(Caption and images reposted from the artist ) "It is a sad day - #NichelleNichols- best known as #LtUhura from #StarTrek has passed.

She was 89 - I had the honor of painting her - attached are 2 of the 3 paintings - she came to my studio in portland and in Vancouver and she entertained me at her home in Woodland Hills. She was funny. Irreverent and entirely delightful. She often sang to me and could remember the words to so many songs even when she wasn’t sure what town she was in.

Still So beautiful in her 80’s.

She told me several stories including the now famous account of her wanting to leave Star Trek after the first season because of the rampant racism at the studio. She wanted to sing on Broadway and decided to leave the show. She told Gene Roddenberry that she would be leaving and why. He told her they loved having her as part of the cast and would she please take the weekend to think about it. She said fine. He gave her a couple tickets to the NAACP gala that weekend. She went to the gala and was told there was a big fan that wanted to meet her. It was Martin Luther King. He told her he was a huge fan of the show and that it was the only show that Coretta and he allowed their little girls to stay up and watch. She said I’m glad you like the show but I’m leaving. He said oh no, you can’t leave the show not because of the people who love you but because of the people who hate us.

She also was recruited by #NASA to bring diversity into the ranks of the astronauts.

We were lucky to have her example, talent and heart. The first painting is called “live long and prosper” she is giving us a subtle Spock salute. The second is “joy and inspiration” this is the private Nichelle - who she was one on one."

There is something really compelling when a painting works, when the brush marks fall into place, when every touch is the right one. Conversely when the painting is not right when marks have not found their correct position when the momentum and excitement had led you astray, it get under your skin, niggles at you like an itch you can't scratch. One hour may not seem like very much time But if one is very focused, prepares the space, lays out some fresh colour then it might be all you need to set the thing right, to realign, redraw and rethink. As I ponder the use of time I am also brought to the strark conclusion (as I continue with my assessments) that some of my students have been really good at using their time, have carried out the balancing act of work, making, printing, research, writing and some have no idea how to use time at all and one wonders what they have been doing with their time.
