Clyde, is bound to remind one of Jean-Paul Belmondo in Breathless (Godard, 1960). It was a movie that launched the careers of Faye Dunaway and Gene Hackman, not to mention giving Beatty a boost into superstardom. It also put an end to some careers, most notably that of Bosley Crowther, who had been the New York Times's film critic since 1940 but was undone by his vitriolic attack on  Bonnie and Clyde, which he denounced not only in his initial review but also, after protests from the movie's admirers, in two subsequent articles. Crowther was replaced as the Times critic in 1968. On the other hand, Newsweek's critic, Joe Morgenstern, initially panned the film but, after being urged by readers to reconsider, recanted his original critique. So the question persists: Historical significance aside, is Bonnie and Clyde really any good? I'd have to say, after seeing it again for the first time in many years, that it holds up as entertainment. The acting is superb, and Burnett Guffey's cinematography, Dean Tavoularis's art direction, and Theadora van Runkle's costuming all provide a fine 1960s interpretation of 1930s style. Where it falls down for me is in substance: The screenplay, which was worked over by Robert Towne, is too preoccupied with Bonnie and Clyde as lovers with (especially Clyde) some psychosexual hangups. It only feints at demonstrating why the pair became cult figures in the Great Depression, most notably in a scene when Clyde refuses to take the money of a farmer who is in the bank they're robbing, and in a scene in which the wounded couple and C.W. Moss (endearingly played by Michael J. Pollard) stop for help at a bleak migrant camp. Only in scenes like these do we get a sense of the deep background of Depression-era misery, a fuller treatment of which might have elevated the film into greatness, the way Francis Ford Coppola's first two Godfather films  (1972, 1974) turned Mario Puzo's popular novel into an American myth. Otherwise, the criticism that it glamorizes the outlaws by turning them into fashion-model beauties still has some merit.
