Things to do in Rarotonga, Cook Islands
The Cook Islands Rarotonga is a hugely popular destination for travellers. If you’re wondering what you can do in Rarotonga, we have a list of some of our top Raro activities. From hiking tours to morning markets, there’s something for everyone!
Our team at Spacifica Travel love to plan Rarotongan holidays as no two itineraries are the same. To help you take charge of your trip to Rarotonga, we have outlined some of our top things to do while you visit the breathtaking South Pacific.
Visit the reef
Rarotonga is home to several of the Cook Islands best reef spots, and are a top must-see for any traveller. There are a couple of ways to do this, although snorkelling is definitely the most fun and interactive.
Snorkelling is most accessible at Muri Lagoon. A lagoon cruise will get you out onto the water where you can jump in and swim amongst the coral and the fish. This is a great activity for the whole family and is safe and easy. And due to the protection of the lagoon, you can count on clear and gentle waters.
Another great way to view the reef is on the Reef Sub — which is a cruise with a glass-bottom where you can see the reef moving under you. Catch sight of schools of fish and colourful reefs below your feet as you ride across the clear blue waters.
However you choose to experience Rarotonga’s colourful reef, this experience is a must see for any traveller.
Watch a Hermit Crab Race
While it may not sound like it on paper, there is something undeniably thrilling about watching a Hermit Crab race on the sands of a Rarotonga beach. The “sport” is actually incredibly popular across the Cook Islands, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find a race that you can enter into.
The rules are incredibly simple. All you need to do is select a hermit crab from a bucket, place it in the centre of a sand circle alongside other crabs, and wait to see which one can make it out of the circle first. It’s an endearing pastime that allows you to socialise with locals and allow your competitive side to shine.

10 Unmissable Things to Do on Your Cook Islands holiday
There are a number of ‘must dos’ when you visit the Cook Islands, and it’s often hard to figure out what you should try to fit into your holiday. Magic surrounds the Cook Islands and once you arrive, you will be overwhelmed with the variety of activities on offer. Smothered in natural beauty with a rich cultural heritage, you won’t want to miss a thing!
To help you get started on planning your next trip to the Cook Islands the team at Spacifica Travel have rounded up ten of our top unmissable activities to do while enjoying the Cook Islands.
Captain Tama’s Lagoon Cruise
Muri Lagoon is world famous, and for a good reason! During your cruise over the aqua lagoon, you will be entertained by the local crew and discover this magical playground in the best of company. For those who wish to keep their feet dry, there is a glass bottom boat where you can watch the ocean while listening to stories from the locals. Water lovers will be met with an abundance of marine life as soon as you launch yourself off the boat, and it’s easy to spend hours snorkelling and discovering this natural aquarium home to giant clams, turtles, colourful fish, and corals. This trip is a must do and we know you will thank us for the recommendation!
Highland Paradise
For the full Highland Paradise experience we suggest doing both the day and night tours. Visitors can immerse themselves in the story of the Cook Island’s Maori history or be intrigued on a tour of the village. At night, you will enjoy a traditional Umu feast and cultural adventure hosted by the descendants of the Tinomana dynasty. Be ready for goosebumps!
