A fantasy read-list: A-2
Fantasy read-list
Part A: Ancient fantasy
2) Mythological fantasy (other mythologies)
Beyond the Greco-Roman mythology, which remained the main source and main influence over European literature for millenia, two other main groups of myths had a huge influence over the later “fantasy” genres.
# On one side, the mythology of Northern Europe (Nordic/Scandinavian, Germanic, but also other ones such as Finnish). When it comes to Norse mythology, two works are the first names that pop-up: the Eddas. Compilations of old legends and mythical poems, they form the main sources of Norse myths. The oldest of the two is the Poetic Edda, or Elder Edda, an ancient compilation of Norse myths and legends in verse. The second Edda is the Prose Edda, so called because it was written in prose by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson (alternate names being Snorri’s Edda or the Younger Edda). Sorri Sturluson also wrote numerous other works of great importance, such as Heimskringla (a historical saga depicting the dynasties of Norse kings, starting with tales intermingled with Norse mythology, before growing increasingly “historically-accurate”) or the Ynglinga saga - some also attributed to him the Egil’s Saga.
Other “tales of the North” include, of course, Beowulf, one of the oldest English poems of history, and the most famous version of the old Germanic legend of the hero Beowulf ; the Germanic Völsunga saga and Nibelungenlied ; as well as the Kalevala - which is a bit late, I’ll admit, it was compiled in the 19th century, so it is from a very different time than the other works listed here, but it is the most complete and influential attempt at recreating the old Finnish mythology.
# On the other side, the Celtic mythologies. The two most famous are, of course, the Welsh and the Irish mythologies (the third main branch of Celtic religion, the Gaul mythology, was not recorded in texts).
For Welsh mythology, there is one work to go: the Mabinogion. It is one of the most complete collections of Welsh folktales and legends, and the earliest surviving Welsh prose stories - though a late record feeling the influence of Christianization over the late. It is also one of the earliest appearances of the figure of King Arthur, making it part of the “Matter of Britain”, we’ll talk about later.
For Irish mythology, we have much, MUCH more texts, but hopefully they were already sorted in “series” forming the various “cycles” of Irish mythologies. In order we have: The Mythological Cycle, or Cycle of the Gods. The Book of Invasions, the Battle of Moytura, the Children of Lir and the Wooing of Etain. The Ulster Cycle, mostly told through the epic The Cattle-Raid of Cooley. The Fianna Cycle, or Fenian Cycle, whose most important work would be Tales of the Elders of Ireland. And finally the Kings’ Cycle, with the famous trilogy of The Madness of Suibhne, The Feast of Dun na nGed, and The Battle of Mag Rath.
Another famous Irish tale not part of these old mythological cycles, but still defining the early/medieval Irish literature is The Voyage of Bran.
# While the trio of Greco-Roman, Nordic (Norse/Germanic) and Celtic mythologies were the most influential over the “fantasy literature” as a we know it today, other mythologies should be talked about - due to them either having temporary influences over the history of “supernatural literature” (such as through specific “fashions”), having smaller influences over fantasy works, or being used today to renew the fantasy genre.
The Vedas form the oldest religious texts of Hinduism, and the oldest texts of Sanskrit literature. They are the four sacred books of the early Hinduist religion: the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda and the Atharvaveda. What is very interesting is that the Vedas are tied to what is called the “Vedic Hinduism”, an ancient, old form of Hinduism, which was centered around a pantheon of deities not too dissimilar to the pantheons of the Greeks, Norse or Celts - the Vedas reflect the form of Hinduist religion and mythology that was still close to its “Indo-European” mythology roots, a “cousin religion” to those of European Antiquity. Afterward, there was a big change in Hinduism, leading to the rise of a new form of the religion (usually called Puranic if my memory serves me well), this time focused on the famous trinity of deities we know today: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
The classic epics and supernatural novels of China have been a source of inspiration for more Asian-influenced fantasy genres. Heavily influenced and shaped by the various mythologies and religions co-existing in China, they include: the Epic of Darkness, the Investiture of the Gods, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, or What the Master does not Speak of - as well as the most famous of them all, THE great epic of China, Journey to the West. If you want less fictionized, more ancient sources, of course the “Five Classics” of Confucianism should be talked about: Classic of Poetry, Book of Documents, Book of Rites, Book of Changes, as well as Spring and Autumn Annals (though the Classic of Poetry and Book of Documents would be the more interesting one, as they contain more mythological texts and subtones - the Book of Changes is about a divination system, the Book of Rites about religious rites and courtly customs, and the Annals is a historical record). And, of course, let’s not forget to mention the “Four Great Folktales” of China: the Legend of the White Snake, the Butterfly Lovers, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, as well as Lady Meng Jiang.
# As for Japanese mythology, there are three main sources of information that form the main corpus of legends and stories of Japan. The Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters), a chronicle in which numerous myths, legends and folktales are collected, and which is considered the oldest literary work of Japan ; the Nihon Shoki, which is one of the oldest chronicles of the history of Japan, and thus a mostly historical document, but which begins with the Japanese creation myths and several Japanese legends found or modified from the Kojiki ; and finally the Fudoki, which are a series of reports of the 8th century that collected the various oral traditions and local legends of each of the Japanese provinces.
# The Mesopotamian mythologies are another group not to be ignored, as they form the oldest piece of literature of history! The legends of Sumer, Akkadia and Babylon can be summed up in a handful of epics and sacred texts - the first of all epics!. You have the three “rival” creation myths: the Atra-Hasis epic for the Akkadians, the Eridu Genesis for the Sumerians and the Enuma Elish story for the Babylonians. And to these three creation myths you should had the two hero-epics of Mesopotamian literature: on one side the story of Adapa and the South Wind, on the other the one and only, most famous of all tales, the Epic of Gilgamesh.
# And of course, this read-list must include... The Bible. Beyond the numerous mythologies of Antiquity with their polytheistic pantheons and complex set of legends, there is one book that is at the root of the European imagination and has influenced so deeply European culture it is intertwined with it... The Bible. European literary works are imbued with Judeo-Christianity, and as such fantasy works are also deeply reflective of Judeo-Christian themes, legends, motifs and characters. So you have on one side the Ancient Testament, the part of the Bible that the Christians have in common with the Jews (though in Judaism the Ancient Testament is called the “Torah”) - the most famous and influential parts of the Ancient Testament/Torah being the first two books, Genesis (the creation myth) and Exodus (the legend of Moses). And on the other side you have the exclusively Christian part of the Bible, the New Testament - with its two most influential parts being the Gospels (the four canonical records of the life of Jesus, the Christ) and The Book of Revelation (the one people tend to know by its flashier name... The Apocalypse).

Final Fantasy (1987)ファイナルファンタジー
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Date: December 18, 1987 Platform: Game Boy Advance / MSX / PlayStation Portable / Nintendo Entertainment System / PlayStation / WonderSwan Color / Wii Shop / PC / iPhone / PlayStation Network (PSP) / iPad / Android / Windows Phone / Nintendo 3DS eShop / PlayStation Network (Vita) Developer: Square Enix / Squaresoft / TOSE Co., Ltd. Publisher: Square Enix / Squaresoft / Nintendo / Micro Cabin Co. Genre: Role-Playing Theme: Fantasy / Medieval Franchises: Final Fantasy Also known as: FF1: Final Fantasy I / Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood / Mobius Final Fantasy / Final Fantasy XIV Online Type: Crossover
Summary:
Final Fantasy is Square Enix's longest running and most popular role-playing franchise. First premiering on December 18, 1987 with the original Final Fantasy, it has only increased in popularity over the last 35 years. Inspired by Enix's Dragon Warrior, he took the last of Square's money and developed the game. It sold 400,000 units, kicking off what has become one of the best-selling video game franchises in history. This series has had several spin-offs, some of which are Final Fantasy Adventure (which went on to become the Mana series), Final Fantasy Tactics, a series of turn-based strategy RPGs, and even several games starring the Final Fantasy mascot, the cute, ostrich-like chocobo. Additionally, the first few games of Squaresoft's SaGa series were given "Final Fantasy Legend" titles when they were released in North America because of Final Fantasy's recognizable name.A Chocobo
Since its inception, the series has branched out into portable games, action spin-offs, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, and even games for mobile phones. Originally, each new Final Fantasy game introduced to players an entirely new world, storyline, and set of characters. However, since Final Fantasy II the games have each shared a number of motifs that fans have come to look for. For instance, there has always been a character named Cid, who is usually connected to flight, whether as a pilot or engineer (though he has also been known as a political figure from time to time). Chocobos appear frequently in most Final Fantasy stories, and are usually used as mounts for the player. The teddy bear-like Moogle is also very common to Final Fantasy games. Cactuars often appear as enemies in Final Fantasy games, but have been known to show up in doll-like form.Final Fantasy IV The Complete Collection
Final Fantasy IV was the second game to be released outside of Japan and introduced many key elements that would stick with the future titles of the series: Save Points, Active Time Battle System, theatrical cutscenes, character leitmotifs, etc. This game was known as Final Fantasy II in North America and the forthcoming Final Fantasy VI was renamed to Final Fantasy III in North America. It wasn't until Final Fantasy VII that the series retro-actively changed it's chronological naming for the North American releases.
More recently, Square Enix has begun to extend the most popular Final Fantasy games beyond their initial release. Characters from numerous Final Fantasy games have made appearances in games like Kingdom Hearts, Ehrgeiz, and Dissidia. Several specific main series games have also received direct sequels or spin-offs which often occupy different genres. Final Fantasy X saw a sequel, the appropriately titled Final Fantasy X-2, which directly continued and concluded the original game's storyline.
The wildly popular Final Fantasy VII has seen numerous related releases, including the PSP action RPG Crisis Core, the PlayStation 2 third-person action game Dirge of Cerberus, a mobile game released only in Japan called Before Crisis, and in 2020, after much clamoring for it from fans, Final Fantasy VII Remake was released for PlayStation 4.
In a similar vein, Final Fantasy XIII had a trilogy of games released within the same world, include Final Fantasy XIII-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

I went to the funeral of a friend this morning.
I've had a headache that swung between mild to nine outta ten migraine for the last five days that finally gave up the ghost this afternoon.
I beat Tales of Arise last night, leaving me in the video game null zone. Want to talk about the game but I'm not sure how to. End up going on a tangent about video game criticism instead.
I'm afraid the weather is going to cause me to be stuck at work next week. I am Essential Personnel. Worst case scenario I have to stay there for a few days and rack up overtime, but when your family's at home having a snow day.... :(
Spent the afternoon digging up cords so I could replay Final Fantasy VII on the PS1 and CRT TV. Felt weird when I finally managed it. First time I've played it on a TV in a long time. First time I've played it since FFVIIR was out. Feels like something from the past moreso than it ever has for me. Like it's something from another time and not one that I lived through (even though I did). Book club book for this month also something from the past. A high school required reading book. Not sure I want something from my past right now.
It's cold. This time of year isn't Always bad, but it often is. Hard and cold, no new roots yet. No light, no succor. Maybe it would be better to celebrate Lunar New Year. Does the new day begin at midnight or at dawn?
Seeking alternate video game, downloaded SaGa/Final Fantasy Legend collection. Okay with visiting the past, just don't want to revisit MY past. The simplicity, the monochrome, the obtuse gameplay mechanics make it mysterious, haunting. Music surprisingly All Bangers. Uematsu did the music for this. I did not know. Allegedly they intentionally made the game 6-8 hours long because that's the length of a flight from Japan to Hawaii.
I'm cold. I'm tired. I've slept badly the last few days because I hurt and I haunt. Good night.

Did you play any of the three Final Fantasy Legend games on the original Game Boy? I ask because they are actually part of the SaGa series like SaGa Frontier, they were renamed by Squaresoft for brand recognition purposes when they were released in the US.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The re-release for Switch, smartphone, and PC was given the somewhat clunky name Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend
Tumblr media
Only hand held gaming system I ever had was a Sega Game gear so no I never played those only had a few games for that too since it chewed up batteries so I couldn't really play it on the regular given my AC adapters kept getting eaten by various pets.
Looks like it could be a fun collection to play though.

Ok, so, since the Wii U and 3ds shops are gonna close down soon, I'm on a mission to collect all the fun Wii U and 3ds games I can find. Here's a list of what I think are some of the best download-only Wii U and 3ds games that I've found. I think most of these may also be on Switch, Steam, or other platforms. And a lot of these are available on both 3ds and Wii U.
3ds
All of the Sonic Game Gear/Master system games that are on 3ds: Sonic 1 and 2, Sonic Blast, Sonic Labyrinth, Triple Trouble, and Tails Adventure. If you don't have the original machines to play them on, then this is the best way to play these. Works so much better than online emulators.
Pretty much anything by Circle and Skipmore. So, the Witch and Hero trilogy, Fairune, Drancia Saga, Ambition of the Slimes. I know I'm forgetting some, but just filter by publisher and look up Circle and Skipmore. All their games are just sooooo fun. Most of them are pretty simple, you can get through them in a few hours, but you really should clear a few hours out of a single day when you sit down to play one because they are highly addictive. Especially Witch and Hero.
Quell: Memento. This is a fun puzzle game with a bittersweet story about a crotchety, old, reclusive man. Your goal is to get him to open up about his life.
Steamworld. Get the whole series, if you can. They are mostly platformer, metroidvania, and/or puzzle styled games where you play as steam-powered robots.
Legend of Dark Witch. Multiple ways to play, side-scrolling platformer game with some magical shooter elements.
Kingdom's Item Shop. This is so cute- you run a shop for magical and heroic items, and you have to go out and fight monsters to get more ingredients. You also get to craft new items.
Alchemic Dungeons. Nothing but dungeons, and you craft what you need as you go along.
Alphadia. High fantasy RPG, but with bioengineering sci-fi story elements.
Severed. Action game with dungeons where you sever monsters' limbs to get upgrades. Not as gross as it sounds.
Excave. It's a trilogy. Dungeon crawler. Cuz, come on, how can you not love dungeon crawlers?
Cursed ex Castilla. Basically a Ghosts 'n Goblins clone, but with its own story. And you can save your place, so that alone makes it worth it XD
Adventure Labyrinth Story. Another dungeon crawler.
Kemco RPG's. There's a bunch of them, and they all have good stories: ASH, Infinite Dunamis, Justice Chronicles... like I said, there's a bunch. Each one puts its own spin on the battle mechanincs.
Ninja Usagimaru. A series of puzzle games where you have to push, pull, and throw blocks to rescue villagers and defeat the monsters. Reminds me of an old block-pushing puzzle game I played years ago and can't remember the name of. Anyway, Usagimaru is fun.
Wii U
1001 Spikes. I'm pretty sure there's more spikes than that in this game X'D. NES-inspired pixel art action game. Get the treasure and escape, but don't stand in one place for too long.
Alphadia Genesis. Prequal to Alphadia (which I mentioned above for 3ds).
More Steamworld games.
Axiom Verge. It honestly looks like a Metroid clone, but Axiom Verge is its own story and has its own rules of gameplay and mechanics. And it ain't easy, by any means.
Bit Dungeon. Dungeon crawler. Yup, that's it, just dungeons. Go ahead, go nuts.
Dragon Fantasy. Highly comedic high fantasy RPG where you play as a bald, middle-aged former hero. There's a whole series. Looks like it was inspired by Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Earthbound.
Defend Your Crypt. This game is backwards! So, usually, you would play as someone trying to break into a crypt to steal treasures, right? Well, in this game, you play as the ghost of a pharaoh who has to activate the traps to avoid getting his treasures stolen. Pixel-art.
Freedom Planet. Now, I know this game's on Steam and Switch, but if you have a little room on your Wii U and not on your Switch, you might want to try it. It's adorable, the characters are funny, the story is good, and it is so heavily inspired by Sega Genesis games.
Human Resource Machine. Stupid little game about the fundamentals of programming. Fun for anyone trying to learn computer science.
Master Reboot and Soul Axiom. These two are a set. They're somewhat minimalized first-person exploration/puzzle games set in one of those storylines where people have uploaded their consciousness into the cloud.
Space Hunted. As far as I know, this is ONLY on Wii U (and it may be the only game in my list that is only on Wii U). If you like the old NES sci-fi games, you HAVE to get this one! If it didn't have a copyright date of 2017, I would have sworn this was an original NES game. Not only are the music and the art true to the era, but it has a very simplistic menu style and it is just as hard as any NES sci-fi shootout I've ever tried.
NES Remix. You have the option to play missions and whole levels from the biggest NES hits (Mario, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Zelda, and more), but the real fun is the Remix levels. Some of them involve characters from one game ending up in another (so you have things like Mario's Boos chasing Kirby), while others have mixed-up versions of the original levels, like reversed or silhouetted levels. (The Kirby egg-eating level drove me nuts because the camera pans in closer and closer with every egg.) I do believe that NES Remix 1, 2, and Ultimate are only on 3ds and Wii U.
Nihilumbra. A spot of darkness escapes from the void and discovers beauty, life, and color, but he eventually develops an existential crisis as he realizes the void will destroy everything in its past as it attempts to reclaim him.
Xeodrifter. Hard. NES-inspired pixel art. Another game that reminds me of Metroid, but the art style is not cloned.
Swords and Soldiers. Strategy battle game, so stupid and hilarious and adorable. Pretty sure there's a whole series, I've only got the first one.
Pixel Slime U. Obviously developed by a true sadist. Pixel art, but there's no way you could confuse this with a retro NES game. Every level has a gimmick- some spin, some are upside-down, some switch from upside-down to right-side-up, and those are the easy ones. Only play if you're a glutton for punishment and you don't get motion sickness. I think it's only on Wii U, so get it while you can.
Olympia Rising. Play as the soul of a warrior trying to escape the rising ocean of acid in Hades. A bit tough.
Twisted Fusion. You've been transported to a world in the sky where all the monsters are allergic to water, so you use water guns to destroy them. And your character's phone has all these apps they can use to upgrade. Gameplay isn't too dynamic, but the setting of the game makes it enjoyable.
Castle Storm. Tower defense. Funny cutscenes, good graphics. Medieval knights vs. barbaric Vikings. But are the Vikings really that barbaric? And is it possible there's a traitor among Sir Gareth's men? Play to find out!
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. The punk sister is stuck in the cutesy world and the cutesy sister is stuck in the punk world. Switch back and forth between them to escape back to reality.
Knytt Underground. Mountain-climbing game- you can climb walls like in Celeste, but there's no stamina limit (also no dash). Journey through the post-apocalyptic underground world as both a mute human and a bouncy ball to ring the 6 bells that will prevent the world from dying. I think Knytt might actually be a series, but this is the first one I've found.
And I'm actually still collecting and intend to get as many as I can right up until the shops close down. Will try to remember to update this list as I find more.

i haven't read the fanbooks, the short story collections, the manga (it has extras, i think?), nor the sequel (hannelore's house of lords, right?) yet. i'd like to think that's going to last me for a while, but the brainworms are too strong and i just KNOW i'm going to finish them all in under two weeks, tops. do you have any aob fic recs? or any other book/light novel/web novel/manga recommendations? PLEAS EI'M NOT READY TO LET GO OF AOB FJEAKFN
I've only read the ones that have been translated and for the most part they are just different POV on what we already know happened in the series, I like them, but not much more story wise. . . I think Hannelore's is set after the series though, I looked at a few on the site and they seem to be after Rozemyne has 'graduated' from school, but I didn't want to read them yet so not completely sure they all are... maybe you can clarify after you read them.
I did try to look into AOB fanfiction, but A LOT of them are spoilerly so often I couldn't follow (as I haven't read all the way to the end) or didn't want to be too spoiled. I'm looking though my AO3 history and I only looked at a few before I  decided to just wait, so maybe you or other can add their favorites.
There was one I remember reading and liking was Schlaftraum's Blessing
I admit this is what lead me to finally seeking out the Japanese website and spot reading a few of the chapters. Most fanfiction likes to focus on romance or a romantic moment over telling a story, but this one integrated nicely with the series and had a nice thru arc between all the parts and was written well. I see that the author TheChatteringMagpi has since started a few more AOB stories and they all look interesting, one is AU and the other about Adolphine, so maybe even I can read them without needing to have read everything yet. So if I had to recommend one this is the best I got as I haven't really done a deep dive on AOB fanfiction / Japanese doujinshi.
Would love anyone else with recommendations to add their favorites stories
As for other series... I guess I could write more about this later with a better break down... I actually used to read a lot more when I was younger, but took a break from it, but during Covid I jumped into manga/anime again so I've been playing catchup ever since, it feels like there are more titles than ever now.
Of the ones I've read recently that I'm enjoying:
Historical setting: The Apothecary Diaries, Tearmoon Empire, I Swear I Won’t Bother You Again!, A Bride's Story
Fantasy/Magical World: Witch Hat Atelier, Shadow House, Made in Abyss, Beyond the Clouds, The Country Without Humans, The Girl from the Other Side
Featuring bookworms: The Savior's Book Café Story in Another World, Bibliophile Princess, The Tales of Marielle Clarac (the last 2 are more comical romances)
Isekai gremlins: My Next Life as a Villainess, Uncle from Another World
Isekai/Slice-of-life/Wholesome: By the Grace of the Gods, The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent, Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (I know this has action/fighting, but it often is comes off so wholesome to me overall) Drama/Romance (working hard for their dreams): Chihayafuru and Nadame Cantabile (both have a sorta similar couple dynamic to Roze/Ferd), Welcome to the Ballroom
Comedy/Romance: Skip Beat!, Kodocha, The Wallflower, Wotakoi - Love Is Hard for Otaku
People tell me are good but haven't read them yet - historical fantasy drama romances for the most part (I think): Snow White with the Red Hair, Yona of the Dawn, Dawn of Arcana, Vinland Saga, Seirei Gensouki Spirit Chronicles, Mushoku Tensei - Jobless Reincarnation, Heroic Legend of Arslan
Feel free to recommend your favorites!

I'm honestly really looking forward to the Final Fantasy/Magic: the Gathering crossover set next year, to the point that I keep try to speculate on what they'll do for certain things.
Like, how will they handle the spells? Fire/Fira/Firaga is an established progression, but will it just be "pump in more mana for bigger effect" or will it be based on some kind of counters or creatures? Could it be made in a way that lets the same expansion effect work on Enchantments, for spells like Shell/Shellra/Shellga?
I think they'll do the whole Saga thing they did for Doctor Who, only this time it will be one per game and the final chapter will transform the Saga into that game's final boss, much like how the Neon Dynasty Sagas became Enchantment Creatures.
Will they just do the main protagonists, or will some of the other party members from each game appear? Will it be one collective Cid card, or will only certain Cids get one? Which vehicles will appear? Which weapons?
And then there's Final Fantasy's job-classes. Because it could be done to have Class Enchantments make a return from the D&D set. But there's a problem there: FF and D&D share some classes, like Monk and Bard. And while Monk is mostly the same between the two franchises, the Bards work very differently.
D&D Bards are about storytelling, grand performances, and persuasion, so the Bard Class card dealing in Legendary cards works! But FF Bards are about using music to cause effects, helpful and debilitating, and only interact with legends insofar as they're protagonists (except for FFXIV's wandering minstrel, but he's also Yoshi-P's author avatar).
I wish I didn't have to wait so long for information on it.
