If you thought those old 5 1/4-inch floppy disks were cumbersome check out these 8-inch #floppies! When floppy disks were developed in the late 60s the 8-inch #diskette was the norm until #Shugart Associates (the company that made the #disks pictured here) developed the 5 1/4-inch floppy in 1976. Shugart Associates was later acquired by #Xerox and the company’s founder, Al Shugart, went on to found another data storage company called Shugart Technolgy. However in order to avoid a lawsuit with Xerox the company name was soon changed to @Seagate Technology, today one of the largest data storage companies in the world. When you hear the name #Mitsubishi naturally the first thing you think of is automobiles, but they have been manufacturing quality electronics since 1921. A nice example is this Mitsubishi DT-7 #Stereo #Cassette Deck, released in late 1979/early 1980 with a list price of $260 USD (approximately $850 today). This deck features a 2-head design, Dolby-B and C noise reduction, tape type selection with support for normal, chrome, and metal tapes, and to top it all off it has a nice-looking pair of analog VU meters. Remember when your electronics purchases came with #schematics? Here we have the #Pioneer SX-850 AM/FM #Stereo Receiver, made in Japan and manufactured from 1976 to 1978. As much as we like this very 70’s-looking piece of equipment we are even more interested in the documents that came with it - you don’t see a lot of 45-year-old user manuals in such good condition, and the schematics are a joy to look at (at least for our Techs). So kudos to the previous owner, they not only took great care of both the equipment and it’s documentation but also chose to recycle responsibly with us. Sometimes certain things that come into the shop raise questions, and this is one of them. This is obviously a #Panasonic CT-10R11S #CRT Color TV from circa 1994 with an 11” screen and antenna/coaxial input for up to 155 channels. However if you look at the sticker on the back of this #TV you will find a completely different model number and date of manufacture. Did someone just slap a made-up sticker on this or is this some sort of ultra-rare model that turns up nothing on the internet? All we know for sure is that this #television will not end up in the landfill, and that’s good enough for us! We were delighted to see a big box of classic PC games come in to the shop for #recycling, especially this collection of Age of Empires games - many, many, enjoyable hours were spent playing these games, with the occasional cheat code used now and then (anyone remember the E=mc2 trooper?). Another one from #Apple Computers, this time we have the 15” #PowerBook G4 1.67. Released in 2005 at a price of $1,999 USD the PowerBook G4 featured a 1.67 GHz #PowerPC 7447a processor, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM and a 80GB HDD. The PowerBook’s striking aluminum case not only looked good but helped keep the weight of the machine down to a very manageable (for the time) 5.6 pounds, a little over twice the weight of a MacBook Air. The G4 was the last of the line of PowerBooks, soon to be replaced in 2006 by the wildly successful #MacBook series of laptops. Another vintage camera find, this time of the Japanese variety. The #Pentax #Spotmatic (sold in the U.S. as the #Honeywell Spotmatic) 35mm SLR was produced from 1964 to 1976 by the #Asahi Optical Company. Originally retailing for approximately $300 USD (roughly $2,000 today with inflation), the Spotmatic was known for using high quality lenses and for being one of the first SLR’s to offer a through-the-lens (TTL) exposure metering system. Fun fact, this was the camera used by Ringo Starr in the film A Hard Day’s Night! These days most sticks of #RAM will have at a minimum 8GB capacity, these three sticks from the early 90s are 1MB each! In other words a regular 8GB stick of RAM has 8,000 times the capacity than the sticks you see here. Made by #Mitsubishi these are 30-Pin SIMMs (Single In-Line Memory Modules) which were the type of memory used in almost all 486 machines and even some earlier #Pentium class machines. Here’s a well-preserved #Toshiba Satellite 110CS laptop that was brought in this week for #recycling. First introduced in June 1996 the 110CS featured a 100MHz #Pentium processor, an 810MB HDD, and 8MB EDO RAM expandable to 40MB. As you can see it booted up on the first try (and quickly!), which is a testament to the quality of the machine and the care taken by its previous owner. We all know about the iMac but have you heard of the eMac? Introduced in 2002 the Apple #eMac (short for Education Mac) was, as the name suggests, meant to be sold only to educational institutions.
