And here we are with the final full decade featured on this blog. All throughout the 2010's retrospectives, we have been focusing a lot on how streaming and internet culture in general is shaping pop music. Now, that can be seen more than ever. Especially with the number one song this year, Lil Nas X's Old Town Road -- one of the first viral TikTok songs we'll be seeing. Old Town Road isn't just notable for how it took off through meme culture or how TikTok would soon come to be one of the main forces behind pop success, but the track was also controversial for how it blurred the lines between genres. Not through aesthetic or sound (which is nothing new), but through marketing. After reaching number nineteen on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, the magazine disqualified the song from counting as the genre. It should be mentioned that country circles have a history of drawing clear lines around what counts as their genre. There was a time when many country music tastemakers considered artists like Johnny Cash or John Denver to be too rock or pop for country. In fact during the 1975 CMAs, Charlie Rich burned John Denver's card after announcing him as the winner. And if it even needs to be said, this tension is even more noticeable when you factor race into the mix. Especially when you factor in how country being classified as a "white" genre was a marketing strategy less than a hundred years ago. Here's an article that went more in depth on the issue in response to the Old Town Road debate.

Obviously, this is a lot of discourse and debate to drop onto a short TikTok meme song. But since this blog is essentially about how music is marketed, I couldn't not bring it up. Because Old Town Road wasn't controversial just because it was a song that used both country and rap influences (country had been incorporating more hip-hop production into their sound all decade), but it was largely controversial because Lil Nas X wasn't a country artist. This is a concept I touched on briefly during the rise of nu metal, but the definition of a genre can change depending on whether you're evaluating the sound as music or as marketing. And if you're in the world of marketing, the definition of "country music" is "music performed by country artists within the country music industry". But with the internet making it more possible than ever for people outside the industry to gain pop success, the lines are allowed to become even more blurred.

Unlike the start of the decade, the pop music now is much more low-key and moody. The popularity of trap lends well to a darker sound, and even pop tracks like Billie Eilish's Bad Guy and Ariana Grande's 7 Rings are taking influence from this production style. Lo-fi music and "bedroom pop" are now becoming the go-to sound. More production styles that encourage more individual, introspective listening. Music that sounds like it could have been produced by one person in their bedroom. And maybe the timing was just right. Because soon, most people would have to make their music out of their bedrooms.

“What’re you thinking of darling?” Freddy whispers, his head tilted slightly so he can keep his arms around his girlfriend but still see her face.

Y/n smiles as she keeps gazing into the distance, blinking slowly as she takes in the sight of the Eiffel Tower from their hotel balcony.

“Just can’t believe it” y/n says quietly.

Freddy smiles and crooks his head down to kiss her neck innocently, “can’t believe what exactly?”

She breaks eye contact with the scenic view to look at her boyfriend, “that I’m here, in Paris, with you”.

He licks his bottom lip before sucking it in between his teeth as he smiles to himself contentedly.

“Angel, get off your phone” Freddy teased, tossing a French fry at her softly.

Y/n laughed, tossing it back at him with a shake of her head, “I’m looking at something!”

Freddy scoffed jokingly, “should I be jealous? You look like you’re going to melt”.

She smirked and looked up at him before shrugging.

He raised an eyebrow at her, “I’m really hoping it’s another puppy chewing on shoelaces again”.

Y/n giggled and shook her head, glancing down at the photo on her screen.

Freddy pouted, “looovvee, who is it? Is it a Jonas brother?“

She laughed loudly, “I’ve never looked at any of the Jonas brothers that way, Freddy! In fact I’ve only looked at this person like that”.

He puckered his lips and squinted at her playfully.

Y/n leaned over the table, kissing his puckered lips faintly before setting her phone before him and grabbing a fresh French fry from his plate.

In the daze of the kiss, Freddy almost didn’t see that she’d left him her phone.

He smiled at her before looking down, hoping to see a photo of some random animal misbehaving.

However his grin only widened until his cheeks hurt when he saw his own face on her screen.

It was a candid shot of him she evidently got when he was smiling earlier.

“The only one” she repeated, smiling at him.

“Hey Freddy!” Y/n gleefully blurted, prompting him to look up from his phone at her.

She glared and pouted at him.

“Well that was a quick 180” Freddy laughed.

She gasped with a smile forming as she quickly lifted her phone making him even more confused.

“Ugh, Freeeedddyyy” she sighed and lowered her phone.

“What did I even do?” He laughed, grabbing her free hand.

“I somehow don’t have one photo this trip of you actually smiling your normal smile” she pouted.

Freddy ran his other hand over his face as he chuckled at her.

“Pleeeaaasseee baby?” She pleaded.

Freddy nodded with a smile but as she lifted her phone he switched to a smirk.

She rolled her eyes but took the photo.

“…Demjin…” she grumbled jokingly.

“Wait, okay let’s try this” Freddy said, pouring some water from his water bottle onto y/n’s hands.

“Freddy?” she giggled, grinning up at him.

He leaned down and kissed her forehead, “it’ll help the sand stick better for the shot”.

She nodded in understanding, putting her hands into the sand under her knees, “but… you know…”

Y/n bit her lip as she laughed and brought one hand out of the sand to point to the ocean beside them, “you didn’t need to use your filtered water, the ocean’s right there”.

Freddy blushed and hid his face behind his camera with a smile, “bring them up the same way as last time”.

Y/n smirked at him changing the subject but happily obeyed and posed the way he wanted for the photo he had in mind.

“No, no, no” y/n panicked with a loud chain of laughter, “Freddy! I’m going to fall on my butt”.

Freddy chuckles, slowly lowering y/n back to the ground, making sure the blades on her skates are balanced against the ice.

He holds her in place as he skates around to her front, “I wouldn’t let that happen”.

Her frozen cheeks warm slightly, “I think you forget how clumsy I am, sunshine”.

Freddy grins at the nickname, “oh, I’m well aware of how clumsy you are, dear. You nearly tripped putting the skates on”.

“Yet you’re lifting me in the air over ice” She scolds, the warmth on her cheeks spreading as she recalls Freddy having to stabilize her earlier so she didn’t face-plant into the ground.

“As long as you’re in my arms, you’re safe” he promised sincerely, grabbing her gloved hand and skating backwards do he could face her as he pulled her with him.

“Don’t you dare Frederick” y/n warned lightheartedly.

Freddy smirked and jokingly lifted the sling shot up further, having no real intent to use it.

“Mr. Carter, I’m warning you” She laughed, shaking her head as she tried to get him back to letting her take his photo.

He grinned and winked at her, pulling the elastic band on the device towards himself.

Y/n silently snapped a candid photo as he laughed and held the band taught.

“You let go of that, and the acorn hits me, and you will get no kisses for a week” y/n threatened weakly; knowing she wouldn’t see it through.

Freddy knew it was unlikely as well but he wasn’t risking it, quickly lowering the device and pointing it behind him so the acorn plunked into the water instead.

Y/n laughed, pleased she won the ridiculous debate.

The end of his trench coat waived in the air as Freddy spun towards her, pulling her in for a delicate kiss.
