I’m participating in @oakmoontarot’s August challenge, and it’s starting off with a bang. What card best represents your inner skeptic? 8 of Cups. I felt this soooo hard. I feel this as a core piece of my #enneagram8-ness. There’s some part of me that believes I have to go at it alone, that somehow what I’ve been given isn’t good enough and I need to make it something more. It’s the #8’s passion of Lust for sure. Granted I can also see very positive things from this card. I wouldn’t be who or where I am today if it weren’t for my ability to push forward and break new ground. Happy Tuesday, y’all! •• I’ve had a slurry of new followers the last week and I figured now would be a great time to re-introduce myself! •• I’m Abi. I’m queer. I’m nonbinary. I use the pronouns they/them/theirs. I’m a yoga therapist. I’m a parent. I’m a partner to @oakmoontarot. And the reason you’re here: I’m an Enneagram teacher. •• I have been studying the enneagram for 6 years and have been actively teaching it for two. I completed my certification with The Narrative Enneagram (@enneaworld) this summer. I’ve created this account to be a space for us to all explore the deeper issues of the Enneagram. I hope that this can be a safe space to dive deeper than the memes and stereotypes into something real and life changing. As a yoga therapist, I give a perspective on the Enneagram that is practical, body-based, and down to earth, because how can this tool change us if we don’t actually know *how* to use it?! •• I believe that everyone should have access to quality teaching around this incredible tool. I also believe that the more diverse voices we bring into the conversation, the more we can all learn about the Enneagram and, in turn, ourselves. That’s why I started #queerenneagram, to help give those of us under the LGBTQIA umbrella a space to share our experiences. I also love and admire the work of people of color in the Enneagram community like @enneagramincolor, @electric_lady_msj, @doitforthegrampodcast, and @gabestorres. •• I love running this account, but my real work is my private yoga therapy and enneagram coaching practice. I work with clients to develop practices that give them the space to change their lives, and it is my soul’s work. I get this this question a lot, so I figured this would be the best place to start. The Enneagram of Personality (what most people just call the Enneagram) is a psycho-spiritual personal development tool. I like to think of it as a map of your inner landscape, or even something like the owners manual for your personality. Each one of us leads with one specific type (yes, even you). In psychological terms this type is a set of effective coping mechanisms turned reactive, patterned behavior. Spiritually, our types show us both the path to our truest selves and the nine different ways we block against being receptive to what the Universe (God, Allah, Supreme Being, etc) has for us. As we study the Enneagram we learn what we look like in reactivity. By becoming aware of our patterned behavior we have the chance to see when it’s effective and when it’s not. With the help of contemplative practices we can begin to create more space between outside stimulus and our patterned responses, therefore giving us the ability to choose our behavior instead of reacting out of habit. This is where lives are transformed. And that pretty much sums up what I’m trying to do with my life and what I want to help others do as well. We talk about a beautiful painting, not the paint brushes. We talk about life-giving music, not cables, wires, and recording equipment. We talk about an exquisite sculpture, not the hammer and chisel. •• So why do we talk more about the Enneagram than we do about our life’s work? •• It feels a little scary to be saying this given I’ve spent the last several years of my life building a platform *talking about the enneagram.* But if there is anything I’ve come to realize about the majority of the current discourse on the Enneagram right now, it’s that it’s getting in the way of the real work. •• Do we need to have a solid understanding of the system, of course. But we don’t learn it for the system’s sake, we learn it in order to do the work. Just like a musician does learn an instrument for the instrument’s sake, they’re driven to learn, study, practice in order to make music. Does the instrument or tool matter? Of course! But it only matters I service to the work it was designed to do—otherwise it’s just an object. •��� So my question to you is, are you focused on the tool or what the tool is allowing you to create? My POV right now. •• We had big plans of going on our first big bikepacking trip this weekend, but the weather had other plans. So, instead, I got my second shot yesterday, and damn, I’m feeling all sorts of wigged out. •• Mostly, I feel fine, just some intense fatigue, which is a real struggle for me. The compulsive drive I have to “do” something is off the charts currently, but my body is simply not into it. Even walking to get the mail felt like a lot. •• The Work never stops. It shows up every day in the most mundane aspects of your life. For me today, it’s just keeping my ass on this couch so my body can rest and give my immune system the extra help it needs. Glad I have these pups to keep me company. •• How is your work showing up for you today? When a friend asked how I, as an 8, was dealing with all the feelings of having a book coming out, my only answer was, “I’m working out a lot.” •• I wish I was joking, but I definitely wasn’t. 😂 •• Yesterday, I crossed the finish line of a bike race for the very first time. I’ve done a couple other races in the last year, but wasn’t able to finish because of physical pain or bike issues. Yesterday’s ride was extremely tough, but I made it through! •• Bike riding, especially off road or gravel riding, is a spiritual experience for me, and yesterday was no different. It’s healing to be out in nature, in the quite, feeling the wind blow, breathing the fresh air. •• Of course that wind made the riding pretty brutal, and I was definitely breathing pretty heavy most of the time, but I still found myself stunned at the beauty of nature and even a little impressed at what my body was capable of. •• I’m definitely feeling all 62 gravel miles today. But I’m also feeling the spaciousness within myself that comes with having time away from normal life to process my feelings and burn off pent up physical energy. •• How do you process your feelings when you’re going through Big Things™️?
