Green orchid/2: 1950 Fiat 1400 Orchidea by Vignale
If you think you’ve already seen this car, you’re right: you probably saw it on Classic Virus earlier this year, but we felt it was necessary to republish it as there are now more photos and more information. First of all, it should be mentioned that this car belonged to a single family of noble Sicilian origin in the province of Catania, who kept it from 1950 to 2018. This explains the…

Rolls-Royce Droptail La Rose Noire, 2024. Created to a client commission by Rolls-Royce Coachbuild, inspired by the Black Baccara rose, an intense, velvet-like flower that originates in France and is beloved by the mother of the commissioning family. Following on from the Sweptail and Boat Tail, the new droptail will be built in an edition of 4 cars, each telling "a unique and personal story that reflects the ambition, visions and taste patterns of its commissioning client"

Coachbuilt Chrysler PT Cruiser Embraces Vintage Car Styling - Tara Hurlin @Hemmings
Love them or hate them, most of us will remember the public release of the Chrysler PT Cruiser, with the first models hitting production lines in early-2000 for the 2001 model year. The retro-styled compact car certainly made waves. During the PT Cruiser’s 10-year run, Chrysler made 1.35 million models to keep up with public demand, a surprising number to those who love to loathe them. Hurtan, a…

What is Automobile Body Coach Building?
Automobile body coachbuilding, often simply referred to as coachbuilding, is a specialized craft that involves the design and construction of custom vehicle bodies, typically for cars and trucks. While the term "coachbuilding" has historical roots in the creation of horse-drawn carriages, it has evolved to encompass the design and fabrication of custom vehicle bodies for motorized vehicles. Here are some key aspects of automobile body coachbuilding:
Custom Vehicle Bodies: Coachbuilders design and manufacture custom bodies for vehicles, creating unique and often handcrafted designs that differ from the standard factory-produced bodies. These customized bodies can be tailored to suit specific purposes or the owner's preferences.
Historical Significance: In the early days of the automobile industry, vehicles were often sold as chassis-only units, leaving it to independent coachbuilders to create the bodywork. This allowed for a wide range of styles and configurations, leading to the creation of bespoke luxury cars.
Aesthetic Considerations: Coachbuilders pay special attention to the aesthetics of the vehicle, creating designs that are visually appealing and in line with the client's desires. This includes the design of the car's exterior as well as the interior cabin.
Materials and Craftsmanship: Coachbuilders use various materials, including steel, aluminum, wood, fiberglass, and composite materials, to construct the vehicle bodies. Craftsmanship is a significant element of coachbuilding, with skilled artisans and craftsmen often handcrafting many of the components.
Functionality: Beyond aesthetics, coachbuilders consider the functionality of the custom vehicle body. This may involve tailoring the design for specific purposes, such as limousines, ambulances, hearses, or delivery vehicles.
Restoration and Preservation: In addition to creating new custom bodies, coachbuilders may be involved in the restoration and preservation of classic and vintage vehicles, ensuring that historical or rare automobiles maintain their original appearance.
Collaboration with Auto Manufacturers: While the practice of coachbuilding declined with the advent of mass-produced vehicles with integrated bodywork, some coachbuilders collaborate with automakers to create limited-edition or special series of vehicles.
Modern Coachbuilding: While traditional coachbuilding has become less common, modern coachbuilders often work on high-end luxury or supercar brands, crafting bespoke vehicles for discerning customers who desire a unique and exclusive experience.
Safety and Regulations: Coachbuilders must adhere to safety and regulatory standards. This includes ensuring that custom-built vehicles meet emissions and safety regulations, depending on the region.
Technology Integration: Modern coachbuilders incorporate advanced technologies into their custom designs, including cutting-edge infotainment systems, safety features, and alternative powertrains.
Automobile body coachbuilding remains a niche field in the automotive industry, with a focus on creating one-of-a-kind vehicles for discerning customers. The practice combines craftsmanship, engineering, and design to produce unique, aesthetically pleasing, and functional custom vehicle bodies.

1953 Chrysler Ghia Special coupe
Extremely rare and largely original coupe with a famous past
In the early 1950s, Chrysler teamed up with Carrozzeria Ghia of Italy to build a handful of show cars to demonstrate what American engineering and Italian coachbuilding could produce. Chrysler built six of these vehicles, named the Chrysler Ghia Special coupe, and Ghia built 12 more.
“These Chrysler Specials were show stoppers at the time of their introduction and were reserved for celebrities the world over,”
