what's your favorite way to draw

Digital is what I do most + is most convenient BUT I'm a traditional pencil or charcoal gal at my core!! It's what I started with and am most comfortable with. Ideas seem to come to me easier on paper for some reason & the tactile-ness of smudging drawing etc feels way more at home to me than digital

My background is solidly in realism & it wasn't until about 7 years ago that I started dabbling into stylization / fun stuff so my "default" style vs what I typically post here is..... Uh off balance atm LMAO

I love Prismacolors too when I wanna do something colored but those are kinda pricey & run out quickly. So I have to plan carefully what exactly I'm gonna use them for before I do it

Happy Birthday, Ayumu! 🥳🥳

While I was in in Tokyo earlier this year, I passed by a crafts store and found lots of pretty paper flowers. I thought they'd make really pretty shikishis... 😊

I've been drawing Nijigasaki for 4 years and this would be the 3rd Ayumu birthday I've drawn for... Wow! 😅😅

Ayumu's my favourite by far - so much that it's kind of hard to word why but I'd hope that adoration comes across in my art. There was originally a comic I was making for her, but I couldn't finish it in time. I hope I can make one in time next year!

I was looking through my copy of unicorn dysphoria again today and I didn’t really think about it when I first read it because I was just gushing about species dys/euphoria feelings but are all the pieces in that zine made with traditional media and then like… scanned? I know sometimes programs can mimic the look of paint/ink/other physical media but it didn’t seem like that to me? As someone who loves physical mediums that observation immediately got me PUMPED to make my own project

short answer: yes

long answer:

unicorn dysphoria was made in a fervor while trying to meet a deadline (my partner was tabling at a local zine fest, she said if i made a zine it could be on her table), my computer was shitting itself, and i was in the middle of moving 1000 miles away.

so i did all of the work traditionally in my sketchbook(s), took the best photos i could, and then did a crazy amount of color/lighting correction to make it look like i scanned it. as for specific materials/media, it's a mixed bag: copics, colored pencil, sharpies, graphite, assorted other pens/markers, basically anything i had easy access to.

i would def recommend getting your paws on a scanner to make your life easier, but otherwise i would totally say you should do this. the looseness of traditional media gives sequential work like zines and comics a really unique feel and its also really fun to have the original artwork to look through. usually when i do a big creative project there's no evidence of it by the end, but doing it on paper makes me going insane over a cartoon horse very tangible, like when you walk into a room and see some kind of destruction and you just know Something Happened Here

I've really gotten the hang of alcohol markers! I am eternally grateful to the very kind individuals who bought me a couple starter packs of Copics for my birthday at the start of the year. Now I'm experimenting with adding in colored pencil for details and shading.

Husband got me a cute coloring book that I've been practicing in so I can focus on color techniques instead of getting hung up on the linework. I had a lot of fun on this moth before I took a break to do some other stuff.

materials/wips and tag list under cut!!

materials used - tan masking tape for skintones, colored pens, mix of alcohol based markers (copics to be exact) and highlighters), and then exactoblade to cut out shapes and glue them over in layers

for the first photos of my wip i started by masking over skin parts with tape (cutting it where not needed with exactoblade, could use scissors but they'd need to be sharp, i tried lol) and then just colored in a few parts. also decided that instead of a flat drawing i would have it pop out here! very fun.

second one is me outlining the body and planing the hair. i had made eyebrows at this point but this photo was used to figure out where my cut paper would lay down so it is now shown.

3rd has a crop to it due to me not thinking bald kaito needed to be in the world yet (lol). i had made an overlay for his id and pasted the hands over it and also added some shading

4th is where i remembered that suit jacket. i glued the hair and added highlights and eyebrows. i remember looking at the album cover trying to take inspo from the stylistic choices made with him in it! its a very fun song and i loveee kaito (kiyoteru has my heart tho)

My best picture of Tachibana yet!

Exactly 4 years since I first played Yakuza 0, I’m suddenly thinking about how much I adore Tetsu Tachibana! I’ve been reminiscing about him a lot this past week. I’m on a quest to watch other media starring Arata Iura. So far I watched Air Doll (really sad) and am currently watching Ano Toki Kiss Shite Okeba (absolutely adorable! I’ll make a post about this later). It’s fun to pretend it’s Tachibana in these different situations. Anyway, at the moment, I’m thinking about how much I love my memory of Tachibana’s personality. He’s calm and calculating yet gentle. He reminds me of Hakkai and Hazel from Saiyuki, the kind of character who will smile sweetly while saying something passive aggressive and drinking daintily from a tea cup. <3

My fujoshi brain finds it charming how he feels like such an uke, while also being the master who has the power to walk all over his subordinates, such as how he tells Kiryu that he believes it’s important to use people for whatever means necessary to achieve his goals. Yet he still feels sweet somehow… too gentle for this criminal underworld. I like to think of him as gay. Part of this may be due to the association with other characters, while part of it is just me liking the idea of someone in his position having male bodyguards willing to pleasure him at a moment’s notice. It also helps that his actor plays in multiple BL dramas.

I’m leaving space on the page for whichever man I choose to be at his beck and call (Kiryu or Oda). I didn’t center him enough on the page to have both of them with him. That can be another picture.

I’m not sure if anyone noticed, but he’s supposed to be crossdressing here. I didn’t think to continue the picture lower to show that he’s wearing a dress. I only put proper care into making sure the picture was drawn small enough to show his missing arm. I’m not entirely sure of the situation here, but I’m imagining that he’s with his lover, showing a secret side of him that likes wearing women’s clothing, and also bravely showing his arm. He looks a little wary, and honestly, I don’t think it’s from his current situation. I feel like he’s such a workaholic that he’s probably thinking about his troubles with the yakuza. His partner is going to have to help him relax here.

I draw him with such a big round chest because there was a certain scene in the game that showed his naked chest from a VERY flattering angle, and I have to make homage to it every time I draw him!

Hlaalu Helseth is such an underrated character in this franchise I can’t help but notice. There’s also something repulsively sexy about him too. Like I can’t be the only person that thinks he’s hot??? It must be the goatee and the lips lmao.

The way he’s so underhanded yet shameless at the same time. He kind of leans in to the whole poisoning his enemies thing but not too much if it benefits him. It’s honestly so fun.

I’d love to see more art and fanfiction about him, but I may as well be the change I’d like to see. I’d love to make some more art of him with my new copic markers, I just need some more practice as I’m very unwieldy with this new medium.

So here's my first ever work I've made with copic markers and liner! It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to doing more like this!

This is Tobirama in gamer-mode after he has built his very own 90's-00's gaming computer. He is a part of the e-sports team "Konoha Greatest", and regularly participates in online tournaments against other ninja villages playing Age of Empires II, and his nickname is "The Great Wave". If the opponent leaves Tobirama alone too long, he builds up a huge army and then floods his opponents like a great wave ("oh no! here comes the GREAT WAVE!!")

I have a whole list of Naruto characters I wanna draw as e-sports profiles in the game Age of Empires II scene now lmao, one of them is Gaara, who has a playstyle where he has an impeccable defense (zettai bogyo!!) and is amazing at scouting the map and what his opponent is doing (his floating eye).

More traditional experimental stuff! I got a new sketchbook as I finished the last one (maybe I should do a video tour of it?). The new one isnt quite the texture I like for just sketching, but it is very nice for ink and markers and I happened to purchase a few more water based markers the other day from my fave art store. I know its probably seems obvious but I found that copics are not the best for this paper but the water soluble markers from faber castelle and tombow are very nice to work with. I may get more in the future.

I think would I would like to try next is some oil pastel pencils? Im curious about them though I should also just use up my colored pencils. Either way Im having fun! Its nice to just...make a thing and say 'thats good enough' and move on while thinking of new ways to keep pushing it. I broke in that big sketchbook too so no more 'oh no its too nice to make art in' for me!

“The Inquisitor And Her Commander”

As some of you may have noticed, I am a huge fan of the Dragon Age games, especially Dragon Age Inquisition. Last year, I had planned on drawing all the main [playable] characters up until Dragon Age Day (which took place on December 4th), but I just didn’t have time to draw more than three characters (the Inquisitor, Solas, & Varric…please check them out in my gallery) due to being busy with work and other things. I’ll eventually draw the other characters when I gather more motivation to do so.

For now, please enjoy this piece. I hope everybody likes this. I worked very hard on this artwork. It took longer than usual to create, due to all the small details, the poses, & the armour. (Armour is not easy to draw for me!) For those of you who are DAI fans, you may recognize the flowers: Crystal Grace on the bottom and Andraste’s Grace on the top. I know Andraste’s Grace is not in DAI, but I thought it would be pretty to add to the artwork (since it technically exists in the Thedas world).

 My OC Inquisitor is named Bryony Trevelyan. She is actually my 2nd Inquisitor character, the first one having been an elf (which I may draw someday). I had been playing DAI for the 3rd time, a few months ago, as a male character (since I wanted him to be in a romance with Dorian, so yes, my male Inquisitor is gay), but I stopped for a bit since I am playing Skyrim at the moment (with updates & mods). Anyway, back on the main subject: I drew Inquisitor Bryony Trevelyan in the Armor of the Dragon Hunter outfit (from the Jaws of Hakkon DLC), which I had altered the colours by tinting it with Veil Quartz. I based her crown from concept art for DAI. So much armour in the game! Which I love, especially since the DA games don’t give female characters the stereotypical skimpy outfits…I love that I get to make my female characters wear bad-ass armour.

Cullen Rutherford is such an adorable and slightly awkward character around my Inquisitor. I knew I had to romance him right away, because his looks are the type of man I am attracted to in real life. (I’m not going to lie…in the game, he’s hot for a video game character. Ha ha!) I’ve always enjoyed the flirting in the DA games when it comes to the relationships. The best scene was right before their first kiss, when Cullen got interrupted by a member of the Inquisition, and then got mad about it. Ha ha. I liked when my Inquisitor asked Cullen, “The day you kissed me on the battlements…how long had you wanted to do that?” And Cullen replied (with a laugh), “Longer that I should admit.” Awwwww.

I also liked the part in the Winter Palace, when all these people were flirting with Cullen, and one asked him, “Are you married, Commander?” And Cullen replied, “Not yet, but I am…already taken.” Double awwww, because a loyal man is so dreamy. :3 I actually had Bryony & Cullen get married in the last DLC. :3 They adopt a Mabari (dog), too!

I love DAI too much. :D It’s such a fun game with the most gorgeous graphics (especially on the Xbox Series X).

Drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens, then coloured in with a mixture of Copic Markers & Ohuhu Markers. I used Koi Watercolours for the background. White accents done with both a gel pen and white watercolour. Gold acrylic was used for the Inquisition Symbol & the lines, which the scanner absolutely murders...the gold is such a pretty, shimmery metallic in real life. The light green around my art was done in Photoshop Elements.
