I know you’ve heard about Harrison Butker by now, and his embarrassment of a commencement speech at Benedictine College. You’ve probably seen the NFL kicker roasted six ways from Sunday for his misogyny, hypocrisy, and regressive nonsense. People have already written about his stupidity, everyone has memed his nonsense, and conservatives have applauded him for advocating for a return to the 1950s. That is exactly what he was doing, unashamedly. Butker delivered countless awful lines, saying, “Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values in media, all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.” Which is an ugly mix of law and order rhetoric and sexism, a mix that makes no logical sense but scratches a certain itch in the mind of his conservative audience.
I just want to briefly add to the criticism of this Super Bowl winner, who will probably run for office before too long. Specifically, I want to highlight the inane variety of patriarchal bullshit running through his speech, and his apparent approach to the world. Butker and men like him are trying to sell us a load of hot garbage, and get men to be the worst version of themselves. They’re trying to make us see ourselves as victims, and encouraging us to use that false belief as fuel to go out and hurt other people. We can and should reject that directive.
We should reject it for countless reasons, but I think the place to start is to look at this guy telling us we’ve been oppressed by society and so we should stand up and be real men and tell women to be homemakers. He makes four million dollars a year to kick a ball, he’s won the Super Bowl, and he’s still a miserable person pretending to be a victim. All that wealth, all the success, and he’s going to speak at a college to tell young women, “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
As they’re graduating college to go out into the world, he’s telling them to stay home and be mothers. He’s theoretically reached the American dream, and he’s spending his time telling college girls to be “homemakers.”
Oh and in the days since his speech it’s come out that his mom is an accomplished physicist. But nevertheless.

Please Please Me - The Beatles (1963)
Hi I'm in a class about the Beatles and had to write this assignment on Please Please Me, where we ranked each song, listed an element we liked and one we disliked, then speculated on what we thought that the song was about. I've been a bit too busy to put a bunch of effort into this blog but I thought you all would be interested in this so I reworked the assignment a bit to fit my blog better.
I love the raspy vocals on Twist and Shout. Maybe it's because it's the version I grew up listening to, but I love this rendition of the song more than any other. It's just so damn catchy.
Love Me Do, I love the harmonica on this track and it's another catchy track even if it is a bit basic for a Beatles song.
I really enjoy the guitar riff on I Saw Her Standing There, but I did think that it was a bit of a simple song. I do love the themes of youthful love, even if I don't actually know what Paul meant by "she was just seventeen."
I love the little "bop-shoowap" vocal riff in the background of Boys, but this style of music just doesn't fit the Beatles too well. It's another song that I find very basic and wish that they had experimented a little more.
I love the story and themes of Anna (Go to Him), but don't love how the song was executed. The feeling of knowing that someone that you love doesn't feel the same way about you is heartbreaking and hard to accept and I think that the lyrics are great, but the instrumental and singing just don't work for a band like the Beatles. This wasn't part of the assignment but I did want to add an overall review for my blog because that's what I usually do here. I thought that this album was great for a debut, but knowing what would come from the Beatles in future albums does hurt this album retrospectively. I do wish that this album had more original songs, but I also understand that it was standard practice for bands of this time to mostly release covers. I'm not going to recommend casual fans of the Beatles to give the full album a listen, but if you somehow haven't heard Love Me Do or Twist and Shout, I will recommend those tracks.

Cyd Zeigler at Outsports:
Harrison Butker, an NFL player who recently won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, used a graduation speech this weekend to attack the LGBTQ community and tell women to forget about a career and serve their man instead. Butker was the commencement speaker at Benedictine College, a Catholic school in Kansas. This is the same Benedictine College that several years ago forced Jallen Messersmith, an out gay basketball player at the school, to remove a Pride flag.
After attacking “dangerous gender ideologies” in his speech — a clear slam at the transgender community — Butker highlighted a recent Associated Press article that discussed how Benedictine College and the Catholic Church are seeing “an immense shift toward the old ways.” He said that while the AP intended it to create anger, instead people in the Church took “pride” in the article. “Not the deadly sins sort of Pride that has an entire month dedicated to it,” he said in a clear slam at Pride Month this June, “but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the holy ghost to glorify him.” He also took a large chunk of his speech to speak directly to the women in the audience. He said that while many of them likely are excited to start a career and get promotions, they should instead consider the only vocation that will make them most happy: homemaker.
Kansas City Chiefs K Harrison Butker gave a commencement address at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas last weekend.
During his commencement speech, Butker launched sexist, homophobic, and transphobic attacks against women in the workforce, LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and LGBTQ+ people in general.

Li Zhou at Vox:
NFL kicker Harrison Butker is facing widespread backlash after giving a college commencement speech that casually dabbled in misogyny and homophobia. Butker, who has won three Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs in recent years, delivered the address at Benedictine College, a private Catholic institution in Kansas, on May 11. In it, he criticizes everything from women prioritizing professional careers to Pride Month to abortion access.
An outspoken conservative who is close with leading right-wing figures including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Butker’s speech closely echoed Republican rhetoric and fixated on issues that have been popular fodder for conservatives as they try to mobilize their voters ahead of the 2024 election. “I think it is you, the women who have had the most diabolical lies told to you,” Butker said in his speech. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
The Chiefs have not commented on Butker’s remarks and the NFL league office distanced itself from them. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger,” Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People. Butker’s speech advances the same agenda that the GOP has been pushing not only in its rhetoric but through policy. At least 21 Republican-led state legislatures have approved laws that ban or restrict abortion access and at least 20 have approved bills that curb access to gender-affirming care for minors. Butker’s remarks — which emphasized people “staying in [their] lane” — are the latest attempt to weaponize religion to achieve the same goals.
The backlash to Butker’s speech, explained
Butker joined the NFL in 2017, and is considered by some analysts to be one of the best kickers in the league. In recent years, he’s also been vocal about his support for conservative causes. On his Instagram page, Butker is pictured alongside Sen. Hawley, a darling of the religious right. He was previously photographed with Mark and Patricia McCloskey, a white couple that pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020. And during the Chiefs’ visit to the White House in 2023, he wore a tie expressing his opposition to abortion rights.
The Chiefs have been in the cultural spotlight not only for their on-field success but also thanks to tight end Travis Kelce’s relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Butker referenced a Swift song lyric in his 20-minute speech and described Swift, a music mogul who is one of the most famous people on the planet as “my teammate’s girlfriend.” (For the curious, Butker cited the Swift lyric, “familiarity breeds contempt” in order to criticize priests who rely too much on parishioners for adulation and support.)
Kansas City Chiefs K Harrison Butker made a commencement speech at Benedictine College last weekend that drew lots of controversy, including his sexist and antifeminist view on women in careers, his anti-LGBTQ+/anti-trans statements, and his anti-abortion extremism he espoused in his speech.
He delivered small kick energy and heapings of hate.

I have an art professor who is the spitting image of George Harrison. He wears his hair and facial hair just like long haired-George. And this guy is in his 70s and looks just like George in “Now and Then” during the recording.
Every single time without fail that I wear my “All Things Must Pass” tee shirt, he says in his southern drawl, “I like your tee shirt.”
This man is the biggest George Harrison fan I know, to the point of styling himself to look like him (which I also do lol I have a Harrison haircut).
Also his art is phenomenal

Olivia Pope Appreciation Post!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Olivia Carolyn Pope!
She not only worked at the White House, and created her own form, but she put presidents in office. She doesn’t just fix problems, she fixes people.
She seems to have been mentored by both Cyrus and Verna which after her vast education, molded her into who she is today.
Throughout the seasons we see Olivia go through hell in back not only for her clients, those she loves, but also for herself. She will do whatever is necessary and her gut is never wrong so with those two pieces together she dominates Washington D.C.
Through the seasons we do see Olivia I’m relationships, even though she says in season one she can never have normal.. the other major factor being “All Roads Lead Back To Fitz”
Edison Davis: off screen the two have a past relationship where they lived together in Georgetown and Edison even proposed. However it ended, and years later they begin to reconnect- but Olivia can’t open up to him, especially not about the past relationship she had that’s haunting her (Aka Fitz). Even with Olivia being an emotional stonewall Edison proposes again, and Olivia says No. this second proposal shows Olivia that she wants a difficult, painful love rather than an easy and normal one.
Fitz Grant: Fitz needed help with his election campaign while on the trail and Cyrus having met Olivia at law school, knew just the person to bring in. They very quickly and easily developed feelings for each other, and as much as they wanted to be together Olivia knew that an affair would be political suicide for Fitz. He was persistent though, and after being elected he told her that he loved her. Even after Olivia left the White House due to Mellie knowing about her and Fitz, there love ans tension never stopped. They didn’t become official and public until much later after Fitz divorced Mellie. However things weren’t perfect, when Fitz proposed she at first said no - then yes. Then later she gave back the ring. Fitz did however forgive Olivia and move her into the White House, however once again not so long after this - Olivia feels trapped and like she doesn’t want the life she’s living. So she leaves Fitz and the White House. From there the relationship went back to being an off again on again thing for awhile. When Fitz moves back to D.C. to help Olivia after his presidency is over, and she has left the White House which is now in the hands of Millie. It’s left open as to if they get back together officially or what happens. But in my mind they do in fact get back together and though there life would never be “normal”, Olivia learns that the difficult and painful romance she thought she deserved was also a soft and sweet - safe place.
Jake Ballard: The two met a few months after the death of Verna and the sparks ignited fast. From there it was an on and off again thing. The relationship is complicated in many ways in true Olivia fashion but a major one being that Olivia is often seen going back and forth between Jake and Fitz. Jake is shown to know Olivia more than she knows herself, to know her darkness and not shy away. She is very open and vulnerable with him. Once Fitz has been re-elected Jake and Olivia go to an island for two months and come back boyfriend and girlfriend and stay that way until something catastrophic happens in Olivia’s life. When it’s over she doesn’t want to see him or Fitz as she tries to think of them as her past while she tried to move forward. Awhile later Jake tells her about how he’s in love with her but that if she loves Fitz, she should be with him. She does just that but after her breakup, her and Jake rekindle, though everything seems to be just physical until Jake gets engaged. However the engagement is just a cover and he tells Olivia as much. Jake asks if Olivia wants to be with him, and she nods and kisses him. However Olivia receives a threat that Jake must marry Vanessa or he would be killed.
Throughout the show there were a few other small romances but overall those above were the big three.
Trivia
- She paces circles when she is troubled by something that she considers a real problem, they become perfect circles if she is really worried
- In highschool she was on the swim team
- She has one rule for all clients: “Do not lie. They lie, all bets are off.”
- She knows 18 languages, including Spanish, Farsi, Russian, Swahili, Cantonese, and Urdu
- The character of Olivia Pope is inspired by the real life crisis management consultant: Judy Smith
- The final scene in the Final shows a portrait of Olivia Pope in the second floor of the National Portrait Gallery which is only reserved for portraits of presidents of the United States of America. This leads us to believe that sometime after Mellie, Olivia became president.

One of my college professors: "Don't ever use Wikipedia for school assignments and professional works." My class: "We know." Professor: "I shall prove it. Many years ago a friend and I put a lie about Harrison Ford on Wikipedia and it's still there. People think it's true, to the point that it's been put into official print biographies about him." Me: "If it's become that widespread, shouldn't you, like fess up and remove it?" Other Classmate: "Yeah you're continuing the spread of misinformation. Isn't that kind of unethical?" Me: "Especially since you're teaching a class on preventing misinformation and identifying fraud." Professor: "No, I'm not taking it down, it's funny. And it's Wikipedia, so nobody cares. None of my other classes complained about this in the past."
Of course, now that she finally had a class that's internet-savvy, the factoid is no longer there, presumably removed by one of my classmates. But now you know. There's a "well-known" fact about Harrison Ford that's a complete fabrication. Good luck figuring out what it is!
