As he is misunderstood time and again to ridiculous effect, kids and parents alike will be giggling non-stop. And Matthew Cordell's brilliantly silly, evocative illustrations just add to the uproarious fun. TACO TUESDAY! 🌮🌮🌮 So, I'm sure lots of you already know and love Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri's awesome "Dragons Love Tacos" (2012). BUT ... my honourary nephew and I both read it this past week, and felt equally adamant that EVERYONE needs this book. Plus we really love tacos, too. So it seemed important to share it in case any of you were missing out. "Dragons Love Tacos" is a hilarious letter to kids about everything you could possibly want to know regarding the dragon obsession with tacos (including their odd aversion to spicy salsa). Ever have a moment when something just CLICKED and you really understood the appeal of it for the first time? I was never a huge fan of cumulative stories like The House That Jack Built until I had one of those "NOW I GET IT" moments, upon reading Barbara S. Garriel's "I Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello" (2004). Based on the song about the old lady who swallowed a fly, this book takes everything to a droll extreme, with the shy fellow in question gulping down instrument after musical instrument in a weird, wonderful, sing-song story that's a great introduction to the orchestra for young kids. John O'Brien's illustrations are as warped and whimsical as the tale itself, and so much fun. There are lots of kinds of silly. One of my favourites, when it comes to kid's books, is the straight-faced kind that winks while pretending seriousness, and makes kids feel in on the joke. And I absolutely LOVE "The Skunk" (2015) by the brilliant combo of Mac Barnett and Patrick McDonnell because it does exactly that. 📚📙📗 From the very first page, we get dragged into the mysterious, ridiculous game of a man being...tailed? By a skunk. Into an opera house. And it just gets sillier from there! I'll be honest: initially I just loved "I Am A Cat" (2018) because, well, it's great silly fun and who doesn't love cats? And it doesn't hurt that Galia Bernstein's artwork is gorgeous, evoking both the majesty of the big cats and the fluffy adorableness of the little one. 📚📙📗 But dig deeper and you won't be disappointed. This is a funny, entertaining read-aloud sure to appeal to little kids, but it's also informative, and a lovely parable about belonging and not making assumptions about others.
