As Long as I'm Thinking about Job Interview Stuff
Here's my general pattern for answering the "Tell us about time you failed / dealt with a bad co-worker / had to struggle to complete something /etc."
These questions are asked to suss out if you're an asshole. The reason there's more than one of them is to see if you have a shit talking problem that can take a little time to show itself. Basically, interviewers are trying to get a sense of if you're gonna be a fucking problem once you're comfortable at a new workplace.
I literally once watched myself lose a job because the managers asked, "How do you deal with people who might be temperamental at times?" It was a software company, so I figured they meant "At least one of our engineers is a huge asshole, but we think he's worth keeping around even if he yells at people." And so I said, "Look, we all have our moments, and I do my best to be understanding if someone's having a tough time. I think it's important to remember we're all working together and trying to make something succeed. That being said, if the problem is I'm getting yelled at because someone else is being unprofessional, I'm not going to stand there and allow that abuse. I will be talking to HR, at a minimum, and if that doesn't resolve it, I will take care of it myself."
And, let me be clear, the moment any positive vibes left the room was when I said, "I'm not gonna stand there and allow that abuse." Which told me EXACTLY how they were handling the situation currently.
Anyway, sorry for the recipe blog wander. Back to the point. Here's how I handle the questions where they want you to discuss something negative.
I take a moment to think. Yes, I know the question is coming and already have a few options picked for an answer, but taking a moment to think before answering means I'm not gonna stumble over my words when I start.
Start with the negative. If the question is, "Tell us about dealing with a difficult co-worker," Start at the problem. "Well, I remember once I worked with someone who really didn't like answering questions via email."
Explain why it made the job difficult. "Given that what I do is focused on getting things written down, I prefer sending questions via email whenever possible so I always have a clear starting point on the information I use, even if the information changes a lot through conversation."
Restate the problem as the beginning of the solution. "But, this person didn't like to answer questions in writing, so I started going over to his desk and asking him the questions."
Say something nice about the problem. "He was great face-to-face. Always happy to help."
Explain the solution. "And it turned out he was happy to read anything I would print out and hand him. So, I'd go ask him the questions, go back to my desk and do a first draft based on what he'd said, and then give him a physical copy to mark up."
Stamp a positive final remark on it. "Once I realized how to best communicate with him, he was very open to helping. If I walked over with a first draft, he'd just look at it right then so I could make updates as quickly as possible. And he started letting me know if there were any major design changes on the way and explaining it to me earlier in the process, which made it easier to make updates."
That's my technique. The biggest thing of it, I think, is to make sure your answer is sincere. Don't use a situation where you still want to shove someone into traffic. Pick a situation where you feel like it actually turned out well in the end.

Please tell us how to get into IT without a degree! I have an interview for a small tech company this week and I’m going in as admin but as things expand I can bootstrap into a better role and I’d really appreciate knowing what skills are likely to be crucial for making that pivot.
Absolutely!! You'd be in a great position to switch to IT, since as an admin, you'd already have some familiarity with the systems and with the workplace in general. Moving between roles is easier in a smaller workplace, too.
So, this is a semi-brief guide to getting an entry-level position, for someone with zero IT experience. That position is almost always going to be help desk. You've probably heard a lot of shit about help desk, but I've always enjoyed it.
So, here we go! How to get into IT for beginners!
The most important thing on your resume will be
✨~🌟Certifications!!🌟~✨
Studying for certs can teach you a lot, especially if you're entirely new to the field. But they're also really important for getting interviews. Lots of jobs will require a cert or degree, and even if you have 5 years of experience doing exactly what the job description is, without one of those the ATS will shunt your resume into a black hole and neither HR or the IT manager will see it.
First, I recommend getting the CompTIA A+. This will teach you the basics of how the parts of a computer work together - hardware, software, how networking works, how operating systems work, troubleshooting skills, etc. If you don't have a specific area of IT you're interested in, this is REQUIRED. Even if you do, I suggest you get this cert just to get your foot in the door.
I recommend the CompTIA certs in general. They'll give you a good baseline and look good on your resume. I only got the A+ and the Network+, so can't speak for the other exams, but they weren't too tough.
If you're more into development or cybersecurity, check out these roadmaps. You'll still benefit from working help desk while pursuing one of those career paths.
The next most important thing is

I was hired for my first ever IT role on the strength of my interview. I definitely wasn't the only candidate with an A+, but I was the only one who knew how to handle customers (aka end-users). Which is, basically, be polite, make the end-user feel listened to, and don't make them feel stupid. It is ASTOUNDING how many IT people can't do that. I've worked with so many IT people who couldn't hide their scorn or impatience when dealing with non-tech-savvy coworkers.
Please note that you don't need to be a social butterfly or even that socially adept. I'm autistic and learned all my social skills by rote (I literally have flowcharts for social interactions), and I was still exceptional by IT standards.
Third thing, which is more for you than for your resume (although it helps):
🎇Do your own projects🎇
This is both the most and least important thing you can do for your IT career. Least important because this will have the smallest impact on your resume. Most important because this will help you learn (and figure out if IT is actually what you want to do).
The certs and interview might get you a job, but when it comes to doing your job well, hands-on experience is absolutely essential. Here are a few ideas for the complete beginner. Resources linked at the bottom.
Start using the command line. This is called Terminal on Mac and Linux. Use it for things as simple as navigating through file directories, opening apps, testing your connection, that kind of thing. The goal is to get used to using the command line, because you will use it professionally.
Build your own PC. This may sound really intimidating, but I swear it's easy! This is going to be cheaper than buying a prebuilt tower or gaming PC, and you'll learn a ton in the bargain.
Repair old PCs. If you don't want to or can't afford to build your own PC, look for cheap computers on Craiglist, secondhand stores, or elsewhere. I know a lot of universities will sell old technology for cheap. Try to buy a few and make a functioning computer out of parts, or just get one so you can feel comfortable working in the guts of a PC.
Learn Powershell or shell scripting. If you're comfortable with the command line already or just want to jump in the deep end, use scripts to automate tasks on your PC. I found this harder to do for myself than for work, because I mostly use my computer for web browsing. However, there are tons of projects out there for you to try!
Play around with a Raspberry Pi. These are mini-computers ranging from $15-$150+ and are great to experiment with. I've made a media server and a Pi hole (network-wide ad blocking) which were both fun and not too tough. If you're into torrenting, try making a seedbox!
Install Linux on your primary computer. I know, I know - I'm one of those people. But seriously, nothing will teach you more quickly than having to compile drivers through the command line so your Bluetooth headphones will work. Warning: this gets really annoying if you just want your computer to work. Dual-booting is advised.
If this sounds intimidating, that's totally normal. It is intimidating! You're going to have to do a ton of troubleshooting and things will almost never work properly on your first few projects. That is part of the fun!

Tips
DO NOT work at an MSP. That stands for Managed Service Provider, and it's basically an IT department which companies contract to provide tech services. I recommend staying away from them. It's way better to work in an IT department where the end users are your coworkers, not your customers.
DO NOT trust remote entry-level IT jobs. At entry level, part of your job is schlepping around hardware and fixing PCs. A fully-remote position will almost definitely be a call center.
DO write a cover letter. YMMV on this, but every employer I've had has mentioned my cover letter as a reason to hire me.
DO ask your employer to pay for your certs. This applies only to people who either plan to move into IT in the same company, or are already in IT but want more certs.
DO NOT work anywhere without at least one woman in the department. My litmus test is two women, actually, but YMMV. If there is no woman in the department in 2024, and the department is more than 5 people, there is a reason why no women work there.
DO have patience with yourself and keep an open mind! Maybe this is just me, but if I can't do something right the first time, or if I don't love it right away, I get very discouraged. Remember that making mistakes is part of the process, and that IT is a huge field which ranges from UX design to hardware repair. There are tons of directions to go once you've got a little experience!

End of September: I quit my first proper tech job after 2 years.

End of September
I quit my job because it was getting tiring and I couldn't see any chance of me developing there. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to do my apprenticeship with them and then go on to become their Jr Web Developer - but from there, everything felt static. When the projects being given were getting absolutely boring, I knew then I needed some kind of change. So, I just quit. I said on a Monday I was quitting and that same Friday, I left. Politely and respectfully, of course.

I was so random how I did this but my Dad suggested for me to apply to university. I told him I didn't even have the right qualifications they wanted. He said "Bet". We looked at the local universities and none mentioned any apprenticeship certifications but mentioned work experience in the field. I applied with that knowledge. Wrote the cringiest personal statement about why the universities should accept me - and it worked. I got into the university of my city which seemed super prestigious to me, 18-year-old me would be screaming that I got a place at the university that I deemed for super smart people.

Basically, I was supposed to relax until around February time, then start looking for a new job - tech or non-tech.
!! At this point, I was not looking for a new job !!
Last Tuesday I got a message from a recruiter on LinkedIn saying my profile was cool and would love to help me get an interview for a Frontend Software Engineer position in the city. I had a hunch to tell him I was okay and wasn't looking for a new job right now, but I was getting bored recently and this to me was an exciting new thing to do, so I said yeah why not!
The meeting was on the following Thursday and I met the IT manager. He liked me (same back to him) and wanted me to meet the team next Monday (yesterday). Afterward, I was feeling "Oh wait this is getting serious, I'm only here on a whim, like I'm actually doing good?" so I thought "Okay let's make an effort on the next 'interview'!!".
Monday came and I met the funniest set of people ever in a tech team. Then I thought "Lowkey highkey... would be so cool to work here~!" and the feedback I got was really positive. I got the job. Today I talked to their HR to finalise things.

Similarities of awful bosses to real-life bosses are coincidences only. Mostly.
Merrill was so close to a breakthrough, she was sure of it. The mirror she'd picked up at an antique shop was certainly magical, certainly elven, despite the shop owner's claim that it only mimicked the form. And all she wanted to do was head back to her apartment and try, once again, to learn its secrets. To spark its magic. To spark the magic she knew lay within her, dormant, waiting for just the right words to return to the world.
Instead, she was stuck at the publishing office all day for work.
Anders had spilled his coffee that morning, all over the floor by her desk. The carpeted floor, which smelled now like a latte. Merrill didn't even like coffee.
Then she'd been in a meeting with Hawke, Isabela, and Meredith around when she usually took her lunch break. As usual, Meredith was a complete pain to deal with, never budging, dismissing Isabela's sales experience, and sliding a handful of elven microaggressions in, to boot. Nothing actionable, according to Bran in HR. Of course.
Hungry, she took her lunch break late. It helped, but on her return, she was called into Varric's office.
"Daisy," he said, looking tired. He slid a brochure proof across his desk. "I need you to focus."
"I am focused," she protested.
He raised an eyebrow and turned the page. Merrill winced. The proof had come back printed entirely wrong on the inside. The right side of each paragraph was cut off at the edges, and on the other, the bleed hadn't been adjusted right, leaving a long stripe of white at the end.
"I can't have this happen again," Varric said. "My brother is already looking to shrink our team, and I don't want to lose a single one of you. But we have five hundred of these catastrophes sitting in boxes, now."
Merrill made her apologies, made her promises, ate her crow. Her head hung low as she left his office, returning hastily to her desk. She knew Varric would cover for her, a little, probably blaming the new, required printing software update that was giving them all fits, but still.
The sight of 3 new email notifications on her open laptop made her want to scream.
There was a knock on her cubicle wall. Looking up, she saw Hawke.
"Hey," said Hawke. "Let's go get some caffeine."
"Right now? I should probably…"
Hawke shut her laptop with one hand, shaking her head. "Nuh-uh. Time for hot drinks. My treat."
So Merrill went with her to the coffee shop a few blocks down. As they entered the coffee shop, Hawke took her hand. With only momentary hesitation, Merrill let her.
It was a little loud inside Hanged Man Coffee, but still cozy as usual. They chatted aimlessly while waiting in line, Hawke being an excellent conversationalist when she was in the mood.
"So… How's the shitty day?" Hawke asked.
"Awful," Merrill admitted, cupping her hands around her herbal tea for warmth. "I just want to be at home."
"Something important going on?"
"Nothing really," Merrill demurred, glancing away. "Tired of work, that's all."
"Ah, of course," said Hawke, with a strange note of humor in her voice. Was she being teased? Merrill looked back at Hawke, and found Hawke nudging a corner of some torn lined paper at her.
Merrill flinched. The note was hers. Specifically, it included some doodles on theoretical ancient elven language that were, if not explicitly illegal, very much the next step to rediscovering magic, which was.
She scrambled to take it from Hawke, shoving it into her purse, cursing her carelessness. Pleadingly, she looked at Hawke, but she found her still amused. Unconcerned.
"It's not what you think?" Merrill squeaked.
"I think you have interesting hobbies. Definitely more interesting than slogging away at Kirkwall Publishing. You like to act all shy, but you have some sneaky ambitions, huh? And a wicked sense of humor. I don't think Meredith even noticed a couple of digs you made at her today." Hawke leaned in a little, close enough that Merrill could see the fine glitter in her bold, blood-red eyeshadow. "Can I take you on a date sometime?"
"What?" Merrill said, fully off-balance.
"I've been wanting to ask you for ages, but I didn't want to stir up office drama…" Hawke grinned. "Then I thought, if that happens, we could use a little fun drama, instead of the boring drama of all our upper management being assholes all the time."
Merrill tucked her hair behind her ear, still catching up with the speed at which Hawke spoke. "You're asking me out?"
"Yeah. Please don't leave me hanging?" Hawke frowned. "Unless a cutie like you already has someone-"
"No, no!" said Merrill, shaking her head. She retained enough sense not to blurt that she had only dated a little in the small elven community that had raised her, and it hadn't gone well.
"Great!" Hawke relaxed. It was a subtle thing, more posture than anything else. Merrill wondered, not for the first time, how much of Hawke's absurd confidence was a show. "I hope the timing's alright. I just saw what a miserable time you'd had, and thought a distraction might help."
Merrill slowly smiled. Hawke made her feel so... seen. In a way that she hadn't, really at all, since moving to a big city. Hawke had caught her humor and her passion, and instead of hating her for it, or wanting her gone, she'd asked her on a date. "That's oddly sweet, actually."
Hawke put a hand on her shoulder, more friendly than intimate - for now. "How about you come with me for dinner after work, then? Call it motivation to make it through the rest of the day. Maybe we can swap tales - I can share a little about Ferelden and my ridiculous family; you can tell me about your hobbies and maybe show me your work…"
"If you're not careful, you'll sound like you're blackmailing me into a date," Merrill teased. When Hawke looked stricken, she threw her hands up. "I'm sorry! I know you're not serious, it was a joke!"
Hawke snickered at her, then laughed, loud and joyous. Merrill sipped at her tea to keep from grinning too widely.

tw harassment, trauma processing
when I was in my mid twenties I worked for a software company, at first as a receptionist. Sometimes the IT department would go out and get dunkin in the middle of the day, and they started bringing me back a coffee. I thought they were being nice / sucking up so I wouldn’t forward them any calls. I thought the coffees were from the department as a whole.
This guy built up so slowly, over two years, to stopping by my desk and having friendly chats, to following me to my train, to one day (my birthday) trying to physically pull me into a bar to “just get one celebratory drink”.
At that point I reported him to HR, and he was given a slap on the wrist and told to never speak to me again.
Then he started sending me messages (on the work slack, which, what?) about how he was a painter and he wanted to paint me as Shakespeare characters, Juliet, Desdemona, Ophelia in the river. He’d pay me. It wouldn’t be weird.
I didn’t reply and reported him again. Nothing happened and I had to keep working with him and he continued to send me increasingly unhinged messages and I didn’t feel safe from him until I left that city.
And I felt guilty, like I was a bad person for accepting the $2 coffees and then not “giving him a chance”, like I owed him. I felt guilty for getting him in trouble, even though he didn’t actually suffer any repercussions. I felt helpless and defenseless at work, scared to leave my desk, but blaming myself, somehow.
I have DOZENS of these stories, several of them much worse, and I’m sure most people, especially anyone who has ever presented as a woman, have them too.
For so long, partially because of ~misogynistic society~, partially because I thought “well everyone goes through this” / “other people have it worse”, partially because I’ve always been afraid to center myself, and partially because I was intentionally manipulated and conditioned by one specific person to feel worthless from a young age, I thought I didn’t deserve to be upset or angry about any of these things that happened to me. I buried all of this shit so deep and then refused to engage with any media that was too serious or heavy, for years.
Finally I’ve been in a safe place long enough and stumbled into the right media to help me start unpacking it all, and it’s massive and overwhelming. I’m going to look for a therapist when I can. I’m sorry for the complete mess I’ve been this year. It’s a relief to acknowledge it all. It’s a relief to let myself be so, so angry. I hate that I’ll never get to rip into any of these people. I’m thankful for the video game. I know a lot of people had a similar experience with it. We see each other. I might get the tattoo, small, on my inside calf, I dunno I’m gonna sit on it for a year or so.
I deserve to set boundaries and have them be respected. I have value beyond what I can give to other people. I am so much more than what you made me.
