Lise couldn’t help but watch as Aelita’s gaze darted about her room, occasionally lingering on photoboards or a particularly interesting pile of clutter. Studying, enchanted. Lise hardly used the main lights in her room, opting instead for fairy lights spiderwebbed over her bed, her desk, all along the perimeters of her room. Lamps that emitted sweet pink light blanketed them in a way that created a sort of pocket dimension, where there was an outside world if they wanted to visit it. But for the moment, the only thing that mattered was Lise’s room.

“Come on,” Lise teased, something she was rather good at when there weren’t pre-show nerves eating at her, “You’re acting like you’ve never been invited to a sleepover before!”

Aelita’s eyes fell to the ground and Lise noticed her cheeks flush with a color that betrayed a sort of darkness inside that she hadn’t meant to stir. Immediately feeling embarrassed with pangs of guilt, Lise apologized, almost backpedaling but she figured the apology would hold. It did, Aelita smiled back at her, but it was reserved and embarrassed herself. Lise perked her chin to the side, curious but respectful. At the very least Aelita didn’t move or fall into an impenetrable silence; the mood hadn’t been ruined. Still, Lise could note that there were tatters at the edges that she hadn’t previously seen, and she’d have to tread carefully lest the tatters become rips and holes. It felt like their friendship had just begun—that Aelita so easily agreed to spend a night at her house seemed nothing short of a miracle, especially knowing that Aelita went to a boarding school. Her gut reaction was that Aelita hadn’t been allowed to be invited to sleepovers.

Her second, more thoughtful reaction figured that rather than that maybe Aelita just had never been invited.
