Gemstones Episode 2.9. Continued: A Perfect Christian, the Lion King, twinks, and lovers in old photographs

Previous:  Episode 2.9: Who killed Thaniel?  Will Keefe ever get a place at the table?  Can we see some Gemstone alums naked?

Keefe stands alone: Keefe sits next to Kelvin on the way to the Zion's Landing ground-breaking party.  He stands next to BJ while the siblings perform.  But afterwards, he goes off to make new friends: he tries to impress them by doing the Worm, and is upset when he fails.  

Why doesn't he interact with Kelvin, or anyone in the family?  It's as if they told him "You can come, but don't be seen with us.  We don't want people thinking that you and Kelvin are together." 

Baby Billy Returns: As Tiffany sits in a cabana, Baby Billy appears!  He tells her "I'm back for good,"  Judy isn't having it "You've got a lot of nerve coming here after what you did!" 

He ignores Judy and asks Tiffany to take him back.  She refuses to answer, saying that she has to go to the bathroom.

Keefe and the Perfect Christian: Meanwhile, Keefe and Joe Jonas, the world's most perfect Christian, head to the same porta-potty.  They are so busy gazing at the guy who just exited that they both reach for the handle at the same time, and clasp hands.  It is accidental, but still a strangely erotic moment.  

Tiffany pushes them aside and rushes into the porta-potty.  Joe Jonas and Keefe continue to flirt as she goes into labor.   Don't they, like, have to go?

The Lion King: Later, a crowd has gathered around the porta-potty.  Didn't anyone fetch a doctor? 

Baby Billy rushes up and asks Keefe, Pontius, and Abraham if they've seen Tiffany.  They point. She said she was going to the bathroom, you dolt! Why did it take you so long to figure it out?

Tiffany emerges, stating that she had her baby: it fell into the toilet.Gross callback to the "toilet baby" discussion.  Baby Billy reaches down and pulls the baby out.  Then, in a scene reflecting Simba's birth in The Lion King, he holds it over his head for the crowd to see.  Everyone applauds. 

Lyle's Revenge: On the beach, Jesse, still unaware of Lyle's involvement, is handing over the investment money.  Suddenly a woman appears, yelling at Lyle about the disappearance of her husband: "He was working with you, to get information on the Butterfields!  He told me all about it!"  

Finally Jesse starts to figure it out.  He confronts Lyle, who admits to sending the Cycle Ninjas to kill Eli --  he thought he was "doing you a solid," freeing up some money so Jesse could invest.  Besides, hasn't he often wished that his father would hurry up and die?  No, of course not.  But, now, worried that he might tell, Lyle attacks. They fight, and Jesse hits and kills him with a rock from the David and Goliath slingshot he used to threaten Junior. 

He rushes to his family -- um, hang on for a moment. Check out Kelvin's ultra-femme outfit and mannerisms.  He's really come out loud and proud.  He was the macho Messiah of the Musclemen an episode ago, and now he's my Aunt Sadie. 

And why isn't Keefe there?  He's at the porta-potties, of course, but there isn't even a chair that he vacated.

Jesse announces that he's murdered someone.  The family follows him to the beach, but Lyle is alive, and Lindsey is armed!  She shoots BJ in the femoral artery, and forces the others to swim out into the ocean.  BJ will bleed out in 2-4 minutes unless he gets first aid.  He's doomed!

Lots of Reconciliations: One month later, we see Chad and his wife reconciling at Amber's marital group. I didn't even know that was a plot arc.   

Then Judy and BJ, who has miraculously recovered, say goodbye to Baby Billy, Tiffany, and baby Lionel as they head home. 

Nobody ain't inviting no kids to the steam showers:   Kelvin and Keefe  have started a Youth Squad for 12-15 year olds. "The whole time we've been searching for our calling," Kelvin says, "It's been right under our noses: these beautiful, innocent children."

He continues, evoking a Judean retreat: "We could groom these kids into the next generation of muscle men."  Keefe suddenly realizes that people could get the wrong idea, and suggests getting chaperones and permission slips.But Kelvin isn't ready to start planning yet; he's just brainstorming, thinking of the possibilities.  

I read fan responses to this scene before actually watching it: anger, disgust, and dismay: "Please don't let them be creeps.  Please don't let them be creeps.  Please don't let them be creeps."  The "They're straight buddies" camp was ecstatic, because who would give gay characters lines like that?  When I watched, I was upset by the structure: everyone else gets a heartfelt scene, and the guys get pedophile jokes. But one fan who grew up a queer kid in an Evangelical church set me straight, so to speak.  I paraphrase a bit:

This IS a touching scene!  Friggin' homophobe, thinking that because the guys are gay, they must like little boys!  

The kids are not dressed in revealing outfits, and at least one of them is a girl!  Kelvin and Keefe  do not say one single thing that suggest an erotic interest in the "little angels."  Keefe notes that a particularly muscular boy is popular with other boys, and Kelvin fiddles with his "wedding ring," to let you know that he and Keefe are partners. 

The Youth Squad is a perfectly legitimate way for them to combine their interests in youth ministry and physical fitness.  Note that the kids are not training for bodybuilding, which is not permitted for anyone under age 15.  They are doing strength training exercises, which are recommended for children aged seven and up.   

Plus it makes structural sense.  The heterosexist trajectory includes job, house, wife, and kids.  Baby Billy does not become a man until he holds his infant son.  BJ and Judy have no children of their own, so they adopt Tiffany. Nurturing children is the final step in Kelvin's movement into manhood

Lovers in old photographs:  Eli returns to Memphis, where he is funding Junior's new wrestling studio.  Arm on Eli's back, Junior shows him around: "Stadium seating...just need some asses to fill  'em."  

They pause before an old black-and-white photo of Glendon Marsh and his wrestling crew.  Young Eli, the Marauder Kid, stands masked in the back row, next to Young Junior.  The camera closes in on the two.  Eli smiles. The end.

- It depends on what I'm working on at the moment. Currently? Jonas Quinn from Stargate SG-1. Or the Kirk brothers from Star Trek. (In the Kelvin timeline specifically.) But it definitely varies depending on what fandom we're talking about.

14. What’s your favorite fandom to write for?

- Ooh boy. That's a rough one. Probably either Stargate or Star Trek. I just feel more connected to those fandoms than I do to some of the others that I've written for. (Don't get me wrong though, I'll probably go back and write more for Danny Phantom or Perry Mason eventually. But for now, I've found where I'm most comfortable.)

16. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)?

- I really don't know....I don't think I have any guilty pleasure tropes, but maybe I just can't think of any off the top of my head. (That happens to me more than you might expect.)

He watched as Keefe crossed their shared room, his dark eyes scanning every inch of him silently. He forced himself not to move a muscle as Keefe threw off his giant sun hat, and took several steps closer to him, close enough for his breath to tickle Kelvin’s cheek.

Their eyes met.

“Did you…go swimmin’ with your clothes on again? ‘Cause I heard that ain’t the safest and—”

“The Lissons held Daddy and the rest of us at gunpoint,” Kelvin blurted out, his breathing labored. “Made us walk into the sea ‘cause they’re snakes in the grass. Frauds, charlatans. They—they’re behind who shot at Jesse and Amber and nearly killed Daddy. Lyle did in that reporter guy too. They just wanted Gemstone money and didn’t care who they hurt to get it. They’re no-good, self-righteous—”

“You’re shakin’,” Keefe cut across Kelvin’s rant, darting into the adjoining bathroom and grabbing one of the large, fluffy white towels.

Before Kelvin could protest, he was wrapped up in it and the strong, firm grip of Keefe’s hands rubbing his shoulders, up and down, up and down.

“Are you okay?” Keefe asked in his usual gentle tone, but his eyes gave away his worry, his gaze lingering over Kelvin for any visible sign of injuries. “Are you hurt?”

“I-I’m fine, Keefe. It…BJ got shot in the leg. Daddy’s gettin’ him and Judy airlifted to some hospital right now. Aunt Tiffany and Uncle Baby Billy are hitchin’ a ride with baby Lionel too. Joe Jonas is keepin’ the guests calm and distracted.”

Keefe nodded, taking his rasped explanation in his stride, carefully steering him backward until his knees hit the edge of one of the double beds. Slowly, he lowered him to sit, kneeling down in front of him and raising a smaller towel to his hair, running it over his soaked strands.

Kelvin sat motionless, eyes closing against the feel of his friend’s fingers detangling and drying his hair.

“They got away,” he admitted after a few beats of silence, his voice small, eyes still closed.

“They won’t get far,” Keefe assured him, still quiet but firm, “the Lord will deliver unto them their comeuppance for their wicked deeds and preying on your and your family’s kindness.”

Kelvin hoped, prayed that he was right.

“We should get you out of these wet clothes, into a hot shower, and find you something to eat. You’ve had a shock,” Keefe murmured, his breath brushing against the shell of Kevlin’s ear.

He suppressed a sudden shiver that he knew wasn’t only caused by the damp fabric sticking to his skin.

“Daddy says we should dine among the regular folk, keep smilin’, let them know everything is okay. Don’t want a panic or nothin’.”

He opened his eyes as Keefe’s hand stilled in his hair.

Their faces were a few inches apart.

Kelvin could count his eyelashes.

One. Two. Three. Four—

“I think…I think you should…dine with us back home too. Permanently.”

It was something he had been thinking about for longer than he’d ever admit. Even to himself. Just one of many other things he didn’t admit to himself.

He had first asked Keefe to accompany him to lunch the night of his successful bearing of the Cross but may have let him believe it was a special, every once in a while kinda thing. A treat to not overindulge in.

He still wasn’t sure why.

Keefe stared at him, his dark eyes warm but mouth downturned in confusion.

“You mean upstairs-church-lunch at Jason’s Steakhouse? But I thought that it was only family that—”

“You are family, Keefe,” Kelvin cut in before he could lose his nerve. “And I want—I’d like you to be by my side. Every time. If…if you’d like that too…as well.”

This was something he could admit to. Not the whole truth, but a part of it.

Their eyes locked, barely a second ticking by that somehow still felt like forever.

“I would be honored.”

Something shook loose in Kelvin’s chest at that, he letting out a relieved if a little uneven laugh.

“Okay, good. Great. I—I’ll just go take a shower and we can head down to dinner, then.”

Keefe’s lips upturned in a small but sincere smile as he nodded, beginning to stand. Kelvin’s hand shot out, fingers closing around his wrist and squeezing before he could stop himself.

He could feel Keefe’s heavy gave on him as he stared down at his newly-repaired hand, struggling to sort through his jumbled thoughts and form a coherent sentence.

He could have died today. Been shot and killed, along with his family, and Keefe would have been left behind. Safe, yes, but never knowing…never knowing how much Kelvin really—

“Save me some of that cornbread. Potato salad too. We’re not eatin’ light today.”

Fighting a wince at his cowardice, he slowly raised his gaze back up, unsurprised to see his friend, his best friend in the whole world (and something even more that he was afraid to examine too closely), already looking at him.

“Of course. I’ll grab a puddin’ cup too. Before all the chocolate ones are gone.”

Like always, Keefe seemed to know what Kelvin was saying even when he himself wasn’t completely sure.

With that, Kelvin let his wrist go and he rose slowly from his knees, pushing himself up with his palms braced against Kelvin’s thighs, their eyes never leaving one another’s.

Silence hung between them.

“Get…get some strawberry ones too. I-I know they’re your favourite,” Kelvin mumbled, feeling oddly breathless, forcing himself to stand too, his legs a little wobbly as he made his way over toward the bathroom.

“I will,” Keefe called after him. “Enjoy your shower. I’ll leave fresh clothes out on your bed.”

Kelvin nodded, keeping his back turned as he took a deep breath and stepped into the bathroom, closing the door with a snap and leaning back against it.

That warm twisting in his stomach made its familiar appearance, but like always, Kelvin shoved it down. Now was not the time. Just like all those other times weren’t either. Which, in recent months, seemed like every second of every day.

Because deep down, Kelvin knew what Keefe was to him. His number one disciple. The most impressive feather in his cap. His ultimate success story. His best friend. The man he wanted by his side at upstairs church lunch and pretty much everywhere else. His…his new kinda family that made his abdomen hot and his heart hammer in his chest.

But those weren’t thoughts for now.

Now he had to get ready and get back to his duties as a Gemstone.

But someday, maybe, it would be time.

Time for Kelvin to sort through those thoughts, those unspoken truths that he had been denying himself for a while now.

Because what Jesus the Savior once said about the truth was, well, true.

It shall set you free.

I was bored, so I thought it might be fun to recommend some fics! How will I be doing this you might ask, well by rating them on a scale of 1-10 Of course!

Reason: Good Dad Jack Fenton!!! Oh how I love a good fic where Jack shows he's a competent man and father. This is a top teir example of what that looks like. One of my favorites. It makes me happy🙂

Unveiled by DarkNymfa 9/10

Reason: I have so many emotions with this one! It's got Jack being a good dad, and a smart guy. It shows the betrayal Jack feels at finding out about Vlad. It's a good read. The writing is wonderful, and the characters are well written. (Sorry if that doesn't make sense) In all, I can't recommend this one enough.

Here I Sit Alone by Deaths_mortal_enemy 11/10

Reason: Okay. I might be biased for this one since @deaths-true-mortal-enemy wrote it specifically for me....but it's short and sweet. It gives an interesting and unique spin on the concept of Space!Danny. It shows how big and vast and empty space can be, with wonderful descriptions and a melancholy tone. I love it.💙

Body Horror TW

Reason: If you're reading Danny Phantom fanfiction, and you've never read anything by @dp-marvel94 them what are you doing with your life? I don't usually read body horror fics, cause horror in general isn't my thing. But this fic is kind of the exception. I really enjoyed it, even if I was cringing a little. (Sympathy cringe. Not a bad cringe. It was a REALLY good fic.)

Burger's ABCs by Deaths_mortal_enemy 9/10

Reason: It’s unfinished...(I'm looking at you for that @deaths-true-mortal-enemy 👀) But it's a fun collection of drabbles about everyone's favorite DA, Hamilton Burger. And I love that. It's a very cute fic.

The Case of the Chance Meeting by Kitsune_Scribe 9/10

Reason: I don't read many ship-fics. They just aren't my thing. But, I make an exception for Burger/Della fics. And this one does not disappoint. I loved every second of it. It's adorable. There's stargazing, snow, and just cozy vibes. Honestly, I think that if you're looking to check out this ship, this might be the perfect first fic for it.💙

Star Trek:✨️

(TNG) and i only sink deeper the deeper i think by thunder_and_stars 7/10

Spoilers: Through Season 1 of TNG

Reason: Set during and right after Riker was grabbed by the alien monster in "Skin of Evil," this one shows the panic and fear that Will must have been going through. Honestly, I loved it. Riker is one of my favorites, and it's hard to find really good fics that center around him. So it was nice to find this one. The writing was really good. The emotions were running high. Would recommend.👌🏻

(Kelvin Timeline/AOS) In Good Hands by Aini_NuFire 8½/10

TW Injury Descriptions and blood (not super graphic, but I prefer to err on the side of caution)

Reason: Hurt Bones. Who doesn't love some good old fashioned hurt Bones? The writing is really good, and I'm always a sucker for Jim and Spock caring for Bones. If you don't like the thought of giant scorpions though, you may want to skip this one.

Endless Fascination by badly_knitted 9/10

Spoilers: Through Season 6 of SG1.

Reason: I love Jonas Quinn. I don't care if he's only on one season. He's a great character. This fic is short and fun. It shows Jonas' love for the weather channel and his interest in Earth culture.

Survivor's Guilt by ChronicBookworm 8/10

Spoilers: Through Season 6 and seasons 9/10 of SG1.

Reason: Jonas' reaction to Langara's destruction by the Ori. If Jonas never left, and had to deal with the knowledge that his homeworld was just...gone. The dynamic between Jonas and Daniel is amazing. (Always a fun dynamic if you ask me) The writing is really good. The characters are believable. All in all a really good fic and enjoyable read.

Five things SG1 won't do, no matter what by ivorygates 7/10

Spoilers: Through Season 9 of SG1

Reason: This is a very interesting look into the psyche of each of the members of SG1 in Seasons 9 and 10. I love the introspective nature of it. It feels very in character (which is always a plus.) It's short and sweet, at only 462 words. I really like this one a lot. :)
