The Gang Meets Jamie’s Mum (Part 1)
I wrote this because I realized that since Jamie is around 25 and Rebecca and Ted are mid-forties, if Jamie’s mom had him in her early twenties she would be about the same age
Ted’s on his way to work when he bumps into a middle-aged woman lost on her way trying to get to Nelson Road Stadium. She makes an awkward comment which Ted misinterprets as flirting, and he panics, slightly
For the past twenty years, Ted’s response to people hitting on him has been Sorry, I’m Married. That doesn’t work anymore and he has no way to politely turn somebody down prepared and he blurts all this out
She laughs and says that she definitely wasn’t flirting. If she’s honest, she wouldn’t know how.
Ted is relieved but he also senses there’s something more here so he does the Ted Lasso special active listening and she ends up spilling the beans
She admits she’s been too busy being a working class single mom, and her last relationship ended badly. Her son is very protective and she’s doesn’t want to worry him, and it’s been so long and she’s gotten so old she’s sure there’s no point.
Ted is too recently divorce to at all engage with the topic of what children think of their parents dating life
Ted’s is trying to encourage her to believe in herself, that she’s a real catch, and hey, if she wants she can practice flirting with him right now. They know they’re not interested in each other so it’s nice and low stakes! Training is key to success!
Jamie Tartt walks in to find his coach and uncomfortably close to pseudo father figure Flirting With His Mum did you just fuck my mum coach lasso of course not she’s just gotten to town today but Jamie doesn’t say anything yet he’s just focused on greeting his mom.
Mum how did you not realize this was my coach how many people with Kansas accents did you think would be around here
She was just flustered from being lost and didn’t think about it, besides, she points out, he could have been at least one other person!
he could not have been beard mum. he has a mustache.
Jamie’s mom breaks off to go to unpack she was just stopping by because she couldn’t wait to say hi to Jamie first thing when she arrived to stay in town
Jamie pulls Ted aside like It’s Time To Talk
Ted is trying to walk the very fine line of Jamie, I have tremendous respect for you, it would be a conflict of interest, except I have zero interest, but not because she isn’t attractive, she is, just not to me, but she could make somebody else very happy, somebody else other than me, because she’s her own woman with a sexuality that is none of my business and you need to be okay with that!
Jamie is like this is the worst day.
but at least the coach isn’t actually trying to get with his mom
