The New Gallery's Billboard 208

January 27th - June 30th, 2024

let’s meet at the confluence is a suggestion to all Calgarians to consider the site where the Elbow flows into the Bow river and question how settler-colonial history is privileged in public and site specific art. The piece references the different histories of gathering at the confluence of the waters, histories that long predate Calgary, Alberta. Despite histories of Indigenous uses of the land, queer cruising, sex work, trade, the arrival of the railway, and the North West Mounted Police, the site of the confluence is often overlooked and rarely used as the great meeting place that it once was. The simple map and text invites an audience of all backgrounds, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, to make their way from the The New Gallery along the Bow river to the confluence viewpoint and to consider their proximity to one another. The text is in English and the word confluence is repeated in multiple languages including Blackfoot, Cantonese, and Cree to honour the artist’s Michif roots and the specific location of the billboard on Treaty 7 and in Chinatown, pointing to the history of many different people living along the rivers.

Anyways, I ended up compiling most of the characters using the prompts, but to be honest I don't expect you to do all of them, just see which ones make you the happiest.

“Alright buddy, we are almost there.” Gabriel says with a laugh while Painter held his hands out with the large bag over his head. It was very silly considering Painter was a robot, but Gabriel had found this place while Anzu and him did their daily walk.

It was mostly so Sadao and Sebastian could have some alone time.

“I don’t know why you have me covered up! But I’m excited!”

“It’s so you don’t see the surprise.” Anzu says holding him gently so he didn’t topple over. Sebastian would kill them both if he even saw a scrape on Painter’s body.

Painter gives a loud gasp, his body jerking upwards as if he just realizes what was happening. “A surprise?!” He exclaimed.

Gabriel chuckles, “What do you think we were just yanking you around?”

“…maybe?” Painter says after a beat, “Humans do strange things!”

Anzu hums in agreement, “Well we are here.”

Gabriel looks more excited than he is giving a loud noise as if it was a sort of drumroll, and lifts the hood off him.

Before them was a large field. Bright yellow flowers point to the sun, their large stalks gently moving in the breeze. They were on a hill looking down at the meadow, this giant field of sunflowers.

Painter just stares, the colors bright against his screen. So vibrant, so new. He was so used to grey, white and black. But now it was greens, and blues and yellows and all sorts of colors.

The world was so colorful.

“Uh oh. Did we short circuit him?” Gabriel asks a little bit panicked but Anzu holds his arm preventing him from moving closer to the robot. She gestures for him to just let it sink in, let Painter have his moment.

“It’s beautiful. These…these are sunflowers right?”

“Mhmm. Aren’t they gorgeous? We found them and we thought you’d like them.” Gabriel says his hand on his hip. “You wanna check them out?”

“Can we?” Painter asks with wide eyes, and Gabriel grins from ear to ear.

“I don’t see why not. Race you down the hill!”

Anzu watches Gabriel take off, with Painter rushing right behind. She rolls her eyes but a smile is on her lips. “Children. I am with a bunch of children.” She mutters but starts to make her way down.

Gabriel is already rolling down the hill, with Painter following suit, laughter echoing with them. “Don’t get Painter all banged up! Sebastian will kill you!” Anzu shouts sliding down the steep hill with ease.

Gabriel lifts himself up, curls covered with grass and other things eyes scrunched with mirth only for Painter to push him back down so he could get ahead. “H-hey!” Gabriel laughs getting up as Painter goes to the sunflower fields.

These sunflowers reach up to his waist, swaying back and forth like the tide, a gentle breeze tickling the petals.

His metal hands gently caress the bright yellow flower.

“You know these flowers remind me of you.” Gabriel says leaning down to smell one of them.

“They do?” Painter asks curiously.

“Mhmm. Despite everything they always will face the sun. Always look on the bright side.”

Painter stares at the flowers laughing as he wades in the field of bright yellow and brown. “Do you think Sebastian will like one?”

“Sure we should find the biggest one.”

“Okay!” With that he rushes off, bouncing about, enjoying the sun and the sunflowers tickling at his metal hull. He goes to each flower as if measuring them so he can find the best and biggest flower for Sebastian.

“Good idea Gabe.”

“Thanks. I think the kiddo needs some good sunshine. Show all the colors.” Gabriel says leaning a bit as Anzu smiles softly through the mask.
