Quindi, ci stiamo avvicinando a un piccolo anniversario per me questo fine settimana. Il 5 gennaio 2000, Steve Jobs ha presentato al mondo la nuova interfaccia utente Aqua di Mac OS X al Macworld Expo.

Verso la fine della presentazione, ha mostrato il Dock. Conoscete tutti il ​​Dock, è in fondo allo schermo del vostro Mac da quello che sembra un'eternità (se lo tenete nella posizione corretta, comunque).

Il nuovo Finder (nome in codice "Millennium") a quel punto era stato scritto su Mac OS 9, perché Mac OS X non stava ancora esattamente funzionando a pieno regime. Il file system non funzionava bene, il che non è di grande aiuto quando si cerca di scrivere un'interfaccia utente su di esso. Il Dock faceva parte del Finder allora e poteva appoggiarsi a tutte le interfacce C++ di alto livello per gestire dischi e file su cui stava lavorando il resto del team. Quindi, ho iniziato su Mac OS 9, lavorando su Metrowerks Codewarrior. Il Finder era un'app Carbon, quindi abbiamo potuto effettivamente fare un bel po' di progressi iniziali su 9, prima che il sistema operativo fosse pronto per noi. Ma ho continuato a lavorare duro, costruendo il miglior molo possibile, rimanendo fedele al progetto originale e facendo frequenti viaggi negli Stati Uniti ; inizialmente ho vissuto al Cupertino Inn, di fronte all'Infinite Loop.

Potreste avermi già sentito raccontare questa storia, e mi scuso se è così. Ma è passato abbastanza tempo da far sì che la gente mi conosca solo per PCalc, e non ricordi nemmeno DragThing, per non parlare di eventi accaduti prima che alcuni di voi nascessero.

Non volevo trasferirmi negli Stati Uniti. Mi piaceva stare in Europa. Alla fine, dopo molte riflessioni, molte conversazioni notturne con mia moglie e persino l'acquisto di una guida al trasloco, ho detto di no.

Hanno detto ok allora. Diremo semplicemente a Steve che ti sei trasferito.

E così per l'anno successivo, ho volato avanti e indietro tra Cork e Cupertino, e sono rimasto lì fuori il più a lungo possibile, come consentito dalle normative. Avevo un ufficio nel corridoio del team Finder. Posso solo immaginare che Steve passasse a cercarmi, e loro dicessero che mi aveva appena mancato, mentre io venivo caricato su un aereo dall'altra parte. Dovevo venire ogni volta che c'erano dimostrazioni del Dock, ma non mi era permesso di stare nella stessa stanza di Steve, per paura che rivelassi la verità. Alla fine, il Macworld 2000 si è svolto e finalmente tutti i segreti sono stati svelati al mondo. Speravo che a questo punto non importasse più dove fossi e che finalmente potessi rilassarmi. Meno di un mese dopo, credo esattamente nel giorno del mio compleanno, ho ricevuto un'altra chiamata.

Dovevo trasferirmi a Cupertino. O altro. E questa volta, l'“altro” era che sarei stato rimosso dal Dock e dal Finder, e non mi sarebbe stato più garantito alcun lavoro interessante.

Quindi ho cortesemente rifiutato e mi sono dimesso. Circa tre settimane dopo, il resto del gruppo software rimasto a Cork è stato licenziato. Chiaramente, il piano era di sbarazzarsi di tutti, ma non potevano dirmelo in quel momento. Avrei dovuto aspettare e avrei ricevuto almeno una ricompensa...

It was a bit more difficult to make the Mac/PowerPC version of our benchmark as I needed MacOS 9 or X to run CodeWarrior 7.1 dev IDE. After realizing how bad idea was to try MacOS X (10.2) inside PearPC on Windows I’ve decided to brought a real Mac: my old Apple iBook G4 (mid-2005) which cost me about $100 ten years ago.

Apple is not much into backward compatibility these days so it was a nice surprise that with CoreWarrior 7.1 I was able to make a single binary that is executable under MacOS from version 8 to version 10.5.8.

New framework seems to have performance issues

This version of ABP for the new Safari framework unfortuantely seems to kill performance on my computers. Maybe it’s partially related to them being a bit older (one is a Mid 2011 Mini, the other is a 2012 iMac), but with ABP enabled I can’t even open a new tab/window and type a URL into the bar and expect Safari to accept the input without having to hold down the return key until it goes or wait a minute after opening a new tab or window. I also noticed that using Twitter was jumpy and lagged even with simple typing, it felt like all the dynamic content it relies on was just struggling to be processed through whatever framework Apple is forcing. Hopefully the devloper can figure out the performance issues because it’s really, really bad now.

why isn’t this working?

I have ABP and it wasn’t perfect but worked fairly well for my needs. Recently, it simply disappeared. (I see someone else said that could be from the latest iOS update, but I don’t have that on my desktop yet). When I tried to reinstall, it showed me two boxes to check. The way I read it, if you checked the box that said you wanted the icon visible in the toolbar, it would be able to read sensitive information of all kinds on any page. What good is an app of any kind that allows for that?! As it was, with only the one box checked, it only blocked very few ads, and I was still getting requests from sites to be whitelisted without being able to fnd any way to do it. I’ve got all kinds of garage showing up on my Facebook page, and you guys have ruined what was a reasonable product. WHY?

Still works for me

Almost didn’t download the new version based on the recent reviews, however after looking at the other apps here that claim to be ad blockers I didn’t’t see too many alternatives. I decided to go ahead and get the new version and so far its pretty much the same as the old version, lots of ads blocked. I’m happy, just make sure you go through the simple set-up.

After much research, I understand the issue with Apple changing the rules on the devs so they had to build this app from scratch. Works well for me so far, except for one annoying problem. I use Yahoo mail and it's not hiding the ad that appears in the top line of the inbox even with unchecking the Acceptable Ads box, which is super annoying. I know the devs are watching these reviews, so if someone can point me to an extension or something that will fix that, I'd appreciate it. Was using AdGuard and it fixed that problem, but that app behaves like spyware and is constantly running in the background even after you close Safari.

I’m trying to port our old-computer-benchmarking project to another platform – Mac OS. With a floppy disk drive as the only way to transfer files from/to my PowerBook 1400cs/166 (and few 68k Macs) I’ve decided to use an emulator with Mac OS 8.1 and CodeWarrior dev IDE. This is my first experience with development for Mac OS without ‘X’. At least now I know that the Mac OS memory management is really as bad as Wikipedia says. Anyway the 68k version is done (and tested) and it was definitely an interesting experience.
