i think sometimes folks forget that manipulative people are just as good at weaponizing the truth as they are at weaponizing lies or misinformation. they don’t have to tell a lie. they can speak the honest truth and simply misrepresent the context.
it’s a lot harder for the average person to explain why a truth isn’t being accurately represented or how it’s using fallacious reasoning than it is to disprove a false statement entirely. you need to either be ready to provide the context on your own or be really good at identifying when someone is engaging in contextomy or sophistry. that’s a lot harder than it sounds (which is why you should avoid arguing with these types of people tbh)

Fun Stuff is Happening
So, a few friends and I have decided it would be fun to have a blog where we upload some of our conversations out of context. We're always joking about how weird and funny things are when there's no context so I made @contextomy-cats where I upload screenshots of out of context stuff from Discord and any other messaging app we may use. My friends also submit things they think are upload worthy.

NYT brazenly engaging in contextomy is problematic. Seasoned Indian journalists defending this practice is even more troubling. https://t.co/T0Wbgoydci

Have you ever heard the term "contextomy"? It's an old internet term for removing words from context to change the meaning. It also gets called things like "misrepresentation" or "fabrication" in many post-secondary academic misconduct guidelines.
In this case, both the NHS and APA screenshots you present come from pages which contain further context that would clarify or change the meaning (wiktionary and thefreedictionary are NOT authoritative sources). I explicitly spell out the context surrounding your APA quote in the FAQ linked in my blog description (see #2, also #11), and while I touch on why dysphoria is defined the way it is in #3 & #4, it's the post linked in #12 that really lays out the APA's definition of mental disorders and the source of the profound distress requirement. Don't forget to read through my sources while you're at it.
(Keep in mind that if you try to argue with me without taking the time to do the research I just presented to you, I will be able to tell, and I definitely won't keep being as nice about it as I am right now.)
Reminder that dysphoria is a medical term that refers to a sense of profound distress or discomfort, not just a catch-all term for any sense of disconnect.
Further reminder that the medical definition is the only relevant definition when talking about whether access to medical transition should be tied to dysphoria.

Quote
The phrase "blood is thicker than water" has always bugged me because it leaves out the truth of the phrase, which actually says "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb". Alternatively, "a jack of all trades is a master of none" which leaves out "but oftentimes better than a master of one".What are some other examples like this, and is there an official term for this? I've seen the term contextomy used, but I don't know whether or not that's correct.
