Random musing... partially due to a random muse that I suddenly felt driven to write. Which led me to ask this question.
How old is Sakuya at this current time in Dakkan no Roze? I gonna assume it's between 15-16... or at most 17.
But then, another question would have to be asked. When... was Sakuya born? Cos the first ep mentioned that Sherry and her husband relocated to Hokkaido, and from the flashback of when Sakuya talked about the Kirkwaines...
Tumblr media
...it's implied that Sakuya was still a baby when her family moved to Hokkaido. Also, there's this...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It made me wonder...
Was Sherry already living in Japan and married to Jugo when Lelouch and Nunnally were exiled to Japan? Did the move to Hokkaido happen before Lelouch and Nunnally were sent to Japan? Or was it after Britannia took over Japan? Was the real reason Charles chose Japan as the place of Lelouch and Nunnally's exile because Sherry was there? But then there's the whole political hostage thing with the Kururugi's! Or did that hostage thing only start because of the war? Did Sherry ever get in contact with Lelouch and Nunnally when they first arrived in Japan? Did Lelouch even KNOW that his actual oldest sister was Sherry and NOT Guinevere back then? I have so many questions!

If I had a nickel for every time Johnny Yong Bosch voiced a teenage boy with a secret lineage who gets powers from a supernatural girl he tried to save who then starts living with him without asking, supports him in his secret second life that begins after getting said powers and was also the number one f/m pairing for the character on Ao3 I’d have two nickels.
which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Preview of my Zine piece for Geass Fragments: A Code Geass Fanzine!
You can find them here on Tumblr: @geasszine
I'd like to thank @tofucasserole and @fury-brand for helping me with the Absolute Mess™ that was my first draft of this essay.
Additional very special thanks to @alchimique and the editors working on the zine who helped me polish the subsequent drafts to a shine, and to my fellow zine contributors who talked through ideas with me, helped me choose areas of focus, and encouraged my use of the (working) title The Chad Char vs The Virgin Lelouch.
It was a pleasure to work collaboratively with passionate fans of Code Geass on this project, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to participate. I can't wait to see the final zine when it's all done.

That’s part of what makes it good though, because if you’re paying attention, Lelouch uses the fanatical nationalism of the Japanese people to achieve his goal. It wouldn’t have been possible if the JLF wasn’t so convinced that they should be in power and every Japanese person should be willing to die for that… just like WW2. In universe, Japan has never had the opportunity to engage in the same level of imperialism as real world Japan, but it’s made pretty clear that they don’t want to stop at getting their country back.
The Britannian Empire is the antagonist, sure, but the whole point of Code Geass is that you can think you’re doing the right thing all you want, but every single person who makes any difference in the show, including Euphemia, is ultimately using that to justify their own conceit. You’re supposed to think there’s something wrong with how the Japanese resistance/government approaches the conflict, and you’re supposed to think there’s something wrong with how Lelouch approaches it.
This doesn’t mean they succeeded in making the audience realize that, because underlying themes almost always get a little muddled if they’re not directly in your face, but Japanese imperialism is not completely ignored in Code Geas. It’s not always well handled, either, of course, because Japanese media (and the people who work in it) are still pretty steeped in nationalism. Part of why it’s more character driven than plot driven too, I suspect. Less to confront if everything is from the perspective of a non Japanese person. (I’m aware Code Geass is far from perfect.)
wow code geass you're right it would be fucked up if japan got colonized by a western empire. i'm gonna google japan empire to find out more

Clamp Art Style Analysis: Part 4: Examining Concept art: xxxholic, Code Geass, Kabuki Bu
Now time for xxxholic concept art. The early concept art closely resembles ukiyoe painting; this is seen in the design of the characters. If you look at the concept art it was done with a pencil and then colored with an ink pen much like Tsubasa Holic had concept art with characters inked.
Tumblr media
While looking at how Yuko was inked, that was something I found interesting about it. There were pencil lines in Yuko's hair, her hair was drawn by a pencil and then inked with a pen.
Tumblr media
Even when Yuko's hair is inked it does have a shape. The end of her long hair does have a shape; they draw the basic shape of her with a pencil. There are ink lines in her bangs and other hair in front that flow down naturally. This is done by pencil and then filled in by pen.  When it came to yukos hair they inked the outline with a pen then they filled it with an ink Clamp that inked the strands of her hair even the hair flowing down her shoulder was inked.
Watanuki's concept art is drawn by pencil first then his hair and clothes were inked like yukos.
Tumblr media
Watanuki had hair strands sticking out of his hair. His hair is inked in the series but his pencil sketch had few lines. The Watanuki next to Domaki is close to the Watanuki we know in the series.
Tumblr media
Watanuki’s poses are exaggerated in the manga but his concept art had his poses look different the Watanuki here is different from the Watanuki we know his poses looked realistic it wasn’t long or noodly like in the manga Watanuki is expressive so it would make sense that his poses are exaggerated. Watanuki has a variety of emotions in the concept art he looked mischievous and saucy compared to how we see him in the series he looked a lot younger like a middle schooler than what we see him now due to his poses and expressions Clamp toned down his mischievous expression to make him relatable.
Domeki's concept art looked radically different, Domeki’s expression is a lot different in concept art even featuring a weird one of him smiling. Domeki's expression changed the impression of his character.
Tumblr media
His smiling made him look smug, almost like you want to punch him.
Tumblr media
The bottom one down below resembles the Domeki expression in the series.
Tumblr media
Domeki did not have too many lines in his hair and looked simple in the sketch which makes it seem not too hard to draw. Domeki had deep eye folds and slanted sleepy eyes in the concept art, the slanted and sleepy eyes are something Clamp had trouble drawing since it had a lot of lines because of the lines they needed to use to ink.
Tumblr media
Domekis’ his expression and eyes as something Clamp found tricky. since his expression changed the impression of his character and the lines in Domeki’s eyes made it difficult for Clamp to ink.
For Himawari’s concept art, Clamp didn’t change compared to her design in the main series. Himawari’s hair is curly and tied in twin tails her twin tails were curly in a spiral in the manga in the sketch in the concept art when she hasn’t inked the sketch her hair has a shape and silhouette
Tumblr media
there are few lines in her bangs with her hair curly and curves at the end.
Tumblr media
Himawari's previous design was reserved and mature but her design changed to look energetic and bright I think the reason why they changed her design was to give Himawari a more ominous feeling when she appeared in the manga. I think this change in her design is done intentionally by Clamp to not make Himawari’s ability to cause others misfortune to those around her obvious. I think the reason why Clamp chose this as Himawari's design is to be misleading they changed her design because they didn’t want Himawari's bad luck to be obvious in her design.
Now time for the animation productions, Clamp was involved in animation productions and even had a hand in concept design for the characters with code Gauss being one of the main examples. Clamp is the main creator of Code Geass’s character designs; they had a hand in creating the characters for the series.
For code geass, Clamp drew numerous characters and experimented with designs for the series The director led the direction of the designs and Clamp drew them Clamp wanted to see how much the director would allow in terms of design within the worldview view Clamp came up with various costumes and designs as a test for code geass
The main character Lelouch is the only one with many sketches since he is the main character so he appears more than once.
Tumblr media
The first concept art of Lelouch was colored with his first sketches..
Tumblr media
Clamp took outside sources as inspirations for their designs with the characters for Lelouch whose real-life main influences in his character design are Japanese idol duos KinKi Kids and Tackey & Tsubasa, Clovis outfit resembles someone French court
Tumblr media
and Schneizel's appearance in his design came from greek sculptures,
Tumblr media
Sayoko looked more Japanese in her design,
Tumblr media
Clamp drew Rolo with the image between Lelouch and Nunnally
Tumblr media
Looking at the concept art of code geass the lines are loose and not heavily detailed This is drawn to know where things are placed there are a lot of clean fine lines I guess that it's done by mechanical pencil.
When I talked about someone about code gauss concept art and how they drew a long time ago I realized one thing
The lines in the concept art looked to be drawn by their wrists due to the long lines an artist can recognize if it's drawn by the wrist.
The Clamp concept art for Code Geass looked more detailed compared to the rest of the concept art they did for manga, There may be more lines in the clothes. The clothes have more details in Code Geass mostly because it's drawn for an anime. The eyes in the characters are stylized, and both the eyes and jawline are darkened; you can see these both clearly in the face.
When it comes to hair in the concept art I tried to find out how it was drawn, The hair isn’t detailed compared to the illustration. When I view the hair in the concept art for the hair it flows naturally, goes everywhere has movement and uses few lines. I view the number of lines in hair and the bangs in concept art as short hair doesn’t have too many lines. When it comes to hair it focuses on the silhouette, general shape, lines, and movement, it uses simple lines when drawing the hair and bangs. The silhouette of the hair is drawn instead of the details in concept art.
Tumblr media
Curly or wavy hair is a bunch of squiggly lines even if the bangs are curly or wavy.
Tumblr media
The hair has curved lines for the hair that is wavy or curly even where the hair ends.
Tumblr media
The long hair can be curly at the end too. The concept art splits the hair into sections and clumps the hair this is like drawing from out of the photograph.
Tumblr media
Some Clamp art or concept art looked like realistic paintings drawn from a photograph.
For the next concept art: Kabuki Bu. It follows the same formula for the colored concept art. The pencil lines in the concept art meant that they drew it first with pencil and scanned it then the color on a computer or tablet they chose a base color in the concept art for the animation.
Tumblr media
This isn’t the first time they drew digitally like with kabuki bu.

Welcome, prospecting Masters, to the Fictitious Holy Grail War. This Grail War is a little different from a Normal Grail War, because no regular Heroic Spirits can be summoned. Instead, you can summon characters of fiction, and bring them to life, whether they be from books, video games, or movies.
The rules are fairly simple. You can submit potential Servants into the askbox, and I, the overseer, will decide whether they qualify or not. OCs are allowed, but only if I am given enough information. There is already at least one potential Servant per class marked with a * chosen by yours truly. Once I think we have enough, the summoned will be decided via polls.

Assuming the ones on the back row were just their attendants (lol), then who's that kid between Clovis and Marrybell? (Cos for sure that's not Julie...)
[Edit] Oh wait... it's Lila la Britannia. Clovis's lil sister.
Thanks wiki XD

Hi! I've itching to put together some list of my main tags, all ordered like in my reblogging art sub-blog. So here it is! More than a few years late, but teen me didn't have the foresight to organize their tagging from the start so here we are.
Main non-fandom organizing tags:
my thoughts This one compiles all my original content, from stray passing thoughts to full on meta and delirium on fandom, to me ocassionally commenting and adding stuff on a reblog, etc.
meta This one is about all meta I've reblogged or done ever. Regardless of fandom. Aka most of my content. Here for completionism sake and bc it excludes all other content. Feel free going mad on this tag xD
recs All my recs (or other people's that I've agreed with) on books, music, fanfics, etc.
art A relic of when I didnt have my other blog! Still interesting to browse through. Many years of reblogging pretty stuff.
playlist I don't have many reblogged but I love the ones I have here; a mix of awesome character analysis via great songs.
literature The more specialised stuff about literary genre itself, sometimes mixed with fandom other times not. Some of it is in the tag literary analysis by itself. I should order that one of these days....
fandom About fandom in general and its issues and wank! Also history of fandom stuff ^^
Now the fandom itselves! This is probably not every fandom I've posted about because my interests are wide and sometimes I post about stuff I haven't read/watched myself just because I like the sound of the reasoning (not very academia of me I know); but it should be my mains ones and I'll be adding links to the tags as I discover what I have been doing all these years.
Luckily I have my fanart blog with its fandoms as guide ;P
anime and animation
alien stage, arcane, blue eyed samurai, code geass, link click, mawaru penguindrum, puella magi madoka magica, revolutionary girl utena, sarazanmai, trigun

3b. Part 2: Gojo, Cursed Objects, and WW2
Tumblr media
Overall thesis for this project: Godzilla and Mothra create the cultural context of creatives using powerful monsters (or kaiju) to disrupt Japanese bureaucracy and society, usually to make some larger criticism.
Manga spoilers below!
In a post-Godzilla Japan, the kaiju character, the monster, often challenges and disrupts the stability of the status quo. The disruption often exposes negative traits and limitations of those in power, criticizing the authority's abilities. The kaiju might act as a party separated from other warring factions; the kaiju might be integrated into one or more of the story's main factions; and finally, there can be more than one kaiju present, each with their own individual goals. In All-Out Attack, Godzilla appears first. To stop Godzilla from destroying Japan, the three gurdian deities must be summoned: Baragon, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. I argue that the kaiju narrative not only exists beyond cinema, but that Japanese creatives use certain specifications from older works to reimagine the classic plot of Gojira (1954).
As a kaiju, Gojo represents the eventual need to step beyond the limitations those in power place on an individual. Anything with more power than the self-preserving sovereign will be seen as a threat (Rika possesses Yuta, Yuji hosts Sukuna, and both are sentenced to death). Gojo's mastery of jujutsu, and his massacre of the Higher-Ups, demonstrates a scenario where a person can evolve beyond the system. Gege uses Gojo to argue that justice or an ideal fairness cannot be found in the self-preserving system, because it will always choose to neutralize or eliminate the possibility of something greater than itself, regardless of whether it be a force of good or bad. After Shibuya, the Higher-Ups sought to contain Gojo like they have Sukuna: trapped in a cursed object, and finally beholden to their unmerciful control.
Tumblr media
Beyond the usual conventions of the kaiju narrative that I've discussed until now, there exists another important factor. The kaiju narrative must always place Japan under threat of destruction from a great power, usually by a monster. Absinthe makes the point that in the kaiju film narrative, Japan will almost always be the victim. He says that "In Gojira the monster destroys and shatters Tokyo but importantly stays and even in Mosura [(Mothra, 1961)] and Gamera [(1965)] there is this sense that the monster has taken over," emphasizing the importance for one or more of the kaiju to threaten Japan's freedom and sustentation. Demon City Shinjuku released in 1982, and was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri; the animated movie depicts Shinjuku, a special ward of Tokyo, being destroyed by Rebi Ra, then overrun by demons. During World War 2, the 1945 Tokyo air raids destroyed a vast majority of Shinjuku's infrastructure, but the railways and transit remained mostly intact. The enduring transit system aided in Shinjuku becoming the metropolitan area it exists as today.
Anime and manga overtly reference Shinjuku's dark history, often using it as a site where demons or misfortune strikes. Meta-textually, even when removed from its history as a victim of air raids, it exists near Tokyo. Placing misfortune within Shinjuku communicates the near collapse of Tokyo, Japan's heart. In Code Geass, the Britannian army destroyed Shinjuku via air raids. In the story's present, Shinjuku remains as a ruined ghetto in the now occupied Japan, which was renamed Area 11 after its defeat by Britannia. Moving past all the implications of Code Geass' story, I want to focus on Gege's use of Shinjuku as a battlefield within JJK. The final arc of JJK was titled "The Decisive Battle in the Uninhabited, Demon-Infested Shinjuku," effectively marking Shinjuku as a 'demon city.' "Demon-Infested Shinjuku" reads as a clever nod to Kawajiri, and also an important framing for the battle taking place between Sukuna and the remaining cast; everyone uses every skill they have as they participate in a clash of titans that tears the city apart. If he defeats the cast, Sukuna unleashes an unstoppable monster that will destroy Tokyo, then the rest of the world after.
In modern Japanese pop culture, Shinjuku serves as an example of a trope developed through repetition across titles. Not only does Shinjuku itself act as a trope to depict a losing battle against a stronger enemy (Gojo's defeat against Sukuna), but also as an interchangeable setting to convey an approximate danger looming over Tokyo, and more importantly, Japan. Like in All-Out Attack, the other monsters gather to defend Japan from Sukuna, the king. In both titles, the monsters do not fight to protect the Japanese government or care about it's infrastructure. The cast of monsters reduce parts of Tokyo to rubble in their fights; they must, to convey the threat that Japan faces in this awesome battle between kaiju. In All-Out Attack, the guardian deities' motivations were mostly unknown, except for a desire to kill Godzilla. In JJK's "Demon-Infested Shinjuku," the cast members come from all different walks of life, and have their own goals in mind, but they all agree that Sukuna needs to die for one reason or another.
In Jujutsu Kaisen, the kaiju takes many roles. Sukuna throws Japan's government into disarray with a devastating attack that wipes Shibuya off the face of the earth. Maki destroys an important pillar of jujutsu society's government. Gojo puts the final nail in the coffin and kills the bureaucratic powers. The kaijus act within and outside of the established government. The kaiju most importantly exposes the weakness of the setting's government, and in the case of anime and manga, the sovereign will almost always be a bureaucratic system.
Notes:
What's funny is that Yaga got the boot for simply being responsible for Gojo and Geto. They were MAD!
I think a vast majority of anime fans doubt the influence that World War 2 has on Japanese pop culture, and especially anime and manga.
Someone once mentioned to me somethin about Gege's interest in urban areas and infrastructure. I hope this person finds this update interesting!
Sukuna section(s) next!

Nonfiction Essay: How did Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) influence Code Geass (2006)? This piece looks at how Sunrise leverages a diversity of high-appeal character traits and fanservice to gain the widest possible audience, while avoiding any risky moves that might alienate conservative audiences. But does the quest for popularity risk the artistic integrity of the work? In the decades between the two shows, and the decades since, has there been noteworthy progress? Written for Geass Fragments: A Code Geass Fanzine.
