Reread Redwall for the first time in like…eight years last week. It was fun! I completely forgot most of it so it was like reading it for the first time all over again.

Anyways, Cluny’s death is so comically brutal to me that I had to draw something about it.

Vitch Theories: 🐀

Vitch is Cluny’s son: This was my thought many years ago (when I was 11 or 12), but there’s nothing to support that theory. Vitch and Cluny share no physical characteristics (and without a known love interest for Cluny or possible mother to Vitch, there’s no way to determine which traits (eye color, fur markings, eyebrows) Vitch inherited from his parents).

Plus, depending on how the timing between Redwall and Mattimeo works (seasons or years), Vitch could be too young to be Cluny’s son. It would make more sense for him to be Cluny’s grandson or related to him in some other way.

I’m not completely against the theory as it would be interesting if the son (or daughter) of Cluny the Scourge sought vengeance for their father’s death and became enemies with the son of their father’s killer, I’m just not convinced.

Vitch’s Name: Many Redwall fans (or commentators on YouTube) theorize that Vitch’s name comes from the word ‘bitch’. I don’t know if canonically this is the case but the closeness to the word and his aggressive behavior in Redwall does suggest possible abuse in Vitch’s early childhood.

Here’s My Thought: Vitch was abandoned as a small child in an orphanage. Because he was a rat (possibly the only vermin child at the orphanage), he may have been verbally abused or neglected by the woodlander staff or bullied by woodlander children. Vitch’s real name might have been ‘Victor’ or ‘Vick’ but he forgot his actual name due to being call ‘bitch’ so many times.

Maybe Slagar invaded that orphanage and took all the children prisoner as slaves but was surprised to find a small rat child there.

He and his troops might have been the first and only adult vermin Vitch ever saw at that time. He may have seen Slagar as a hero for killing his abusers and chaining his bullies and joined Slagar out of admiration and loyalty.

Slagar likely only tolerated Vitch as he knew he could use him to get inside Redwall and spy for him. I don’t know if he always planned to give Vitch to Malkariss knowing he’d likely be enslaved but the fact he did indicates to me just how little Slagar truly cared for Vitch.

So basically, I don’t think Vitch ever had a chance at a normal and happy life. I’m not excusing what he did or his behavior but I just don’t believe all vermin (in the Redwall world) are all inherently evil while woodlander are all (mostly) good.

i was going through my art files and i found this rough sketch of Cluny and i don't remember what pen i was using for the line art but it is so good and i'm mad at myself for not finishing the picture

granted it is saved as "cluny but I have depression" so that should tell you why i didn't finish it

Speaking of Cluny's characterization, did you know that four out of the twenty-two books have rats as their main villain?

Mariel of Redwall with Gabool the Wild, a searat

Redwall (of course) with Cluny the Scourge, a bilge rat

The Long Patrol with Damug Warfang, a greatrat (apparently)

and Loamhedge with Raga Bol, written in the wiki just as "rat."

Interesting, huh? That's 18%

Anyone recognize this guy? I loved watching this animated series as a kid- still need to read the books.

Redwall Thingy: Maybe storyish ideas(?)

One of my first memories with Redwall (this was when I was 9 or 10 I think), is a nightmare the show gave me: a wizard turned his mouse apprentice into a monster one night (he slept outside in a sock drawer). I think it was Shadow specifically that gave me that dream, he reminds me of it.

(I was also really into mouse related media at the time-Ralph and The Motorcycle, Angelina Ballerina, Secret of Nimh)

More recently, I dreamt that Cluny was a lab rat escapee and somehow it came up with his rats and he had to explain to (someone?) what he was put through in the labs.

I actually kind of like the ‘Cluny the lab rat’ dream and might try to write something like that but I don’t think I’ll include humans in it. The height differences of the animals in Redwall versus the actual heights in real life and imagining humans in it just hurt my brain!
