June 30, 2020 - Cloven-feathered Dove (Drepanoptila holosericea)

Found only on New Caledonia’s main island and Ile des Pins, these doves inhabit humid forests and savannas. They eat fruits and berries, including figs. Breeding between August and November, they build flimsy platform nests from twigs in trees and shrubs. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to hunting and habitat degradation caused by mining, logging, fires, and fire suppression.

Alright. Let's talk unicorns.

There are many different kinds, first of all, based on what part of the world we're talking about. There's your standard, run-of-the-mill unicorn: Medieval European. These are pretty common in art and films, and their defining features are the white horse-esque body with the cloven hooves of a deer, the white tufts of hair around their hooves (known as "feathers"), a lion's tail, and sometimes a beard hanging off their chin. The most famous depiction (I believe) of this kind of unicorn is found in the Unicorn Tapestries, a series of tapestries depicting the hunt of a Medieval European unicorn:

Other works of art also depict this kind of unicorn: The Lady and the Unicorn is one, as is Raphael's later painting: Woman with a Unicorn. But just doing a search for Medieval unicorns in art would bring up a host of resources.

Travel to Greece, however, and the unicorn you find there is a slightly different one. This one has a white body, yes, but a red head, and a multicolored horn: black, red, and white.

Gravitating to the Middle East, one finds a different kind of unicorn, one whose origins spring from the area around modern-day India: the Karkadann. Its early descriptions were most likely people's first looks at rhinoceroses, so this unicorn is not traditionally as elegant as the Western unicorn. It's a large, fierce creature, with a short, curved horn, who could only be tamed by a virgin or the soft song of a wood dove.

There are illustrations depicting Bucephalus, the mighty steed of Alexander the Great, as a Karkadann. Then again, Alexander was regarded as part-god by the Egyptians and the Romans, so him riding a unicorn isn't much of a stretch.

The final category of unicorn that I know of is the Chinese Qilin/Japanese Kirin. This is a creature that looks more exotic than any other unicorn, possessing features that resemble deer, dragons, and in some depictions, have more than one horn. However, I've seen enough people calling them unicorns to keep them in this list. According to Japanese and Chinese legend, they usually appear to signal the coming of a wise and prosperous ruler. Kirin and Qilin artwork tends to have more variety, as well, than other unicorns. They're a more diverse category, and not every Qilin/Kirin possesses the same set of defining features as, say, the European unicorn.

I realize that there are many other categories of unicorns; winged unicorns, water-dwelling unicorns, etc., but these are some of the most defined and well-known interpretations of this mythical creature.

There are many other cool aspects of unicorns, including symbolism, powers, and ways to tame them, but I think I'll save that for a separate post.
