as someone who was not born and raised in the rhineland, carnival has not yet opened up to me. but it is very fascinating to experience it on the sidelines and also how it shapes so many things and is present everywhere.

Industry investment architecture + late war allied carpet bombing leveling out anything architectural beautiful with culture identity. Carnival, with the 1000 year tradition, a way to comprehend that reality. a stepping stone, which inspired me being creative, being a painter. My first carnival expierences are where my studio is. Leeuwarden

Our first short trip in 2018 was to Leeuwarden in Friesland in the Netherlands and then from there on to East-Friesland in Germany. We left on Shrove Tuesday after the carneval celebrations in Cologne. We were lucky that there was sunny and dry weather for our drive north which was pleasant und uneventful. We made a short break in Appeldoorn to do some shopping and then carried on to Leeuwarden which we reached late afternoon.

The site we had chosen is part of a small marina situated in a quiet residential area on the outskirts of Leeuwarden. It was basically self-service with clear instructions on what to do to register and make payment. While we were setting up the very friendly warden turned up who gave us a friendly welcome and some useful tips. After walking our old dog Jamie, we made ourselves a bite to eat and settled in for a quiet night. Both the television reception and the free wlan worked well.

The next morning we woke to a very cold but bright and sunny day. After breakfast and sorting Jamie out we walked along to the bus stop and took the bus into the town centre. Leeuwarden is one of the european cultural capitals in 2018 alongside Valletta. The city is all spruced up for a full calendar of events the bulk of which take place in the summer months. In February there was little going on during the week with any events mostly at the weekend. The information centre did however recommend the Mata Hari exhibition in the modern Friesland Museum. Leeuwarden is the birthplace of Mata Hari and she is probably the town‘s most famous citizen.

We spent a couple of hours just wandering around the town which has an interesting mix of old and modern architecture. As it was pretty cold we took a break to warm up in the Grand Café Post Plaza which we can highly recommend. The building used to be the main post office and now it is a delightful café and restaurant.

Following that we made our way to the museum to visit the Mata Hari exhibition. Unfortuneately on arrival we were told that there hade been a power cut which automatically closed all the fire doors so there was no way to enter and they had no idea how long it would take to solve the problem. We then decided to make our way back to the van and conclude the day there. Nevertheless we had an interesting day in Leeuwarden and we may return there later in the year.

Overnight there was a snowfall and we awoke to grey skies. Over breakfast we decided to move on, next destination Emden.
