We were delighted to see a big box of classic PC games come in to the shop for #recycling, especially this collection of Age of Empires games - many, many, enjoyable hours were spent playing these games, with the occasional cheat code used now and then (anyone remember the E=mc2 trooper?). #Maxtor may not be a household name, especially since it was bought out by #Seagate in 2006, but before that they were the third largest hard disk drive manufacturer in the world. This Model 71084R 3.5” #HDD from 1995 has a capacity of 1.1GB, which was decent at the time, but to put into perspective how much things have changed since then you can now buy a 1TB USB flash drive which can store roughly the same amount of data as 1,000 of these old hard drives! When it comes to the #Inkjet vs. laser printer debate we feel it isn’t really a debate at all and 99% of the time will recommend a laser #printer. They are generally faster and more reliable than Inkjets and though they may cost more up front the amount saved in toner makes most laser printers well, well, worth the price. Having said that, if twenty years ago you were to own this #HP #DeskJet 612C Inkjet printer you would likely be a pretty happy camper - in fact one of the guys in the shop owned this exact model and he says it was great…for the time. In 1999 when this printer was first introduced laser #printers were still prohibitively expensive to most except heavy users and businesses, so having a decent Inkjet like this was better than nothing - but boy did those ink cartridges add up! This may be one of the uglier pieces of tech we’ve decided to share, but if it’s a 1 out of 10 in the looks department it’s definitely a 10 out of 10 when it comes to nostalgia, at least for us 80s and 90s kids. We are pretty sure every Canadian home in the early 1990s had this model of phone, the Northern Telecom (#NorTel) LN-10 Harmony touch-tone phone, first manufactured in 1988. The best was when this phone was outfitted with an extra long cord - at the time it was for many of us the closest thing to having a mobile phone! Although telephone answering machines in some form or another have been around since the early 20th century, commercial units did not enter the market until the 60s. Introduced in 1963 the Model 100 Record-O-Phone was was one of the first commercially available answering machines, costing several hundred dollars each and aimed primarily at business customers. The unit used a reel of plastic tape to record incoming messages and messages could be retrieved and erased remotely with the handheld Tele-Key, which was pretty advanced technology for the time. The manual even gives instructions on how to leave a telephone message, it’s that old! Ahoy, mateys! Today we have another #radio but this one’s a bit different. This is a #Sealine Marine #VHF FM transceiver, distributed in Canada by NDI Inc. Marine radios differ from regular VHF radios by using a specific radio frequency range (between 156.0 and 162.025 MHz) and are specifically designed for communications on the waterways. Fixed-mount radios like this one deliver more power and have longer range because they are run off the boat’s electrical connections, giving a max transmission power of 25 watts - much better than the max 5 watts of a handheld VHF radio, but if the boat loses power that handheld may come in handy! Here are some results of another successful network #cabling job at one of our veterinary customer’s offices. We ran 24 #Cat6 patch cables through the office walls, connected all PCs to a label printer, connected new printers to the network and finally mounted telephones, monitors, and PCs to the walls. Our recycling drive is in full swing and all sorts of interesting items are coming in…keep up the good work people! This here is a #Sharp Model RD-505 Solid State Tape Recorder, first released in 1966 at a retail price of approximately $125 (a little over $1,000 today). The Model RD-505 is an all-transistor, 2-Track, 2-Speed tape recorder with variable tone control, automatic AC/DC switchover for indoor-outdoor operation, and is surprisingly light at just over 4Kg, making it a truly portable device. We are only one day into Computation’s Waste Reduction Week event and already we have had some cool items come though our doors, like this #Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CX. One of the later versions of the Compaq LTE line of notebook computers, this machine was released in 1994 and features a 75 MHz #IntelDX4 processor, 8MB RAM, 340/510MB HDD, and a 9.5” display. When the first LTE was introduced in 1989 most portable computers were still very bulky - by being one of the the first to be approximately the size of a paper notebook, the LTE was partly responsible for spurring the use of the term “notebook computer”. Customer found out they had a defective #UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) when a fire in the office next door caused a power spike. We replaced the defective unit with a pair of Tripp Lite SMART1500LCD Line-Interactive UPS and all is secure again and took the opportunity to clean up their rack as well. UPSs see their battery capacity deteriorate over time, it is something that should be monitored occasionally as they generally protect equipment that is more costly than the UPS itself. We have had a couple of film #projectors come in lately, now it’s time for a slide projector! This is the Hanimex La Ronde 500 TAF carousel slide projector, probably from the late 60s or early 70s. Founded in 1947 Hanimex was an Australian-based enterprise that initially was an importer of photographic products, but import restrictions led them to begin manufacturing locally and by the early 70s they were the second-largest manufacturer of slide projectors in the world. Another day, another Bell & Howell 8mm film #projector. Founded in 1907 in Chicago, Bell & Howell are known mostly for their 8mm cameras and projectors but in 1979 they decided to get into the PC game by marketing a specially designed Apple II Plus computer to the educational market. This modified Apple II featured a black case design which led to it being known among computer enthusiasts as the “Darth Vader” Apple II.
