ARCHIVIST Cierran. Do you need something?

CIERRAN No.

ARCHIVIST Then why…

CIERRAN You need something.

My statement.

ARCHIVIST I thought you’d refused to give it. What changed your mind?

CIERRAN It’s been twenty years and I haven’t told a soul. I think it’s time.

ARCHIVIST Statement of Cierran Helix, regarding…? 

CIERRAN The death of his mother and father. 

ARCHIVIST. …Right.

Statement taken direct from subject, October 2, 2018.

Statement begins.

CIERRAN (STATEMENT) Dad always loved books. He always said that if he hadn’t gotten into painting, he’d probably have been an author. So when he saw there was a job open for a librarian at the Magnus Institute, he took it. Him and Mum needed the money. The healthcare system could only do so much for her before they had to start paying. It got worse when she was pregnant, I guess. So Dad started working here.

I suppose I should mention that I was something of a prodigy. I’d read nearly every book in the house by the time I was five— there were many books— and had already blasted through a couple years in school. So Dad decided to take me to work one day. He’d asked Elias, of course, and… for some reason it was okay with him. So I went and spent the day at the library. 

That’s when I met Elias, of course. He said he’d wanted to meet me, that he’d heard a lot about me. Dad didn’t seem to like him. He sent me off to read and went to work. But I could feel eyes on me now. People knew of my existence.

And the Fears would stop at nothing claim me, one way or another.

I was safe for a while. Dad refused to let me out of the house after that day. But then… then we had an uninvited visitor. 

I don’t know who it was— only that Dad sent me straight to my room when they came. They talked in the sitting room. I could hear their voices raising to shouts. They were arguing something fierce, I guess. And then… it went quiet.

I just figured they’d come to an agreement at the time. Until I heard the crackling and felt hot air spilling into my room through the cracks in the door. 

I should have died, to be honest. Legally, I did die— you’ll find no record of me alive in any official file. But I [COUGH] managed to open my window and clamber down a drainpipe. I’m surprised I didn’t [COUGH; SPUTTER] fall. 

ARCHIVIST Are you alright?

CIERRAN Y-yeah. Just need some water…

[A PAUSE]

Thanks. Alright, where was I…

CIERRAN (STATEMENT?) Well, I ran after that. Spent a few years living as a pickpocket on the [COUGH] streets until I remembered this place and came here. 

ARCHIVIST And… that’s it? Nothing else has happened since?

CIERRAN Nothing pertaining to my parents’ passing, no.

ARCHIVIST But—

CIERRAN You asked about their death. I told you about it. That is all that is required, no?

ARCHIVIST Not necessarily, if anything else has happened—

[A CHAIR SLIDING AGAINST THE FLOOR]

CIERRAN Statement ends.

ARCHIVIST Cierran—

[FOOTSTEPS; DOOR OPENS, THEN SLAMS SHUT]

ARCHIVIST Not again! Wait… what door did he leave through? That… wasn’t my office door.

He’s definitely hiding something. God, if he could just stop being so stubborn…

[TO RECORDER]

As for his statement… well, it seemed honest enough. But something just doesn’t fit. Why does he act like such a prick? Maybe that’s just his way of coping, but… he was practically homeless for years, but he sounds so damn flowery, I…

[PAUSE]

I think pre-isekai!Bridgerdick is quite underrated. Bridgerton would most likely have had some attraction to pre-isekai!Dickington if his behavior was similar to Daleton’s and she was attracted to that ‘indecency’ and Dickington would be struggling with his personal issues of identity and essentially assigning himself an indecent persona that could be really great for both humor and angst between the two
