Although telephone answering machines in some form or another have been around since the early 20th century, commercial units did not enter the market until the 60s. Introduced in 1963 the Model 100 Record-O-Phone was was one of the first commercially available answering machines, costing several hundred dollars each and aimed primarily at business customers. The unit used a reel of plastic tape to record incoming messages and messages could be retrieved and erased remotely with the handheld Tele-Key, which was pretty advanced technology for the time. The manual even gives instructions on how to leave a telephone message, it’s that old!
