hot take: if an office/remote job requires mostly email communication, the interview questions should be written. There should also be a sample email that you have to write a response to, and something that tests your ability to draft an initial email about something related to whatever the job is about.
if you really need telephone skills as well, then there should be a mock call that is similar to the calls you'd have to make on the job, e.g. you are given a document to read beforehand and have to answer some questions about the content of the document on the call. No more of this "tell me about a time when you...." bullshit, just assessing things that are Directly Related To The Job, Please For The Love of God
#job search#is truly hell right now#I'm writing this as both a job seeker and someone who was involved in hiring by the way#this type of interview would be 10 times more effective than a regular interview for every office or remote job I've had#I'm sure if you do coding or something there would be other steps but I still think it should be directly applicable to the daily work#who care about whether you can memorize leetcode just take a couple days to actually make changes to a repository and merge the pull request#also I realize that chatgpt could be an issue for written questions#but we have test taking software that locks down your computer and has the camera on so you can't use your phone#so why not repurpose that for job screening#.....anyway rant over lol I'm just very frustrated#nem speaks

Does anyone use medibang?
And if so what do you do when it's constantly unresponsive and refuses to open itself unless you restart your computer?
I've tried uninstalling it (which it refuses to do) and I'm honestly not sure what else to do-
#medibangpaint#can't tell if it's a computer issue or a software issue#I'm like this close to just switching to Kritia at this point

Was talking with my gf last night about PPG ship stuff and realized I've made my self insert a programmer and coder... in a series that takes place within the turn of the century... bro Y2K gonna fucking kill her 😭😭😭
#i had to explain this to my gf so i wouldnt be surprised if a lot of other ppl dont know this. so listen up#at the turn of the century people were justifiably freaking out because many MANY computer programs#were not designed to roll into the year 2000 and beyond. which would destroy decades of data and make so many programs obsolete suddenly#so it took many programmers working long hours to re-code all of this software and make sure it would still WORK#but here's the thing!! they were successful but when nothing DID end up happening everyone was like “oh haha we were worried for nothing!'#BUT THATS NOT TRUE. NOTHING ENDED UP HAPPENING BECAUSE IT TOOK THE HARD WORK OF THOUSANDS#AROUND THE CLOCK TO MAKE SURE THAT CATASTROPHE DIDNT OCCUR!!! WE OWE THEM EVERYTHING#grndjxhr sorry anyway. by making my s/i a coder i realize i have given them this exact issue to deal with 😂#ruby rambles#🍒🧬: emotional processing lag#💜: loving you's a felony

I don’t think gaming is the main thing people care about here my laptop is nearly unusable because it can’t load a browser or boot any program in less that three minutes like if I can get Minecraft started I can play just fine but I can’t log in to discord or watch a streamed show because my laptop can’t handle websites
ive used 10+ year old non-gaming laptops that can run websites just fine. If you can run minecraft, but not your browser, there's something else wrong with your computer you need to get checked out.
#it sounds like your harddrive might be dying tbh#or you have a virus#also your point doesnt make a lot of sense to me because i explicitly said that software bloat and OS optimization DOESNT affect games much#so the fact that you can run minecraft but youre having trouble with other stuff just sorta. concurs with my point.#i said that modern computers can run things without a problem#if your laptop IS modern and still having these issues#you DEFINITELY have a problem with it

MY DAD MIGHT BUY ME A PC????
#i have to use it to do graphic design stuff for his job so that he can write it off as a business expense but? holy shit?#i was sooo not expecting this but we were talking abt how seniors at my school get special privileges and that includes getting out of#school months early as long as they spend that time on a project which will hypothetically benefit their future careers#and what i had in mind for it which is like. professional internet merch artist stuff. but i mentioned the bit abt how i'd need to build a#pc first bc my computer is busted as hell and can't run any decent drawing software and like. dpi is an issue.#and without missing a beat he was like 'hey could you hypothetically like. design posters' and i was ofc like 'no i'm an illustrator not a#graphic designer' and he was like 'but could you learn' and uhm. holy shit?#the benefits of presenting things as 'this is how i'd use it in a practical capacity' and not 'here's all the video games that won't run on#my piece of shit macbook'. bc i've mentioned my intention of building a pc to him half a million times but i've always led w the video game#he also might pay for photoshop and like. thank god bc i am Not doing that. i'm going to try and get him to cover illustrator too bc i hate#adobe but. vector files :/.#romeo.txt

idk if people on tumblr know about this but a cybersecurity software called crowdstrike just did what is probably the single biggest fuck up in any sector in the past 10 years. it's monumentally bad. literally the most horror-inducing nightmare scenario for a tech company.
some info, crowdstrike is essentially an antivirus software for enterprises. which means normal laypeople cant really get it, they're for businesses and organisations and important stuff.
so, on a friday evening (it of course wasnt friday everywhere but it was friday evening in oceania which is where it first started causing damage due to europe and na being asleep), crowdstrike pushed out an update to their windows users that caused a bug.
before i get into what the bug is, know that friday evening is the worst possible time to do this because people are going home. the weekend is starting. offices dont have people in them. this is just one of many perfectly placed failures in the rube goldburg machine of crowdstrike. there's a reason friday is called 'dont push to live friday' or more to the point 'dont fuck it up friday'
so, at 3pm at friday, an update comes rolling into crowdstrike users which is automatically implemented. this update immediately causes the computer to blue screen of death. very very bad. but it's not simply a 'you need to restart' crash, because the computer then gets stuck into a boot loop.
this is the worst possible thing because, in a boot loop state, a computer is never really able to get to a point where it can do anything. like download a fix. so there is nothing crowdstrike can do to remedy this death update anymore. it is now left to the end users.
it was pretty quickly identified what the problem was. you had to boot it in safe mode, and a very small file needed to be deleted. or you could just rename crowdstrike to something else so windows never attempts to use it.
it's a fairly easy fix in the grand scheme of things, but the issue is that it is effecting enterprises. which can have a looooot of computers. in many different locations. so an IT person would need to manually fix hundreds of computers, sometimes in whole other cities and perhaps even other countries if theyre big enough.
another fuck up crowdstrike did was they did not stagger the update, so they could catch any mistakes before they wrecked havoc. (and also how how HOW do you not catch this before deploying it. this isn't a code oopsie this is a complete failure of quality ensurance that probably permeates the whole company to not realise their update was an instant kill). they rolled it out to everyone of their clients in the world at the same time.
and this seems pretty hilarious on the surface. i was havin a good chuckle as eftpos went down in the store i was working at, chaos was definitely ensuring lmao. im in aus, and banking was literally down nationwide.
but then you start hearing about the entire country's planes being grounded because the airport's computers are bricked. and hospitals having no computers anymore. emergency call centres crashing. and you realised that, wow. crowdstrike just killed people probably. this is literally the worst thing possible for a company like this to do.
crowdstrike was kinda on the come up too, they were starting to become a big name in the tech world as a new face. but that has definitely vanished now. to fuck up at this many places, is almost extremely impressive. its hard to even think of a comparable fuckup.
a friday evening simultaneous rollout boot loop is a phrase that haunts IT people in their darkest hours. it's the monster that drags people down into the swamp. it's the big bag in the horror movie. it's the end of the road. and for crowdstrike, that reaper of souls just knocked on their doorstep.

#coworker messaged me yesterday with 'hope you werent planning on sleeping saturday night' bc im on the after-hours rota for three shifts#and three sites have preemptively put in tickets for dst issues. i cant remember if spring ahead or fall back causes more problems#computers may be able to handle time changes but software that manages things based on time windows really doesnt#kind of embarrassing to be using a framework that cant handle dst! and theres not really anything we can do to fix it besides cleanup#this is familiar i think ive had to work a dst shift before. im being punished

You know what, fuck it, I don't *want* some frivolous, artisanal, lighter-than-air computer with no customizability, no upgradeability, no reparability, no ports, and a lifetime of *maybe* 3 years if you're lucky. I want a fucking great BEAST of a computer that's designed to last a minimum of 50 years, with ports up the wazoo and optional drives for every kind of media! I want modular components that you can drop in a bog for a year, dry them off, and have them still work fine! I want them to make a noise like "ker-chunk!" when you slide them into place! I want a switch that you pull to turn it on! And I don't want software that constantly forces you to get a pointless, cosmetic "upgrade" every few months either! I want durability! I want longevity! I want satisfying haptics! I want Silicon Valley to go fuck itself!
#computers#i get mine refurbished and they are all generally former office work horses#the youngest I have are from 2008/2009 (when new) and the most issues I have with them is that software is leaving 32bit processors behind#and software and operating systems are so resource heavy (ram and cpu usage) that a lot lags#(at least on one because someone thought only 1GB of ram is enough. spoilers: it's not enough and it wasn't when it was new)

How to Balance Fixing Performance Issues and Adding New Features in Web Applications?
In today’s digital landscape, web applications are essential for business operations, marketing, and consumer involvement. As organizations expand and consumer expectations rise, development teams are frequently confronted with the difficult task of balancing two key priorities: addressing performance issues and introducing new features.
While boosting performance improves the user experience and increases efficiency, new features are required to remain competitive and meet market demands. Prioritizing one over the other, on the other hand, might have negative consequences—performance concerns can lead to a poor user experience while failing to innovate can result in a competitive disadvantage.
This blog delves into how to balance improving performance and introducing new features to web apps, allowing firms to satisfy technical and market demands efficiently.
Why Balancing Performance and New Features Is Crucial
A web application‘s success depends on both its performance and its features. However, relying entirely on one might result in imbalances that impair both user happiness and business progress.
Performance:Performance is an important component that directly influences user retention and happiness. Users can become frustrated and leave if the application has slow loading times, crashes, or problems. Ensuring that your web application runs smoothly is essential since 53% of mobile consumers would quit a site that takes more than three seconds to load.
New Features:On the other hand, constantly adding new features keeps users interested and promotes your company as innovative. New features generate growth by attracting new consumers and retaining existing ones who want to experience the most recent changes.
The dilemma is deciding when to prioritize bug fixes over new feature development. A poor balance can harm both performance and innovation, resulting in a subpar user experience and stagnation.
Common Performance Issues in Web Applications
Before balancing performance and features, it’s important to understand the common performance issues that web applications face:
Slow Load Times: Slow pages lead to higher bounce rates and lost revenue.
Server Downtime: Frequent server outages impact accessibility and trust.
Poor Mobile Optimization: A significant portion of web traffic comes from mobile devices and apps that aren’t optimized for mobile fail to reach their potential.
Security Vulnerabilities: Data breaches and security flaws harm credibility and user trust.
Bugs and Glitches: Software bugs lead to poor user experiences, especially if they cause the app to crash or become unresponsive.
Strategic Approaches to Fixing Performance Issues
When performance issues develop, they must be handled immediately to guarantee that the online application functions properly. Here are techniques for improving performance without delaying new feature development:
Prioritize Critical Issues:Tackle performance issues that have the most significant impact first, such as slow loading times or security vulnerabilities. Use analytics to identify bottlenecks and determine which areas require urgent attention.
Use a Continuous Improvement Process:Continuously monitor and optimize the application’s performance. With tools like Google PageSpeed Insights, you can track performance metrics and make incremental improvements without major overhauls.
Optimize Database Queries:Slow database queries are one of the leading causes of web app performance issues. Optimize queries and ensure that the database is indexed properly for faster access and retrieval of data.
Reduce HTTP Requests:The more requests a page makes to the server, the slower it loads. Minimize requests by reducing file sizes, combining CSS and JavaScript files, and utilizing caching.
5. Leverage Caching and CDNs: Use caching strategies and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to deliver content quickly to users by storing files in multiple locations globally.
Why Adding New Features is Essential for Growth
In the rapidly changing digital environment, businesses must continually innovate to stay relevant. Adding new features is key to maintaining a competitive edge and enhancing user engagement. Here’s why:
User Expectations:Today’s consumers expect personalized experiences and constant innovation. Failure to add new features can lead to customer churn, as users may feel your web application no longer meets their needs.
Market Differentiation:Introducing new features allows your application to stand out in the marketplace. Unique functionalities can set your app apart from competitors, attracting new users and increasing customer loyalty.
Increased Revenue Opportunities:New features can lead to additional revenue streams. For example, adding premium features or new integrations can boost the app’s value and lead to increased sales or subscription rates.
4. Feedback-Driven Innovation: New features are often driven by user feedback. By continuously developing and adding features, you create a feedback loop that improves the overall user experience and fosters customer satisfaction.
