one thing i didn’t cover, or maybe covered incorrectly, is how you go from a crystal oscillator’s signal to a clock signal you might use in a very fast CPU. crystal oscillators can only reliably produce signals up to tens of MHz. the computer you’re using now probably has a CPU clocked at a few GHz
crystal oscillators have a key, characteristic trait: they are extremely accurate, which is to say they suffer very little drift. drift is a measure of how much a clock/oscillator’s actual frequency varies from its designed frequency. for example, if you have a 1MHz crystal, and you measure the number of cycles it emits over one second, you might find that it ticked 1,000,002 times. this would correspond to a drift rate of 2 cycles per every one million cycles.
and interesting side note -- the above clock drift example, mathematically represented, looks like this: (2 Hz / 1 MHz). if you ever did dimensional analysis in school, you might see that in the above figure, the hertz units would cancel out leaving a dimensionless (unitless) quantity. since these quantities usually are very very small, you will see clock drift frequently represented as parts per million/billion/trillion (ppm/ppb/ppt) the same way trace amounts of gas in our atmosphere might be represented. anyway
we can exploit the fact that crystal oscillators suffer so little drift to create a much faster clock signal. but first let’s talk about another kind of oscillator: an RLC oscillator
an RLC circuit is one that consists of an inductor, capacitor, and resistor. in our case, we obviously won’t have a dampening resistor but still view it as an RLC circuit nonetheless as the wires therein will have some (small) resistance. these circuits pass a charge between one pole of a capacitor, through an inductor, and back to the opposite pole of the capacitor. the circuit theory here would take way too long to explain, but, the gist of it is that a charge as bounced back and forth between a capacitor at the natural resonant frequency of the circuit which depends on the capacitance of the capacitor and inductance of the inductor. you can tune these circuits, by altering those two values, to get a target frequency. in fact, you can get extremely fast frequencies. like 25GHz (!) fast
the downside is that these circuits suffer tremendous drift. they do not hold a single freq. for very long, and drift so much that if you were to try to make a clock signal premised entirely on RLC circuits, your clock would cease drifting and start wandering. anything in your computer “wandering” is bad news
so we coincide our extremely accurate, slow crystal oscillators and our extremely fast, extremely inaccurate RLC oscillators to make a phase lock loop (PLL). PLLs take a reference signal, in our case a crystal oscillator (let’s say 10 MHz) and uses it to marshal a much faster clock signal from a voltage-controlled RLC oscillator
as the input clock signal, a sin wave, rises and falls very evenly, the voltage supplied to the RLC circuit is dynamically adjusted accordingly, such that the frequency from the RLC circuit is “locked in step” with the very accurate crystal clock signal input. for example:
if we want a 1 GHz output signal, and we have a 10 MHz input clock from our crystal, our RLC circuit will have to oscillate one hundred times every time our input signal oscillates once. we let both clock signals go at t=0, carefully keeping track of each signal’s phase and the cycle count of the RLC circuit. if the RLC circuit starts to oscillate too quickly or too slowly, we’ll be able to tell via corroborating how far into the crystal oscillator's cycle we are versus how many cycles the RLC circuit has emitted thus far. in fact, through some circuit fun also too complicated to dive into here, we can calculate the derivative of the RLC oscillator's frequency which is a bad way of saying that instead of just counting the number of cycles we can figure out to what degree the RLC circuits output frequency is changing, and then we can reduce/increase its input voltage accordingly to lock it to the reference clock. to summarize, we only allow a certain number of cycles from the RLC circuit per every cycle of the crystal oscillator, and because the crystal’s signal is so accurate, we get the best of both worlds: a very fast and very accurate signal suitable to be used in intricate, fast CMOS integrated circuits
