COTL Post Production – Workflow

The above image pretty much sums up our workflow once we moved into post. This wasn’t exactly anyone’s fault, we were just unsure of the correct process and we managed to complicate everything by moving between at least four different softwares. It was defnitely a learning experience on what not to do, and it furthered my understanding of the post production process which I had little knowledge of before.

A big challenge for me was when we reversed a few steps and reedited some of the beginning of the film to make it slightly longer. This of course meant I had to resync all the sound design I had already done. It was possible and not massively time consuming once I figured out the best way to do it, however it was a kind of “oh my god I want to throw this computer out the window” siutation.

Our communication could have been better throughout the post process. This probably would have helped our workflow as well. I am overall pleased with the result though as Ben Mc did his best at cutting down the edit by a good few minutes. Sam and Eilis’ colour grade was stunning compared to the original footage. Sam also did a great and essential job of masking out things like cars and fire exit signs. The sound design was the most collabrative as both Bens helped me with foley and everyone helped with the Voice Over and music recording. Ben Mc also sat down with me for a few of my editing sessions, providing moral and creative support.

In the future I think I will have a clearer idea of how post production workflow should look.

1. I think the number one thing I'm most proud of is my Destiel Hallelujah AMV. I spent about 60-70 hours over a few days learning how to work video editing software for the first time. I think it turned out great!

5. Honestly??? Havent done anything for gomens in a while, but this collabrative crack fic Year of The Rat: Cheesus Christ was so much fun to make! It's full of fun jokes and I enjoyed my part in it. I'm still grateful for @joyfulomens for organizing that, it was great

6. Speaking of gomens, this Globe theatre romeo and juliet one shot Just As Sweet was the first time I felt proud of something I'd written. And I love that I can see how much better I've gotten since then

Live: Final Conclusion

Overall - I am super happy with the outcome for the project. I think both the still and moving content is strong and in my opinion looks legitimate. I also think i have created content that fits to the target audience and the message this album wants to portray to its listeners. 

The prep side of this project was very important. Producing and working alongside DOP Henry Gill - I learnt alot about film and all the important factors that they have - which as photographers you may not have - creating storyboards and kit lists for days. 

I had problems finding suitable locations for reasonable price - but I stuck it out and contacted EVERY PLACE in London and in the end Islington Boxing Club was incredible. 

Since the start the whole concept and message adapted which meant castings etc had to adjust. 

The shoot day went extremely smooth - everyone was extremely professional. We stuck to timings very well, but still had fun and had a good time on set. In terms of direction - as I am used to directing fashion, i felt quite comfortable in their role. I knew what I wanted from the subject and the message and image i wanted her to portray so I enjoyed doing this. 

The editing process again was very smooth - I worked with editor Monique Farkas who I have worked with before. She is extremely talented and works very efficiently. I sat with her for 2 days straight and we did the edit and colour grade. 

Graphics part - this is really not my forte. I dont have a very good eye when its come to graphics nor do i know the software to use it. So i collabrated with graphic student josh welch - i wanted very simple but still look professional and legitmate. So did research of other posters and CDS to see how they look. 

The printing process wasnt extremley smooth sailing - we had to learn how to use the UV printer in uni but after we booked a session and learnt from the technican we got the hang of it. Plus i wasnt sure where to print the booklet - i was looking online and was being quoted 50 - 60 pounds plus for 1 booklet. However in the end i found a place i had used a couple of years ago called mixam which was really good and happy with the quality.

filling 90 seconds ( we did a 40 second cut which i think works much better for the pace of the video) 

graphics + layouts 

what would i do differently: 

- remember to think that when a video is going to be cut extremly quick that you want ALOTTT of footage to fill 90 seconds. 

-possibly could of brought in a set designer to help with the location 

- sound designer so i could share it

I’m really unsure as to what’s going to happen after both our characters have merged into the same world and have to interact with each other, but I suppose when they did that with Nickelodeon shows it was pretty exciting, so maybe it’ll have the same effect. 

the first year, I'd successfully made two rigged characters of birds and moved them around which was a fun and daunting challenge, so I'm feeling hopeful for this module where I'm able to focus on the character and rig rather than a whole scene and familiarising myself with my first 3D software. Despite this, I’m not sure how good I’ll be at animating the character as I'm not a great actor myself, but with practice, I might be ok. I really like the idea of making something that doesn't necessarily look real, feel real through movement and personality. What's funny is that this is why animation interested me more than any other arty degree. 

So I'm hoping to produce something good enough to be in a section of my showreel as the second project not only shows the ability to character design, model, rig, AND animate but also teamwork. I’m honestly excited by both parts of this module, but I think the second part will be harder and more beneficial, and maybe more rewarding.

Which do you like better and why?

By default, if I had to choose one word processor over the other it would have to be Microsoft Word. The simple fact is I grew up using microsoft word in about 90% of my class projects and reports. With that being said, the array of templates and tools available could assist you in the most complex doctumentations. Yes it may have some disadvantages compared to other word processing platforms, but the Pros crush the Cons in my opinon.

Note why a person would use one program over the other programs?

If a person was to be partisipating in a group report or some kind of collabrative project that needed accessable to all parties, it would be best practice to use Google Docs. Its collabrative share feature is unmatched. After exploring Libre Office word processor I noticed that it had the same basic functions of Microsoft Word and the best part is the software was FREE!!! Libre Office is a growing open-source program that would be a great substitute word processor for Microsoft Word if your working with limited funding. Microsoft Word is a one-stop-shop when it comes to word processing. Any formatted document you could possibly need just clicks away. That's probably why it has a large community of users.

►Microsoft Word - Endless amount of customization tools. Widely used. ►Libre Office - Free. Open-source. Can upload directly to Google Docs. ►Google Docs - Simultaneous collaborations.

What are the disadvantages?

►Microsoft Word - Expensive, Complicated for beginners. ►Libre Office - None as of right now. ►Google Docs - Limited amount of customization tools. Internet needed.
